Just a pope, but not an onger. Ninja'd by Mscha.

But since he got the goat, I'll need to reward him by formally decreeing:
No more shout-whispering on this page.

Of course, you know my opinion about popes, so you are "free" to ignore this, thus risking Fluffy's wrath.

Furthermore, I'll declare that ChronosDragon shall read the OTT All Day. (future ninja'd as well as past)

FUNNY, THIS COINCIDES WITH THE NAVYS SWITCH IN COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL. THEY NOW USE LOWER CASE AS WELL AFTER 150 YEARS OR SO ONLY UPPER CASE.

[smcaps]Typing in all caps seems ... hard. Especially when there are lots of punctuation (comma, semicolon, hypenated-words, etc.). Isn't there a BBcode for that? Maybe smcaps or some such code?[/smcaps]

PS: YES, I DID A PREVIEW AND KNOW MY PREVIOUS TEXT WAS NOT CAPITALIZED.

You know, I go back and forth constantly between being a Randallversist (my surrealist heart really wants this) and an Africanist (my professional cartographer heart really wants this). This simple post from SBN really spoke my Randallversist side. This is a beautiful idea I really like. I would love if that was the case.

Also, I've been contemplating The End. For a long time, a loop seemed to make sense to me, just so that it could perpetuate forever. However, the more I think about it, I think I really hope that it eventually has an ending, especially because I see the comic on the whole as an allegory of life, and it therefore deserves a death. Also, it dawned on me that it doesn't have to loop in order to perpetuate. He could still end it properly and beautifully without it having to loop, and then restart it so it can be enjoyed over and over again ad infinitum.

That happened to me a few weeks ago. It's great. :P Enabled me to finally delurk again a mip ago.
In Svithjod, there stands a rock. It is 100 miles high and 100 miles wide. Once every 1000 years a little bird comes to this rock to sharpen its beak. One time, I changed just the last sentence of this signature, and lots of you noticed. Image

I would like all to know that, despite the fact that I am, once again, having a rather awful day at work, you have all cheered me up to no end by following my ridiculous Papal Decree. And for those of you who choose not to, that made me laugh, too. Thanks all. It is nice, on bad days, to be reminded as to why I come here

BlitzGirl, this CAN'T be easy, and yet, much like Robinson Cano chasing down a grounder, spinning, lazily tossing to first and getting the runner out, you make it appear so.

Fish to water, raptors to air, English majors to poetry spoofs, I always say. Thank you!

Thanks! Though much of the reason why I posted so quickly is because I needed to coma. I needed it to be on the capitalization-less newpage, and I knew when I returned from coma that newpage would be over, so nothing for it but to post right then and there. :)

Indeed, I originally thought to capitalize Megan (hence why "Megan" was chosen as substitute for "Women"), but I soon realized that would put me in violation of the latest decree. The parenthesis I outright missed, but in my defense, it was 2amH. The original poem is one of my favorite pieces to read aloud, so I spent most of my concentration on matching its rhythms.

I plan on typing it as "ottification" even on newpages without lowercase decrees. For some reason Timification and Timeody both confuzzle my head - I can't help but read them as "Tim-yakkityyak" instead of "Time-yakkityyak." I don't know who Tim is, or why we should Tim-ify our Tim-eodies. Image

Something interesting for Mac users. You can put ChronosDragon's Newpix-O-Meter into Dashboard for use as a clock. In Safari, select Open in Dashboard from the File menu and select it. It seems to work fine.

schism =/= almost-flamewar. (Small-caps though, that might incite one, but hopefully they'll stay on the previous page and only annoy the blitzers.)

Edit: I don't mean that I want the blitzers to be annoyed, I just meant that they wouldn't spread and annoy people on upcoming pages. (And, I wanted to point out, again, how annoying it is when posts are hard to read.)

Just posting to say how wonderful that "My Favorite Things" ottification was, BlitzGirl, and to welcome CameronCat and LittleBunnyFuFu to our fold. CameronCat, that was awesome; you are welcome in the Order of the Holy Contradiction any time you like. I'll speak to the stage manager about those cues... she seems to have no trouble saying "Cue 34 GO!, Cue 35 GO!..." but to tell the truth, some of our other backstage people are... well... let's just say that the space between their ears makes a great fly-loft. (And you wonder why producers have ulcers!)

Hats come by request. A few hats were gifts of honor, but by and large, just ask (Vytron is in the hattery right now, IIRC)

LittleBunnyFuFu wrote:Just tossing this out there as an idea but what about it lining up with the solstice? It looks like something big is going to happen soon (top of the mountain) and the solstice is only a few days away. Also the start of 1190 was March 25, just after the equinox.
Interesting thought, though there is little to go on. What kind of "something big" are you thinking of? Story-wise, I am looking for them to meet somebody. We're kind of close to the last "wow" event for another one (like the top of a mountain) and they haven't actually been climbing in the mountans for very much. So... we'll just have to, well, you know.

==

I don't see anything wrong with "filk" as applied here, but of the other words suggested, ottification works best for me. And yes, a book of the OTT would be kinda neat, but so much of it would not translate all that well. Of course, the advantage would be that it would be immune to bit rot.

Neattrees and weirdtrees and wowtrees with scratches
Cuegan together hike smooth and rough patches
Trebuchet action, the pebbles it flings
Just look at Time for my favorite things

When you ketchup
When the ONG dings
When it gets quite Mad
The OTT looks for my favorite things
Wait more and you'll feel quite glad

Words cannot begin to express my absolute love for this OTTification. I do not know that I could adequately describe the joy that this song has brought me. Thank you.

I don't know who Tim is, or why we should Tim-ify our Tim-eodies.

Tim is my Enchanter, didn't I explain that? Unfortunately, all he knows of the OTT is my perpetual ‘ooh-ing,’ my occasional giggling, and my endless ‘hang on, I have to save this... No, just a sec, there are a couple of tweaks I have to make to this post... Wait, I've just got to...’ so he wouldn't really appreciate the efforts :P
I'm partial to ottification, myself, because it's OTT-specific and not form-specific, but I don't see why we can't individually use whichever we like, or any other term that occurs.

Aaagh! I have no choice!

The Lone Sandcastle
(to the tune of "The Lonely Goatherd" from The Sound of Music)
Spoiler:
Down by the sea was a lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Cuegan just building a lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Small trebuchet set off with a fast pull
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Down came the walls of the lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp chirp
Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp
Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp chirp
Chirpy chirpy chirp chirp chirp

Set off again toting their knapsacks full
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Said their goodbyes to the lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

How could they leave their grand Sandcastle?
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Cuegan judged it wasn't worth the hassle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp chirp
Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp
Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp chirp
Chirpy chirpy chirp chirp chirp

Seemed that the Sea would win the battle
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Eating away at the lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Then came a girl, her beret a-tassled
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Can LaPetite save our dear Sandcastle?
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

[timeyodelling of the timeody] *cringe*

Seemed that the Sea would win the battle
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Eating away at the lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Then came a girl, her beret a-tassled
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Can LaPetite save our dear Sandcastle?
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Waiting are we, playing with the squirpy
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Can't see the shore; we're stuck with the chirpy
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Chirpy chirpy...
Chirpy chirpy.. (chirpy chirpy)
Chirpy chirp chirpy (Chirpy chirp chirpy)
Chirpy chirpy.. (chirpy chirpy)

Chirpy can you go away? (chirpy chirpy go away)
Can we get back to the Sea? (chirpy back down by the Sea)
Chirpy chirpy set us free (chirpy chirpy chirp no way)
Chirpy chirpy chirpy CHIRPY go away! Go!

I'd like to thank the chirpy for being so annoying, and the word "castle" for being so difficult to rhyme with.

I think you mean ambiguous. Y'all refers to a select group which could be singular or plural e.g. "How y'all doin". All y'all is always plural and refers to a general group, or everyone within ear shot "All y'all listen up now".

Edit: Of course there's also "yous guys" if you're in the vicinity of New Jersey.

Edit2: Everything old is new again, again, again, again...

Legos. Discuss.

But I do call a single brick a lego, and a pile of them legos. Also you could say that the sandbox is full of sands if you are sand connoisseur and have assembled a collection of exotic sands from around the world, separating each different sand variety into a different area of the sand box.

No, no, let's not bring up the legos thing again. Let's talk about rices this time. Because with that, EVERYBODY uses the word wrong.
Generally, if you think of something as a collection of discrete elements you append an s. If you think of it as a volume or body, you do not. Rice, sand, water, and for some people Lego is a body or volume. I see legos as a collection of discrete pieces. For a mouse rices might actually make sense as a term.

e.g. "Hey Mickey, are you going to eat all 5 of those rices?"

Wouldn't it make more sense to say "Hey Mickey, are you going to eat all 5 grains of rice?" as we would say "Hey human, are you going to eat all 5 loaves of bread?"?

Actually, it would make far more sense to say "oh, Mickey, you're so fine, your so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey!" Oh, wait, that doesn't make sense at all...

"Hey, Cueball, your so fine...."

Edit: Oh wait, you already did that. *slaps forehead with hand*

Indeed. "Weird" was originally "Wyrd", an Anglo-Saxon deity.

Note the spelling of the last word. You can't make this stuff up.

And "Wyrd" meant fate. Also, theres a second half to the rule "i before e, except after C...Except on the sounding of 'A' as in Weigh or neigh"

Decree: We need more discussion on hedgehog vs. tenrec. And dancing. Yes, we need more dancing.
And to defend myself against the insolence displayed 2 NewPages ago, Inquisitors who disregard papal decrees shall be disinquisitored.

Hah! You can't do anything to me, as the inquisition very specifically did not pledge allegiance to any faction(Seriously, go back and check), and the papacy has been disbanded. We did this with the understanding that in order to be able to punish even the very high, we could not be under the authority of the very high.
Yes, we are, and always have been, a rogue organization. it's funnier that way.

jovialbard wrote:Good points, but you don't say the Jupiter either... so why do you say the Hudson... <head scratch>
When you say "The Hudson" you are really saying "The Hudson (River)", which is really "The (Hudson) River". It's just a bit of breve-jive that became standard. Or, another way of putting it, there are sometimes ghost words in English sentences, and they have to be considered. Thus the cookie (the Oreo cookie) becomes the Oreo, and the brick (the Lego brick) becomes the Lego.

BlitzGirl wrote:Interesting. Just off the top of my head, this trick seems to work with rivers (the Hudson), deserts (the Mojave), mountain ranges (the Alps), certain buildings (the Met), ships (the Titanic), people (the Englishman), and certain horses beloved by readers of Walter Farley (the Black).

Well, let's not get into horses names, they're always a bunch of nonsense. But I think those are all great examples BlitzGirl, and they tie in well with what ucim is saying. In most of the cases you mention, except the darn horse, there is an implied generic identifier at the end: The Hudson river, the Mojave desert, the Alp mountains (oreos/legos!!!), the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But you wouldn't say the Jupiter planet, or the Mary person. The Titanic... I donno, I guess it's like a big metal water horse...

edit: ninja'd

I wasn't going to comment on this, but...
You need "river" in the name, because it is also the name of the basin, and the bay, i.e. the Hudson Bay, the Hudson River basin, etc. You need the because Hudson is the modifier to "river" --effectively the river of Hudson Valley.

Similar to how you would refer to the great spot of Jupiter, or The Mars Pyramid.

Oh oh - I just realized, it would be really easy to make into a windows gadget (for vista and 7 - no 8 because microsoft is lame) because they are basically little snippets of html on the desktop. I'd have to do something about the transparency, though - right now it uses a white matte because that looks fine on the forums, but on desktops with potentially dark backgrounds it might not. Will look into it.

Haven't posted in a few dax, but I love all the great stuff. New songs, major new fiction chapters, great firstposting new waiters (welcome!), new poetry. Be aware that poetry parodies can lead to some dark places though...

Black pixels of TIme we drink them at dusk
We drink them at noon and at daybreak we drink them at night
We drink and we drink
We are digging a thread on the Internet and there's room for us all
Randall lives at the site he plays with the molpies he draws
He draws when it darkens to Africa your golden hair LaPetite...

:( :? :x :(

Is doing all the songs of The Sound of Music inevitable now? I'm going to assume so, because I need a change of mood.

The hills are alive
And it's kinda frightening...

Okay, that needs some work. I'll be back soon.

Well, hello to all.
Sis hasn't written back yet but I thought I should thank all of you for the warm welcome and the cupcakes. I am honored.Interesting church, this; no formal doctrine on communion or other sacred meals but when an Elder (or Lector or anyone else) declares "Cupcakes for everybody" it becomes a religious experience.

I agree that "filk" or "parody" or "take-off" or other terms do not do justice to the quality of the hymns and psalms written by the congregation. Most are flat-out excellent in their choice of text, depth of meaning and meter. Well done to all (and way out of my league.) I was going to offer Canticle as an option (hey, there's already texticles...) but after looking around I must say I really like Songody as a term of choice. It's also close enough to hymnody or psalmnody to fit the need. I would also offer a German construction of "Wartemusik" or "waiting music." Pronounce the W as an English "v" and it sound pretty neat as a spoken word, too. (No it's NOT "water music", but could it be OTTermusik?)

@ Ucim: I am honored to join the Order of the Holy Contradiction and accept my appointment as Apprentice Curmudgeon. I shall live a contradictory life of Faith and no works or perhaps the other way around.

...let's just say that the space between their ears makes a great fly-loft.

If this were a different group, that'd be sigged. Loved it, and well played!

Your stage manager's life and that of her minions will be much easier if the cues are called by department and everybody has their own list:
Lighting (or LX or Lights) Q12: Go
LX 13 and Spot 1: Ready, no color, pick up the Molpy US left...Go
Audio 22: Go
(Fly) Rail 8: with the music....Go.

Oh, 'scuse me; I have to , er, go.
