It has to do with OSH being a truncated acronym instead of the full acronym for OTTer Scavenger Hunt in Time.

Date and Place

Postby Davidy » Fri Aug 09, 2013 8:12 pm UTC

Seriously? Nobody has an opinion?
Previous discussions on similar subjects went on for pages.
Or are we done with minutia?

Spoiler:
I may have missed something somewhere but I don't recall seeing a discussion of the date based on the latest night scene (MSCHA 3076). Previous discussions of the date when Cuegan met Lucky was that it was 14 Apr 13291. My reading of the sky in 3076 is that the scene can be no earlier than 2:00AM on 10 May 13291. Any earlier than that date/time and either the Moon or Venus would be in the picture. This means that from Lucky to the fortress and back home took 26 days for the trip. This seems like too long a time.

The scene in 3076 is a view of the sky at an observational compass heading of 20-25o. The crews are moving to the right, or a heading of 110-115o. This is in disagreement with edfel's map which shows them moving north toward France. I believe they are moving roughly east and their subsequent landfall is on the island of Corsica.

@Davidy: You might have to <spoiler>. The longer discussions occurred in the Time of starry newpix in the OTC, and many different people were checking the OTT precisely because of those starry newpix. It might take longer for OTTers with interests in astronomy to see your topic, these dips.

Hmm, east would be very very wrong. Maybe west toward Spain or (check google maps and cross-referencing wikipedia) the Balearic Islands? But East just doesn't make sense for the story, as they should be pushed by the sea to the north or west but definitely not south or east... right? Maybe the boat got turned around, though they were pretty emphatic about designating the right side as the front...

It does seem that a majority of OTC analysts aren't really present lately. Mostly we're left with OTT analysts and a collective of artists.

efpd (edited for papal decree): Yeah, make a note of what the alt-text changed to. It's assumed at that point in the experience that everyone will be able to go to the xkcd site and see what the alt-text is, but you can't because it isn't still on that particular frame, and they may not want to spoiler by looking at what it is now (even though it's not much of a spoiler at this point).

Anybody interested in making OTTer of the OTC a collaborative effort? It's a sea-ish song, and I'm still scrambling to ketchup. Which in no way implies approval of eating scrambled eggs with ketchup on them. Ketchup while eating anything you like, but keep the tomato sauce off your eggs.

(Unless it's huevos rancheros. Then just don't eat it around me.) :P

La Petite - Version 2.0

Postby svenman » Fri Aug 09, 2013 8:43 pm UTC

Hi all!

Back just a little before the least enjoyable newpix of all Time I posted my first, and so far only, song ottification. Since then it has come to my attention that in the OTC La Petite was in fact not at all clear on the distinction between a raft and a boat, a distinction that I had made a bit of a deal about in my original lyrics, which in retrospect doesn't seem appropriate anymore.

Therefore I went and changed the lyrics, and while I had the opportunity I also introduced some other changes which I feel make the lyrics work better than in the older version.

So without further ado, let me present to you:

La Petite - Version 2.0
(based on "Reet Petite" by Jackie Wilson)
Spoiler:
Well, look about, look about, look about, look about, new sea!
Look about, look about, look about, look about, new sea!
Ooh! Ah! Ooh! Ah! New sea!

Well, she's so bright, bright, bright, she's so bright, b-b-bright,
She's so bri-yi-yi-yi-yi-yight, she's so bright, bright, bright.
She's really neat, the smartest girl you ever gonna meet.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, - Oh, oh, oh, oh, -
La Petite, the smartest girl you ever gonna meet.

Well, have you ever seen a girl who wears a white beret,
Who'd save a sand castle and work for it all day?
She's so bright, she's so bright,
She's really neat, the smartest girl you ever gonna meet.

Well, she really takes a wooden deck and makes it float,
Turns it all into some kind of raft (or boat)!
She's alright, she's alright,
She's alright, wears her beret day and night.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, - Oh, oh, oh, oh, -
La Petite, the smartest girl you ever gonna meet.
Oh!

Well, she's my cousin, she's awe-inducing,
Instead of drowning, she's got us neatly cruising!
She's alright, she's got what it takes,
She's got what it takes, and what an awefulsome boat she makes!

Well, she's our glimmer of hope, our river swimmer,
Without her, I'm sure, our future would be dimmer!
She's alright, she's got just what it takes.
She's got what it takes, and what an awefulsome boat she makes!

Oh, oh, oh, oh, - Oh, oh, oh, oh, -
La Petite, the smartest girl you ever gonna meet,
La Petite, the smartest girl you ever gonna meet,
La Petite, the smartest girl you ever gonna meet!

ETA: Oooh, TheMinim, now there's an idea: I should really try ottifying Tim Minchin one of these days...

Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

I was deluding myself into thinking it was more. That this was more.

I won't promise that this is my last post, but it feels like it.

Correct. No one will like it. I get that you feel damaged by the ending, but that gives you no right to try to damage it for others. And the evidence is coming in that you have.

If you want to get respect, you have to show respect. At the current moment that is totally lacking.

Maybe I'm missing something, but where's all this hate coming from? Announcing the end hardly seems like a true spoiler,, just as saying "that movie is 1 hour, 42 minutes long", or "that book has 622 pages". .
To me, what is really "damaging" to the blitzers is pretending that nothing is wrong, and denying them the chance to share support for the end of Time.

{P1277}
This hate is coming from Edo. He did it deliberately and in spite of multiple requests to desist from various people. If my memory was any better and I had noted the time his spoiler sigs appeared I would have had to walk knowingly into The End; fortunately my CRS saved me from that horror.
Edited to remove my opinion of Edo. (For gods sake stop it, OTTer, you're breaking my arm)

Is that what you want? They won't get the consolation we've been getting. No shoulder for them o cry on. Whatever. I guess it's just a stupid webcomic.

{P1277}
This hate is coming from Edo. He did it deliberately and in spite of multiple requests to desist from various people. If my memory was any better and I had noted the time his spoiler sigs appeared I would have had to walk knowingly into The End; fortunately my CRS saved me from that horror. The guy's a chirphole.

I respectfully disagree. I had the impression that Edo sincerely believed he was doing blitzers a service and only got somewhat angry when he felt his efforts underappreciated, or even misconstrued as wilfully malignant.

Also, I'd prefer if we'd all refrain from calling other people - in this thread or elsewhere - unfriendly names. That is not the kind of atmosphere I have come to appreciate in the OTT. Thank you.

ETA: And thanks for the appreciation, BlitzGirl! :D

If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

It's as if the GLR was fed up with it and wanted to end it (or alternatively, had to end it for some reason, perhaps going on vacation – hopefully nothing more serious). It's as if Time is a Stephen King novel (like the uncut edition of The Stand), part one (The Beach) is 800 pages, part two (The Journey) is 1200 pages, and the grand finale (Run!) is rushed through in a single chapter (30 pages).
The open end I can learn to live with, but this rush job? I have a hard time accepting it.

Yeah, they were on the castleraft the same number of newpix that we were getting chirped at back in the day...
Maybe he just wanted to pick up the pace, but it felt odd. Anyway, it's been a great achievement nevertheless. Thank you, Randall, and thanks to all of you for making it this great experience that the OTT has been (is, and hopefully will be).

Agreed all around. The RUN sequence did feel rushed -- too rushed, confusingly rushed, almost clumsily rushed; more and more so as it went on. And yes, Time is a great achievement nevertheless, one I am grateful for.

More to say later.

ETA: OK, a little bit more to say now. I think the main problem I'm having with the ending -- and some of you too, it sounds like -- is specifically the *confusion* around the pace. The OTC has always been about reading between the lines (somewhat literally). We had to guess at what happened between frames, what details weren't being drawn, is that squiggle a rock or a molpy, sometimes even which character was which. Often we collectively did quite a good job. Sometimes we were thrown off, but usually a few more frames would reveal the error. However, many of us COMPLETELY misjudged the pace of the ending, so when it came, we stepped on a step that wasn't there... and took a pretty hard fall. It's unfortunate, but the shock will fade.

(Still more to say later -- but, later for real this time.)

{P1278}
I think any delaying devices could only have been repetition of previously used ones. Also tossing the forty around on the waves for scores of NewPics would have taken more drawing time than there is in the day. And, there wasn't a mystery - drift to the (future) dry land and walk uphill. With nothing more to reveal it would have just been annoying to drag it out. In hindsight.

Thinking about it, I don't know why the last frame is not the one with the words 'The End' on. Having frames after that point leaves me with a sense of incompleteness, like there's something not quite right. I'm not insane, I'm not even in France.

@Davidy I think I may have missed it. In any case, I cannot seem to remember if the exact date was really something we had all come to a consensus about. I know that many of the OTTstronomers were using several different programs to align the stars and determine approximately when the story occurred. So I think a general consensus of April or May of 13291 is close enough to fit the purposed of the story and analysis.

As for their directional heading while being pushed by the rising sea, can that even truly be determined? I believe that GLR used time compression toward the end, so it is very difficult to determine how far and for how long they drifted. Edfel's map is best guess.

what we may be experiencing is how time moves in the future ... that strange, waiting sorta feeling ... more unknown, high potential, high risk ...
maybe ... we are the flashback sequence ...

It seems we've stopped speculating when it's going to end. Is Randall going to keep this going for years? Or is there a significant date or frame number he is planning to stop on? What is the current state of the bets on this?

I had a strange thought today. What would happen if it just ended? Suddenly. "The End". Unlike a two hour movie, or a 30 hour book, even a once per week TV series, so many people have spent countless hours (14,000 posts?) every day, analyzing a comic to a pixel level. Inventing names for things that aren't there - molpy's. Speculated to infinity about where this story is going, what does Time mean, and why are we waiting for it. If it ended badly - without significant explanation of what it all means - what would happen? How deeply unsatisfying would that be?

(Heresy).

Anyways, just thinking out loud. Glad to see so much conversation between Cuegan in the recent few OTCs.

Did anyone else play the game The Longest Journey, and then the sequel Dreamfall? Dreamfall ended with lots of plot holes remaining wide open and in the last 5 minutes of the game opened lots more. Then for years it seemed like no sequel was going to be made... it was... kind of devastating when we were so invested in the plot and characters only to find you will never really know the answers. As it turns out now, there is another sequel finally in development, but at this point my expectancy and investment has faded.

Time fades all things, good or bad. I am presently invested in a story and a community and it makes me feel good. But it is an important lesson to remember that nothing in the real world other than stories have a true end. It never comes. Things fade in and fade out and that's all there is. Love whatever-it-is when it is there, and share that with someone. That's what we are all doing here. That is what this is about.

On topic: Megan's hypothesis "We can answer any question" is an interesting one. I think in the outside, we kind of know that both philosophically and scientifically this is a false hypothesis; there are questions that cannot be answered. Does this highlight Megan's naivety? Cueball has frequently been portrayed as the naive one, but this comment by Megan I think highlights the most important lesson so far for both us and Cuegan. Until now, most of the comic had seemed kind of random to me. I knew that is wasn't because obviously it has been bestowed to us by GLR himself. But now I am really starting to feel inklings of his message here. I still question whether when he started having them make sandcastles he knew what he was going to say. I have a suspicion that the sandcastle era was a way for him to run the experiment, measure the reception/reaction and then formulate a story that conveys a more meaningful message to us.

Part of me longs for the time when Randall can talk openly about the whole thing, and we will have an idea about what he was really thinking as he created it. But that is also a time when this community will most likely have begun to fade and so I also dread that time. I fall back on my One True Directive: Love and share.

When the time of grieving ends, will we wake up and realize that it is but Randall's time of waiting and watching that has ended?

His Time, not ours.

We now enter the beginning of our Time. Our creating, our doing, our being, our loving, our sharing.

For all its mustards and it's molpies the OTC has deeply inspired me. Above all, it has shown me a completely new way to create and to share a story. I love the new technique and I am dying to give it a try. There is so much I have wanted to do over the past 4 months, but I have been too busy at work; too occupied with my kids and family; too captivated by the mystery and suspense and wonder of the OTC and of course, you guys.

Well the OTC grew and became part of me.
And now it has left a void.
A void that must be filled.
And it will be filled.

I am arriving back in New York on Sunday.
My work-play-life balance will stabilize over next week.
And my website's alt-text will become:

Spoiler:
Wait for it.

Late, but well here it is: http://kieryn.com/
Time and the OTT has inspired my creative side. I'll be launching my new site on Monday...
