The Last Time Waiter, Chapter 5: Not Exactly What I Had in Mind

“Not the power to remember, but its very opposite, the power to forget, is a necessary condition for our existence.” — Sholem Asch
Spoiler:
The Engineer wrote:I still don't get it. Why would it need a weapon that powerful?

The Archduchess wrote:Think of it as a self-defense mechanism.

The Engineer wrote:But it…

The Archduchess looked at him as if saying “I know better.”.

The Engineer wrote:Fine. Better be safe than sorry, anyway.

Three years had passed since the beginning of Mar Mojot, and the progress on the fields being researched was impressive. Dozens of new technologies had been created; things that were previously thought to be impossible turned out to be easy to do (for the Lights' standards). The Mar Mojot project had unofficially spread over other Research Bureaus. The First Bureau was projecting the ‘brain’ of the machine; the Fifth and Eighth Bureaus were cooperating on the design of the body materials, and the Eighth was further working with the Fourth on energy gathering systems and with the Second on turning the machine's body into something called ‘computer’.

The Engineer wrote:I'll go check with the Eighties if we'll be able to arbitrarily transform the body. This will make this kind of stuff much easier.

As they approached the entrance to the Station, Tèrag appeared coming from it. She ran on their direction, giving Münr a long and passionate kiss before saying in a suggestive voice: “I loved last night.”. She then followed her path as if nothing had happened.

The Archduchess wrote:Tehee, what happened last night?

The Engineer wrote:I don't know. I never remember, since I was young.

The Engineer slowed down his pace.

The Engineer wrote:When I wake up with the sun, I can't remember anything that happened since the sun went down on the previous day. The memories are gone; they disappear as I start to wake up. The folks on the Second Bureau tested me on every way they could think of, to no avail.

The Archduchess wrote:Wow, that's… I can't imagine how you feel.

The Engineer wrote:It started with a dream. It's the only one I can recall, but even then just barely. I remember it involved a beach, a child, and a dragon… that's all I know.

* * *

The Archduchess wrote:What are you doing here?

The Arch-Cardinal loved to see the Archduchess upset, especially when she was the cause.

Her spies had told her about her comrade's plans to include an experimental hyper-velocity plasma cannon in Mar Mojot's design, so she decided to personally find out what the Archduchess was up to.

The Arch-Cardinal wrote:Protecting the Order's future. We've invested all we got on this, remember?

The Archduchess wrote:I do remember, and very well. I'm almost living at the expense of Mr. Münr.

The Arch-Cardinal wrote:Well, at least you can follow… hey, hello Mr. Münr! It's a pleasure to see you again.

The Engineer kissed the Arch-Cardinal's hand respectfully.

The Engineer wrote:I presume you've been waiting for me.

The Arch-Cardinal wrote:In fact, I was. I'd like to discuss with you about our machine's ‘mind’, so to speak.

* * *

“If she is going to give it a gun, at least let me give it a conscience.”. It was with this thought in mind that the Arch-Cardinal proposed to turn Mar Mojot into a full-fledged being, endowed with emotions, imagination and conscience, akin to a human being. Besides the Archduchess' protests over the possibility of this interfering with its dedication to its purpose, the Engineer thought this could be an interesting challenge.

The Engineer wrote:I will make sure a balance is achieved. Besides, the people at the First Bureau will make me a cake for giving them a reason to analyze a living brain.

Due to this unexpected additions, Mar Mojot took some more time to complete than it was expected. But after almost seven years, all tests have been performing successfully, a last reset had been done on its system, and the machine was ready for its final and permanent activation.

We should give it a name. What about, uh, Michael?

Michael, the Dragon, was about the find out the meaning of the word ‘life’.

Question: does TLTW qualifies as fan fiction?
Also, ChronosDragon and Dracomax: interested on being part of the story? Just a warning: the character in question is the Archduchess' (BlitzGirl) “pet”.

Pricklymolp and Molpypoke
(perhaps quite porcupine-y)
Perchanced upon a passing pair
With plain pates, quite un-spiny.

Molpypoke told Pricklymolp,
"Pip, pip! I'm pulling out:
These prancing people panic me
As they parade about!"

Pricklymolp told Molpypoke,
"Please proceed precisely;
I plan to peek at this odd pair,
See if they're cruel or nicely."

Molpypoke left Pricklymolp
But on a perch unstable
And presently the pig plunged down
His perfect plot disabled

Pricklymolp cried, "Molpypoke!
Pray, report of me
To all my pals and partners
And prodigious progeny!"

Molpypoke saw Pricklymolp
Painstakingly picked up
By the bald-pated person,
Just like a puckish pup.

Pricklymolp said, "Molpypoke,
Perhaps he plans no pain
Perhaps he'll pass me by
If I a placid pose retain!"

Molpypoke watched Pricklymolp
Placed back upon the ground
The pair proceeded pacing past
The pet that they had found

Pricklymolp and Molpypoke
Perched patient on the hill.
Perhaps long past this poor poem's end
They shall be Waiting still.

Wait on.

EDIT 2: Does TLTW qualifies as fan fiction? Of what?

From the bits I've seen, it appears to feature both original characters, and denizens of the OTT. Is that correct? (Sorry, I haven't had time to read it!)

If so, it would be XKCD Fandom RPF (Real Person Fiction).

Hmmm. Here in the US if you say that to someone whose family immigrated from Ukraine you get an earful and not in a good way. They treat that as an abomination imposed by USSR when it dominated Ukraine. In their minds, Ukraine is, has always been, and will always be Ukraine, their country; not a wheat growing province of Russia. Tread lightly on things that matter to lots of folks.

Pokeymolp's okay, he's just very good at Waiting. (Also probably a little dazed from his tumble down the hill.)

Cuegan only just exited the frame, so I expect him to stir in a newpix or two.

Yes its very funny. No, I haven't read the book. Few mathematicians would be so militant as that, actually, which is what makes it funny. It isn't what drives mathematicians (most mathematicians, again) to create, nor does it affect what they do. Just a kind of mildly interesting footnote.

On the other hand if someone decides to give us money!! Well, different altogether. Vastly interesting. Directly proportional to the amount of money, of course.

What to say, once again, about the beauty, genius, creativity, humor, talent, good-naturedness, awefulsomeness, generosity, bravado, tomfoolery, and occasional drunkenness that is the OTT???!!!?? WHAT I ASK YOU????????? I have just spent a bit of Time in a mini-ketchup and I'm filled with pride, and wonder, and not a little confusion, and the giggles, and consternation, and regret that I didn't have my Negroni made in time to join, and puzzlement over the appearance of the Little Prickly (or is that "Little Prickly," no "the"???), and further puzzlement over all the math/physics back-and-forth, and resignation at the enigma that is the English language, and I'm straining my brain to think of a bunch of words that begin with "p," and I'm positive there are particular portions of people's performances that I've passed on and for that please accept my 'pologies. I just LOVE all y'all. Even when I don't understand you. Probably more than ever, when I don't understand you.] I'm a Threadhead!!!

(This chapter turned out to be more difficult to write than I thought, for obvious reasons.)

Better, but it's all meaningless to me. I wonder if my creator gave me something to fix this.

Good. But can I recognize something?

Wait. That's my creator. His body posture and facial expression suggest he is happy. I wonder if it's because of me.

But yet, who are these other ‘human beings’?

It seems that the standard human affirmative response is to tilt the head in alternating up and down arcs along the sagittal plane.

The Engineer wrote:Good. Do you know who I am?

In human culture, the heart seems to symbolize the seat of life itself. Considering he is my creator, and therefore gave me life, using one of my paws to point to my heart would likely be an unexpected, and surprising, response. That is, if I had a heart, but he will likely understand the meaning. So, if I had a heart, it would be likely located… here.

Hmm. It seems they indeed didn't expect me to understand human symbolism so quickly. I wonder if this knowledge will ease or hamper the fulfillment of my purpose. Which I now realize I don't know what is.

The Engineer wrote:You're learning quickly.
This is going to be a very entertaining week.

This will be an unsigned long long chapter.

EDIT: fixed epigraph attribution.

The loss of innocence comes, eventually, to us all. As it turns out - some things are just not related.

Sorry to be a party pooper... kind of wish it was me... it's a really cool article! :)

Yes, I'm afraid I did. My apologies. I got confused by the similarity of the names and didn't think to check further. My , I'll go and edit the original to show there's new info about.

Yes, but I'm not convinced that the planck length interferes with the representation of the universe through the real numbers. I suppose it could indicate that the universe is finite, but that only would mean that an infinite collection is "good enough" to represent it.

BlitzGirl wrote:Here's a silly little original poem while we wait for the pokeymolp to move:

Spoiler:
Pricklymolp and Molpypoke

Pricklymolp and Molpypoke
(perhaps quite porcupine-y)
Perchanced upon a passing pair
With plain pates, quite un-spiny.

Molpypoke told Pricklymolp,
"Pip, pip! I'm pulling out:
These prancing people panic me
As they parade about!"

Pricklymolp told Molpypoke,
"Please proceed precisely;
I plan to peek at this odd pair,
See if they're cruel or nicely."

Molpypoke left Pricklymolp
But on a perch unstable
And presently the pig plunged down
His perfect plot disabled

Pricklymolp cried, "Molpypoke!
Pray, report of me
To all my pals and partners
And prodigious progeny!"

Molpypoke saw Pricklymolp
Painstakingly picked up
By the bald-pated person,
Just like a puckish pup.

Pricklymolp said, "Molpypoke,
Perhaps he plans no pain
Perhaps he'll pass me by
If I a placid pose retain!"

Molpypoke watched Pricklymolp
Placed back upon the ground
The pair proceeded pacing past
The pet that they had found

Pricklymolp and Molpypoke
Perched patient on the hill.
Perhaps long past this poor poem's end
They shall be Waiting still.
LOVED IT. :) You could turn it into a children's book and sell it.
Amen to that! (edited to fix quote - previous quote was a mis-paste)

Nah, you would have written it better. And had cool charts and shit. And YappoB would have sung the soundtrack as written by Blitzgirl, and there would have been cake at the end.

That was a perfect poem Blitzgirl, a pleasant 2xPtero Jovialbard, and power to the other people who plastered the place with p pre-fixes, practically pouring p patterned paint in pastel paletted puddles, piling post after post of p powered prose.

Made me think of that same song, too. I went to look up the lyrics and ended up listening to The Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkle's version.

And with this, I realize TLTW is starting to get somewhat off-topic.

The inhabitants of the space, or observers of it? I can almost get the idea of a flatland on a paper that is then rolled up, but the inhabitants just carry on as before, but to an outsider it looks like nothing, or like line-land or something.

As for "the" and when to use it, I think it is sort of how many their are of the thing. The Hudson, probably because for almost all rivers there are people for whom it is the main river, so it is understood which river when they say the river, but as people travel or learn more about other rivers we need to identify them, but 'the' was already established. Same with mountain ranges, but with mountains there are generally more of them, so you would always have a need to specify. Although, in Washington State it was normal to hear, "The Mountain is out today" and it is understood clearly that that means that Mount Rainier is visible.
