no speed OTTification from ED this Time

Postby Eternal Density » Mon Oct 21, 2013 4:22 am UTC

Not really a lot there to OTTify, off the top of my head. It's not like the OTC has much to do with autoplay and a person sitting at a computer isn't really anything special to work from.

So you say. I'm sure it will shortly manifest in some peculiar way.

Though I suppose the manifestation is not that peculiar, it's just you getting sucked into TVTropes again.

Edit, over 2 nopix later: Steambottle, why is it whenever I have something new to post, the OTT is completely silent? (Maybe it's my coma schedule...) I don't like double-posting, so I'll keep Waiting for it.

I might have submitted this an hour or two ago, filling that gap up there a bit, but I was coding...and oh, so close. I'm gonna call it "1 and a half" things to "fix" and it's ready! Not today. Coma time.

Sorry for not more comments than the below. Add me to someone else's so you may count their 1 as 2. Yeah, that won't work. :(

OTG: Glass Ceilings

Postby Flado » Mon Oct 21, 2013 11:03 am UTC

-- blindpost --
Hi again! I've enlisted some professional help over the wipend and can now confirm that 682 is indeed the smallest number of steps needed to break the glass ceilings. One surprise that popped up in the simulations was that there are states that are much harder to reach than that. However, I'm not going to name names for fear of putting the wrong ideas in the heads of OTGs evil spiritsfine programmers.
There is more to be said about this, but I'll let the responsible party de-lurk and post it if xey decide to do so. This, and the margins of this thread are too small for yada, yada, yada...

I'm sure it was posted before, but what exactly does "language density" mean? There are some crazy spikes since Time ended.

It is language diversity rating and it is a formula devised by me after long and intense research and development (ie. I made up a a vaguely mathematical looking line in python and moved some terms around til the result feeled about right). It is supposed to measure originality of the the posts by removing redundancy and counting points for new and unusual words and combinations thereof.

Enthusiasm is all that's really needed for one of the imaginary bands (or at least I hope so, I don't have any musical talent either...) We could probably add the list to the wiki; either as an addendum to another page or on its own.

Disclaimer: These are not to be confused with an unimaginary OTT band consisting of OTTers with actual musical talent.

Something fun but not too intrusive - I'm always leery of extracting and publicising social network data. But something that comes to mind is the difficulty of establishing links... it's easy enough when somebody is quoted, or their name is mentioned, but it's not always clear when somebody's name is abbreviated or referred to by their OTTish icon, and such mentions are often just as significant a reference as a quote is. These other ways of referring to people have developed over time; I wonder if their development could be traced to a good enough extent that they could be reliably used as references also. Somebody who is "popular" may end up dropping out of the analysis because they get referred to by initials (BG) or a nickname (yappo) or an icon (<image>).

Another interesting thing to look at is the genesis of OTTish. Is there a small subset of people who tend to popularize Ottish words, and whose nod is important to them being incorporated into the lexicon? (or are we indiscriminate about what words we glom onto?)

Is there a preferred network through which things spread? (for example, puns, new words, ideas, whatnot) Are there different preferred networks for different things?

What is the role of recognition on creative output?

Is there enough data to split posters into different groups? (long posts, short posts, posts that refer to other posts, posts that don't refer to anything on the thread, condiments...)

Just a few ideas. Dunno what the class is covering.

The Glass Ceiling logic is actually a slightly extended version of an actual physical puzzle/toy which I have lying around somewhere. I might video it some Time.

Ah, thanks. I'm currently coma-deprived and somehow mixed ED into your graph (sorry, ED).

Disclaimer: These are not to be confused with an unimaginary OTT band consisting of OTTers with actual musical talent.
I kinda guessed that's where the density came from :P
And yeah I was thinking "removing redundancy? how dare you!?"

The Beanies seem to like sitting on their roofs. They must be well-constructed.

It's great to see new ONGs again :D
Last nip I made a bit of progress with django, figuring out how to do some stuff with it and making some database tables to represent the locations of the next hotdog. Still a long way to go...

I'm sure this is related for some obscure reason. In any case it's amusing. Maybe GLR should othercomic it.

The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000.

But what is that in castles? We have plenty of those.

Beanie growth must slow down as they get older: Beanette and Amtoo's kids (Cuebean and Megbean) are old enough to walk, while Turtlebeaniegirl is still sitting on the roof with her turtlemolpy, apparently not a day older than she was when the Beantoo kids were conceived.

Maybe Turtlegirl is immortal, too. Maybe the beanie'd Beanies are the only mortal ones.
