He's thinking, or we need Megan's smarts to figure it out.

And it does seem to be a good match for "water" especially because that 2-ish figure was a single character word earlier. It's almost too good a match in that sense.

Pope? first time. So, umm, keep working on the beanlang? Yeah, that.

I like Beanish for the language, but anyone can call it whatever they want. :) We'll still be able to understand each other.

I hope Megan shows up soon. Image

My prediction for the OTC: Beanie teaches Cueball the word for whatever that is. Then, Megan gets up. Cueball says something to her to the effect of "I've been learning their language; ImageImageImageImage means water."

While "outside" doing yardwork, I remembered a scene from a movie version (variation?) of "Robinson Crusoe" where Crusoe was trying to teach 'Friday'A English.
They were sitting around a fire and Crusoe pointed at it and said "Fire." 'Friday' responded with his <word> for fire. Crusoe repeated, "fire." 'Friday' repeated "<word>." This went back and forth a few more times and finally Crusoe said 'Friday's' "<word>" and with a big grin 'Friday' then said "Fire."
I know this doesn't help to translate anything, but it is close to Troi's example of "cup", "water", or "drink" that several of us have pointed out.

AI can't remember if this version used 'that' name.

If I use the carrier and cree syllabics to decipher the word and assuming the last letter is the 'n' with laminal/apical s added and rotated differently I get the word sejon.

Here is the definition

sejon

the stereotypical asian fags who can't speak properly and like to throw together random words to make sentences. also commonly seen to be listening to gay bands like Bullet for My Valentine and bagging out awesome bands such as Muse. esl.
sejon - "It the dude no u! what? yah dude!"

kyle - "what did he say?"

I'm under the impression that the last symbol in the assumed "water" word is punctuation. It has 1 line above the squiggle when Beanie-1 says it the first time and when Cueball says it, but the second time Beanie-1 says it (assuming he's surprised or excited) there are 2 or 3 lines above the squiggle.

Edit: I took too long to process thoughts to words and was Ninja'd by the LightningFemale.

Exclamation seems likely, indeed.
And my transcription is probably wrong, Cueball's "pronunciation" looks pretty good, actually. So more like:

Agreed, that seems more likely. Which means the top word in this frame is probably affirmative, like "yeah, water!".

I think the first word Ali/Moe/Beanie-1 said is "Yes" and followed with an emphatic version of the word. (Cueball does say the word extremely close to the original.)
Conversation so far (maybe):
Ali: "Cup"
pause frame
Cueball: "Cup"
Ali: "Yes. Cup!"

Edit

Cueball must have a good ear. I figured he'd speak a couple of ragged looking words while trying to get the pronunciation down.

Cueball seems to be pronouncing the new word interrogatively, with the little circle...

"hogba"
(pause)
"hogba?"
"Si, hogba!!" (extra line on last character emphasizes, maybe?)

ETA: the problem is, he could be saying something else...
"hogba" (water)
(pause)
"hogbu?" (something really disgusting)
"NO!! hogba"

Blind-posting from np 1046 to say that I don't think I'll ever catch up, because the linguistic investigations are fascinating.

And surely someone else has already suggested this, but wouldn't it be neat if one of the beanie bunch have greeted Cuegan with "wait for it"?

"hogba?"
"Si, hogba!!" (extra line on last character emphasizes, maybe?)
Wouldn't Cueball put a question mark in as an interrogative because he speaks English or whatever it is?

100 OTTers agreeing that it's emphasis. I like it. And now we're getting somewhere! Good job, Cueball.

I think the little circle is just him mushing the word a bit (closing the curly tail more than it should). The punctuation still seems to be the single line, which is most likely a period.

I wonder if the Beanies will start talking in "english" if megan and Cueball learn to understand them, or are we just going to have to translate everything forever?

I disagree that it's emphasis. The utterance that Cueball spoke, was identical to the Beanie's. There was no mispronunciation. The double squiggly Beanie added changed the sound and added meaning.

Tough call...

Do Spanish speakers put upside down question marks before their questions in English?

Or the other way around?

Part of the word looks like 二 (Japanese 'ni', meaning 'two') so I think what xe was actually saying was either 'shrubbery' or 'chupacabra' or, what we've all been waiting for: 'it'. Hopefully xe wasn't saying 'semen'.

I don't know the O. Henry story except through a Jonathan Coulton song, so the comb thing just made me think of The Hairbrush Song again.

Having trouble believing that the last symbol is punctuation. Why would punctuation be translated in a spoken conversation? GLR should just give us the exclamation point in that case.

They do if they're speaking English with a Spanish speaking accent. When I was learning Spanish, I frequently forgot to put the upside down question mark on sentences, and I'm sure my interrogative pronunciation had a heavy American accent as well.

And look at all those OTTers treating Cueball with just a little more resect! I knew he was smarted than all those folk have been saying.
