Idea: let's all go to the Geekwagon viewer and make sure that it pauses on the correct frames (i.e. voting up dialogue frames and voting down unimportant frames that somehow got voted up).

3097 newpix that has to mean something! Right? That's C19 in hexadecimal. Does C19 mean anything? The Boeing C19? Maybe a section of Map Grid?

I prefer mscha's viewer, frankly. It doesn't let you animate them, but it gives you more access to the actual information, and also mustarded frames. Also, it loads in under a second, whereas geekwagon takes like ten seconds before it shows anything for me.

I doubt any site would support the load tonight. :) But yes, it needs a better architecture.

The end.

Well it had to happen eventually, didn't it? And it's at a suitable point; their exploration saved their people, as did their epic sandcastle creation of course, and they're off to start a new life - not scavenging from hill people any longer though! Perhaps they will rejoin the beanies, or perhaps as some have said they've gone a different way. Either way, I've enjoyed the story, and my time here in the OTT.

Thanks to you all here for making it a fun shared experience.

So long and thanks for all the ONGs!

(unless an epilogue appears one day, I know I'll be checking occasionally!)

A few things to say quickly. Follow-up thoughts later.

1. Thunderous applause.

2. The last scene did seem like a likely final scene to me. In fact, the last several sections or chapters or eras or whatever we end up calling them, came across as epilogue-like. And then the final sandcastle sealed the deal.

3. I hope the people of this thread stick around for a while. I think there's room for some new OTTifications, further critical thoughts, and other creative stuff now that there is an encompassed whole to work from. (Consider, for example, book discussions, that don't normally even start until the book is not only completed, but read in its entirety by most of the correspondents.) Knowing the audience isn't going to disappear right away would encourage more creativity. I for one pledge to keep up for at least another week, probably longer.

4. "I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam." -- Frodo Baggins

5. "Nothing ends, Adrian. Nothing ever ends." -- Dr. Manhattan.

6. The title is Time, and Randall has said quite a bit about Time. I'll be trying to unpack it all over the next several days.

Are there any offline-mode packages of any of the viewers? If the comic is truly over, that might be a useful feature to add.

That would be so awesome!
And shouldn't be that hard, because all the key frames are already there. The time between to newpix ( or longpix) wouldn't be consistent in that series though.

And the story ended, more or less, as it began.

Megan and Cueball building a sandcastle. A beach. The sea. And then running off to go exploring.

You could, to be fair, see it all coming. Everything they went through - all the landmarks they passed on their way up, they ran past them again on the way down, employing the storytelling device that allows you to see your favourite places and features one last time.

You saw La Petite, and you got to see what remained of their poor sandcastle - which turned up to save their lives, almost as if it were a Big Dumb Animal that turns up, remembers who treated it right early in the story and offers them a ride.

So to speak.

They went up to the mountains to understand everything. And while they may not have entirely understood everything ... we did. Because we identified the time, the date, the planet and the location (the Mediterranean), and got to toy with an entirely new language, Beanish.

I think he's told everything he's needed to tell.

Short of there being a Time II some way down the line (Cuegan and the other 38 of The Forty face shenanigans from the displaced Hill People and the Beanies, and Rosetta wants her Maps back), I can't imagine what else he can tell at this point.

And Time II would vaguely disappoint, kind of like the last season of Babylon 5, or the Ori seasons of Stargate SG-1.

One thing that desperately needs adding to the Geekwagon viewer is a way to access the bitstring for each frame as it is stored on the xkcd server.

Since we had all those LOTR comparisons.. maybe this is just like when Sam and Frodo got off the boat at the end of movie 1. And end-of-March next year will be part 2? Wishful thinking. I think I'm still in denial.

I've been following both the OTC and the OTT since frame 1, but haven't posted much. While I found the ending a bit abrupt, that's Munroe's perogative. I've been astonished that he kept it up this long, and hope he posts some info about the project.

Thanks, Randall, it's been a fun journey.
I hope you make a T-shirt for this.

Someone's already updated Wikipedia, btw.

Heresy! The Sequel!

THIS IS HERESY! The Ori portion of SG1 only sucked because they canceled the series half way through the story arch so it had a HORRID ending.

Speaking of this, sometime long ago, I donated a couple bucks to a viewer-maker.
How do I donate a few to you, mscha, for your molpy-hunting and assorted awesomeness?
(I confess it will only be a few dollars, as I am kinda broke since I left work for the little one.)

I appreciate the gesture, but not necessary. (See fractint contribution policy.)

And so Time ends. I'm sad. :( I was hoping we'd get to solve the language problem....

But thanks Randall. And thanks to everyone else; it's been a great trip, and I've appreciated both the company and the assistance.

Since I'm expecting the discussion to continue, I'll be checking in here from time to time.

BCNU! If not here, then somewhere else.

It feels more like the Grey Havens to me...
