 ImageThat is a really 4 idea, and if you want to fill in more of it, and if someone wants to supply updated plain text files of the OTT, I'd gladly supply an updated list of haiku.

ETA: Or I could just get a list of usernames from the thread see if the app I wrote yips ago (incidentally, to make a translation of Tom Lehrer's 'The Elements', which is to the same tune, although the translation wasn't) to fit a list of random words into a given line length and rhyme scheme still works.

EATA: Wait a minip! I'm pope! No wait; the papacy was disbanded. I'm a monarch! A monarch fluttermolpy! And I decree that some time either before the end of the dip or before the end of this NP (whichever comes last) you do something you often want to do but usually stop yourself from doing (e.g. eat so-called 'unhealthy' cake, apply for your dream job, etc.) Just obey Wheaton's Law and don't fall off any metaphorical wagons. You don't have to tell the thread what it was, but if you do, make your post somewhat relevant to non-decreeful things.

Just a question. Is it possible to use the angle of the sun descending to guess the possible time of year they are in right now?

I'm not sure if their latitude (north-south position on the globe) would effect this calculation much or not but I'd guess it would have some effect.
We may be able to guess at their approximate latitude based on flora and fauna etc.

Their would be two points in the year it could be either closer to spring or autumn etc as each sun angle will come twice a year.

Day is dONG, gone the sun, from the sea, from the hill, from the sky...
All is well, safely rest, Cuegan's nigh.

Is it just me, or is the sun moving awfully fast considering that Megball are now walking across the frame? I mean, if it took them, say, 5 seconds to walk about 5q, would the sun really move as much as it just did?

This makes sense to me. Also, I'd love to see more unintentional haiku, whether I use them in an ottification or not. :)

Maybe they're going reaaaaally slow because of Megan's leg, and also slow-motion-action-drama-scene.

Or maybe...that's no sun!

This is a bit out of date now and turned out to be too dark1 to accurately fit the sense of foreboding we had until Cuegan came back into the picture, but I figured I'd post it anyway.

Fade to Black
(based on the Metallica song by the same name)
Spoiler:
Time it seems, will fade away
Darkening further every day
Megball lost out of frame
Nothing left but mustard to blame
Writing the lyrics to this song
Anxiously awaiting the next ONG
Will there be more gray to see?
Blackness nearing so quickly

Things are not what they used to be
Darkness rising like the sea
All light lost, this can't be real
Can't stand this torment I feel
Dark shades filling the frame
'til the pixels are all the same
Growing darkness taking dawn
All that was bright, now is gone

Only Randall can save the day, but it's too late
Now I can't think, think why he should even try
White sky seems as though it never existed
Blackness greets me warm, now I will just say good-bye

1Almost as dark as the original, which is rather amazing considering that this song is about a webcomic rather than suicide. (Oh, and excuse the pun :) )

You know I think he is really just doing this because he read us complaining that we don't know why there is no night time when we know they have been walking for days. So he is now throwing in a token night time to keep us happy.

Actually, it makes almost too much sense for an OTT prediction. But I like it! Though I wonder, if they'll really walk during the night for the first time, how will they see where to step? And will we get new information about the setting of Time in time when they pull either a torch or a flashlight out of their bag? And will we see some nightmolpies? A baptor, perhaps?

As Earthling on Mars and others have noted, it doesn't make sense that the sun keeps setting in the same pace while Cuegan only walks a tiny bit (albeit more than we're used to between newpix). Also, the darkening continues in a much more rapid pace than you'd expect. (-14/-12!)

I think that, in theory, you'd be able to determine the date (or a set of two dates) if you know the latitude, or the latitude if you know the date. But you can't find both, since for every date, there's a latitude where the sun uses that angle on that date.

Phew, this was much harder than I thought because I couldn't figure out what part of the story to tell. I welcome improvements, I'm sure there are some out there in the OTTiverse.

Cuegan and the Sky with Mustard

Picture yourself building castles by oceans
With trebuchet flashes and sea level rise
Adventuring calls you, you answer quite slowly
And then bid your castle goodbye

So many layers of ladders and flags
Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the fancy beret
And she's gone

Cuegan and the Sky with Mustard
Megball and the Sky with Mustard
Cuegan and the Sky with Mustard

Follow them up to a shed by a mountain
Where silhouette kitties chomp stick figure thighs
Everyone gasps as she jumps cross the Grand Strid
That flows so much deeper than wide

Harmlessly squirpy appears in the cold
But just as quick it runs away
Fading to black with the sun in the clouds
While they're gone

Cuegan and the Sky with Mustard
Megball and the Sky with Mustard
Cuegan and the Sky with Mustard

Picture them finding some help on the mountain
From semencancerbabies or giraffmolpy rhyme!

Cue's really showing a lot of thought and concern here.

Is this the first time they've mentioned Time?
Also, I'm surprised that they think they will be better off at home given how little use they make of resources.
And, yes, Et Den, I'm prolly talking to myself again and again and again.
Folks tend to abbreviate me as ED. (Even a few have done it IRL, which is silly really.)

Version 22, released today, “fixed” a “bug” that didn't need fixing. Now, if you refresh on a page with a URL with a ‘fragment’ (like <http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=101043&p=3390855#p3390855>) it will not scroll the page to the position of the fragment anymore.
Result on the OTT: I've formed a habit to click on a post subject before hitting refresh, so that the post in question would remain visible. What happens now is, the position doesn't change, then all open spoilers close, you're suddenly looking at a post much further on the page, and you might miss all posts in between.

Eternal Density wrote:I'm glad I use Chrome because I rely on that behaviour. How can they call that a bug?

Obligatory link to http://xkcd.com/1172/. But, I also use this, because otherwise spoilers mess up my position. So in this case it does seem like it should at least be a toggle in about:config now.
[/spoiler]
I've found a partial workaround. If you do a refresh, and find yourself on a different part of the page you expect, click on the location bar and press Enter (or easier: Ctrl-L, Enter), and it'll put you at the right ‘fragment’ on the page again. (If you don't notice that you're further down on the page, you'll still miss messages, though.)
I guessed that might be a workable solution, though I couldn't test it myself since I don't have firefox installed.

[edit] sorry I didn't notice the extra spoiler tag while I was ketchupping

Well the only sensible conclusion is that they live in a world where their planet rotates faster than ours. We may even be able to find the approximate length of their day based on the speed of movement of the sun and the average walking pace and aprox distance they just walked. Their day may only take a few of our outside hours. This is kind of ironic as we are seeing their time flow at a very slow rate with one frame update an outside hour but for them time is flying by.

Latent22 wrote:Just a question.

I think that, in theory, you'd be able to determine the date (or a set of two dates) if you know the latitude, or the latitude if you know the date. But you can't find both, since for every date, there's a latitude where the sun uses that angle on that date.

While we don't know what date it is, we can kind of guess... they are somewhere between the dead of "winter" at 16°N and the middle of summer at 63.5°N. If they are in Africa, 37°N is the max, so summer (and spring) is eliminated.

That actually makes perfect sense.
