Yay random button! :D *click* *click* *click*
That's interesting. I didn't notice that the url supplied by mscha's site goes to the random generator instead of the actual newpix. Is there a way to fix this, mscha? It's simple enough to substitute the actual frame url for the random one next Time I try it, but it would be nice if the copy-paste url led to the newpix by default instead of sending the click to a different random frame.

This is as opposed to what you are most proud of (which involves effort and result), but rather, what result or response gave you the most pleasure. For me it was probably my train wreck double dactyl.

Most rewarding for me was probably coining "molpy" and seeing how the rest of you have embraced that term and used it yourselves. :) Special thanks to mscha, for being the first person to use it besides me, and also for providing the second half of the portmanteau with "compy," as well as yappo for linking "molpy down/up" to adorable animolpies and making it a thread-meme. (The poster PacMan provided the first half with "mole," but he hasn't been seen on the OTT in two and a half mips now.)

That's a perfect title for the end of time. Or it can be shortened to TFWMNBN, but that doesnt sound good. Any thoughts for an appropriate name?

What about Voldeframe? Or Voldepix?

 I was thinking along the same lines. You-Know-Which-Frame?

The Unspeakable Frame.

+1

I also kind of like voldeframe. It could be the UF or the VF for short.

Edit: Oooh, Pagepope! Share something about yourself that nobody here would know about you.
For me that's easy (since nobody knows me yet!) I like to fly remote control planes.

I have the NoScript extension for Firefox to thank for tipping me off that Time was special. Without its alert bar popping up, I probably would have dismissed it as a simple single-frame comic and moved on, never to think of it again. Instead, it prodded me to check Explain XKCD and the forums to find out what was going on.

How did other TimeWaiters come to realise that there was more to this comic than first met the eye?

Why is it that every time I feel like I am beginning to deal with this, and accept it, someone had to come along a post a sad OTTification? Thanks Dracomax  (No really! That was beautiful!! :D )

@Wonder93 You can do it! We will be here waiting. We're good at that, you know

I am confused. Why is everyone saying the D-Dactyls are gone from the wiki? They are right here. Or did someone manage to restore the page?

Some "Hero Of The Dip" wiki-warrior must have restored It (or Valarya must have re-written it very quickly), because earlier todip we couldn't find it. Not by searching for "Dactyl" or anything. There wasn't even a link to it on the front page.

I'm currently back on NP1276, slowly slogging my way through all the sad posts about the You-Know-What of Time, and also reading some of the present. I just wanted to note that I've uploaded the three existing chapters of The Dark Lord to Archive of Our Own. I do plan on finishing it, eventually...

I was catching up on xkcd OtherComics that I had missed during the Easter holidip, and didn't understand what "Time" and a picture of a partially constructed castle meant. So I checked the forums...

Let me add my thanks for the restore job, too, Zorin. Valarya will be so happy. She's been searching for it for a couple of dips now. I believe she in the past looking for all the double-d's right now.

I saw the comic (it must have been already the third or fourth image) and the title text and couldn't make any sense of it. When that happens, I always check the forum thread for the comic, and since then I have been reading the OTT, later using mscha' wonderful frame list page to keep up.

OK, and to get started with another OTT tradition...

Are you sure about Overcompensating? He's posted plenty as recently as last month, and is only currently down due to site renovation as far as I know.

Unless he announced some horrible end/hiatus to Overcompensating that I missed, in which case NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

He told me he wants to restart, but keeps missing deadlines. He also said he could either draw or sleep. The business takes all his time. Jeffrey, if you are lurking here, you are missed.

MobTeeseboose (who I've just noticed is back :D it left for a while) is a forum bot, that's all really. It's become a running joke because it always seems to be online and browsing this forum, even in the middle of the (relative) night.

The list at the bottom is those browsing all fora, not just this one. We surmise that Mobteeseboose is either a spy or a bot. Probably the former.

My story is like so many others here (like BlitzGirl's). I saw it on the first day and sat and waited for about a minute or two ("Wait For It") and nothing happened. Came back later that day and was all "Is this different? I don't think it looked like that before". Then, maybe the next day, I saw it was definitely different. Went to explain-wiki and to this forum and found out that it WAS changing.
I lurked up until "The Fading", joined up because I wanted folks here to know I had been lurking and wanted them to know how much fun I had reading along with them. Since it was obvious the story was ending there.
(2000 odd frames later. Damn. It happened.)

Greetings, all. Delurking to take the blame: I finally broke down & registered, then it ends! Reminds me of the first two jobs I had. It's more complicated. Several houses share an enclosed back yard. Three cats live there half-wild (one woman brought them in and fed them in the yard originally, but never socialised them.)
Several neighbors give them food and drink, but we have "adopted" them more "intense" than the others. They feel very much at home in our flat. And we are among the very few whom the cats allow to come close and touch them.

I could use an affordable, hobbyist-level digital mike, preferably one with built-in recording capacity so I don't have to record next to my 60dB computer. I'm not interested in voice acting ─ I might do narration or audiobooks, but not individual character voices ─ but I do sing, and am reasonably popular as an SCA bard. I'm a baritone, with a reasonably good ear and a folk-singer's voice.

I use a Shure C606 which is basically the affordable version of the famous SM58, and is still an excellent mic for half the price. (There isn't really such thing as a digital mic though, I'm not sure what you mean by that... they're all analogue really, and then your computer's sound card turns it into a digital signal...) but if you want something with built-in recording, you'll want something like a Zoom H1 (cheapest) or H2 (bit higher up the range) or H4 (top-end).

ETA: Don't forget you also started the trend of double dactyling!

No, you don't. Build quality is not really up to par, and IMHO, if you want one of those, go for the Sony PCM-D50, which is much sturdier and has better built-in mics, with the option to add external (well, the zoom does as well, but they have an amp problem resulting in a nasty buzz at certain frequencies). The D50 can usually only be found in overstock and has been superceded, but I don't know the newer version. Just my opinion. Not that the Zoom is necessarily bad, but the D50 is better.

Fair enough, I don't actually know anything about handheld recorders, I never use them. I just assumed the Zoom ones were considered the best but I guess not.

Others have offered their artistry and skill in OTTifications, graphs, maps, stats, scripts and insanity; I offer, for those who may be interested in trying their own spin on it, my meagre effort, the OTT's first homebrew recipeߧ

Ale What-d'If

Spoiler:
Along the lines of a Belgian Pale Ale
(All Grain Recipe, 30L batch)

Malts:
5kg Pale 2-row malt
1.5kg Munich 10L malt
750G Crystal 20L malt
Single-infusion mash at 67C, 60min.
Mashout at 74C, 15min.

Hops:
Cascade 35g, 60min.
Saaz 25g, 5min.
(might want to increase the Cascades a bit to 50g, but the recipe is still in development, so I'm going a bit conservative at first - I want this to be a really well-balanced session ale.)

Adjuncts:
Sweet Orange Peel, 25g added to boil 5min before flame-out
Black Peppercorns (crushed), 10g to boil for 5min

ETA Specifics: OG 1.048, FG 1.013 according to Brewtarget, but I'll bet on it being 1.012. IBU 22 BU/GU 0.46. ABV 4.6%.

Use your favourite Belgian Ale yeast - mine is a slurry cultured from a bottle of Maredsous Dubbel (so very likely Duvel house yeast.)
Start fermentation at 18, but allow it to run uncontrolled as high as it wants - like the sea it knows what it's doing.
I guess that primary fermentation will last 10-14 days. Secondary,... well, how patient are you? Can you Wait for It? I've Waited as long as 6 months with this particular yeast, and the results are spectacular. In view of the OTC connection I'll suggest 4 months. Just enough time to enjoy a comic strip. (Just kidding - we should be able to bottle/keg this in a month to 6-weeks.)

BTW The specialty malts I'm using are from Malterie du Chateau in Belgium. It really is all related.

ߧAs far as I know, anyway.

Awesomeful idea! Weirdly, I also had this idea the other dip, but my brewing knowledge is too non-existant to actually have done it myself, so I'm glad you did!

Oh yeah, I am quite proud of starting the whole molpying up and down thing! It was all because after seeing your comic where "molpy up" first appeared I said that it made me think of the Lion King, and then you made the "molpy up" manip which appears in my avatar, which then inspired me that night to sign off with a sleeping ottermolpy and the words "molpy down"... which seemed to catch on!

Nope, not a load problem. The slow speed is due to the crappy way I'm storing and serving the data. Not even using a database. Going to be making major changes over next few weeks to improve this.

Hello, everybody. I am still here and don't intend to leave. Hugs to everyone. And praise Randall.

I had nearly ketched up when the frame-which-must-not-be-named occurred. First I thought it was a fake ONG. Oh, well. The thread is still amazing. Remember:

elangeland wrote:How did other TimeWaiters come to realise that there was more to this comic than first met the eye?

Well, when Time started, I had learned that the forums could usually explain xkcd jokes that I didn't understand. So I saw one of the early frames, when they were just sitting, and I went to the forums, saw the discussion ("Oh! Did she move?"), so I decided to follow the thread and wait for the punchline.

Still waiting.

There are so many of you that I would like to marry, but I think my wife would object.

So apparently, the last page I read on this thread was 267. I spent too much time Outside, then quite accidentally talked to a friend about this on Friday, and a few hours later he tells me it's The End!
So clearly, I spent the whole evening yesterday catching up on all the frames that I missed (about 2000 or so), and reading the wiki. Do I want to read 1000+ pages on the forum now?

And something about me - I'm a huge tennis fan.

Hi all! Finally delurking after a long long Time!

I first figured out that there was something a little different about 1190 sometime around the nighttime scene, and have been lurking here ever since. I followed pretty closely right up to the Newpix-About-Which-We-Do-Not-Speak (NAWWDNS?), and have been following you through the many stages of trauma ever since.

I have to say that I am very impressed with much of what I read here, and feel honoured to have been a (lurking) part of it. The linguistic investigations of Beanish, and the analysis of the geography and astronomy were particularly impressive, but the sense of community and cameraderie was also pretty neat. Thanks to all!

First day "Time" was up, I checked it, and saw two people looking at a small sandcastle they seemed to have just finished (frame 35m), read the title-text ("Wait for it."), and didn't get the joke. So, as I do when the joke appears to be completely over my head, I checked the forum. I finally decided to delurk three days later, and made a correct prediction as to what the pan/zoom would reveal and wonder about the spike in membership of the forum.
