Wiki-Warrior to the rescue! They've actually slept at least four times that we've seen during the Journey Eon, during each of the following Periods:
*Fake Loop
*Second River Period
*The Tree Period
*Tiny River Period

Wow, I guess my memory wasn't as good as I thought it was (although I've memorized pi to like the 50th digit). They could still use the shelter though and it's amazing how far Cuegan has gone, looking back. That's actually the first time I've been to the wiki and you all/y'all/youse have done a fantastic job on that.

A theory: “Oh!” was short for “Oh, look, we're home! We must have walked in a circle somehow, and since we never enter our settlement by climbing the cliff, I didn't recognize it until we were at the top.” The End.

Seems to me that this is somewhere they haven't been before. The way Megan called "Hello?" and the way they're being so hesitant around the entrance seems to imply this is unfamiliar territory. Also the fact that Megan went in to investigate while Cueball's loitering around the entrance.

maybe she said 'hello?' to see if their parents are home. the hesitation is because they've been out past their curfue :P

For the papal decree I predict that the owner of the shed will come from behind and kill them and the [heresy] OTC will end. [/heresy]
I would cry if that happened.

Edit: My first papacy!!!!! My decree is that everyone must give a present present to a random other person.

Spoiler:
Down by the sea was a lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Cuegan just building a lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Small trebuchet set off with a fast pull
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Down came the walls of the lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp chirp
Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp
Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp chirp
Chirpy chirpy chirp chirp chirp

Set off again toting their knapsacks full
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Said their goodbyes to the lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

How could they leave their grand Sandcastle?
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Cuegan judged it wasn't worth the hassle

Chirp, chirp, chirpy chirpy chirp chirp

Chirpy chirpy chirp chirp chirp

Seemed that the Sea would win the battle
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Eating away at the lone Sandcastle
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Then came a girl, her beret a-tassled
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Can LaPetite save our dear Sandcastle?

Seemed that the Sea would win the battle

Then came a girl, her beret a-tassled

Waiting are we, playing with the squirpy
Molpy molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two
Can't see the shore; we're stuck with the chirpy
Molpy molpy molpy, grapevine two

Chirpy chirpy...
Chirpy chirpy.. (chirpy chirpy)
Chirpy chirp chirpy (Chirpy chirp chirpy)
Chirpy chirpy.. (chirpy chirpy)

Chirpy can you go away? (chirpy chirpy go away)

Since it was me who came up with this, I may explain: ε denotes a random small number and is often used in mathematics when you're dealing with arguments. In theory, ε can be positive or negative, but almost always ε is chosen to be positive. So ε < 0 is something unusual and thereby funny for mathematicians.
I just noticed that it's difficult to explain a joke in a foreign language...

I like you, and I wonder where the people are. So that's two for two!

Seriously (as much as one can get with this story, anyhow), the emptiness is overshadowing the rising sea as the central mystery of Time. It was one thing to find abandoned campsites; they're temporary by definition. And the comments about seeing no one (or as Cuegan oddly put it, no one seeing them, as if they expected hidden lookouts to raise an alarm at their approach) don't mean much because they knew nothing about the normal state of the area they were passing through at the Time. But the abandoned vineyard and now homestead are more troubling.

Maybe everyone's merely out at the local hoedown but it doesn't seem that way. Part of that feeling comes from "meta" reasoning: the narrative form being explored here lends itself to exploration and sparse dialog between two protagonists; it would not work so well (in my opinion) for having lengthy dialogs with characters encountered along the way. In that respect, this reminds me of my favorite work of fiction of any length in any medium: Adam Cadre's short quasi-interactive fiction Photopia. (If anyone has not seen this, it it well worth the newpix or so of your time it takes to read/play through it. Free downloadable and online-playable versions of it are available a Google away.) Photopia justifies the uninhabited and abandoned worlds of typical text interactive fiction, originally a technical necessity because interaction with inanimate artifacts is so much easier to program than interaction with thinking speaking characters, in-story in an extraordinarily poignant way. I wonder if Randall is doing something similar here.

Lighter theories are still in play, though. My favorite is still that "time flew" while Megan and Cueball were having fun (building sandcastles), leaving them far in their future where the locale they're exploring is abandoned for any number of plausible non-apocalyptic (or apocalyptic) reasons. That makes the whole thing a taking-an-old-adage-literally joke, but with an elegant meta-joke (to a more normal extent, time is flying while we wait for it) that would make it worthwhile.

I still think that indications are that the people here prior left rather quickly, but still with enough time to grab important items, leaving behind unneeded things. These last few frames, and the revelation of contents in the shed, kind of give me a creepy feeling. :?

This is amusing because the programmers I work with often ride to work and after a lot of complaint finally got a proper bike storage room :D

Which color?

This could really annoy blitzers (and everyone else), so I'm going to refrain and go coma before things get out of hand. Results tomorrow, eeek!

One last edit:

I keep thinking this is about the thread not the comic, and want to point out that I'm still here. But it isn't, and I'm not.

To coma!

No need to know how to sew to join this group of needle workers. And come to think of it, no need to be a lady, either!

Besides, sewing doesn't make you a lady. It makes you sweaty, cross, foul-mouthed, covered in lint and little threads, and just a tad* insane about fabrics.

*For a certain definition of ‘just a tad.’

Back to the subject at hand: I think I prefer being a newpage or two behind - it's fun to have the instant interaction of being on the current newpage, but the waiting is excrutiating!!! Back to condimenting now (hmm, I think I'll have the tart cherry sauce, there's some left over and I do enjoy it do) so I can wait in agony again. :D

Edit: wrong word describing tad

As you look at the shelves that have been so feverishly abandoned, you begin to wonder: "Why? Why did they leave in such a hurry?"

A grue enters from a direction you did not expect. Grue eats you.

It should be bright green! Without question! And if anybody plans to paint a bike shed any other colour I personally will mount a passionate campaign that will obstruct construction of any bike shed unless it conforms to MY personal belief system regarding bike shed aesthetics. So there.

I predict that inside the shed they will find a perfect HO-scale model layout of the mountains, topped by a tiny shed, inside which they will find a perfect HO-scale model layout...

Again I have run out of Time this evening, but before I go coma I wish to point out two statistics from the forum indexes. The OTT now accounts for over 19% of all posts to the 1254 threads in the Individual XKCD Comic Threads forum. And the OTT is very close to exceeding one million views (999,302 at last check), less than three months after its creation.

Perhaps the view count is not that significant, since I'm sure each of us can account for several "views" per day as we move from home to work to mobile and back to home, but a million is still a very large number to a simple person like me.

Err, you have no constraint there that M is greater than N.
Why should I?

And my favorite new word: edgemolpy

I don't know why more people don't use vertical taskbars, especially in the age of widescreen

This is the sort of constructive criticism that is only really constructive for me
Great work though, and don't bother changing things just for me

My hamply molpster predicts that the shedq contains delicious crockeryw, which he is currently chewing at a ridiculously awkward angle through the shed window, because what he lacks in brain power he makes up for in acrobatics

q play log, with holes
wa stick of wood, formerly encased in tasty food

Well my desktop looks more like this, so having it huge in the corner makes more sense for me. I dunno. Maybe I'll make an alt version, just for you :P

And you're right, vertical taskbars are much better. I literally just changed mine back from being on the bottom for a while, and it doesn't flow as well in windows but gives you a lot better screen real estate.

That'll go perfect with cueball's scale-model castle! Each would have a different degree of recursion, but each contain the other. Their recursion patterns would sync up harmonically!
