It's half-okay, Kieryn's back. But charlie_grumbles will certainly be missed.
I realized perhaps he had been wanting to leave the OTT for other reasons, and the ong was simply a catalyst or an excuse. Either way, it's better that he announced it than everyone else who simply left without saying a word... (*cough* Helper *cough*)

I'm glad to see that, and Charlie was online here just a few minutes ago. I also think he wanted to leave the OTT anyways and the ong was just an excuse.

Had folks over for dinner last night and introduced them to Time on Geekwagon. And then it got to what I hadn't seen yet, and sweet sassy molassy with cherries on top! Sadly, it'll take me forever to catch up these almost 20 pages, but I can't wait to read and see who called what and when. I hope there will be lots of poetry celebrating Cue's heroism and Megan's return heroism.
Hmmm, maybe I'll try fry sauce this time.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I'm not dead1, I've just been very busy lately. Now I'm finally free of Outside duties. I actually stopped reading the OTT continuously on the newpage 532 (last post on np531) which means I would have to read 371 newpages if I decided to go blitzing. Which I'm not going to2. I've been still checking the OTC regularly and lurking in the OTT from Time to Time (I've also written several posts in the Other needle-pulled things3). I have read last 10 newpages or so because it was very dramatic both in the OTC and OTT.

So, I want to say you are all awesome and I'm glad I can now start posting again since I've made this announcement. :D

Now I have to coma, it's 1:54 AM here.

Lucky the Unlucky Leopard

Postby mscha » Sat Jun 22, 2013 12:49 am UTC

BlitzGirl wrote:Thanks, ggh!

Hey, I found out you can actually read part of Lucky's book on Google Books. Spoiler alert: Lucky is female.

I hacked into Google to find the rest of the story. Here it is:

Lucky the Leopard

Lucky the leopard is alone in the world. She doesn't have a mother, a father, or any sisters or brothers. Lucky is also very clumsy. Everything she does ends with a CRASH! BANG! BOOM! But she always lands on her feet, that's why her name is Lucky!

One day, Lucky decides to find a family. Will she have any luck?
Lucky is taking a walk on her favorite hill when she sees a boy and a girl. They look friendly! Maybe they can be her family? But she is a little bit shy, so she follows them at a distance.
After a while, the boy and girl finally arrive at the top of the hill. (That took them quite a long time! They are not such good climbers as Lucky is – at least on a good day when she's not so clumsy.) There's a hut there! The boy and girl take a look around the hut, and then start to play. They are making a sandcastle. Lucky really likes sandcastles!

Finally, Lucky finds the courage to go and meet the boy and girl. She runs towards them, and gives the boy a big hug!
But what happens now?? The girl is not so nice after all! She picks up a stick, and starts to hit Lucky! That is not nice! It really hurts!
Lucky quickly runs off, and starts licking her wounds.
Today is not the day that Lucky finds a new family. But tomorrow, there is a new day! Will she try again?

Edit: a few stylistic changes.

If there's a surprising amount of blood, I really hope Cueball finds those bandages in the next ONG (which should be in only a couple of minutes).

You need the direct link to the image "hash" for the particular frame. You can find this from msca's archive, or by viewing the image on xkcd (right click -> view image). For this one, it's http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/time/902e44 ... b4b45f.png (just make sure it isn't time.png, as that changes with the comic and becomes a spoiler in the thread)

Throw that in [img] tags, invent a word, and Bob's your uncle.

Well, none of your cats have probably ever had to ask for instructions on how to do something which will, no doubt, turn out to be blindingly simple. (I'm leery of posting a constantly-updating ONG like some of the ones I encountered whilst Blitzing, you see.)

Cueball could maybe use part of a piece of clothing... but we haven't been able to tell for sure whether or not they wear any. Maybe now we'll find out, e.g. "Here, tear a strip off this extra shirt" or "Use this spare loincloth from my pack."

Attention word-usage-tracking software: I don't think the word "loincloth" has been used before in this thread. Loincloth loincloth loincloth!

(Semi-ninjaed by Someguy. But not the loincloth part.* Loincloth loincloth loincloth!)

EDIT: (*Unless he edits to add a loincloth, but only a cad and a bounder would do such a thing.**)

(**Or maybe a cadbounder, or boundcadder.)

MORE EDIT: Attention word-usage-tracking software: I don't think the word "bounder" has been used before in this thread. Bounder bounder bounder!

I hacked into Google to find the rest of the story. Here it is:
Spoiler:
Lucky the Leopard

Lucky the leopard is alone in the world. She doesn't have a mother, a father, or any sisters or brothers. Lucky is also very clumsy. Everything she does ends with a CRASH! BANG! BOOM! But she always lands on her feet, that's why her name is Lucky!

One day, Lucky decides to find a family. Will she have any luck?
Lucky is taking a walk on her favorite hill when she sees a boy and a girl. They look friendly! Maybe they can be my family? But she is a little bit shy, so she follows them at a distance.
After a little while, the boy and girl finally arrive at the top of the hill. (That took them a while! They are not such good climbers as Lucky is – at least on a good day when she's not so clumsy.) There's a hut there! The boy and girl take a look around the hut, and then start to play. They are making a sandcastle. Lucky really likes sandcastles!

Finally, Lucky gathers the courage to go and meet the boy and girl.

Bravo! Next chapter: Lucky is taking a walk on her favorite beach when she sees a little girl in a beret...

Episode IV: A New Graph

Postby jjjdavidson » Sat Jun 22, 2013 1:27 am UTC

I was going to post this last night, and realized that no one would pay attention. (I wouldn't have.) Maybe tonight it'll have a chance.

In recent wips I have read a number of comments about how the OTT is slowing down. If it please the thread, let me here present another graph I've been toying with─it directly addresses that topic. This graph shows the rate of OTC newpix against the rate of OTT posts, with assorted markings and notations. (Spoilered for seaishness.)
Spoiler:

This page presents the graph in two forms: one with the bare line of OTT against OTT, and the other with assorted markings. (PNG versions for the IE8-limited.) Rate of posting is easier to make out on the bare one, but the markings provide some interesting additional information.

We can make a number of observations, some of them rather surprising. The main line plots OTT directly to OTC (yes, there are over 36,000 data points): the steeper the line, the more posts per newpix. In the first wip, of course, the post rate is very high.

On the sixth xip, when the newpix rate is halved, I expected to see the line steepen, since there was more Outside time for posting to each newpix. Instead, after a fewpix the post rate drops sharply. That seems to be the first point at which a significant number of Waiters decide, "Randall's jerking our chain," and begin to bail out. Notice, over the next wip, the density of red hash marks indicating where a Waiter posts for the last time, starting even before Time fails to end on April 1st.

Despite the flight of so many Waiters, the OTT stays fairly active, slowing down somewhat when Megan takes a nap, only to surge forward again at the appearance of La Petite. And when Megan says, "bye," we see a substantial surge in first-posters, right up through the Fade-out.

But when we join Megball in their explorations, interest begins to drop off again; there's another surge of last-posts over the next few xips. Not until the "Neat" tree and the early molpy activity does the decline stop, though some of the slowdown may have been due to school finals.

Since then, OTT activity has been fairly steady, aside from yesterday's surge after the raptorcat springs. The wiply wobble is quite visible, as posting slows down on the Outside wipend (just before the wip lines on the graph.) There's been a slight decline in recent weeks, but nothing I'm going to worry about just yet. After all, summer's started; the sunny Outside is bound to look attractive for a little while, until insanity sets back in....

P.S. Updated version of my earlier graph relating post count, span of time, and posting regularity. There are some noticeable changes; for instance, KarMann sadly dropped far down the chart. He posted recently for the first time in wips, increasing his posting span to nearly the entire span of Time, but shooting his regularity score all to heck. Sorry, KarMann! I'm glad you came back!

They're going to have to stay in that house for a while 'til she's recovered. I wonder if it has a roof? I was thinking that it looks a little like this one, but deroofed.

From the not-so-distant past (late 880s): Angelastic, beautiful ottification! CameronCat, very catchy. :) Kenmelken - "well, also pixels!" gave me a real giggle. Slinches had a great prediction and KarMann came back - yippee!

Regarding the present again: Wow jjjdavidson - fantabulous graph!

**Sigh...
I think it's finally happened, I've lost my will to go on, here :( The outside has not been kind to me and I've completely fallen so far behind I don't think I'll ever catch up again. And I just found this post, wedged at the bottom of NewPage 653.... Now seeing there are 250 pages ahead... Hope you guys are having fun, and thanks for the inclusion :) and here's to 250 more FuturePages!!
I'll probably be back... But not until things settle for me out here.

Don't give up completely, AK49BWL. I expect that the One True Comic and the One True Thread will keep going for a while yet. Ketchup as you have the chance, at your own pace, and don't stress out over being behind. Wait for it!

And again, Cueball's phrasing is strange. Not, "Keep pressure on the wounds," or, "Keep your hand tight over the scratches," or, "over the claw marks," but, "Keep your hand tight over where it's coming out." It's like he's already forgotten what she called the wounds just a few moments before.

I occasionally revisit the OTT to see how things are going, although I am spending almost all of my time in the Outside nowadaysnowaxips. To see those graphs as the most recent post was a nice surprise. Thank you jjjdavidson!

@jjjdavidson: Awesome graphs! These belong in the Book of Numbers1. Are they indexed on your site, or should I consider them each separate pages?
