I thought of that, but one of them was upside down. No, wait, that's the way amphora are supposed to be!

Welcome back! If you've gone through 800 pages, you can do it all! (as long as it keeps being fun. :) )

Although personality certainly comes through in textual interactions like this (especially if there is enough of it so people are relaxed interacting this way), the (very real) differences in interaction lead to people interacting in different ways than they would in person. People like me (non-psychologist, not doing analysis) come up with mental images of posters which probably differ in many ways from the way the people behind the words actually are; If all the Otters were tossed in a room, I wonder how long it would take for us to recognize each other, and how well we'd match up with other people's mental images.

Totally. Not least mentally assigning incorrect genders to people, usually based on avatars (sorry, ED). I know the way I write is influenced by what was originally just a convenient avatar, and has now become a "character" within the thread - Human HES and Hamply HES have a lot in common, but there are significant differences. (I'm not nearly as cute, for starters)
Or maybe more of the real me seeps through than I realise.

I think one key is Jose's "relaxed", another is thread volume, and another thread length. The OTT has been compared (within the OTT) to a chat room or a cocktail party. The effort to keep up a mask as long as we've been talking means some of our "real" personality is bound to slip through.
I think most of my posts reflect my "real" personality, but I've been a little bit cautious with facts, so I don't know if you'd pick me out of a group or not, unless the gathering included our molpies.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) most of the above discussion is moot for ~60 of us because we're all on the OTT facebook group with real names/pictures/personalities. Join us!

I've thought about it. Not sure if I'm protecting my true name, or my online name, but I am very reluctant to let the two be linked.
monkeygentleman wrote:Blindposting from page 800.

Over the long weekend fell considerably behind, but I'm still churning through the OTT. It's a lovely place. Finally passed the halfway mark!

I almost lost motivation to continue reading, due to the pace at which new posts kept appearing. Life got busy, and I couldn't devote as much time to Blitzing as I wanted. Even thought about skimming, or skipping. But that's not the point, is it? The joy is in the journey, not the destination. So even if it hits 2000 pages before I finish, it's still an interesting ride.

It is that. Enjoy your journey!

Good afternoon fellow OTTerfolk! Have a #newslide.

Also I want to let you all know that I have a JSON api for the slide index:
http://kieryn.com/Slides/View?json=true

Javascript can be added to any given slide by including a JS file in the output HTML (This is how I made the twinkles happen).
Note: the script path for slide scripts is actually http://kieryn.com/Slides/_scripts/[file-name-here]. For example: http://kieryn.com/Slides/_scripts/obelisk-17.js

I have been meaning to do a nicer more fluid client side interface using the api, but I don't have much time and I'm not great at that (I'm more of a back-end developer) so if anyone wants to have a go I'd be supremely grateful.

Obviously it would be challenging for you to get the scripts to work as well, as they depend a lot on the layout of my site -- I hope one day to make these a little more widgety/plugin-able so they can work just about anywhere. If you have suggestions for how best to do that I'm listening :)

Have a wonderful day!

My own username means "I teach" and "I learn" in Serbo-Croatian. (I cheated by using an ordinary c instead of the proper SerboCroat letter, to make it easier to type.) I like the idea that teaching and learning happen together.

Oh, now I see. If I add the correct diacritics - "učím" - it means "I teach"1 in Czech too. It never came to my mind that it could mean that, even though diacritics is not sometimes used in the electronic form for technical reasons (or because of laziness).

And if we are explaining the origins of our usernames - mine is based on my real first name. It was created many years ago by reversing my name, replacing one letter with another that sounds the same and then translating part of it from Czech to English. Easy.
--- snip ---

1 If you want to say "I learn" in Czech, you have to add a special reflexive pronoun - "učím se" = literally "I teach myself". It stays in the same form for other persons - "učíš se" = "you teach yourself", "učí se" = "he/she/it teaches himself/herself/itself" and so on. It's actually kind of interesting and weird when I now think about the literal meaning.

And if your ancestors had only listened to St.St. Cyrill and Methodius back in the 9th century, you wouldn't need diactrics now: (уча, учиш, учи, учим, учите, учат) [се]
See?

Thu Aug 22, 2013 9:33 am UTC is the definitive date at which the OTT overtook Count to a Million in number of NewPages!! Thanks to yappobiscuits here, CHIRPongs yeah!!!

Man, what a close finish!

And after being defeated to NewPage 1398, Count to a Million didn't reach it till flicky1991 posted here by Sat Aug 24, 2013 4:46 am UTC, by then the OTT was at azule's post here, on NP1403!

Thanks everyone for continuing to go strong, we're all protagonists of Time, don't stop waiting for it!

And it's Yappobiscuits by an OTTer nose! Thanks, Vytron. I really enjoyed the play by play  I missed that post on 1405; I sort of gave up on my skim-blitzing when my sign post post was lost. After that it was more of a hop-skip-and-a-jump blitz to the present

I cycled to Box Hill this afternoon, which some may recognise as part of the Olymic road cycling route. Nice views, but I was harrassed by a waspsnake which was a little unnerving. Its not so much the fear of being stung, but the paranoia that I could be allergic. That and it's never nice to have something crawling on your face.
Seaish (I thought it was big, but it was doing whatever it wanted so isn't as bad)

I do this all the time. Not just here, but on facebook, emails, verbal communication... "never mind"
And other times I think "chirp it, I'm posting anyway" and then get really paranoid afterwards and don't check back until the next day. (Especially after strongly worded emails, of which I've had to write several lately)

Join us! Image

To an extent, yes. But I'm so bad with names that I've already forgotten how most of those (real people) translate (to OTTers). You will always be Val to me, even though I know better.

Should you care for a drink drink I have a small, but decent stock of non-hot wines and spirits.

On occasion, but certainly not the daily consumption of most of the western world. If it's for the purposes of warming me up on a cold winter evening, I'll settle for soup. I usually just drink water.
Despite being "reckless twenties young", my alcohol consumption is pretty low too. I don't "not drink", I just don't really drink. (I actually drink most when at my parents. Molpy that mustard out.)

Although we like to think that we create our online persona, I think that at least half of it is that because of the limitations of the medium, much is left to the reader's imagination. Each of us creates a mental image of every person we interact with online. We fulfill our own fantasies about that person, and build our image... which may have no relationship to the real person who had typed the words we are consuming. Unlike in meatspace, we do not get much of a chance to confirm (or refute) this mental image we create, so it persists much longer than in an actual face-to-face meeting. Each of us is, to some extent, what the other wants us to (or fears we might) be.

Countering that, when all we have is words to go on, a lot of otherwise automatic preconceptions never get a chance to take hold. ("She's a girl... he's still in school... she's black... he looks like a dork... she's gorgeous...) all of which influence our interactions in meatspace, whether we want them to or not. But other things become much more important in our estimation of that person. (this one''s an awesome artist... that one's always trying to push the envelope... this one loves attention... all that one talks about is tech stuff...)

Which is "more important" raises the question of what it is that makes a particular trait "important", and that raises the question of what kind of interactions one is going to have with the person.
And that takes us right back to the original question. "In what way is the upper right hand corner of this painting different from the second movmement of that sonata?" (Ok I eggagerate, but the point is still worth considering.)

That was a lovely post, Jose. It's interesting to think about how my perceptions of you all are that of inspiring, creative, intelligent, beautiful people (we *have* spent almost 6 months with one another here in this need-pulled space). Not that you aren't those things in real life, but this place allows us to break the typical societal barriers which occur when meeting and talking to someone face to face. The perception absolutely will be different. If we all met up in a hotel and watched Time update once-per-newpix, would we like each other as much as we do now?

Since I wasn't involved in the page of this discussion, I'll say one thing: With both my online persona and real-life person... I am not nearly as witty as I wish I were. :P

I think I'm finally caught up (again). We'll see how long that lasts. . .!
azule wrote:How do you see someone notable here in the OTT? With their permission, of course. Mine given of course.

I don't think my online persona would be very different from my real-life persona. In RL, I'm kind of introverted, and I tend not to speak up in large groups unless I have something significant to say. The same seems to be true even in this forum, as is evident from the fact that I've been here since Time began, but my post count is relatively low. My wife also thinks I never grew up, as is evidenced by my love of sci-fi, superheroes, entertainment, and puzzles, and my (she calls it juvenile, I call it "childlike") sense of humor. :-)

Related story: some years ago, when I used to work in a large company, I managed a team of several hundred people who resided in different cities and countries. I traveled to other locations periodically and got to meet most of my employees over time, but we conducted most of our day-to-day business via teleconferences. However, I had been in this role for about five years when, in one particular meeting, I cracked a joke. About two minutes later, one of the other guys on the call (Dave) started laughing belatedly. After the meeting was over, Dave asked me to stay on the line for a few minutes along with him and one other person.

It turns out after I made the joke, the other person (who was sitting next to Dave) whispered to him that he was surprised to discover I had a sense of humor. Dave and I had met several times, and so we knew each other pretty well. He knew that I'm actually quite a cut-up and very easy-going as far as middle managers go. . .but this other guy had never met me face-to-face after five years of working for me! Every time I had been in his city, he happened to be on vacation, out sick, or whatever, so we never had a chance to meet in person. The only perception he had of me is what he had gathered over the phone in business meetings, which was apparently: quiet, terse, and business-like. He was actually rather afraid of me. Dave thought that was hilarious.

We made a point of correcting that the next time I was in his city.

Getting back to the original topic: I'd be interested if anyone has any perception of me one way or the other, despite my non-Blitzgirl-like number of posts. :-)

Yes, you are right. Anyone care to extrapolate the date?

Well, we're doing a hundred pages a month, they're doing ten.
We're closing on them at 90 pages a month.
We're at 1438, they're at 2098, so we have 660 pages to go.
660/90 = 22/3 = 7 months and a week or so, so sometime in the middle of next April.

Just for fun, I'll predict it will happen on the anniversary of the Beginning of Time.

So I kinda stayed awake long enough earlier so I could buy a scaffold. But I kinda need to close my browser soon :(
Why did that ED guy share this without a save feature?

I was quickly torn away because I have much homework to be done and at the time had a page of ketchup ahead of that! But when I went to make this post, I noticed the tab was still open

Buy Cuegans or wait for another scaffold?

Should I make some javascript for people to paste in to save their game or is that too much trouble given that I'm likely to fiddle with prices and rates a bit anyway?
Play the game of Time! castle.chirpingmustard.com Hotdog Vending Supplier But what is this?

How did I miss that before? That seems to have come up from the Poetic Edda!

WRT the domain poll: not looking good.

@EternalDensity: Can't you just JSON.stringify the game state?

Ok. I have asked to join the facebook group. Since my facebook name is Philip Thomas, it shouldn't be too difficult to spot my request!

While I'm here I'll create a Summoning Circle for future blitzers: Blitzers can use this circle to Summon someone. Anyone they like. Unfortunately this Circle only works for Blitzers who are less than halfway through their Blitz. So, erm, we don't get to find out if I have succeeded in creating it for quite a while yet!

A picture of a circle would be helpful here. But I'll just ask a passing poster to put a picture of circle in their post- and that will be the actual Summoning Circle...
