Oh dear. I was goat to get the ong. But Now am I pope?

Hehehe. Poped again. And I can't be depoped without doing it myself or collusion among the tribe members. Prepare to be popped by the pope.

I declare a competition for the best memorial in song, png, or poem to the buttermolpyfacebugbeesnake. BlitzGirl and Angelastic will judge.

Note the change BlitzGirl and Angelastic will judge the competition. Disagreements will be settled via a similar contest judged by everyone.

Although the content of what they say can be odd, the syntax is odder still. None of it is actually wrong, but it just doesn't sound right.

My latest insight/comparison is that it reads like someone who has spoken English for a very long time, but for whom English is not their first language. In terms of grammar and syntax, you can't fault it, but for some reason you can't quite put your finger on, you know a native speaker wouldn't say it that way.

I'm not sure what, if anything, this means.

And is that butterbeeflythingy a mini-drone going off to report on them?

Funny, I don't get that at all. Yeah, they're kind of inconsistent about how much they seem to know, but their grasp on the language seems to be native-level...

Actually, I think I might know what's going on. They're using the sort of wording and syntax you'd get from spoken english - which, technically, it kind of is - whereas we're using to reading it as if it's written english. It makes perfect sense as an actual conversation two people might have, if you read it out loud, but on the page it looks kinda funny and incomplete.

This might be it. But why isn't this the case for every other webcomic? I think its that, coupled with Cuegan only describing things in simple terms.

I agree, but wanted to add, that it seems to me, there's an underlying logic to what they say. For instance:

"This is what the first part of not ending looks like"

That's a perfectly good sentence, spoken, I think, the way a native speaker would say it, but it is still an odd sentence. Some of the oddness comes from the way it parses - not ending is a single concept that we are supposed to imagine the first part of. Some of the oddness comes from a different way of looking at the world - what would the early stages (first part of) something that goes on forever (not ending) look like?

It does seem consistent with an xkcd way of looking at things, though. Somewhat slant.

And, to satisfy papal decree,

Life has no meaning
Beauty and the beholder
Except what we give
Always act to increase the survival chances of the largest group you are a part of.

Yeah, centipost. To be honest I never thought I'd make it here. My plan was to post once or twice and then quietly slip back into silence, but y’alls have pulled me in. Now my username does seem a bit odd, but oh well.

To celebrate, I'd like to try my hand at poetry/filking/parodying/whatever this is. Actually, I'm pretty sure that the "original" is some kind of joke (I've never heard more than the first line). Anyway, I basically kept the same rhythm and rhymed throughout and…oh dear I’m rambling. Here, just read it.

There once was a man from Nantucket,
Spoiler:
who found a comic that read "Wait for it".

And wait he did in the One True Thread,
while visions of molpies danced in his head.

His coma-ing was cut to the bone,
Trying to be the next pope on a throne.

Blitzing ‘till his eyes began to rot,
He’s gotta ONG before the NewPixBot.

Then the end of Time came.
He simply said it was lame.

And calmly went on with his day

******
Yes, I know it’s a terrible ending, but I just liked the way it flowed and couldn’t think of anything less heretical. Let’s just say that it is a narrative and I in no way condone the views or opinions of men from Nantucket.

And now per papal decree.

Alas, poor Beesnake! I knew him,
Cueball. A fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent wings. He
hath flown upon his back a thousand times. And now how abhorred
in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here flapped those
wings that I have watch'd I know not how oft. Where be your gibes
now? your gambols? your filks? your flashes of flight that
were wont to set Megan on a climb? Not one now, to mock your
own spinning? Quite chap- fall'n? Now get you to my lady's
chamber, and tell her, let her climb a cue tall, to this
sea she must come. Make her laugh at that.

Beauty reaches high,
Cavorts on wings of color.
One chomp. All is gone.

===

Higgledy-piggledy
flapping and frolicking
Nary a care had the
beesnake today.

Hungry, a rapter came
aerodynamically
diving for lunch in a
rapid ballet.

Poor molpybeesnake. I
hope it was painless, the
moment your beauty was
taken away.

That's all I have in the
poetry section. I'll
post something else maybe
later.

You could provide this link:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=101043&start=1600#p3305116

which is to the post immediately following the spoiler.

Since it is so close to the top of the thread, you could also post, in a spoiler, the text of the prior two posts, but that far ahead it would likely be a spoiler itself. Something like the below:

BLITZERS: Under the spoiler are quoted the first two posts from NewPage 41, a cleansed-of-spoiler version of the third post, and a link to the fourth post, to bypass the third post, which has a current TIME image, so is a spoiler for Blitzers. You may save this post, and return to it (uncovering the spoiler) when you are ready for NewPage 41 instead of going to NP 41 directly.

There used to be a neutral pronoun in middle English, I believe, but it has not been used for centuries. So that practice is the outdated one.

Plural genders is the most common, but it's terrible English. It's used today with the same veracity as ain't and ya'll. But still totally acceptable :)

Chugity-Buggity
Molpybeefacebugfly
Tried to reach higher air
    wanting to soar.

When out of nowhere there
came a swift raptor thing
Eying its snack as it
    let out a 'roar.'

Our little Molpy was
caught in the upstream and
had not a moment to
    alter its course.

Gasping we watched as the
raptor descended, it
captured its meal with a
    predators force.

Staring in horror at
GLR's symphony
We realized it is just
    nature's true storm.

So we all bowed our heads
To celebrate the life
biodiversity
    in comic form.

I hope you're slumbering
peacefully somewhere sweet

My epic tribute to the fallen beesnake…

Buzz Along
A filk of Storm Along by Wilderun (itself loosely based on a traditional sea shanty)

[Folky verses]
Oh Beesnake's gone, the good ol' bug
To my aye now, buzz along!
Oh Beesnake's gone, the good ol' bug
Aye aye beesnake, buzz along!
Spoiler:
They dug his grave with a semencancer spade
To my aye now, buzz along!
A shroud of finest coffeebabies was made
Aye aye beesnake, buzz along!

[Epic metal verse!]
He's buzzed off now to a better place
To my aye, BUZZ ALONG!
No danger now from raptors' chase
Aye aye, buzz along!

[Back to folky verse]
Of molpies brave he was the best
To my aye now, buzz along!
But now he's gone and he's at rest
Aye aye beesnake, buzz along!

[Metal again!]
Old Beesnake's heard the angel's call
To my aye, BUZZ ALONG!
So sing his dirge now one and all…

I recall the day the rising sea
Engulfed all our neat trees
Fate was stripped from our hands

Waves the size of mountainsides
Bludgeoned us one by one,
But Beesnake saved so many
Under the veil of the blackened sun

[Gentle ballad section]
As the winds came to a calm
The bright sun awoke in the dawn
We stood in silence endlessly
And gazed out over the big sea

As we turned our heads
And looked back t'wards the shore
Our hearts sunk ever low
For our molpy was no more

Still his body lay
At the breaking of the day
We lowered him with a tiny chain
Our eyes dim with more than rain

[And back to the metal!]
He lies in an earthen bed
Our hearts are sore, our eyes are red

[And all together now for the epic final chorus!]
Buzz along, we must now venture on
Into the beauty of the great big sea
Our will must not become undone
Journey ONGwards, far as our eyes can see

Oh, do not mourn for long
Let our words ring on in his memory
The vast horizon draws us near
Journey ONGwards...

80/864 (Hell, this thread is massive  )

Spoiler:
Guessing the number of frames looks interesting - I vouch 12345, just for the heck of it!

Colourful text just looks nice. I like colours.

Caffeinated sleep deprivation. Me today as I woke at 3 am, and am now caffeinated.

I occasionally have vivid hallucinations during my coma, usually when there's been a break in sleep. I wish I could experience ones about Time.

Time zones. Because we all have them.

Measures of Newpix are also awesome, but THEY WILL CHANGE!

Oh no, Chinese symbols. Chinese isn't a bad language, but I don't know any and I will have to use an online translator for that purpose. Which won't be totally accurate. *grumble* I see why there's so much of a problem with tiny text, so I'm going to write in large.

Or not.

And Google Translate didn't make any sense of it... :(

And Time filking begins! Sort of. Cake?

Coma coma coma coma coma coma coma! It is getting into usage.

References to OtherComics and posting OtherComics is also awesome and makes me feel knowledgeable. Which is also weird but on the other hand is neat.

And the discussion on what we call ourselves begins.

Holy brainstorm Batman thirds, that's brilliant. And I love your avatar by the way. Oh gosh now I sound like some crazed fan.

Thanks! I don't have a hat, though, nor a place to hang it.

I am neither Vytron, nor HAL9000, but I felt like you deserved a hat. So I bootleg-made you one, divided into thirds:

I think you mean ambiguous. Y'all refers to a select group which could be singular or plural e.g. "How y'all doin". All y'all is always plural and refers to a general group, or everyone within ear shot "All y'all listen up now".
Edit: Of course there's also "yous guys" if you're in the vicinity of New Jersey.

“Y'all” grates on my nerves largely because it's used incorrectly so often. If the phrase “you all” can be properly substituted, then “y'all” is a correct dialect-specific second-person plural.
But I really can't stand it when “y'all” is used by people from outside of the “y'all” zone. I will not tolerate my children using the term, and I try to, um, discourage my Wisconsinite man from using it as well. (Of course, this leads to him trying to fit “y'all” into sentences as many times as he can, but if he gets too silly he laughs so hard that he can't breathe, so it's a self-limiting irritation )

On the other hand, American English really needs a second-person plural. “Y'all” is already entrenched in much of the country, but I've been waging a campaign for the use of “youse” for a few years now.

Er, shirly that should be "American English really needs a second-person singular"?

Drat, naturally I can't find my copy of The Well Tempered Sentence when I need it. Wikipedia has the most comprehensive explanation I'm finding in a quick search, here's a paraphrase:

Grammatical person in nominative case English pronouns
Standard
I First person singular
We First person plural
You Second person singular / second person plural
He Third person masculine singular masculine
She Third person feminine singular feminine
It Third person neuter singular neuter
They Third person plural / third person gender-neutral singular

Colloquial
Youse Second person plural, dialect Scouse, Australian English, Scottish English, Irish English.
Ye Second person plural, dialectal Hiberno-English
You guys Second person plural, dialectal American English and Canadian English
Y'all Second person plural, dialectal Southern American and African American English
Yinz Second person plural, dialectal Scottish English, Pittsburgh English

Archaic
Thou Second person singular, archaic
Ye Second person plural, archaic

No, my point was that using ‘you’ for both singular and plural in second person leads to ambiguities which can be inconvenient, troublesome, and downright annoying (the worst of the worst, obviously.) A clearly plural second person pronoun is what I meant. (Whew! Thought I'd really messed up, there.) I'm pleased to see that I could also comfortably claim ‘yinz’ if I chose, although I wish it used an apostrophe.

Oh, and please don't call me Shirley

Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.
Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.

OMR, look at all those awesomeful memorials for that poor buttermolpy...

Looks like the NP isn't full yet, so I'll add my own meager contribution in the way I can do best: an animation of the final scene of its life.

@BlueCrab, I think the point is that "you" was originally the second person plural, and then started doing double duty as the singular when "thou" went out of fashion. So what we need is not a new word for a second person plural; we need to relegate "you" back to being only a second person plural again, and bring back a distinct word for the second person singular.

Inspired by theMinim's latest ramblings, I went to the past to get a feel for what was going on back then. I found this post on NP81, from [heretic]March 28th[/heretic].

Spoiler:
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only commentator on this this thread whose first thought on awakening this morning was something along the lines of, "Oh! I wonder how far they got over night! I've got to go check!"

Now that we see the continuing progress it's become all too painfully clear that this can - and most likely will - go on for days, weeks, maybe longer. After all, we all know that Mr. Randall Monroe has far more time on his hands than common sense, as we saw from the Cut and Past episode. How much time do you think it takes him to generate a new frame, when all that changes from the previous one is a couple of stick figures and maybe a few pixels of sand?

The guy has us, and he has us bad.

I'm afraid the time has come to act, before more lives are irreparably ruined. I'm not sure what the solution is - teams assigned to watch over the strip in shifts? Designated authors to keep the thread active while others get some rest (or worse - get some work done)?

And what of those hard-core who have not slept for more than 25 minutes at a stretch since early Monday morning (you know who you are)? Should we start to make arrangements for food deliveries? Contact numbers for family or other loved ones who can apply the occasional sponge bath (in 25 minutes or less)??
People, we are not sheep. The time has come to grasp the bull by the tail and look the situation square in the face! This is our internet time we're talking aobut!!!!
belliott was right. This Time thing has continued for nearly 3 mips now, and does not show any sign of stopping. Even though he hasn'g logged on since April 29th, I'm sure belloit would rest well knowing his warning was being kept alive (completely ignored, but alive).

I've been so involved in all the poetry for the buttermolpyfacebugbeesnake I didn't even realize Megan had climbed the cliff. When I saw this one, and it registered, I had to Book of Aubron the last few frames.

At least they found a way up! Hopefully Cueball doesn't run in to any slipping issues.

Audubon member chiming in here. IRL raptors such as the smaller falcons are happy to eat medium-to-large moths. There was a famous clip from some night baseball game a few years back (for you non USAians out there, baseball has rather a lot of downtime) in which a camera found a peregrine falcon near the foul pole, happily perched and munching down on a 2-inch moth. Swallows and swifts do catch small bugs on the fly, but at the apparent range in the image, we shouldn't be able to see the beesnakebuglpy that they'd be after.

Off topic - and then there's this (warning, this video shows a bird being annihilated by a pitched baseball.)
