snore...mumble mumble zombies...mumble raptors mumble... snore... zombies raptors zombies...snore SNORT *jerks awake* Wha...where am I? Oh, in the OTT. Whew. I was having a nightmare about work, which has consumed me lately. (Well, not literally, you know...). Recently, I've read about 8 pages, and all y'all have written about 40. So, time to use the ol' time portal here to jump ahead, and make a note to go back and read all those pages...sometime.

Off to aubronwood to catch up. Let's see, Megan's OK, mostly, that's good. Aw, that exchange about the flag was so sweet! Ewww, except for the coloring in red part. Ooh, people in the mountains, like people in the hills! And now they're walking, and Cueball is being so thoughtful. Cool terrain here. Hmm, worrying about that "thing," and others, being "out there." That's creepy. And they don't know it's some kind of cat? Weird. And Megan's not feeling great, and OHMYRANDALL IT'S GETTING DARK! AND THE SUN IS SETTING!! TIME IS ENDING AHHHHH!! Ok, maybe not yet.

Interesting, I went to see Fiddler on the Roof last weekend, and was going to post a version of "Sunrise, Sunset," commenting on how we never see either of those. It would have been weirdly prophetic, or something.

Well, I still don't have much time to spend here, but I was missing you all in the past, so I'll just hang out with you in the present 'till I can do some blitzing.

I am at the moment doing some raptor observation. No relocation necessary at this point. If you want to check it out, it's the osprey cam. It's watching an osprey nest with two rather large baby osprey. So cute! Except at the moment the mom is ripping a fish into chunks, which isn't that cute except she's feeding it to the babies.

Not necessarily. They don't say that they haven't slept before, just that they need to do it now. And right they are, after a long day of climbing and being attacked.

Whee, thanks everyone. That cake looks delicious, but I couldn't possibly eat it - it's sort of like if a human made a cake shaped like a baby and then sliced the head open.

Oh, that already happened you say? Never mind then, time to chow :D

Maybe this will turn out to be like Minecraft, and they can make the night end early by sleeping. Maybe that's why we haven't seen it get dark before now.

True, but the fact that we haven't seen a sunset before or heard any mention of needing to sleep before seems to add up to something. Probably that Randall is messing with us.

Ok I've just solved it!!!!

Spoiler:
They live in a world with more than one sun! This is why they have walked for so many days and had no sunset. Until this night when they have hit a night with all the other extra sun's below the horizon and then the final visible one setting allowing it to finally go dark. All the previous sunsets were hidden by the extra suns in the sky.

Also this also solves the big running question of why the sea is acting strange and rising far beyond normal. It is just because of the solar alignment that happens to be pulling the sea up more than normal!

It reminds me of a short story (by someone, I don't remember who), in which this event (a darkness in a multi-star system) occurred, regularly, but with enough spacing that it threw the whole world in to chaos. Let's hope we don't find hoards of villagers chasing astronomers down the mountain in the next few newpix.

The short story could be Nightfall, by Isaac Asimov.

Asimov: Nightfall. Awesome short story - the best he has ever written (and also the first he published). Later made into a full length novel ("The Fall of Night"), which was good.

Ninja'd by Ximenez - good going!

Oh my, such a nice time to (finally) have joined the OTT! The Attack, the Blackening, the Predictions!

Unfortunately, I've spent so much of my precious work time just kee(tchu)ping up with the OTT, I have no predictions of my own to contribute with. I'll just settle with appreciating y'all's. And kenmelken's wiki entries, of course.

Carry on.

Darkened by -8/-6 this time.

This'll be my last update for a while, since I'm gonna follow Cuegan's example.

Asimov: Nightfall. Awesome short story - the best he has ever written (and also the first he published). Later made into a full length novel ("The Fall of Night"), which was good.

Ninja'd by Ximenez - good going!

Yes... that does seem to ring a bell. Thanks!

How many gaps could there be? What have we not seen? We know now that they slept at night. Perhaps now, we shall know the night, for now we have reason to be afraid for Cuegan. *turns on ominous atmospheric music*

So, in about 10 np, the sun will touch the horizon, and 2 np later, it will be all the way below it.

My prediction (usually wrong) is that not much will happen before then.

ETA: ninja'd by rule110, but a different prediction. Time will tell which one of us is right less wrong.

Quick update. Now, as of np2374, the sun is exactly where I said it would be ... as of np2373.
So my revised estimate is that at np2378 or np2379, the sun will start setting, and at np2380 or np2381, it will be behind the horizon.
(And yes, my prediction was very wrong ... as usual.)

I'm pretty sure they slept, probably overnight:
  1. When Megan was sleeping at the beach, on the sandcastle. (Around frame 259.)
  2. By the river³. (around frame 1130.)
  3. Under the tree⁴. (around frame 1350.)
And who knows what happened during the first fade...

Why didn't they sleep in the house next to the attack if it was about to get dark?

And are we now going to see them try to sleep while we frantically molpy hunt in the darkness trying to keep them safe?

Well, we can in fact not unambiguously say that they have been sleeping since the beginning of Time. The "sleeping wherever they were" could refer to before we started following them. Probably not, but still.

This. I hope stars help. Also, it would be neat to try and find known constellations. Maybe we'll find out whether this is Earth or not.

So, you can have two situations with a binary star system: the stars are close together and the planet goes around both (i.e. Tatooine), or the stars are well separated and the planet goes around just one (i.e. Brian Aldiss's Helliconia, but maybe not such a big difference in climate). In the first case (called circumbinary) the stars don't get far enough apart for there to be an appreciable difference in set times, which doesn't follow with Latent's hypothesis. Tides in this case would not vary much as the major pull is always in the same direction. With a well separated binary, you'd end up with half the year where the two stars were in opposite sides of the sky. The near star would create daytime, and the other star would create something like a dimday. In the other half of the year, the two stars would be on the same side of the sky, and this would separate the rotation period into a bright day and true night. The tides would vary quite a bit between when the two stars and planet are lined up and when they aren't.

I saw a similar story once in a comic for children. The civilization had n suns, so they only ran out of light once every millennium, and... well, their civilization never survived it.
Hm. Seems to be an adaptation of Nightfall. And a good question for a What-If.
