Joust!

Postby Owijad » Thu Oct 25, 2007 8:04 pm UTC

I loved this game when I was younger.
Anyone remember it? It was an old arcade game where you were a knight on an ostrich flying around trying to kill other knights, and avoid the lava troll at the bottom.

Wiki wiki wiki!

By the way, in this game, when you're walking your mount will keep on walking whether or not you've got the directional button pushed, and at the same speed it was going when last you pushed it. Is there anyone who played it on a real arcade machine who can tell me if there's any good reason for that?
And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold,
But if you lose, the devil gets your sould!

I must have dumped $1000 into this game in the 80's. Good times...

I think the walking thing is just a part of the design to be honest, I rather liked that particular feature actualy.

I had it for my game boy along with defender/millipede/centipede played it LOTS, good times.

I've yet to play a better game than Joust.

Um because when you tell an animal you're riding to go the animal decides that it's going and your own legs don't move it?
So like to be an analogy your own thumb doesn't tell your mount to move.

Not like a car where yes your foot is definitely deciding that the car moves.

I dunno. As a game made in '82 about a flying ostrich battling knights and running from pterodactyls, I feel like realism wasn't the driving force on that decision. But in any case, I think "I liked that feature" is as good of an explanation as I need.

Stupid walking noises. Everytime I play that game, I'm told I spend the entire time saying "Bip bip bip bip bip bip bip bip bip whoosh.... whoosh... whoosh... whoosh... bip bip bip bip bip bip bip bip bip."

I did too. Apparently, it's possible to kill the pterodactyl, but I've only killed it once, and that was kind of a fluke...

EDIT: AHA! That's how! Thank you, Wikipedia!
