I updated the bluenhancement.
Also, I think it's possible to find better default values than these used now.

"silly molpy" mode:
I have this feeling very often when working on something that includes drawing, writing or telling something. And being aware of it doesn ot stop me from havin it. But usually some waiting helps.
After posting the "What have you done to me, Time" my first thought was "Now I can't show up in the thread anymore" :)
I will continue to work on it.

ETA: @BlitzGirl: The VY-tron flag in the second boomdeyada, where did it come from?

It's amazing how much a few solar panels can do. I once lived in a rented house that had a solar-assisted water heater. Even in winter and with five people in the house, we rarely had to use the gas part of the system. Solar ovens are also really Neat :) I wish I could convince my Tim that skycircle panels would be a useful thing to add to our house; if we ever build our own I'm going to insist on having them.

Well, alright Waiters -- let's go!!!

Oh, it's been getting so hard,
Waiting when there's so much more to see, aha
My screen is getting so strange,
I won't remember everything I read

Oh, there's a post with a graph
as a matter of fact, with colors as red as the sun
and before I recover, I come to another --
it blurs into the previous one

Oh yeah, posts come like lightning
Everybody is typing
Plus there's music and and photos
and bad puns and inuendos
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

And the girl with hats says
"my queue is stacked" and I'm stuck in a ketchup blitz
And the gif that's annoying needs
to have a warning -- it'll wreck your ketchup blitz!

Ketchup Blitz
Ketchup Blitz
Ketchup Blitz
Ketchup Blitz

Oh, I trying to be ketchup'd
But there's nothing I can do
except keep reading over
posts from the past until I am through, aha

Now the post with the graph's
been quoted with a laugh, and everyone seems to try
to newpic on the gong, or post a cool song --
I'll be ten pages behind 'til I die!

Oh yeah, it seems electric
and frantically hectic,
Because the more I keep reading,
Still the future's receding!

And the girl with hats says
"my queue is stacked" and I'm stuck in a ketchup blitz
And the gif that's annoying needs
to have a warning -- it'll wreck your ketchup blitz!

Ketchup Blitz

It's, it's, a Ketchup Blitz
It's, it's, a Ketchup Blitz
It's, it's, a Ketchup Blitz
It's, it's, a Ketchup Blitz
It's a Ketchup Blitz!!!

This has permanently modified this song for me. Every time I hear it now, I'll be mentally changing the lyrics. I love it :D

That should revive your spirits for a while. :-)

This prods me into asking a question, for the Graphmeisters and those who are statistically-minded... As of the end of this post, this one right here asking the question, precisely how many "raw" words comprise the OTT? By this I mean: Chop out all quotes (since they're words that have been worded before, so they shouldn't doubleplus1 count), items within "url" tags, etc. If the OTT was a story, play, or similar, how many words would it consist of?

Dare anyone calculate such a dread number?

More tumble weed time it seems like!

Personally, I've been stuck ketching-up... - errm... ketchupping? For various reasons, the long wipend being one of them, I've been rather restricted in my usual OTT reading time on a large Outside multi-person carrying vehicle, so that's why it's taken me so long to post again. Trying to move this kayak forwards in these circumstances is like paddling through mud...

Couple of shout-outs for y'all. Mrob - I'm so glad that one of my thoughts has been immortalised as a Q04B boost! I am (very) slowly but steadily working my way forward, and whilst I am still making backup string copies of the board every so often, I've not had to go back to them thanks to the very useful Cueless-Snake! pair of boosts! On the topic of boosts as well, I've not managed to gain both the Cueless and Wait For It! boosts completely by accident. In both cases, I took a few random moves whilst waiting for code to compile (I'm a software engineer - code-compilation takes up most of my day!), then went back to work, only to look at my Q04B window and see the relevant message had appeared!

Ummm... there was definitely another something I wanted to say... blast this short memory. Oh well, thanks for the continued amusement. The quietness of this wip suggests that there are certain members without which the needle-pulled thing would die a slow and painful death I suspect.

On the recent Silent ONGs - has anyone noticed that what I presume to be Dead-Bean's hat is still sat in perfect shape to the left of the cairn. As beanies are soft, this surely can't be a beanie at all, but must rather be a hard hat or something. I therefore propose that we stop calling the Beanies that, and instead call them Hard Hatters! By the way, did you ever speculate as to why the Beanies all wear hats? I was still lost in the depths of Time when they appeared.

Also new Other Comic reminder.

A Miracle - Lucky Leaps

Postby ucim » Fri May 30, 2014 1:32 pm UTC

So I was praying a few minutes ago, using the Lucky prayer wheels, and despite what the Good Book says about Lucky only going left, right, and down, I saw a miracle! The entire board went UP, a cueball dropped in the middle of the bottom row, and the board went down again.

The other day, I had to clear my cache and cookies (because Google no longer lets me log in to youtube in order to correct it's "error" of putting me on the youtube announcement lists, as if I want to know what Google wants me to watch!). That pulled all the placeholders out of my missal. I keep a set of save strings so it was no biggie, but be warned!

And the thread isn't slow... it's paused in reverence out of respect for our deceased Beanie.

Ketchup, pgs 1959-60:

BlueCrab wrote:I was just pondering stereotypes the other day, in regards to raptors. Little Bear almost always ends up having his nap in the car, so I'll park in some shady or wind-protected spot for an hour, and I generally have some food to toss out for the crows. Occasionally the searaptors will be around and try to grab the food, but the crows have learned that I'll throw something bright like papaya in the middle of the gulls, then send the food the crows actually like in another direction, so they wait on the outskirts of the gull-mob for the good stuff. I love the crows and really dislike the gulls, and I was wondering if that's justified or outright prejudice.
I decided it's justified - the gulls will scrabble and squabble over anything, while the crows will take their bit and hop out of the way. They also respond when I try to caw at them, but I think they're probably laughing at me :D

Maude, from my favorite movie Harold and Maude wrote:Dreyfus once wrote from Devil's Island that he would see the most glorious birds. Many years later in Brittany he realized they had only been seagulls... For me they will always be - *glorious* birds.

I think of that when I see seagulls flying. I've heard people refer to them as "ratmolpies of the sea," and their depiction in Finding Nemo is pretty accurate ("Mine! Mine! Mine!) but they are beautiful when they're flying.

An example (true story): I dd'ed /dev/zero to a file and formatted it as EXT4 using mke2fs. I then debootstrapped Wheezy-armhf onto it, pushed it onto my rooted Android phone using adb, and wrote a script to losetup the image, mount the virtual block device, and chroot into it. I then used APT to install a full GNU toolchain, among other things, so I can clone some git repos and hack FLOSS. Also handy: I have Texlive and Vim, so I can do my homework (for which I use LaTeX and git) and latexmk it into PDF, all from my phone.

haha, oh yeah, I did that too!! *whispers to another OTTer* What the ch*rp did he say?

Actually, I learned UNIX when I first came to California and was working at a UNIX computer company. Even wrote my first thesis using--is it ve? But it's been so long now that I don't remember things, and of course I'm sure there's new stuff now. So, I think chroot means "change root," but the rest is gibberish.

No, that's all right, already fixed it for you, no need to do anything at all! Please don't ‘fix’ it. Please?

BWAHAHAHAHAHA oh, ok. :)

Is this one of those contests where you try to spot the difference? Because I don't see any difference between the second and third images.

ZoomanSP wrote:Recently, I noticed something: When Cuegan arrived at the river3, they seemed to shrink when they sat down to drink and refill their dilgunnerangs (cf. here and here). Back then, we didn't seem to notice it, according to a quick mini-blitz of the OTT during the respective longpix. There might be several explanations:

  • The camera zoomed out a litttle, and the riverbank happend to change exactly in the way that it looks identical in the zoomed-out view, although we see a bigger part of the landscape now.
  • It's a first hint towards Expando.
  • Spoiler:
It can't be... mustard, can it?

Heresy! *pelts with stale candies* I blame Expando.

yappobiscuits wrote:Must be where Expando gets his expandy powers. He sucks size from others. Whenever anyone shrinks slightly, Expando expands a little more.

Ah, yappo has the explanation.

balthasar_s wrote:The bluenhancement software works now online too!
It's here:

But until dnsd.info starts working again I'll use a redundant URL:
http://1190-botm.dnsdynamic.com/pro/bluenh/bluenh.htm
Enjoy!

Yay, thanks for the enhanceability! Now I don't have to depend on the kindness of OTTers to do enhancements, although I'm in the past for now so they'll all be enhanced when I get there.

I think the first two are static attachments, and the third links to my dropbox. They are currently the same, but I have a history of sneaky edits.

(If I didn't have psu mustard on my STA and boot sector mustard on my RTA, I'd be mean and change a pixel or two. Not happening on my MTA.)

Some stuff I meant to mention in my earlier post:

azule wrote:
lmjb wrote:My meowlpy has learned words too. I mean, she understands them. She may be trying to speak them, since she's pretty vocal, but she hasn't quite mastered it.
Babies, too. Mine is saying "KH" for kitty. That's right, no vowels present and not "K". I still don't know what "GAH!" means (always yelled and short), but that's the go to word right now. This babymolp? is very vocal right now. (Yeah, I used your quote as an excuse. Sorry. I hope you like being used for the purpose of baby cuteness. ;))

lmjb1964 wrote:I yelled, "Dixie!" and she did turn her head ever so slightly--further away from me. Little brat.
My meowlpies actually do perk up and sometimes look. Sorry that yours are giving you a hard time. lol.

lmjb wrote:Image
Don't answer, but how did you do that? 'Cause I see these circles on the sides. I guess that's related to, what did you say, Microsoft Slide Maker (sorry)?
I like how Cue says "how big" and he's really big and Megan says "I don't know" while she doesn't look at him (to see how big he is).

I'm always happy to be used for the purpose of baby cuteness! GAH!

Dixie actually does respond to a lot of things I say, and sometimes comes when called. But then other times she decides to be more cat-like and act like a little princess. A cute, furry little princess.

And ch*rp! I didn't notice the little circles on that image. I did it in PowerPoint. That's what y'all use for graphics, right? And yes, that was the joke I was going for. Glad you liked it!

Forgot to say hi to Mr. Moriarty and SonicSpin!

And I saw a comment from--Zooman, I think? that I just missed posting on page 1964. All I can say is: Ch*rp! Ch*rping ch*rp! Wish I had been paying attention. Oh well, I guess the world will go on, somehow.

And thanks for the explanation about static vs. non-static images, Mr. Hamply. I thought that might be the case.

SchizoBlitz Progress: 1608/1758

Postby macraw83 » Fri May 30, 2014 10:39 pm UTC

SchizoBlitz Report #13

This report is brought to you by the number 150.

Been a little over a wip since my last report, but I have actually made some progress this time (about 50NP worth, at my count).

I'm really liking the idea of wipend puzzles. I like the fact that they're chronicled on the Wiki even more, since that means I can go back and do them at my leisure after my Blitz. I have been double-checking the list the last few dozen NP, to ensure that the Wiki isn't missing any, and so far it has been good. Except for ED's "Seven OTTish Words" game from NP1605-1606, so I did those to the best of my ability (though I'm apparently not very good, there were a couple where I could only figure out about half).

Pelrigg came back on NP1600, and came up with a fun idea:
pelrigg wrote:Thanks for the welcome back BlitzGirl and yappo.
And thanks to Aluisio for the lion cake.

[snip]

One other thing my research lead me to. I wanted to find out how long it took me to get out of mod-queue by comparing the time-stamp of my 'first-post' (as listed on the page) vs. the time-stamp of the e-mail I got telling me I was published.
The fun part of going back to that page (NP 437 - Heretic date: Sun Apr 28, 2013) was the "Roll Call" of TimeWaiters on that page (In order of 1st post on page [with multiples noted] (bonuses: pope & goat; who got the "Ongs" and their phraseOng; and a buffyhat.))

Just for fun: Do a "Roll Call" for the page with your first post to the OTT. (whether that was your first post to xkcd-fora or just to the OTT.) It might be kind of fun.

I decided to go make my firstpost-page Roll Call for NP49, and was quite delighted by the results:

mscha's first post on the page said "I can't spot a pixel different between the 18:30 and 19:00 (UTC) images. The contents of the files are different, though." Smith61, with his first (and to date only) post was the first to chime in and say that there was a single pixel change, but nobody saw it due to firstpost moderation delay. mdistancerunner was the first non-moderation-delayed post that pointed out the single-pixel change, followed by a bit of discussion about a few random things, and then riverssong goated the page with quite possibly the most famous quote of the OTT:
riverssong wrote:
I WAITED A HALF HOUR FOR ONE DARKENING PIXEL.

In the aftermath of this, others started sharing their first-page Roll Calls. And, somewhat coincidentally, HES went back and edited his firstpost just one wip ago. I made yappo's Roll Call with a relatively inane post about avoiding aubron's site due to spoilers. Even though that was back when I was in the Present. And also ChronosDragon's, with a post about potentially starting the "newpix" page on Wikipedia.

Oh, and finally, I found this fancy new hat for my catvatar, and another one for my catvatar's hat! What do you xuys think?

I'm here... I'm reading... I'm just busy playing a little ping pong with entropy and losing badly.

I have things to say. I can't remember what they are. Except for: thanks, Sciscitor, for the solar update! I'm sure I'll have more questions later....
