1246: "Pale Blue Dot"

Postby rhomboidal » Fri Aug 02, 2013 4:58 am UTC

Title Text: Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. There is no road out of this oblivion; we must embrace it. We must join with the darkness. Ba'al the Annihilator offers us no happiness, no answers, naught but the cold embrace of the void. To imagine any other end is delusion. We must give in to the will of Ba'al, for he will one day consume us and our world alike. I therefore call on Congress to fully fund space exploration, and to join with Ba'al, the Eater of Souls. Thank you.

I'm still holding out hope in the Second Coming -- of Carl Sagan.

It's been a long time since I flat out laughed at a comic. Enjoyed yes, but not taking lol literally.

My IE alt text clips it at "I therefo". I thought that was part of the joke until I saw the full alt text in this forum. The clipped version may be funnier.

Not by scientists. But give the image to a Crime Scene Investigator. I've seen where they can take a picture from an ATM, magnify the window in the background to show the reflection, from that reflection look at a car mirror and then see who the killer was.

I was serving on a Jury when a juror said something really close to this. We had everything except a video of the bullet leaving the gun and flying through the air, but there was still doubt in her mind.

Yes, quite.

The notion that extra-terrestrial life is extant, intelligent, societal, sufficiently advanced, contactable, all within the timeframe of the human species's survival is simply the hopelessly optimistic astronomics' iteration of the nature-worshipping nonsense of the faithful who attribute nature to a benevolent creator and of the spiritual who believe nature to be itself benevolent. This is the third time this week I want to quote Werner Herzog, but can't be bothered so here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xQyQnXrLb0

The point being, the odds are short on extance, intelligence, society, advancement, contactability, and coincidence. Multiplied together, the odds of extra-terrestrial contact are remote to the point of … well, utter pointlessness.

As far as we know. But that could change. For example, if it turns out the panspermia theory is correct, several of these factors would suddenly become a lot more likely (not overwhelmingly, but noticably, IMO).

I didn't care much for him, because when he was heading the Planetary Society he was pretty much actively campaigning against manned space exploration, saying that robotic probes would give us everything we would need to know about space. His articles about that in The Planetary Report, was why I quite being a member. But that was quite awhile ago.

so, what can meatbags in space tell us that machines can't?
manned exploration is really pretty silly. sending people to mars serves no scientific purpose whatsoever and costs a fortune. explore with probes, like we, incidently, already do, and follow up with humans when there is a realistic and economically reachable objective.

Just in case there is any chance that some of you might have had creationist home-schooling parents or something, and just in case you haven't read Pale Blue Dot, obviously that's a problem and we'll need to rectify that. I recommend the soothing yoomanism of the Carl-read audiobook version over the paper version.

This comic's Ba'al sounds an awful lot like Sithrak (despite the click-through warning, that particular comic is perfectly safe for work, but other pages on that site may not be).
