ETA I should add a line to Newpixbots showing how many are active. Would be quite handy.

You could add a seawall. It lowers the amount of castles a wave destroys each ONG.
A dilgunnerang could increase the sandrate for Cuegan.
Same with grapevines.
Lucky could be an event, which lowers the sandrate for Cuegan unless you have researched PantherSalve.

ETA: It seems Helping Hand doesn't work. The sand/sec rate didn't change once I bought it. Save - F5- load didn't help.

OTTer dreams

Postby AluisioASG » Thu Sep 05, 2013 2:03 pm UTC

I'm having funny dreams (or still-image dreams). When I said I was going to take a nap a few days ago, I remember ucim
replying with “That's a wise decision” during that. And today, when I coma'd after saying chirpingmustard.com should be
active by the time I wake up, someone replied “It better be.” (or something to that effect).

Greetings from page 313 of 1441. Or 21.7% of the way through. I think I said 21.7% in my last post too, but that was actually a 21.66% that I rounded up, and this one is 21.72% that I rounded down. So progress!

Latent22 wrote:http://xkcd-time.wikia.com/wiki/Book_of_Time_Page_1

For now I've renamed Bible of Time to "Book of Time"

I've set up the first 10 pages ready for editing but only a few have anything filled in yet.

So this is a thing that actually happened, huh? I guess that explains what that one "I love the Book of Time" avatar is talking about. Looking at the first ten pages, I can see that there's really some delightfully meaningless writing being put into this thing.

Cueball: Do you smell beacon?

Megan: There is no way that anyone will try to look through Time.

On second thought, since pages nine and ten are still blank, maybe this isn't a thing that happened after all. Maybe that avatar person only just loved the IDEA of the Book of Time, even though that idea died on the vine after only eight pages.

Ah well. Sailor V. At least we'll always have beacon.

To tell you the truth HES, the reason I recognize the name "Box Hill" is by way of Richard Thompson - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. (If you want to see some fantastic guitar work, check this out.)
I take it the picture is at Box Hill. What's the structure in the center?

"Salomons Memorial viewpoint"; I would have taken the picture from there were it not for the aforementioned waspsnake. I'm not familiar with Richard Thompson, but thinking of it the hill is popular with the biking community and a quick google confirms they are one and the same.

I scraped the wiki for seeding purposes, but now resorted to manually looking for OTTifications. Scraping the thread really does not work with songs and poems and I did not yet come up with a clever heuristic to cover all types of other OTTifications. I strongly believe, that inventing such an algorithm and coding it would be more work than to actually look through the thread and entering the data by hand (even more so as I would not trust my algorithm in the first place and would end up looking through the thread anyway to catch mustard). I actually was hoping that others would use the Add OTTifications feature to help out, but so far I estimate only two or three OTTercomics have been added by someone else. I really have to work on that search function anytime soon now...

BTW: Fantastic newslides, Kieryn. I am not an artistic type at all (as y'all can probably tell by the rather homely appearance of my site) and find it really impressive how you can create a special mood with the colours in your slides and very subtle animations.

I just added my 2873 OTColorisation, the page said i should use geekwagon numbers so i entered 2878. But now it's in the database as mscha2878, geekwagon 2883. This is misleading.

Do not open until Newpage 1440

When you open this message I will have been gone for about 10 newpages. I left my nopixbit behind and it has ONG'd me with some recent (from your perspective) news.

Spoiler:
I hear that my "retrOTTification" of xkcd 481 was fairly well received; I'm glad! I had fun making it. And so it is decided -- we will keep doing such things. My latest work is below.

@BlitzGirl, @pelrigg and @lmjb1964 wished me well on my quest, which was very touching, thanks! :)

@lmjb1964 reports that it's hard to quote my post at OTT:1434:22 because when wrapped in a spoiler some mustardy stuff happens. I'll have to try a few experiments. I use rarely-used nestings, like (size) (img) and (i) tags inside a single (center) block, so that might the problem. I think you'd want to remove the (center) tags, my hunch is that's probably what chirps up the formatting.

nopixbot relayed concerns (on behalf of @Valarya) that I may have given up on the Nyan Cat. Alas, the Outside occasionally intrudes and I needed to drive somewhere. I couldn't even remember the tune after turning it off, so I doubt more Nyan will do much, though I'll give it a go when I reach your post. Thanks for the cupcakes, newpixbot is holding them for me until my arrival in your now-when (they'll be fresh, since they're frozen in Time).

On a related note*, shortly after beginning my Quest I started listening to 9 Beet Stretch, the recording of Beethoven's 9th symphony stretched out to 24 hours nopix. Links are here and here if you're interested. It's quite mesmerising and runs forever (the 1st movement starts at the same time of day every day). It's a nice soundtrack for Blitzing, very non-intrusive and soothing.

My travelogue for NP60-ish through NP114:

- o -

It was a lot of fun to watch how quickly the forum switched over to a community of creative people having fun with ideas. A few new words and the idea of an OTT religion were formed, then criticized by some others who didn't "get it". There followed a period in which people took the thread more (nay, too?) seriously (we must only talk about the comic!!!), and being a bit overwhelmed with how quickly the newpages appear.

I have started seeing participants who are gone for long enough to sleep (the word "coma" hasn't caught on yet) making a quick post, then trying their best to catch up and it can sometimes take 4 to 6 newpix (2 to 3 Outsider hours) to read it all. This is evidence that the seriousness of the participants is increasing, and the community is realizing (see OTT:115:5) that there are people who can contribute a lot but cannot accommodate a full-time participation in OTC/OTT into their lives. I know this eventually came to pass but am curious as to how it came about. This is the kind of suspense I can handle: I know the story turns out okay, but it may be messy, and that's okay.

Referencing this trend, I found a (partially written) script for an OTTification of xkcd 606 but apparently no-one ever finished or drew it. It was too good to pass up, so here ya go:

LATEST NEWPAGE
Image

In newpage 98, someone speculated about the idea of some or all of the M&C's world being two-dimensional, and linked to this page about a project that I was a part of, way back in 1980 when I was in high school! A.K.Dewdney's "Planiverse". I went to the page, and my design (for a 2-dimensional mechanical clock) is that dark rectangle at the top, though no-one would recognize it. It is really cool to run across links like this, and realize that others in the thread love the same stuff, which I think is what draws us all to xkcd in the first place.

As I said, the burst of creativity subsided as people got sharply focused on actually discussing the OTC, then having trouble with how ridiculous the ideas were getting (like the origin of the semencancerbabiesonice meme). But one really entertaining bit was a debate about AIs and the Algorithm, which began with @Kieryn's proof-of-concept of an automated sand castle animation.

Happily I have reached the post by @azule which includes the first usages of "blind post" referring to a missive like this one, and "in the future" referring to azule's afterwhen, which is now my own aforewhen: I am in my present seeing @azule's post from the past, from my perspective @azule is the blitzer. (Perhaps you see the utility of new words like aforewhen and afterwhen, which I'm glad to see others like. A word like "future" becomes ambiguous when blitzers read each other's blindposts.)

Apart from the signatures, there are little bits of creativity retro-edited into posts from the future. I have been reading the "Ancient text" writings by @edo (before xis/xer spoiler-sigging and falling-out with the community.) These seem to have been left for @BlitzGirl, and it will be fun to see where they lead.

That's all for now, (and by now I mean far in the distant yesterpix to all of you...) - mrob27

* Not a pun, I swear it! But if you feel the need BlitzGirl, you may punsaw me through the Reverse Chronotransponder or just punsaw nopixbot on my behalf.

† people like me.

- end transmission -

I love everything about this, mrob. Keep this stuff coming because it's the best Blitzing I've ever had the pleasure to read. Not to discourage the others, because I like all types of blitzing posts! ;)

All I get is a domain registrar landing page, in French. Maybe I'll have to wait for it to propagate to whatever DNS I'm pointing at.

Good point. It would be difficult to see a website that doesn't exist.

Molpy Up Early

Postby Eternal Density » Thu Sep 05, 2013 8:48 pm UTC

Various game responses: I can forsee Lucky causing a Cuegan debuff unless you research Panther Salve early. Seawall is a good wave buff name. I think grapevine will be either a higher level structure or a big boost.
Poles and crenellating have crossed my mind and I do expect to have molpy subtype upgrades though I had forgotten facebug.
Hmm SwiftKey remembers the word Facehugmolpyattackkittymurderbaconraptor, I wonder if that song reached the wiki.

Yeah all castle tools activate automatically on the ONG though Newpixbots have a delay before you get stuff and higher types don't give if they can't destroy their quota.

If you have the version with a save and load button, they work. For now you have to click them manually. No autosave or autoload.
I think that's all.
Oh, and yeah helping hand doesn't work for me either. Will fix...

ETA phew I bought cooperation 4 seconds before the ONG. That was close. This game has more time pressure than the other.

Outcast

Postby AluisioASG » Thu Sep 05, 2013 9:13 pm UTC

This place's slow and I'm sleepy. Have a song:
Spoiler:

It's my father's voice dreaming of
Scholars sailing off in the morning
For the water-proof lands
At the top of the world

His mind's been broken
His memories are fading into light
His friends have deserted
So I really wanted to see you tonight

The new ones aren't like the old
And decided to leave me alone
He'll die when he finds out I've been outcast from
His own place

His mind's been broken
His memories are fading into light
I'm all he has from them
And I really want to make him proud

The Outside calls me lowly
They want me to let them drown
I refuse but they find out
They're wrong but they go on with it

My mind's been broken
My actions are fading into darkness
I'm all he has from them
And I really don't want to make him sad

Yet it makes no difference to me
I'm an outcast, a mustard in their view
It's cold in these broken lands tonight
I'll not go to the Outside

Outcast, a mustard in the sea
It makes no difference to me
It's cold in these broken lands tonight
But I'll not go to the Outside

It's cold in these broken lands tonight
I'll not go to the Outside
I'll not go to the Outside
I'm going to the Outside
(Yankee, hotel, foxtrot…)

Kieryn wrote:Thanks Sciscitor - this is really neat! Are you manually checking for OTTfications? Using some scraping? The wiki?
Also - #newslide Enjoy!

Makes sense... I was thinking maybe you could detect poetry by looking for 4+ lines together with text that had similar length, 1st letter capitalization etc, but you are probably right about the accuracy and time issues. Good work!

Sciscitor wrote:BTW: Fantastic newslides, Kieryn. I am not an artistic type at all (as y'all can probably tell by the rather homely appearance of my site) and find it really impressive how you can create a special mood with the colours in your slides and very subtle animations.

Thanks! I am so happy people are enjoying the story and artwork... just wait to see what happens ;)

Side notes:

Did you take a look at the API and javascript stuff I mentioned?

Also I thought someone might have a go at doing some astronomy on the stars to determine the exact date during the summer of 1994. Nobody did though.

All you really need is on this slide which has accurate star positions and the "4 weeks" dialog really really narrows it down.
ETA: That bright reddish star below the moon, ought to be familiar... or ominously unfamiliar I guess. :)

Actually all of the slides with stars are accurate based on location, direction, date and time, and I'm basing all the landscapes on real imagery, so pretty accurate maps could be produced, if someone wanted to. Thanks Stellarium & Google Earth!

Yeah, you three do seem young. Not 14, but reckless twenties young. Yes, younger than me, unfortunately. I would love to be your age again. I still think I am but not all body parts and society agree with me. :( lol.

I don't drink hot beverages either. Hot cocoa, I guess, though.

Right there with you on "I still think I'm young but reality gets in the way." It sucks.
I never used to drink coffee, then a boyfriend a while back got me started, and now I'm hooked. Hm, think I need some right now, actually. And Santa Cruz is such a coffee town, it's easy to stay addicted.

BTW, I give my permission to be analyzed as well. I don't really try to make my online persona any different than my real one. Not sure whether that's a good thing or not. :) I even let slip that I'm a secret agent, so you pretty much know all about me.

So I moved Sciscitorward (though I'm leaving my location as-is because I still have my apartment there until I figure out how to do the paperwork to give it up, and I don't have an apartment anywhere else yet) instead of discovering flutterwingmolpybugs or even wingish connectome graphs, I've discovered a hotel in an industrial area (near my job where I have hardly any coding to do) where it's a struggle just to go buy food before the trains stop running, and instead of spending this Time in the hotel learning German and staying keught up and drawing things using my new tablet and reading the French version of Gödel, Escher, Bach, I'm baking c**kies (404MCpS.) Ch*rping c**kies! I hope to wean myself onto Castle ONGer. Though I did also rewatch the Back to the Future trilogy as research for a filk. Is that productive?

But never mind! I am in the present now! There have been some pretty neat things in here. And ZoomanSP, who is better at remembering and pointing out such things than I am, liked my ottifications. :) Also, just out of curiosity I read the first couple of posts on GLR's blag and noticed that he described things as 'neat' even back in 2006. Oh, and there are signs around here that say 'Bacon' on them because apparently that's the name of some kind of construction company. I have also spotted coffee, cancer (not actual cancer, just things to kill it), and Siemens.

Radiation comes in all colours (except maybe hooloovoo) because that's what colours are; the neat thing is that it's blue when things go faster than lightin that medium. That's fast, y'all. Apparently there's a demo reactor somewhere around here where people can go see that; I must figure out how to do that.

TL;DR: I'm still here; please don't throw me in the basement! I can't pronounce the safe word!

Um, so Helping Hand does work fine (I just tested it). Cuegans give a base rate of 0.6 and 0.2 extra with Helping Hand.
I believe I fixed the sand-tool-price-not-displaying-right-on-load issue (just one line :D) so I'll deploy that shortly. After I add a version number display...
ETA the original line was actually " We have no badges. In fact, we don't need badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges" yay for memetic mutation :P
ETA done, save and refresh! Now to do the other links in the top row...
