I'm going to be in San Francisco June 6-11, and would love to see any OTTers who could come for a visit. I'll be pm'ing with lmjb1964 about when and where - throw one of us a line if you'd like to try to coordinate :)

*ggh might get the reference, not sure about anyOTTer else ;)

ETA: should I also post an invite in the Meetups thread? I began one so that basementees might see it, but the message started to look obnoxiously exclusive and now I'm not sure. :|

Ch*rping happy everyone liked the little Pfffth hotdog :).

ggh wrote:ETA2: OMR, KayZ, that is funny! What determines if you get the PFFFTH or not?

It has a bit of a cooldown, Cueball needs to catch a breath every now and then. Other than that you only get the Pfffth if the mouse button is pressed.

yappobiscuits wrote:Someone now needs to make "Pfffthy Cue" - a Flappy Bird version of this.

Oh noo, don't tempt me. You'd probably want it with cool stuff like boosts and badges like all those other OTT hotdogs. I never wanted to do a Flappy Bird clone.. but is it a clone if it's moving to the left instead of the right, right? damn you OTTer!!!

mrob27 wrote:I've been landing his head on things. If you land on top of the scaffold platform, the head will eventually fall through, then you're trapped inside the scaffold-space (but you can get back out). (Edit: Yep, that's what everyone else has been doing too :D )

Only did rudimentary collision detection. But that works pretty well for kinda realistic 2.5D physics where you sometimes can go behind an object ;).

I'd prefer not to use the wildcard variant of that header, though, so you'll either need to ask mrob27 to add a wildcard CORS header to his version, or install AUTOMOME locally (setting up Apache and Python 3 locally should be relatively easy).

Oh sorry, I didn't mention that itch.io hosts the uploaded game on commondatastorage.googleapis.com, so that would be required (and this would probably be too broad). But with the solution pointed out by mrob27 I won't need that anymore. No more reason for anyone to add the header :).

mrob27 wrote:If you want to run it "locally", that means running something that works even when you have no Internet access.

Must have expressed myself epsilonish. What I meant was, only while it's in development, it runs on 127.0.0.1. Otherwise in the seaish internet.

mrob27 wrote:But this makes me realize, there's a much better solution for @KayZ, provided xe can run JavaScript alongside the existing Dart code: How about using @azule's OTTOMOME code, which is essentially a re-implementation of mine, but in JavaScript and already running and working? Its snowclone templates use the same format as mine, so if you want the non-xkcd memes, you can grab my file and pick and choose which memes you keep.

Yep, this should work. Thanks for pointing it out. Didn't take a look at the source when I was on azules page. Now I just have to hope that I do not get distracted by another hotdog like.. something something Pfffthy Cue......

I was just pondering stereotypes the other day, in regards to raptors. Little Bear almost always ends up having his nap in the car, so I'll park in some shady or wind-protected spot for an hour, and I generally have some food to toss out for the crows. Occasionally the searaptors will be around and try to grab the food, but the crows have learned that I'll throw something bright like papaya in the middle of the gulls, then send the food the crows actually like in another direction, so they wait on the outskirts of the gull-mob for the good stuff. I love the crows and really dislike the gulls, and I was wondering if that's justified or outright prejudice.
I decided it's justified - the gulls will scrabble and squabble over anything, while the crows will take their bit and hop out of the way. They also respond when I try to caw at them, but I think they're probably laughing at me :D

BLUENHANCE

Postby balthasar_s » Fri May 23, 2014 9:31 pm UTC

So I made the Bluenhancement software.
It can be downloaded from here:
http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info/pro/bluenh/
or here:
svn://bicyclesonthemoon.info/bluenh (use "e" for read-only login and password)

It requires the "Dev Image Library" library (aka. libdevil) to run.
It's a command-line program it takes 8 parameters: input file, output file, and 6 numbers from 0 to 255.
I found these values to work well:

Code: Select all

./bluenh inpix.png outpix.png 0 34 41 0 40 255

Output:
Image
1. We can see what is radioactive and what not.
2. The non-radioactive part doesn't lose quality.
3. Everything inside of bluecave is visible.
4. When everything is completely in grayscale the enhancement is completely the same as the input.

Now we can automatically enhance.
Give me some more time and I'll make it work online, like the NewpixbOTTiffication.

Explanation of the 6 numbers - that's how the enhancement is applied to the channel with the highest value:
Image
(ETA: I still have to explain what it does to other channels after the update)

ONE PROBLEM:
dnsdynamic.org is having DNS mustard now. dnsd.info domains are not working. My server may not be accessible.
So, the content of the files are included here:
Spoiler:
EDIT: this is the first version. It was updated later.

UNIX-speak is a bit like Ottish in that respect; it's completely incomprehensible to those who don't know the jargon. An example (true story): I dd'ed /dev/zero to a file and formatted it as EXT4 using mke2fs. I then debootstrapped Wheezy-armhf onto it, pushed it onto my rooted Android phone using adb, and wrote a script to losetup the image, mount the virtual block device, and chroot into it. I then used APT to install a full GNU toolchain, among other things, so I can clone some git repos and hack FLOSS. Also handy: I have Texlive and Vim, so I can do my homework (for which I use LaTeX and git) and latexmk it into PDF, all from my phone.

Looks treeish! At a glance, the code looks like plain C instead of C++, though -- so why not treat it as such (by saving with a .c extension and using gcc instead of g++)?

It's a quick modification of the NewpixbOTTification code. Which is a .cpp. But it doesn't use anything C++ specific either. But at the beginning it was supposed to.

Battling an influx of micromolps... it's been back and forth but I'm not up to my usual, so this will have to do.

Yes, I did a few different kinds of enhancements, but finally settled on expanding the gamma ("curves" in GIMP) of the blue channel. I suppose I could have been fancier, but that might have set a standard. :) Primarily I wanted to see what was happening in the cave, and to see the different levels of blue clearly.

AluisioASG wrote:'I don't know what ‘short’ and ‘long’ mean anymore.
Short is like the beginning of Time. Long is like a few wips into it.

In English, it has nothing to do with length, and is perhaps best done by example, since there are so many different pronounciations of English vowels, many inhereted from the languages we stole the words from

long a: Wave, cave (very similar)
short a: Smart, hat, father. (they are different sounds, but are all "short")

long e: Neat, feet, street
short e: Epsilon, left.
(The schwa is considered a short e, and is pronounced sort of like "uh" with no emphasis)

long i: File, item, (which also features a schwa), blind
short i: Lift, pilfer (also featuring a schwa), blitz

long o: Bowl, stove
short o: long (ironically), short, form.

long oo: Loose, food.
short oo: book, cook, foot.

Interestingly, lose and loose have the same vowel sound, it's the consonent ('s') that is different.
Lose (fail to find) has a soft s (almost a z)
Loose (not tight) has a hard s.

long u: Stupid, rule, fuel, (different sounds, both "long"),
short u: Dumb, club, funny.

In short (no vitssagenbait intended), a long vowel has more of a smooth, silky feel, and a short vowel kinda terminates in an 'h' sound, eh?

In Spanish each letter has its own sound, with few exeptions. There are no "long" or "short" vowels that I'm aware of.
In Italian, I don't know about the vowels, but double consonents are "long"... they are not pronounced so much as caressed.

AluisioASG wrote:Does the ‘a’ merge with the ‘e’?
No, the 'e' is "long". The 'a' is silent, existing solely to make spelling more interesting and to make the 'e' long. (the rule, which isn't always followed, is that a vowel that is not a part of a dipthong, that is followed by a vowel or by a consonant which is followed by a vowel, is long, else it is short.

KayZ wrote:Ch*rping happy everyone liked the little Pfffth hotdog :).
I certainly did. A two person hotdog comes to mind, where somebody else mans the trebuchet.

[quote="KayZ"It has a bit of a cooldown, Cueball needs to catch a breath every now and then. Other than that you only get the Pfffth if the mouse button is pressed.[/quote]If you click and hold and then move out of the pic, the pffft stays on. You can still steer it by moving the mouse.

Click in the pic to turn it off.

And now I must micromolpy down.

Neat, Bluethasar! And perfect Timing! I was just thinking of writing up a little bash script to ENHANCE and make animated gifs of arbitrary frame sequences. Now all I have to do is write it to grab the requested frames, run them through bluenh and then merge them into a gif.

And I was thoroughly ninja'd due to some organized sand mustard and work things interrupting my OTTing. Image

That makes sense. :)

That reminds me. I have a Nokia N900 and N91 sitting around that I need to figure out something to do with (or get rid of if I can't). If you guys can think of some interesting OT(C/T)ish ways to put them to use that a somewhat proficient Linux user looking to learn some programming skills2 could accomplish, it would be much appreciated. Or if anymolpy can think of a really awesomeful way to use one that I couldn't do myself, I may be willing to donate it to the task.

1Ostensibly they're cell phones, but they run full desktop versions of Linux making them much more hackable3 than almost any android or iOS device.
2I can already write "hello world" in both bash and python!!4
3in the sense of being easy to make it do whatever the user wants, not that it has poor security.
4and I followed along with Link's Linux ramblings with only a slight stumble on "losetup"
