Here it comes. SOUND THE MORAL ALARM, ALL MEN TO MAXIM STATIONS! MOVE MOVE MOVE!

ETA: The moral of this story is actually Randall making fun of us for following it the whole time instead of being Outside.

Sounds more like he's making fun of the earliest Timewaiters, the Old Ones, who had nothing to do but watch the Sea and the Sandcastle, and never guessed that Time would one newpix show such things as beautiful beesnakes. With the same frame he rewards those of us who have followed Time so long. But I shall reserve final judgement until the next newpix, or after hearing Cueball's response.

FOR THE JUDGEMENT HAS COME AND IT IS MY 900TH POST AND ALL SHALL TREMBLE BEFORE MY BLACK DRAGONRAPTOR CAKE:

...Benevolent?

*blinks*
Oh. I suppose I can do the benevolent thing instead. Saves me some capital letters.
I hereby declare that I am immune from corruption by absolute power. I am a Knight Temporal, a wandering troubadour, and not given to the ways of maniacal laughter (much). Sorry 'bout that. Carry on.

Post-submission EDIT:
Well, mustard; ggh's post is gone. Now what's to stop me from going all evil?

Post-submission EDIT the 2nd:
Oh good, it's back, in the post after mine. That's a relief. Now I'm simply prescient in my renouncement of evil.

Buttermolpyfacebugbeesnakes!
Whoever predicted that they would try to change the subject was right...
And someone should probably check on blitzgirl, she might have immunity, but she clearly isn't immune to THE THIRST FOR POWER!

But, don't you see, I've had the power ALL ALONG!
It was I who predicted the subject change! Behold:

BlitzGirl wrote:I wonder if Cuegan is going to change the subject and talk about the beesnake, or continue to stare at each other stubbornly?

I sure am glad you're a benevolent leader outside of fanfics!

Hey, your next post is 900. 2*2*3*3*5*5: I wonder if that relates to any poetic form. Congrats! (in advance)

Edit: Oops, sorry for disturbing the fabric of Time by deleting this post to edit it, and thus making my post after your response.

Edit 2: PagePope! Ooh! Can we play an OTT version of In My Pants? Normally you take a movie title, add "In my pants" and presto - funnier! Like: Searching for Bobby Fischer in my Pants! It's awesome if you're like 9 years old. I'll start: What about: I wonder if it's an echidna in my pants.

Spoiler:
Pricklymolp and Molpypoke

Pricklymolp and Molpypoke
(perhaps quite porcupine-y)
Perchanced upon a passing pair
With plain pates, quite un-spiny.

Molpypoke told Pricklymolp,
"Pip, pip! I'm pulling out:
These prancing people panic me
As they parade about!"

Pricklymolp told Molpypoke,
"Please proceed precisely;
I plan to peek at this odd pair,
See if they're cruel or nicely."

Molpypoke left Pricklymolp
But on a perch unstable
And presently the pig plunged down
His perfect plot disabled

Pricklymolp cried, "Molpypoke!
Pray, report of me
To all my pals and partners
And prodigious progeny!"

Molpypoke saw Pricklymolp
Painstakingly picked up
By the bald-pated person,
Just like a puckish pup.

Pricklymolp said, "Molpypoke,
Perhaps he plans no pain
Perhaps he'll pass me by
If I a placid pose retain!"

Molpypoke watched Pricklymolp
Placed back upon the ground
The pair proceeded pacing past
The pet that they had found

Pricklymolp and Molpypoke
Perched patient on the hill.
Perhaps long past this poor poem's end
They shall be Waiting still.

LOVED IT. :) You could turn it into a children's book and sell it.

Or give it away. Smashing.

Yup. I think it could be the crisis that defines the story (as opposed to the first crisis - the sea - which motivated the story and defined the setting).

Eh, I actually have to go with the halfway point idea, or even that we're 3/5th of the way done. Of course, you could be right, and we're only 3/5th through the introduction... but guessing on the feeling of the comic, I don't think this is the introduction anymore. They're already made the decision to go out there.

But hey, I like your raptor idea, so I hope I'm wrong.

Look at us. Some of the smartest, saying some of the dumbest (not really). Simple example: no one can seem to say the correct "tenet|tenant". In the midst of high brow stuff there's a common error. So, in summation, this is what makes M&C human, not uncannily unhuman. Or something.

AluisioASG, I finally went back and read all of TLTW, and I'm really enjoying it. The last few chapters have had me on the edge of my seat, and the recent scene was really quite shocking. (I won't say more in case there's someone else that is not reading the current installments till they ketchup on earlier ones.) Really great job.

I don't remember what it was, but it was some kind of numerical thing, as if we were waiting for a frame number that had particularly interesting mathematical properties. Lots of awesome in your post, too! Thanks for sharing your comavision (hey, that's what they'll call it when they invent a TV that can record and replay your dreams: "Now with Coma-Vision!" Oh. I'd only ever heard him referred to as Johann Sebastian Bach. (Well, I have heard him called John Brook a couple times, but I thought it was only as a joke.) Is that not actually his name?

In general, I just don't recall hearing of someone called by a translation of their name, unless it was a 'new' name they'd deliberately adopted after moving to another country.

I started to write that I think that in the U.S. we tend to call people by their name as it would be called in their home country. But we do say Christopher Columbus rather than Cristoforo Colombo, for instance. Hmm, now I'll have to ponder that some more, and think about other people whose names have been Anglicized (other than people who changed it themselves).

Eutychus wrote:And to return to something I posted many many pages ago (back in the sandcastle era I think), I find the dialogue really unsettling, too, in an Uncanny Valley sort of way. Megan and Cueball oscillate between apparently deep insights and almost total naivety in a way that just doesn't seem quite right.

I tend to agree with you. I do think the dialogue is...odd. I think you described it perfectly. I feel that there is some meaning, not just in what they say, but in what they know and don't know, and what it says about how they see their world.

And now, I must coma. Good night, Mrs. MobTeeseboose, wherever you are in my pants.

TMI, BlitzGirl. :)

I meant to reply to this comment by my BFF:
azule wrote:Look at us. Some of the smartest, saying some of the dumbest (not really). Simple example: no one can seem to say the correct "tenet|tenant". In the midst of high brow stuff there's a common error. Inexcusable, right? No, it's fine. We're human. We have areas of expertise and other areas of, uh, non-expertise. *points to left* You see?

Well, it may be a common error, but I wouldn't say that no one can say it correctly. It's very easy:
The tenants of our law decree that... damn, that's not right. OK, let me try again:
Owning a house is much better than being a tenet...Augh! What's happening?
We kicked out the tenets because they weren't following our tenants...Ok, I give up. I guess you're right.

Wait, how about this: How many ants are there? Tenants.
Are we going to the store tomorrow? No, let's go tenet.
Ah, problem solved.

And because I've apparently completely lost my mind, I really am going to coma in my pants.

Edited to say: I see Roia is browsing the forum! We haven't seen her in awhilw. Not sure if she's in the present or not, but hi Roia!
Edit2: And now she's gone. :(

I've been examining the filenames (hashes) and have found something astonishing.
First, here's the hashes from the 2nd to 17th Frame, as archived by MScha
Spoiler:
Image
To the naked eye, they are simply mysterious.

Let's take a sample of them, so we aren't overwhelmed by the amount of data. We'll look at just the first 6 hex digits in each row.
Spoiler:
Image
Still mysterious, but just enough for us to be whelmed.

Now, we zoom in, just a little.
Spoiler:
Image
In octal, the secret still has not been revealed.

Let's zoom all the way.
Spoiler:
Image
In binary we can start to make something out, but we need more sophisticated tools.

Let's see if we can enhance that a little.
Spoiler:
Image
My oh my.

And if I crank up the enhancement to 11.
Spoiler:
Image
ENHANCED!

Phew that was tricky. Tools used: MScha's list of Frames, thank you, Internet Explorer, Excel, Notepad, Paint, DropBox, Safari. If you think I'm going to mention the tool in my pants, you're childisher than I imagined.

I'm forgoing coma tonight (or technically last night as it's almost noon), as I'm not tired and there's plenty to be doing in my pants.

When this page is over I'm going to be sad in my pants :(

I approve of your enhancement skills, Exodies. :)

I hope something exciting happens in the OTC in the next few newpix. I wanna see the top, too. But even regular pixel-movement would be 3. I feel like going molpy-hunting in my pants.

I have decided to do some proper Blitzing, from beginning to end, without peeking at our future. But to be unique, I have set myself a little challenge, to respond to every last post of a page. Such Fun!

Pages 1 to 5

I kinda hope it's as simplistic as it seems, but it may not be. Note that the url of the image is quite different from the url of normal comics images. More precisely, when you open this image on its own, you are redirected to a non-standard url:
http://origin.imgs.xkcd.com/comics/time ... 420672.png
Whereas, for example, "Voyager 1" is at:
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/voyager_1.png

I noticed that too. The morbid side of me says that one of them is going to suddenly disappear. (Does the page maybe set a cookie to track the initial time you viewed the comic?)
That does not appear to be the case. My browser is reporting no cookies from XKCD other than old ones.

Almost certainly not cookie-based, from opening more browsers that I usually don't browse from.
Might be based from IP traffic? Anyone got multiple computers behind a NAT box to compare?

Okay, so not cookie based, but if it were then we might be able to eat (well, delete) them!

If you quote phlip's very blank post on page two, (it's not the last one, so don't worry, I'm not inserting it) you get a LOT more than you bargained for!

Levi Dettwyler wrote:Guys,

Imagine how long this could feasibly go on for. As someone on explainxkcd pointed out, 5 years from now, there very well could be a tree growing there. They're simple enough to draw. He could just do them whole batches at a time. Who knows?

My guess is that it's all been drawn already, and that it loops every 24 hours, or perhaps every week.

I'm pretty sure it's already been drawn, given the length of this thread and what is going on in The Future, but I doubt it'll ever be looped. Replayed, possibly, but not loopily.

Murrow's post on the third page is terrifying! I mean the one with all the complicated stuff in, and not the one at the bottom of the page.

murrow wrote:I was hoping to learn some c tonight, not bang my head against hashcat for 3 hours.

Ow. C sounds more interesting than bashing your head!

crawlkill wrote:maybe this'll end up being a joke and not a meditation on death after all. sincerely hope so.

Well, that's a bit grim, when the only options are cake joke or death.

I like Metoo's shark prophesy, unlikely though it is.
Aubronwood appears!

crawlkill wrote:The algorithm talk is ancient. Some joke about strange google searches turning up XKCD...or something.

So I just haven't scrolled down the main page in a really long time. Thanks.

I happened to notice it today, and wasn't sure if it was poking fun at everyone trying to break whatever code he's using for today's comic.

Ahh well, we prefer to look at the main feature rather than the side alongs. Stuff happens.

I've just realised how long it'll take and how many posts it'll take if I were to quote and comment on every single last Newpage end-post. New rules: I can only quote and respond directly to last-posts. I can also comment on other things, but not as a direct retaliation or anything like that, just mentions of 'this thing happened' or 'this thing is scary' or something. Or cake.

Have fun!
