Yes, it seems to me too, but there are definitely no frames in between in my cache. Maybe it has somehow skipped those image on the OTC website. Can anyone who is able to do so, who had the tab with OTC opened check his own cache?

charlie_grumbles wrote:Does anyone's cache show timestamps. How quickly did they come?

I had to find the original files (not using opera:cache web UI) to see those timestamps. I'm not sure the time is correct but the intervals could be (it's in my local time, UTC+1 DST):
21:23:58
21:24:18
21:24:28
21:24:47
The last one is there in multiple copies, first with timestamp 21:37:31 which is almost certainly incorrect.
If the intervals are correct, there is only 10 second gap between those two mentioned above, while there is 20 second gap between others, so it doesn't seem plausible there should be more between them. But it could be totally wrong.
Edit: the standard np2440 has timestamp 21:00:14 which seems ok, so maybe it is all true after all.

Newpixbot checks at :00, at :01 and :05 if it hasn't gotten anything, and then at :15, :25, ... :55. So it would almost certainly have gotten any such earlier event, or at least the last frame of it. Rule110 wrote:After sixty-odd newpix of starry starry nighttime in the OTC, I have to assume that the thought of OTTifying the song "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" by Don McLean has occurred to just about every Waiter who's ever heard the song.

And yet, as richly poetic as it is (it should probably appear in the dictionary next to the word "poignant"), the song doesn't lend itself to lighthearted filking. I assume that's the reason others have shied away.

So, forget lighthearted. This is about Randall watching me watching Cueball watching Megan, with stars and deep time enfolding all.

Celestial Sphere (Starry Starry Night)

Starry, starry night
Tumbling in a crystal sky
Ghostly river drifting by
As constellations wheel into the west
Watching Megan rest
Wondering where their path will lead
Fretting on tomorrow's need
To find a friend beyond this empty land

Now I understand
Why you turn from every star
The mystery's not the sea, it's who you are
So tell me why you walked so far
You cannot see me, my Time's in your past
I wonder, did it last?

Starry, starry night
Black of night on mountains green
Predators a-prowl unseen
And only sticks and stones to keep you whole
Asking in your soul
How far will you need you go
To learn what you already know
To touch the future, simply touch her hand

Now I understand
Why you turn from every star
The mystery's not the sky, it's who you are
So tell me why you walked so far
You cannot see me, my Time's in your past
I wonder, did it last?

For I've waited for you
Thinking your quest was true
Then while the sun was out of sight on that starry starry night
We saw the truth, as Waiters sometimes do
But I could have told you, Randall
Our Time was never meant for us to wait until it's through

Starry, starry night
Watch the restless planets set
Trailing veils of faint regret
For castles left behind upon the beach
Reasons out of reach
Farther than the stars above
All that we can grasp is love
To light the night behind us as we go

Now I think I know
Why you turn from every star
The mystery's not the world, it's who you are
So tell me why you walked so far
And you can see me, though I don't know how
Perhaps there's only... now?

Hey guys, did you notice the javascript !?
I mean, actually, if it was possible to see the meteor live (which I didn't, sadly), then the javascript was able to retrieve these frames without overloading the server. Shouldn't it be possible to execute the same code for newpixbot?
Or a "the-end-justifies-the-means" option: someone opens the page on a dedicated computer, running in parallel a screen recording software, pipelined to something splitting videos into consecutive [different] frames.
Waiting for it: Map of Time, same, no JS, Ages of Time.
Beginning a new story with every choice, no matter how small: Goodies.

Hmm, that's three people who got those five frames, I believe, and no reports of other frames.
We'll never know for sure, but that's a good indication that we got 'em all. Image

Here's an updated animation of the entire night scene (twerked with gamma 3), with manually twerked timings for the meteor:

7 - That animation really emphasizes the meteor as a "blink and you'll miss it" moment.

Hopefully we did get all of the frames; five seems logical to me. Now having the OTC tab pinned doesn't seem quite as crazy as it once did.

It could, potentially, but I'm not gonna write it. Image
This was most likely a one-time event. And at least newpixbot caught it, so that y'all otters could go and check their cache, so that we could complete the list. In other words, the system works. Image
(If there are more frames than these five, an enhanced newpixbot wouldn't have caught them either, since it'd be doing the exact same thing.)

It doesn't really check every so often, but it opens an HTTP connection to a “streaming” script, that pushes an update once in a while.

ETA: just realized that Cueball is a really slow walker: it took him over half an hourI to walk to the right end of the frame, pick up some meowlpy ammo, and walk back. (7 frames in which the stars kept moving about 5 minutesI per frame.)

(Based on the theme song from Winnie the Pooh)

Deep in the One True Comic land
Where waiting for it, we've stayed
You'll find great adventures are at hand
That our Great Lord Randall has made...

A molpy named Prickly is his friend
And Lucky, and Beesnakes too
There's Squirpy, and Chirpy, and there's Snake
But most of all, Megan and Cue!

Megan and Cue, Megan and Cue
Castle-building duo who don't know much
They're Megan and Cue, Megan and Cue
Awesomeful adventuring pair!

Can someone please OTTify The Church - Under The Milky Way

(I'm not a talented OTTificator)

It could, potentially, but I'm not gonna write it. Image
This was most likely a one-time event. And at least newpixbot caught it, so that y'all otters could go and check their cache, so that we could complete the list. In other words, the system works. Image
(If there are more frames than these five, an enhanced newpixbot wouldn't have caught them either, since it'd be doing the exact same thing.)

I was about to say the same thing. :) How often does the JavaScript check for updates now?

It doesn't really check every so often, but it opens an HTTP connection to a “streaming” script, that pushes an update once in a while.

I have now actually written a little script that does this Javascript-style streaming thing. For now it just logs the hashes it gets, but if this proves stable, then I might ask newpixbot politely to start using this.

Schizoblitzing

Postby Flado » Sat Jun 29, 2013 11:24 pm UTC

Hello, futurefolk!

In my travels through your past selves (charlie_grumbles, I'm looking at your blackness: I don't know why you've donned it, but it totally ruins your past posts; I might even start glaring with intent later), I've come to the discussion of Schizoblitzing, and I kind of like the idea of doing it. But:
a) I've been made contradictory§ BlitzGirl the Next on the promise that I will be blitzing properly, and
b) It is sometimes fun to "drop a bomb in the future слонобикозъбесто награбадабърче" and look at the explosion a mip later (reminds me vaguely of CMB)
So I face a dilemma: to schizoblitz, or to remain strictly orthodoxж?
I'll do a bit of postcomatical schizoblitzing just to see if you futuredwellers offer any useful advice in this matter. If someone has a strong opinion that I should not peek, please PM it within the next eight newpix or forever hold your piece(

For Cueball in his night vigil.

Based on Viva la Vida by Coldplay. Lyrics

Viva la Vida

Spoiler:
I used to travel Time
Seas did rise and I saw the tide
Now in the nix I sit alone
Watching skies all on my own

We used to build so free
Didn't know about the sea
Listen as the ocean cried,
"Now look out and see, the rising tide!"

One minute I held the rope
Then nearly lost all shred of hope
Because we realized our castle stood
Upon the rising sea and platforms of wood

I see the sea and I see it rising
River small, ocean big, blood surprising
Be my faith and my strength, I need you
Can't lose faith in us, carry me through

For some reason I can't explain
Once we left it was never
    Never ever so sublime
And that was when I traveled Time
It was the wicked and wild attack
We wondered should we just turn back
Nearly shattered us, but still we knew
We would just have to find our way back through

Another maybe lies in wait
For our heads on a silver plate
Just another sad and lonely night
Just us and the rising tide

I see the sea and I see it rising
River small, ocean big, blood surprising
Be my faith and my strength, I need you
Can't lose faith in us, carry me through

For some reason I can't explain
I know you won't ever call my name
    Never so sublime
But that was when I traveled Time

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

I see the sea and I see it rising
River small, ocean big, blood surprising
Be my faith and my strength, I need you
Can't lose faith in us, carry me through

For some reason I can't explain
I know you won't ever call my name
    But it's so sublime
But that was when I traveled Time

Every time I think I'm ketching up, some new weirdness erupts. At least we can be reasonably sure now that Randall is aware of what goes on here.

Rule110 wrote:After sixty-odd newpix of starry starry nighttime in the OTC, I have to assume that the thought of OTTifying the song "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" by Don McLean has occurred to just about every Waiter who's ever heard the song.
Spoiler:
And yet, as richly poetic as it is (it should probably appear in the dictionary next to the word "poignant"), the song doesn't lend itself to lighthearted filking. I assume that's the reason others have shied away.

So, forget lighthearted. This is about Randall watching me watching Cueball watching Megan, with stars and deep time enfolding all.

Celestial Sphere (Starry Starry Night)

Starry, starry night
Tumbling in a crystal sky
Ghostly river drifting by
As constellations wheel into the west
Watching Megan rest
Wondering where their path will lead
Fretting on tomorrow's need
To find a friend beyond this empty land

Now I understand
Why you turn from every star
The mystery's not the sea, it's who you are
So tell me why you walked so far
You cannot see me, my Time's in your past
I wonder, did it last?

Starry, starry night
Black of night on mountains green
Predators a-prowl unseen
And only sticks and stones to keep you whole
Asking in your soul
How far will you need you go
To learn what you already know
To touch the future, simply touch her hand

Now I understand
Why you turn from every star
The mystery's not the sky, it's who you are
So tell me why you walked so far
You cannot see me, my Time's in your past
I wonder, did it last?

For I've waited for you
Thinking your quest was true
Then while the sun was out of sight on that starry starry night
We saw the truth, as Waiters sometimes do
But I could have told you, Randall
Our Time was never meant for us to wait until it's through

Starry, starry night
Watch the restless planets set
Trailing veils of faint regret
For castles left behind upon the beach
Reasons out of reach
Farther than the stars above
All that we can grasp is love
To light the night behind us as we go

Now I think I know
Why you turn from every star
The mystery's not the world, it's who you are
So tell me why you walked so far
And you can see me, though I don't know how
Perhaps there's only... now?

I am amazed, in retrospect, that the song has not crossed my mind at all over the last three days. I haven't actually heard the song in years, but I hardly need to; I can still sing practically the entire album from memory (and often try). This is absolutely lovely. I had to stop in the middle of typing my reply to read through it again (and once again it left my eyes moist). Thank you.

P.S. Did you mean to write, "How far will you need to go"?
────────────────
I've checked my Firefox cache for meteor impacts, and I got exactly the same 4 intermediate frames everyone else has reported. I think we probably know them all. (I can't report times, though; all my times had already been updated by seeing the frames posted on the OTT.)

I checked every other frame listed in the cache against my captures, and they were all there. But I can't see a way to automate the process; I hate the FF cache system. I've actually opened Time in an IE10 :x window, just because IE's cache is more accessible.

This really wreaks havoc with our frame numbering (and any animations I'm doing)...
For frame numbering, I think I'll number those 2440a, 2440b, 2440c, 2440d, 2440e.

FYI, my script which sucks down the JavaScript data feed seems to have gotten all the images I've seen listed so far, and no more. So, we likely have all there are. The intervals between those 5 frames seem to have been 20s, 10s, 20s, 11s, but that could have been skewed by the way the server sorts which streams to send the data to first.

In general, I think mscha's NewPixBot is better than my script, but in this particular case, it does look like my script was much better. Obviously, the best thing of all is to keep them both running, and between the two of us (and Aubronwood & Geekwagon) we should be able to catch just about anything Great Lord Randall throws at us.*

* No, GLR, that wasn't a challenge! Please, no!

Added: And dagnabbit, not a comet!!
P.S. I am Randall, but not that Randall.
We can rebuild it. We have the technology. We can make it better than it was. Better … stronger … well, maybe not faster.
Well, BlitzGirl is experiencing a bit of a title wave.
