Based on "Crosseyed and Painless" by Talking Heads

Lost some blood – Trying to act casual
Can't stop – They're nowhere near a hospital
Walking uphill – See a tower up ahead
Who's that? – People wearing their beanie hats

Tangled in Time / On a slow odyssey
Waiting all night / And that is our policy

They're ready to climb – Continue their experiment
Time lost – Finding more world, maybe different
Nothing said – No dialog of any kind
Going along – Cannot read stranger signs

We're waiting in Time / It's running before our eyes
Lifting our heads / Looking within for signs

Time is money and time will tell
Time asks for whom to toll the bell

ETA: my favourite Time period? I don't know if I have one. I could say “the current one” at any Time, but that's a cliche, and not really true. (For instance, right now is kinda [heresy]boring[/heresy], apart from a molpy or two.)
But if I have to pick one, it's going to be the aftermath of Lucky's attack, where you can see Cueball and Megan growing closer together.

That was great! I didn't even have to know the tune to enjoy reading your ottification.

For the mome: like mscha, I have a hard time naming my favourite period. If I have to pick though, I think I'd go with the shoreline era. That first half black newpix after the fade was when we knew for sure we were in for a long ride. There were a lot of uneventful frames in that period, but that's what the first part of not ending looks like.

Favourite period - I might have to say the fading. It got us all excited and wondering what would happen, and was the first time we got anything different from the black and white sandcastle scenes we'd gotten so used to - but mainly because it was the period which encouraged me to delurk!

Just searched the thread and, seriously, no-one mentioned Pink Floyd - Time? (Yes, TDSotM has been mentioned, but not Time itself.)
And no-one OTTified it yet? Though, it actually doesn't need much modification, but still... :)

So I went and signed up for Steam, bought Portal, downloaded it (which took quite a long time!) and found that it wouldn't run...complaining about a missing OpenGL extension (I'm on Linux). I tried following help threads and installing the suggested packages, and now Steam itself won't run anymore, so I guess I kind of mustarded it up. I'll have to try on Mac instead tomorrow. But, in the meantime, I found a Flash Portal game which is quite fun (and challenging - it took me several hours to finish all the levels): http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/portal.php

Thanks BlitzGirl, mscha, ucim, and marchlight!

Also well spotted, especially by BlitzGirl. I thought it might stay hidden for a few newpix, maybe even over[outside]night[/outside], being not only concealed (deliberately) in a predictable-looking spoiler, but also (accidently) in a GOAT post right after an ONG. Man, you folks are thorough.

Favorite period -- the deep night, 50 newpix or so after the stars came out. For some reason, it stirred up some very real and surprising emotions in me (that came out later in my Starry Night filk).

I see1 what you did with your avatar, TimeLurker. Neat!

I agree with Marchlight; my favorite period was the shoreline era immediately after the fade. The relief that Time wasn't over, the anticipation for where Cuegan's journey would take them, and the realization that my Outside lifeH would be compromised for many newpix to come.

Portal: The Flash Version is excellent...it's what got me hooked on Portal in the first place! (By the way, once you get portal installed, check out the map pack they made based on their flash game. It's the same levels but made in the actual game, with some bonus stuff too!) But do play Portal, it's very much worth your time.

Portal 2 isn't out on linux yet but it launched on mac, so if you finish portal, and it's on sale, I'd highly recommend picking that up as well.

Uh oh, I sound like an ad for Portal now. Umm...wait for it?

One of my favorite recent Times has to have been the Bucket Period. Because it actually answered a question, and let us all know that we are still on a Quest with Cuegan to discover why the Sea1 is rising.

I personally liked the part where Cueball was learning beanish - it felt like we were making progress and the same time he was, and even though I wasn't doing anything I felt really involved.

And then of course the drawing bit came along which was less interesting but they were actually communicating :P

It's a rich world Cuegan are exploring. So far removed now from the beach, and the barren shorelines.

Chapter 17

It was a long night. Somehow in the rush to battle, everyone had overlooked the fact that keyboards have excellent night vision, and the Timewaiters couldn't see worth a chirp. This didn't stop the Knights Temporal from singing and dancing, but when it came to actual fighting, putting themselves at risk, and doing things, BlitzGirl had to face the consequences of the founding rules of the Knights Temporal - they had all accepted the position on condition that there be no duties whatsoever. So, after singing their song, most of them retired to what was left of the molpyberry table and enjoyed a pint or three. The only one who didn't join in was tman2nd, whose oath to defend all cats was put sorely to the test by BlitzGirl's battle cry. Why would BlitzGirl, keeper of all her molpies, want to harm innocent cats? He was going to have to speak to her about that.

Tomorrow.

Spoiler:
Tonight he just wanted to be alone, so he walked some distance away from the camp and sat down to contemplate the stars going by overhead. He could hear the sounds of screeching molpies, and also the sounds of the singing Knights, but soon could not tell the difference between them. It was rather haunting, hearing the sounds of cat and molpy battles he couldn't see, and watching the stars slowly pass overhead that he couldn't hear.

He had just come back from a Holy BlitzQuest, and the memories of past sections of Time started flooding back, from the peaceful early days at the beach, and the awesome sights he had seen higher up in the hills. He looked up. The sky truly was beautiful. He could sit up all night and just watch it go by. But nature exacts a price for all of its beauty; even the rising seas had surely destroyed much of the peaceful beach he had remembered. He wondered whether there would be a price to pay tonight, and how it would be collected.

The sounds slowly died down as the night progressed, leaving only a gentle breeze to caress him as he lay down in the gently sloping grass, when he heard something.

Something was approaching. Something large. He instinctively popped up and looked around. His eyes were by now well accustomed to the darkness, and he easily spotted the approaching Timewaiter, even recognizing him as Neil_Boekend. Neil called out, "tman? tman2nd?"

Relieved that it wasn't a large molpy, he called back, "Yes... it's me. Just thinking about stuff... enjoying a moment of peace... you know, waiting for it."

"Mind if I wait with you?" he replied. "All that battle stuff is kind of scary." It seemed to tman2nd that the battle was over, one way or another, but he didn't mind the company. Neil said, "If you listen closely, when it's real quiet, sometimes you can hear the stars chirp." This was news to tman2nd, so they wordlessly sat down together, and listened as the stars slowly passed overhead.

It wasn't long before they heard something, but it wasn't a chirp. Someone else was approaching, but neither of them could make out who, or from where. They also didn't want to spoil the mood by calling out, so they just strained their ears trying to figure out who, or what it was, and from where. There was a quick rushing sound from the left and searing pain in tman2nd's side as something clawed at him. He screamed, but didn't even hear himself. Something hit him on the leg as he fell down, and there was something on top of him when he heard Neil scream. Whatever was on top of him moved off, and he picked himself up to see Neil thwapping a keyboard while the keyboard gnawed at his leg. If something was going to die tonight, it wasn't going to be him, or Neil. With determination, tman2nd jumped on the keyboard, grabbed its ears, and pulled back with all his might. This was enough for the keyboard to drop its attack on Neil_Boekend, who staggered up to hit the keyboard again with his stick. The keyboard had thrown tman2nd clear, had turned around, and was about to pounce on him when Neil's stick hit its mark. That was enough to draw the attack back to him.

The keyboard lunged back at Neil, ripping into his stomach with ease. The scream was blood-curdling, and could be heard throughout the entire campsite. The last thing he felt was the keyboard's sharp claws against his face as the rowrmolpy held him down and began to dine on his innards.

It was over.

Defender of cats. He was sworn to be a defender of cats, yet here, his instincts had taken over as he defended Neil, who was in turn defending him against the very cats he was sworn to defend. But that cat had attacked... how should it have gone? These contradictory thoughts rolled around in his head as a crowd of timewaiters came running from the campsite.

The sun had begun to light up the eastern sky, and as he contemplated what had just happened, enlightenment dawned.

He just wasn't sure he wanted to become enlightened.

For the Momal decree:

It's hard to pick a favorite time period, as the OTT and the OTC are so interwoven. I think I would rate meeting the Beanies high up there, as it opens up the world in a new way. The story changed at that point from one of simple exploration and picked up another dimension. For me, all that went before was preface. The story is beginning now.

I also liked the long night for its awesome beauty.

You mean they're not the same? IS there such a thing as a "neutral" accent? I can't possibly imagine how any accent could sound neutral to EVERYONE...

A friend of mine does a lot of voice acting and she has a few neutral accents that she does; mid Atlantic, mid Pacific and the one she calls neutral is somewhere between SoCal, E. Australian, NZ, S. African and various southern British variants... So no, I don't think neutral and "mine" are quite the same thing.

But since Neil has already been dead for a long time and is still posting, I think we can safely say he's going to be alright. Image

Okay... I can't imagine what any of those would sound like, but I'll take your word for it.

But now we've apparently been shown the castle already destroyed, its site under a couple of fathoms of water. Since I don't believe Randall will stoop to cheap Dan Brown narrative trickery, then whatever la Petite was going to do, she's already done it and gone, fled to higher ground.

So at some point in the future, is Time going to back up and show us the events between the first fadeout and that lonely floating bucket? Or will it grind relentlessly forward, leaving us unsatisfied about la Petite's mysterious burden?

Or, here's a scary thought for those with no time left for anything, will Grandall start another comic on the same principle as the OTC but staring Lapetite

But, in the meantime, I found a Flash Portal game which is quite fun (and challenging - it took me several hours to finish all the levels): http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/portal.php

Yes, here's one of the manipulations from earlier in the thread, by MattTheTubaGuy:

There were many different user-made images that pointed out the constellations - if you'd like to know more, there was a huge astronomy discussion upthread about 75 pages ago. Here is the wiki article that summarizes some discoveries/debates about the stars of the Long Night.

Are you sure your name isn't NeologismGirl? (Stop tittering in the back row. That's enough now!)
But I don't like this Long Night - presumably they were all of similar length. Something like Endured Night would better describe what happened both to MeCue and us.

NeologismGirl... that just makes me think of the superheroes game from Whose Line is it Anyway :P

Perhaps it is Beanie custom that when a particularly 4 tree is encountered, one must take the time to contemplate the 4ness of the tree.
