You think that's hard, try distinguishing between "cot" and "caught" without turning one or the other of them into either "cat" or "coat".

(To my ear "cot" and "caught" both have the same vowel as "cough", while "cuff", which rhymes with "enough", has the same vowel as "cut").

To me "cot", "cut" and "cart" have for all intensive porpoises the same vowel sound... so disregarding vowel length the difference between "cot" and "caught" is the difference between "cart" and "court".

Time for a "Why AT&T is the shittiest company ever!" rant!

Monday:
Come home from work, internet is down, determine signal isn't making it to the house, call AT&T, sit on the line for 30 mins, going through their automated service where it tells me to turn off the router, my computer, etc. before I can get to a human, who after all that says "oh. my screen says I should send a tech. I'll schedule the visit for tuesday 10am, you don't need to be home, it's an outside visit." Awesome. It'll be all fixed by the time I get home.

Tuesday:
Get home from work, still not working. Call AT&T, go though the same 30 min automated service in order to get to a human.
phone drone: "My computer here says that your repair is scheduled for wendsday"
Me: "Did it get pushed back? I was told the appointment was today."
phone drone: "Nope, computer says it was always scheduled for wendsday between the hours of 8am and 8pm"
Me: "And this is an outside call right? I can't take the day off work, I don't have to be home?"
phone drone: "Correct, you won't need to be home"
Grumble.

Wendsday:
Recieve a call at work at 3:45pm.
Tech: "um, yeah so i'm here at your place, is anyone home to let me under the house?"
Me: "wait, what? I was told this would be an outside call?"
Tech: "nope. I need to get under the house, says right on my order"
Me: "well I can't take off work, I guess I will call and reschedule"
(note: i live in an appartment complex with a key-d access to under the house, which is a difficult thing to achieve, as you need to coordinate with the manger, who lives on the other side of the bay)
So in the afternoon I call and re-schedule with AT&T (same 30 min autoprompt) to have them show up between 4pm and 8pm Thursday. I work with the manager, and have a key now, so I can get down there, even though AT&T tells me again that I don't need to be home.

Thursday:
8pm rolls around and no word. I call AT&T (again with the 30 min autoprompt). They claim that they told the contractor to show up, but the contractor doens't have me on the books for an appointment. I'm a tad upset, this is really wearing on my nerves. AT&T schedules the appointment for friday, I can get my girlfriend to hang around the house, but she can't get there until after noon. AT&T assures me that the appointment is between 12-4pm, and says again that I don't need anyone there and not to worry about it.

Friday:
I get a call at work at 10am. It's the tech (different one though)
Tech: "Um, yeah, so I'm here at the place, is anyone home to let me under the house?"
Me: "Are you serious? I was told this was an outside call, and that it woulnt' be until noon at the earliest"
Tech: "Notebook here says inside call, and to get there between 8am and 8pm"
Me: "Well I have someone on the way, but she won't be there untill 11:30am at the earliest"
Tech: "more than an hour? Well, I'm going to have to pass up this appointment, I hope someone will have some extra time today to maybe visit your house. good luck." -he hangs up-

Now I'm sitting at work, quite pissed. What in the fuck AT&T, how horribly inadaquate can they be at their job? If I don't get it fixed today, I'm going to have to wait untill monday. And clearly they are all a bunch of slobbering idiots, I now need to take the time off work and call AT&T again, explain to them what's going on, and file a direct complant, pretty much demanding that they fix the shit they said they would fix on tuesday. If there was a better option I'd take it, but this is the problem with the phone/internet companies, there is no other choice so they feel that they can do this shitty of a job, and I'll still have to sit down and take it.

Grumble.

A+ rant, would read again.

So, the whole thing about needing to get access to something you didn't think you'd need access to I understand. Determining that remotely and not telling the client I don't understand. The repeated fuckups I continue to not understand.

Assuming the techs aren't lying - and as they're usually all contracted out and don't give a damn one way or another, and given what the tech is telling you on the phone - again, not like the tech actually cares and has no problem saying "Don't schedule until after noon"...

I can only conclude there's some middle-man at AT&T deciding to make things more "efficient" by rescheduling and rearranging orders and then not telling anyone else.

I didn't like AT&T when it came to my wireless service, but I didn't mind AT&T when it came to home internet (U-Verse).

We only have two internet/television providers here in Honolulu: Oceanic Time Warner Cable and Hawaiian Telcom (similar to AT&T U-Verse). I found out that I can only get service from the former and not the latter at my new condo. The whole looming merger thing with Comcast worries me.

Also, update on the AT&T appointment, they fixed the problem. turns out some moronic twat of a tech was at the house on monday (the day my internet went out) fixing another tenent's connection (I'm in a complex). The tech accidently Cut my phone lines which caused my internet to go out.

I swear sometimes I want to stab everyone responsible for this in the face.

Because AT&T doesn't hook you up or fix your shit or do anything other than pay a guy. Andy's Contracting is who does it, and AT&T pays them.

Andy's Contracting has five employees and tries to do as many jobs as they can in a day. Andy's Contracting does not get much leeway in saying "No". Or, rather, Andy's Contracting can say "No, not today" all it wants - it just means AT&T will stop hiring them.

So Andy's Wiring is trying to do the 30 jobs in your area today. Which isn't bad, as that does only work out to six jobs each. For a lot of jobs, it's a nice in-out, plug this here, run this there, less than an hour and you're on to the next job. Aside from the 35 minutes of paperwork and phonecalls for every single job, mind you.

However, they also get terrible jobs. Jobs that no sane person would try to do without three people, 5,000 feet of wiring, a crane and 5 hours. But they don't have that, they have Carl. So Carl does the best he can and it takes him 8 hours to do it.

So instead of getting to you at 10am like he was expecting, he gets to you at 4pm. For your "9 to 6" window.

Don't get me wrong - the entire system is rigged so that AT&T makes money no matter what. That 8 hour job? AT&T's only paying for 5 hours as that's what their techs said it should take to do it. Their techs just neglected to mention the full scope. Probably because they were too busy, mucking around with people's orders and changing appointment times and job scopes.

That's true, but it doesn't mean it's the only way to do things. I've had customer service from telecom providers in both the UK and Korea before where they gave me a 2 hour window to expect the engineer (and they arrived within that window). You don't need that much more slack in the system to narrow down appointment times to 'a couple of hours' rather than 'all day' in most cases. The service for telecoms companies in Korea is pretty amazing: appointments are normally available either same day or next day, and also, as soon as you book one you get a text message from the company with an ID photo of your assigned engineer and details of the appointment.

If we're ranting about ISPs: I requested internet in my new apartment on April 30th. It is scheduled to be delivered on July 6th.

When I moved into my new apartment, I figured I wanted fiber. My neighbors have fiber, but apparent the previous owner opted out when the neighborhood was wired up (fucker). So turns out they can hook me up, for free even, but it apparently takes over 2 months. In the meantime I could get internet via VDSL (telephone wires), which could be done in about 2 weeks. Ok, well, that sounded acceptable. VDSL is a bit slow, but acceptable for a month or two. And two weeks to install that sounds long, but I was busy moving anyway, so fine. So far so good.

So a guy from my ISP came over, a few days before the 2 week deadline actually, and hooked me up, and lo and behold, it didn't work. "I can't find a signal, I'll have them send over a mechanic tomorrow". The next day the mechanic arrived: "Yeah there doesn't seem to be a signal. In fact I only measure a cable length of 50 meters, while it should be near a kilometer. I'm going to have to call in a specialized team". Uhoh. So the next day the specialized team arrived, and they quickly confirmed something was wrong. Finding out what took a bit longer, but in the end it turned out that there is a cable running from my apartment into the wall, going down, and there is a cable running from the ground into the wall, going up.... but it's not the same cable. My apartment was renovated 2 years ago, and it turns out it was renovated by idiots, who hooked up a random, long discarded phone cable from the 60s, instead of the one actually in use.

"Well, we can fix that, but we're going to have to lay an entirely new cable from the neighborhood switchboard. We need permits and licenses for that, so this will take probably around 2 months".

Fuck.

Ok so getting VDSL temporary makes no sense, it if takes as long to fix as getting fibre in the first place takes. My ISP agreed, and cancelled that subscription free of charge. Their suggested alternative was a USB wireless modem with a wireless subscription. Ok, that sucks, but I'll take it. The speed is wireless is actually quite decent, but it has a 2 GB datalimit, so yeah, that sucks.

So far the service of my ISP has been nothing but stellar, and the problems not their fault. But this is where things start getting truly weird. They had apparently made 2 customer IDs for me, because I had 2 subscriptions (the VDSL and the fibre one). The new wireless subscription was apparently booked under my VDSL customer ID, which was subsequently cancelled. No doubt a few more things went wrong as well.

As a result I now have the USD wireless modem, despite never getting charged for one. They sent me not one, but three sim cards for it, only 1 of which works, and it has a 200 MB limit, not 2 GB. Stranger still, I now get all communication from them in 2-fold. Except for a bill I got in 4-fold. And this bill was a for a negative amount. They also sent me a box to return their router back to them, then the very next day sent me an identical new router.

So everything is completely fucked up, and I have no idea if I'll ever get internet, but somehow my ISP is paying me instead of the other way around... so... yeah.

I advise you to set aside an hour or two and call them up.

Because otherwise you (probably) aren't going to get anything from them. UserID1 is cancelled, UserID2 doesn't have any services listed, no Fiber for you.

So, I realized that if I keep living the way I do (i.e. zero exercise and infinity junk food) I'm probably not going to live past 35. It's been way too goddam hot around here to actually go outside, so I figure a jump rope is a nice easy, convenient way to get some cardio. First jump, I roll my ankle, and now I'm on vicodin, a cane and a support wrap for the next week. See kids, ambition leads to nothing but trouble.

Why did I bring my washer and dryer to Hawaii? Why am I so stupid?

I removed the existing washer and dryer and stored them elsewhere in the apartment. I spent three hours prepping the dryer to be stacked on top of the washer, moving the heavy-ass washer over to the faucets and hooking them up, and then stacking the not-as-heavy-as-the-washer-but-still-fucking-heavy dryer on top of the washer... only to discover that the dryer has a four-prong plug and the outlet is an older three-prong outlet.

I CANNOT WIN FOR LOSING.

Four prongs? What's the fourth for? Here (Australia) three-prong outlets are standard (devices have either two or three prongs).

This. I hate it when stuff doesn't match up like that.

Spoiler for unsolicited advice:
Spoiler:
I was going to say 'adapters are your friend', but apparently they don't exist for this, so I'll instead link to this article, which a) taught me that there are no adapters, and b) explains how to change the cord for a 3-prong one.
Hope this helps.

Edit: @yurell, it looks like it's a second earth wire, presumably to a separate (local?) earth from the regular, shared earth.

Caveat to all the above - I am not an electrician.

It's to allow for two different voltages: 120V and 240V.

Yeah, an adapter would be highly dangerous. I'm going to go to Home Depot over the weekend and look for a 3-prong cord and switch them out.

A little research reveals that I'm wrong.
It's to allow for two, 180°-phase-opposed line wires so you can draw both L-N (100/120V) or L-L (200/240V) from the same socket.

That's actually a very neat design.

Yeah, it's pretty much required in residences built after 2000. My apartment in Biloxi was fairly new, so it had the four-prong outlet, but my current building here in Honolulu was built in 1971.

Why are there two different sets of voltages? I'm very used to just having the one option (240V).

Because US standard is 100/120 V, but some appliances (clothes dryers are a big one, aircons are another) really need to run at 200/240. The main reason, as I understand it, is because you get more power with the same current at a higher voltage (P=VA).

Australia, like the UK if I remember correctly, chose to have 240 V as the standard power, so there's no need there to have special sockets to allow for a lower-than-standard voltage.

120 will give you a jolt, 240 will kill you. It's a safety issue. Little kids poking about and the like. I'm sure it has saved many a life.

As someone who has gotten a 240 jolt before (In a construction class), it certainly does suck lots but I didn't die.

I've always thought that it's not the voltage that gets you but the current. Could be wrong.

It depends, but yeah, significant current will be more likely to kill you/do more damage than similarly significant voltage. Both can kill pretty easily, however.

Me, too.

I was told the circuit was off.
I had been working on those wires for minutes, thinking it was off.

While I was working my pliers touched two wires, it hurt.
My joints hurt for two days.

When the current hit me, it made my hand contract.
That cut the wire and moved me away from the wire.

I used to work in a computer repair shop and one time walked back into the work area to see one of my fellow technicians working on a CRT but frozen completely still and not responding to his name or to anything. After a bit of that he convulsed and fell back off his stool onto the floor. Turns out he had somehow made contact with a capacitor inside the CRT shortly before I walked in and it had had that effect on him.

The GoogTube has made a new "feature." Before, the default player size was small, you could make it medium size or larger or full-screen. Now, the default is large and you can make it full screen. But the good news is you can still make it smaller, by decreasing your browser size, which is perfect for those of us with small screens, and by perfect i mean completely fucked. An improvement that improves nothing, but decreases the options and choices of end users.

My problem is that YouTube defaults to the tiny size instead of the large size, despite me being able to watch 1080p in real time.
