She was south of Seattle, and the bridge is north, but then again, she just moved. (But she said she was moving closer to Seattle, so I think she's ok.) But yeah, I can't imagine the traffic. I had the fun of dealing with the I-81 shutdown a couple weekends ago, and that was bad enough.
We may have some other Seattleites or Washingtonians though, so to all of you, let us know you are safe.

Isn't ChronosDragon from Seattle? (... checks the Historical Records ...) Well, from WA, a few minutes (by private jet) from Tacoma.
He (I think?) posted after the bridge collapsed, though, so he should be fine. Edit: hopefully nearest and dearest too.

Here's Cuegan feasting on stolen grapes.
Quite a few grapes have gone between the first and last frame...
Image

Edit: are those Molpies-1 appearing on the ground between them, and next to Megan, in one of the last frames?
I'd say no. Probably just trash; half-eaten grapes from Cueball and Megan.

Edit2: I haven't seen anybody mention this, so I guess I'll have to. OMR!!1! We were talking about how Cuegan never eats, and only a few short hectonewpix later, they're eating! This is definite proof that Randall reads the OTT. Image

-1: only two of them, so not quite a ... TBD

Weird... I dreamt the same thing. Dunno what the ending was but I dreamed it ended in another fade and then started scrolling credits like a movie was over.

(Greetings from the biggest coma yet to date!)
This is insane. The heretical outside world has swallowed my away for what, almost 2 weeks 336 newpix now. So now we have dune hopping, dinosaurs (time raptors, molpy1 herons, or whatever they are), plants, berries, insects, , the vestiges of human habitation, amphibians, giant frikkin trees, and now, a vineyard?!?!? At least some things, like Megan's clumsiness and the great wisdom of Cueball's words, never change.

Just freaking wow. Obviously, I'm going to be drowning in the great and everpresent Sea2 of ketchup. Good to see you all still alive and kicking!

There has been a decent amount of discussion over the GLR reading the OTT and its possible effect on the OTC, most recently BlitzGirl's successful dialog-dance.

I wonder, if we knew for a fact that we could change the OTC in dramatic ways (not just calling in dialog or a Molpy, but important changes) would you want that power? Do you think we could use this great power responsibly?

kenmelken wrote:It's been a while since we've worked on the Jabberwocky poem (as Lewis Carrol is one of my favorites, I'm quite interested in this topic).

Sorry I've been absent from this discussion that I started! I got caught up with Real Life issues starting in the middle of the afternoon yesterday, and by the time I was able to come back to the OTT, I was already behind by 7 NewPages. It took me till now just to ketchup. Total elapsed time has been less than 24 hours since I kicked off Jabber-walky, but it seems like a lot longer than that!

kenmelken, your summary above is awesome and comprehensive. Here's what I propose in order for us to move forward (and to use as many different people's contributions as possible):
  • We'll use my verse 1
  • We'll use StratPlayer's verse 2 - the rewrite that follows the original Jabberwocky more closely
  • We'll use kenmelken's verse 3
  • We'll also include the twerk that yappobiscuits offered to kenmelken's verse 3

That makes our current version of Jabber-walky the following:
Spoiler:
    Jabber-walky

    'Twas midday, and the molpymurs
Did dig and tunnel in the ground
    All flighty were the raptorbirds,
    And the beesnakes did abound.

    Fear the molpyraptror, Megan!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the the ninjashark! And shun
the beesnakes that seek your snatch!

They took their dilgun'rang in hand:
Long time the sea answers they sought—
So rested they by the neat "Neat tree,"
    And lay awhile in thought.

If we're all in agreement, then we're ready for candidates for the 4th verse.
kenmelken wrote:For reference, the original 4th stanza of Jabberwocky is as follows:

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

SO... I frankly don't care which second stanza we use, but someone should make a decision AND, someone should continue with the 4th stanza.

And I'm ok with whichever one is chosen also -- perhaps Ebonite can choose which best suits the vision originally intended when the first stanza was posted. If the decision is made to not use mine, I'll grab another one once others have had a chance to play, too.

EDIT: And Ebonite resolves the issue even as I'm posting. Cool!

A small ode to the molps and the brave molpfinders out there...

Molps are in the air
In the whisper of the trees
Molps are in the air
Making love like Molpy bees

And I don't know if I'm being foolish
As I never have them found
But with help from mscha I can see them
And it's there when I look in OTC
The past is full of traps, charms and mirages, but if you just keep up with with what you are doing it will all be fine.

Very riverish ketchup and I'm back to the Present. Time for coma... You guys know the routine by now.

You don't need to list through what sites or by what people you are linked to. You could have the controlling log in something like Google so you can grab a "real" ID so you don't get to many people spoofing profiles of someone else to make them look bad... then again how would you make them look bad if the registered name & site are not public.
I would not be comfortable with this [using data from outside xkcd]. There are many ways to slice the data, and it has already been shown (elsewhere) that anonymized data can be easily de-anonymized. I even did it myself, by hand, on one (admittedly smaller) project, getting down to exactly who replied what to which question. It's not a question of making somebody "look bad". It's a question of the fact that your social network by itself says too much about you to make available to commercial entities, who are eager to tailor your experience to their desires. The information needed to create this graph would also lend itself to creating other products, and that is a place I do not want to go.

Umwelt by nature is one thing, but umwelt controlled by facebook or the RIAA is a whole different can of tuna, and that is where the network of connected computers (which includes but is not limited to the internet) is headed.

This is a sanctuary here.

Since this has gone more than a couple of posts I'll drop my 2c in...

I'm 100% with ucim. My online identities are all carefully separated as much as possible. And while I might be ok with providing some anonymous data for such an XKCDproject, I have severe doubts that #1 the data will remain anonymous (it actually takes surprisingly little to put together a unique "fingerprint" for someone, matching an online identity to a real person) and #2 that the data will remain safely within XKCD. Especially with the recent arrest and terrorism charge of a teen who made the mistake of posting somewhat incendiary rap lyrics to FB, I'm not at all interested in having Big Brother get even a glance at who I am or where I go online if I can possibly avoid it.

edfel wrote:There are two issues IMO, which are quite independent: one is writing the program to draw the graph given only user ids, without any more link over different sites than the occasional pairs of identical ids which by chance correspond to the same person. This is not too hard to do, in the sense that if it is of any use for commercial purposes, then it has probably already been done. The other issue is to ask people to give several of their ids from different sites to the one drawing the graph. This is asking for quite a lot of trust from the users, and I think very few people would give all their ids in one bunch (although somehow related ones such as {xkcd, reddit, slashdot} would probably always appear together).
If we stick to the first program and run it in the few forums where it can give relevant output, then it can be interesting. But the second aspect, gathering ids, is not something I look forward to.

Agreed. I would be cool with the first program. I would not be cool with the second.

Been lurking the fora for a long time, seeing the creation of an awe inpsiring thread.

Sometimes it seems like it is impossible, but I have been trying to keep up with the flood of posts.

Did I try too hard and fail? I was really hoping the D&J at Tanagra would catch on earlier, almost done watching all of TNG on Netflix. Oh well, something to work on.

Looking forward to Time travelling with everbody.

*throws forward firstpost* Glad to see another lurker de-lurk. Looking forward to time-traveling with you, too.

Keeping up is close enough to impossible that nobody will mind if you skip a little, but more power to you if, like some of us, you're crazy dedicated enough to read it all.

As a ‘reward’, here's an animation of the current Molpyfly. (Presumably complete, we'll probably move to a new scene next newpix.)

I wonder if this means there'll be another major change of scene. Or perhaps we'll be watching Molpyfly acrobatics for a hectonewpix or so.
Or, of course, OMR, TIME IS ENDING!!1!

Edit: in any case, this means I can add a frame to the animation after all.

Seems like an odd place to end Time. I think we've got quite a ways to go yet.

My prediction15: we'll get a glimpse of a molpy slowly following Cuegan. Then the camera will pan to show the pair again.

15: wrong

Another song brought on by molp-speration

The Molpy Connection
Spoiler:
Why are there so many songs about molpies
And what type of creature they are
Molpies are visions
and only illusions
Mistakes of the True GLR

So we've been told
and some choose to believe it
But I know they're wrong, wait and see
Someday we'll find it
the molpy connection
the Ryhmers, the blitzers, and me.

Who said that every question
would be heard and answered
when asked in the one true thread
Somebody thought of it, and someone believed it
now look how many pages you've read

What's so amazing that keeps us thread gazing
and what do we think that we might see
Someday we'll find it
the molpy connection
the Ryhmers, the blitzers, and me.

All of us watching Time, we know that it's probably magic

Have you been comaing?
and have you seen the Cuegan?
I've heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound, that calls the young blitzers
the voice may be one and the same

I've seen it too many times to ignore it
there's something that I'm supposed to post
Someday we'll find it
the molpy connection
the Ryhmers, the blitzers, and me.

Not entirely happy with the meter, but it works well enough, I guess.

I miss Jim Henson.

A bit late, but it's never to late to call out heresy.
