Jose: you know what I'm going to say.

Do we know what our current cultural status/age/era is?

Shouldn't Exodies have arrived by now?

Just wanted to say hi... I'm here... lurking... just working on tomorrow's newslide...

@Blitzgirl ... m1485 I like that you are doing the treasure hunt things... it's a fun game. I contemplated writing an AI script thing that would have checked for small monochrome images in posts with the text OSH and then done a pattern matching check against the set of frames, then rendered the matched frame with a red circle around the match and finally posted the image back, all within maybe 30 seconds or so.

It would have been fun for me to watch you as you all slowly realized what was going on, but it would have taken me too long and also probably would have taken some of the fun out of it.

At 2:52? This cannot be. I started ketchupping at 1:00 if not earlier. Maybe it's the active population when you loaded the page? Ask the server.

@ucim, chapter 26: WOW. You should get your copyright on that (no joke -- when somebody else makes a film from it that point will be self-evident, alas too late).

As I'm at the end of my Latin (that I never had) with respect to Beanish, I'd like to ask you what language the "foreign couple" speaks? I thought of Romanian but could easily exclude that with dict.cc.

Base 36, most likely. Assuming by letters and numbers you mean all the english letters and arabic numerals.

24 ones in all, then. Or perhaps bits. I suspect this is related to the earlier puzzle. And probably the rest of this haikuified gibberish. I just can't make head nor tail of it.

That would have been funny. Oshbot, the scavenger-hunt-loving cousin of newpixbot!
In this alternate reality, it would only take a few oshbot ninjas before OTTers would start to debate bot-etiquette again, eventually concluding that oshbot be allowed to continue but on a delay like newpixbot.
(And m1485 is correct!)

On Friday we had an office bowling outing, during which I got a high score prize in one of the games (my score was 142). Thought maybe he'd be proud of me... :-)

I'm still here. . .I've just been hopelessly behind for the past week. My days have been spent helping two of my kids pack up their stuff and move back to college. I'm still looking for a job, which means my evenings are spent working on that. I haven't had a lot of time to keep up with the OTT. Fortunately, moving the kids is done now, so tonight has been the first chance I've had to make an effort to make a miniblitz.

Earlier I saw someone pose a puzzle about the Roman numeral XXXVIII. Has anyone solved that yet? If not, I think I know the answer.

Spoiler:
If you alphabetize all of the Roman numerals, that one comes last.

By the way, while I've been miniblitzing, I've taken a few minutes to glance at the new offline development efforts: the smiley repository, Kieryn's new Webpage, "Obelisk", and Scisitor's database. Man, those are some impressive things! This is one heck of a community.

I need to hurry up and ketchup before I get thrown in the basement.

The energy present in the Zanclean flood has been estimated at 1.6x1022 Joules. Wolfram|Alpha says that this is equivalent to 3.8x1012 tons of TNT. The Hiroshima bomb was equivalent to around 15 kilotons of TNT. The Zanclean flood was 3.8, not kilotons, not megatons, not even gigatons, but teratons of TNT, or about 200 billion Hiroshima bombs.

...That's quite a trebuchet! Incidentally, this makes me feel like GLR doing a what-if - you can make numbers bigger, and nobody can stop you.

Let's be efficient about this. If we stack the solar panels up, we can probably do this using only 1/100 the area or less. That would let them fit into the Mediterranean basin. That would put them close to the pumps, saving money on wiring.

But if we stack them, that means they shade each other for a significant portion of the day, and they won't be distributed over the whole surface of the earth so night begins to be a problem. It would probably take a bit longer. So we have to decide: save potentially millions of dollars on wiring, or charge several hours faster. Personally, I'm leaning towards charging faster.

An apology1 in advance : When I found this thread I saw that it'd be impossible to blitz my way all the way to the present and I didn't feel it was right to blind-post or time-warp to contribute ideas about the actual OTC story. So I had to wait until GLR turned off the firehose...

Now I find Kieryn's OTT navigator ( http://xkcd-time.kieryn.com/Default/ForumNavigator ) to be just the thing I need to answer those questions like, "what did the OTTers surmise when Cuegan first showed a fear of stepping into the river?".

Unfortunately, the navigator is slow to load, seems often unavailable (as in, the whole server's down) and at this point about 720+ newpix out of date. So I've made my own (simpler) newpix-to-OTT index, here:

http://mrob.com/time

It's pretty simple, just a two-column table with the newpix number on the left (by the mscha numbering, i.e. T** **D = 3089) and a link to the OTT at the moment the frame became available (or should have been, modulo any server delays or other madness). The link to OTT is on the format "OTT newpage:postnum", where the post number is zero-based, for example this post will be somewhere around OTT 1412:29 unless I get ninja'd.

It spent a couple daysoutsider to (slowly) collect the data and I found the date parsing to be a real pain, but now that I've written it, it should be pretty easy to add a little more info, such as perhaps the links to GeekWagon/Aubron/OTW. There's also the matter of dealing with the inevitable drift of newpage/postnum when posts get deleted (see "being goated" in the wiki) for which I'll have to do a bunch of extra annoying parsing that I'd really don't want to bother with, and maybe someone can help me.

So let me know if this is useful to anyone.

(Edit: of course, T** **D was 3089, not 3094 :x I keep getting miscounting the meteor pix)

Huh. So much for renouncing evil on Newpage 857, I guess.

You would make an excellent evil haberdasher, ChronosDragon. :)

Unfortunately not going to happen. He'd need the crystal he put on my hat, whatever it is. Sometimes it seems to have a mind of its own.

You, on the other hand, should remember popes have disbanded the papacy themselves. Didn't work.

Why would we need solar panels anyway?

1: Acquire time machine.
2: Go forward in time to after Mediterranean has dried up (as a result of the pumping you have yet to do) just before it's about to flood again.
3: Set up hydroelectric power station at Gibraltar
4: Flood comes, generates lots of electricity
5: Take electricity back in time (probably using magnets)
6: Use electricity to power pumps to drain Mediterranean in the first place
7: ...
8: Profit!

Why, that's almost as ingenious as using portals to flood the Mediterranean with itself! (Generating electricity in the process, of course).

Oh, the chaos emera- err. Completely harmless, ordinary bauble. No significance whatsoever. Especially given I have the other six right here...

So a child is 5424160? And if I wasn't too busy to turn parent and black bird (or maybe a particular black bird, like raven, into base 36, I could subtract and divide and get 6 or 28 or some higher perfect number. And what does that get me? Do we need that particular perfect number for something?

Antares was missing, and a little box, and a lot of frames on the return trip.... Warm? Cold?

Ebonite! Good to see you! Sorry the job hunt hasn't landed you a sweet position yet.

Yeah, it's mscha TimeFrame numbers, assuming I got it all right and I'm not confused. It makes for the easiest conversion function (warning, these numbers are in heretical units, use with caution):

Code: Select all

    $nextONG = 1364184000
             + ($g_newpx * 1800)
             + (($g_newpx > 240) ? (($g_newpx-240) * 1800) : 0);

where g_newpx is the frame number of the latest frame and nextONG is the UNIX time (secondsheretical since midnightheretical on Januaryheretical 1, 1970heretical) when we would have expected the next frame to arrive, were it not for that unmentionable1 mustardly1 nastiness1.

BlitzGirl wrote:(It's ε to see that, had Time gone on, we would be up to nearly 3900 newpix by now.)

Yeah, don't think about it too much, pretty sad. But measuring things in newpix sure makes all the outsider systems look pretty mustardish. I also use Julian dates and UNIX time a lot.
