This is beginning to concern me, and she's not in the chirpingmustard users list, so there's no direct email contact we can try. She did say that Outside has been keeping her hostage, and Outside can be pretty... er... "persuasive". But it wouldn't be like her to succumb. She was an infrequent poster until TIME (interestingly her first post had to do with the Animation animation, showing an early inclination towards redundant redundancy), but once Time began, there has not been such a seaish break.

23 Commandment (Heretical Oct 1): *is detained by multiple Outside things*
24 Commandment: Still stuck Outside for the next dip or two, but I thought I'd pop in to drop a RELATED link for fellow fans of stick figures: Animator vs. Animation IV
26 Commandment: Hi pelrigg! Wingish colored newpix! I'm working on ketchup right now, should be properly otting again soon...

and then nothing. It's now 12 Voyage.

It's getting harder to follow the first commandment. Perhaps it's time for the Second Commandment. ( [...] )

Does anybody have (without publicizing it) any real contact info for her?

Speaking of absence, I'm going away (yet again) tomorrow for a few dips to Manchester, for two reasons, the first one obvious:

Treeish! Have fun in Manchester England England, across the Atlantic Sea...(it's from the musical Hair.)

I seem to have caught some micromolps. Of course, they couldn't kick in during work, when I could use sick leave and get off work. No, they waited till the wipend, when I had two molpish parties yo go to. Steambottle.

I PMed BlitzGirl yesterdip. No response. I am also worried about her, although I haven't seen anything alarming on her Bookface page. I did hear from ggh in response to PM. Outside was keeping her away, but she said she was still lurking. (If you are, ggh, maybe just say hi so we know you're ok.) PMs to BlueCrab have not been successful. :( Molpish thoughts to all.

Hi!

I'm not in the basement, I swear! But I have been in the shed, and the shed is a place that's sometimes hard to post from. My work there is not yet done, but I web-footed-raptored out for a moment to say hi, and that I'm lurking, and that I'll be back bag soon!

I may or may not ketchup properly when I get out, but in the meantime, I just want to say that I'm very excited about the related Conference, even though I too strongly suspect it is depriving us of our BlitzGirl for these two weeks. I won't be able to attend because 1) flying anywhere from NZ is pretty expensive, and 2) toddler. :) Perhaps I can co-author a presentation with someone who is thinking about going?

I have also been squeeing delightedly over the fortunes of yappo and HES. :)

And of course, I've been enjoying the great art - both from the moon and from our more terrestrial OTTers, but now this is starting to drift into ketchup, and there's some stuff needs doing in the shed before I can even contemplate ketchup....

Whether you're facing mustard or custard, here's some flan for your plan:

ETA yay, the ggh summoning worked! Now to see if the BlitzGirl summoning worked.
Maybe this will help:

Did you hear about the two TV antennae that got married? The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was amazing.

One cow said to the other, "I was artificially inseminated today!"
The second cow said, "Wow, really?"
The first cow said, "Yes, no bull!"

Two atoms were walking along the road. One said, "Oh no, I've lost my electron!"
The second one said, "Are you sure?"
The first one said, "Yes, I'm positive!"

Now we just have to wait for it.

No, it's a full q. It has to be - the other half Cue wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

We've already punned a lot a few pages ago. I don't think doing it further will help.
In fact, it will only foster the ire of the BlitzGirl, Heart of the OTT.
And if we push her too much, maybe she'll reach a point of no return.

ETA, 2 hours later, some thoughts about the OTT and the mirror.

Why did I join? Why did I stay?
When I saw a beanie in Click and Drad I immediately got an idea for this manip.
I knew that the thread existed. I knew that there were some manips in it. I posted this. "I'm not sure but it looks like they like this kind of stuff. I'll post it and see what happens.". The plan was simple: come in, post, see the reaction, go back again, the end.\
But!
They liked it. I got positive feedback. Some time later (a day? two? I don't remember) I looked at the thread again (because I had the browser tab still open or for some other reason) I was still getting comments about it. Some more time later. Still new comments. In the meantime I got an idea for another one. They lkied too. And before the comments ended I had another idea (after that one they started recognizing me). And then another one. And then another one. And another one. And so on... There was something about the thread that kept me getting inspired. At that time I was making almost no comments. Not saying almost anything. Only posting those ottifications. At some point I realized that I'm welcome here, that I like this place, and that I will stay here for some time. And then I made the film. And the respose to it vas very positive. Some unbasemented just to say how much they like it. Someone called me an OTTer for the first time (Valarya - if I remember correctly). That's when I made my final decision to stay here.
But why did it work that way?
I like Time.
But I also like other things and this is the first online community I'm part of.
I think that the OTT is exactly what I needed. Sometimes I get weird ideas (mostly while cycling) and then I make drawings (1 2 3 4), comics (5 6), objects (7 8 9 10), or films (11 12). Most of the people I know didn't like them. They didn't understand them. There was a very small group of people who liked this. When I started studying I no longer could keep in touch with most of them. There was almost no-one whom I could show my creations. But here, in the OTT people liked my ottifications. I made them using my way of thinking and they liked it that way. They inspired me to do more. Sometimes my posts inspired their ottifications.
But not only this. Sometimes I wrote form the alternative-reality-point-of-view, where I was the guy from the secret moon base. Other times I wrote seriously. Sometimes I did both in the same post. Sometimes in the same paragraph. In a lot of other places it the internet that would not be acceptable. But here? They did not get annoyed by it. (at the beginning I was afraid of this) They knew this wasn't totally serious. They understood it. Some of them were doing exactly the same (HES the hamply, lmjb the RAZOR agent, ChronosDragon the dragon, etc.).
And even more. There was this friendliness. Real. Not pretended. Not enforced. No "we all have to agree". People want to help each other. When I asked I got answers. When others asked I answered if I could. And wow! ggh stated giving everyone magnets just like that. and other awesomeful things. I thought that this is a cool idea. I sent a riverish bicycle to ggh. A lmjbot to lmjb1964. There will probably be more in the future.
There were other places where I also tried this: "post something, observe for some time, and then leave". None of them convinced me to stay.

The mirror.
It all started with the Silent Time After Time. At some point the newpixbot started making posts where we could see newpixbot holding the frame. There were 3 images, actually: The ONG, the head, and the rest of newpixbot. When someone's browser's were too small, the newpixbot became decapitated. That's where I got the idea for the newbigbottification software. I made it. Some time later I made an online interface for it (on a server that I had set up just a few days earlier). It was my first program using CGI ever. A few days later mscha installed the nowpixbottification software on his server.
For some reason I also became a blitzer. I thought it would be neat to have a bot reporting to me from the future (like mrob27 does). I made bothasar_s. (before that I was using botreports from mrob27) I thought it would be cool to have the reports look very similarly to the real newpages. And so I did. It was my first bot. It was my first program written partially in AWK (I learned AWK just because of this).
Then, the mustards arrived. Serious mustards. We couldn't read. We couldn't post. Some of us went to the facebook group. someone didn't. There was chaos. The facebook is not very compatible with the OTT for many reasons.
I could still read bothasar_s' reports (but without images). Then I get this idea. What I'm doing is archiving some of the OTT's posts. WHY NOT ARCHIVE ALL OF THEM? I already have a server. I know how to write a bot. I know AWK. I know CGI. Let's do it!
And I did it! It took me some time. I got some help from OTTers. They didn't know why I'm asking these questions (about how the forum software behaves) but they answered. Then I had to wait until all the pages are upketched. And then I announced it.
At first it only archived text. But I was still working on it. Avatars, attachments, external images, posting, editing. When I had all features I wanted I made the source code publicly available (and before that I did A LOT of clean up. If you saw some of the things that were there you'd do an Intergalactic facepalm!). Two reasons. I usually make my code available. And I wanted others to be able to run another mirror. We need redundancy. Our data is important for us. We need more than one full redundancy provider. If something happens to my botcastle we need to stay redundant. My botcastle is located at my parents' house. They allowed me to have the server and router always running.
When the next mustards came we were prepared! We could continue to read and post almost as if nothing happened. This is important because an online community needs its platform.
The mirror hasn't reached its final form yet. It will continue to evolve. The way of analyzing and storing newpages needs to be improved. I can do it. I will do it. I don't know when.
The mirror is not designed to help us if an eternal mustard arrives. Yet.
We have Aluisio's castraftle. I have not seen it in action. It's a phpBB forum where we can import our data i the OTT is no longer welcome here. But if I understand correctly, it doesn't have enough space for all the attachments. It will require hosting them elsewhere. One redundancy device requiring two servers. But still it's a very cool thing.
I have a plan for the final form of the mirror. Something like a very simple forum software. And the bot inserts data into one of the threads. If an eternal mustard arrives all there is to do is to enable posting.
No redundancy will help with one problem. Our primary platform does not belong to us. If the forum software is updated and/or something in the way it presents data is changed we will have to suddenly adjust our bots if we want to stay redundant. And just try to imagine the chaos that would appear if such a simple thing as the number of posts in a page changed.
When I started working on the mirror I wanted the thread to be accassible at mustardtime. But there is another use for it. In many posts there are external images. In some of the older posts the images are no longer there. Things on the internet have an annoying tendency to disappear. As time goes on it will only become worse. But on the mirror the images are archived. And if there are already gone the bot tries to get them from the Wayback Machine. A future blitzer will not be forced to read comments about images without being able to see them. My first post was after the end of Time so I cannot announce it early enough. But it would be great if someone did it.

Thanks for asking.

balthasar_s wrote:I wanted others to be able to run another mirror. We need redundancy. Our data is important for us. We need more than one full redundancy provider. If something happens to my botcastle we need to stay redundant.

I have an old version of the mirror partially (fully?) configured on the Linux side of this machine. It was a bit cucumbersome because I was going to run it as an isolated user and the files were all spread across the system (e.g. /var/{lib,log}/ottmirror).
Even so, this ain't a server. It doesn't get up 24/7 and even at my parents' house port forwarding isn't set up (I've already contacted the ISP for it, but to no avail).
I think we could use the GitHub Student Developer Pack to run the mirror on DigitalOcean for 20 months. It's not freely sustainable, though.
Another option would be OpenShift; I can easily spare a small gear for it. Someone else could merge the 3 of them that are free.

balthasar_s wrote:We have Aluisio's castraftle. I have not seen it in action. It's a phpBB forum where we can import our data if the OTT is no longer welcome here. But if I understand correctly, it doesn't have enough space for all the attachments. It will require hosting them elsewhere. One redundancy device requiring two servers. But still it's a very cool thing.

Actually, the current plan is to start anew, using a read-only copy of the mirror to keep the data from the old platform. And according to mrob, we'd have enough space for 3 to 6 years of OTT ({2,4}k pages), attachments included. (Oh, did I mention we have attachments in PMs and a higher avatar size limit?)
Also, ‘castraftle’? Really?

Hey, I think I finally found a subject for a talk which is RELATED to my course: “Sustainable Contingent Platforms” (i.e. redundancy). Maybe now I can get University funding.

Is the first post of NP14 early enough?

Maybe ggh (and lmjb1964, if necessary) can give a presentation through a proxy, similar to what GLR did at the Hugo Ceremony? This can even be done anonymously, so it might also work for SilentTimer.

That was the route my parents had suggested. However, before seeking your help or trying to find the appropriate channels at the Uni, I had to come up with a technical-side talk. I wouldn't hope to be successful if I were to talk about avatars while attending CS.

Mhm.. I actually got her outside email-addy from her (we swapped them during the sadness). I did not want to use it though, as I do not want to impose on her if she has got a lot of outside going on.

However, if there is sufficient consens in the OTT to compose a message for her, I am willing to send it.

Maybe all of the papers at the conference should be presented by somebody other than the author. It would double the collaboration effect, and make it just a little harder to ferret out somebody who wants to be incognito. However, it would hardly be impossible, especially if the conference is small enough. Once the otters who want to be known are eliminated, there would be only a handful of people left who might be the incognotter. Whether this is a good approach depends on what motivates the incognotters.

About contacting BlitzGirl - I suspect she'd appreciate a card offering our molpish wishes. If it's Outside mustard that's keeping her, I wouldn't expect (or request) a response. However, if she's out getting Panther Salve or something, she might not even get the card, and we wouldn't know that. But at least the number of Lucky Recovery Buildings in the (now known) area is limited, and could be queried. If it comes to that.

eta: Sciscitor - Oh - it's an email addy. That won't help us query LRBs. If you do send her some bits, please include molpishness from me.

So are we assimilating #1433? Is bird-rain the strange, chirping phenomenon we see in some of those evening and twilight frames? They don't get wet because it's raining birds not water. hah.

yappo "I was going for "generic OTTer"." - Ah. Now I wonder what everyone's "generic OTTer" image is. Mine definitely does not have a top hat. It's hard for me to generalize us. While I have a hat, it still feels like I don't. I think a lot of others seem that way, too. Woah, SBN doesn't have a hat! Well, MSW, I believe. I'd like the wolpy to have a meowlpy as a hat. Because, they're friendly wolps. :)

Aluisio "Facebug" - That feels like the natural, OTTified term for "BookFace". I'm using that from now on (if it makes sense). :)

Aluisio "Criminal Minds. Season 9, episode 21. Pig Mask. Man that was creepy." - Thanks. I hope to see that at some point. :)

mrob "oblique and lateral" - Sorry about your confusing injury. I think you said it was diaphragm-near (maybe really near). Glad to have you back!

mrob (in reference to the wiki) wrote:Can we please go back to when they were always expanded from the start, and you use the Table of Contents (not redundant!) to get to the desired section?
I've gone to these pages, where I believe I got it started to load, then went offline. I might be wrong, but I thought it hadn't cached anything that was hidden. Maybe it's done on Firefox (I'm rocking 25) and not your browser (mobile). I'll have to double check another time. Anyways, I like the navigation. If I were to do it on my website, I'd attempt to give it a navigation bar specific to finding comics by number. Well, Sciscitor's database has something like this and it's paginated. Maybe that one's better for you (if maybe less complete (or maybe other times moreso)).

Ah, then Sciscitor says he wants to revamp his site... Yeah, I got ideas. But yours would be no Javascript, right? Hmm.

mrob wrote:disable JavaScript (which is hidden very hard: visit "about:config", find "javascript.enabled" and toggle to false)
Thanks. I haven't felt like figuring out where that went (and there it was in config). :)

ED "Ni ni ni etc has done a lot in preventing "we must all agree" from becoming a problem, methinks." - As long as there is a standard (which you can just create) then it's okay that you don't agree with another standard. If, somehow, you were to disagree with everything and not have a standard... maybe that would be bad. But, probably impossible, because of ni ni ni standard inc copyright trademark.

Sciscitor wrote:But compiling a list of molpish and steambottlish words would be quite a task.
Maybe it's not seaish enough, but my version of automome has the OTTish words divided up in that way. Maybe you also need words like "hate" and "love".

ST - If your speech is on a recognizable subject (one which you've done in a post) would you also be recognizable. Maybe if others are also anonymous there might be a game of "match the speech to the OTTer" going on. ^_^

slinches wrote:I'm just interested in the balance between control of personal info online and the opportunity costs associated with maintaining that control.
While I think that may be an issue with some, it's probably first an issue of avatar disassociation (a term I just made up...FOR SCIENCE!), the phenomenon I posted about earlier. If people know who I am online, such as with some posts outside of this thread, I'm okay with that. If they find something of mine that seems opposite to what they think of me, that's the way it is. If they find me.... hah. It's like, you can probably know almost everything about me...but if you actually then also know me in real life... I think everyone here probably knows something about social anxiety. Yeah.

Thought -- We really need some standard for upvoting. I think, maybe, it's "appreciated" (lmjb just said "enjoyed"). For example: I saw ucim's "aligned" image, and liked it, but sometimes I'm not quite sure what to say. I'd like a "no comment" but "upvote" sort of dealy to deal out.

N_B "some IR leds in a hat (preferably your avatar's hat of course) will mostly prevent pictures with your face as IR blinds most cameras." - Hah. Maybe some might want that, but I don't care much if someone takes my picture, sees me, remembers my face, etc. If those IR LEDs could blind me instead... Oh, wait, I still want to see [later].

Sustainabilizer - I tried to make it clear that it wouldn't be possible for me to go. This is unrelated to the social issues. Sorry for not being clear.

ggh "Perhaps I can co-author a presentation with someone who is thinking about going?" - First, hi again! Second, yes. I think, if someone's able/willing to go but maybe doesn't have something to give a speech on...have my speech, or someone else's. You could give a speech by another since some of us can't go. :)
Ninja'd. Proxy. Smart people. How about random assignment of speeches? hah. Even if someone's doing their own speech. ;)
Double ninja'd. *walks away, sullenly*

I guesssheeple I had a dream that some guy next to us, while we were out somewhere, muttered "sheeple", while he got his jacket on and I think was getting on a bike (motorcycle). I know, only tangentially RELATED, but do you think the sheeple of thread #610 care? *shakes head* (note: I've never been there. It's probably nice.)

Aluisio "And there shall be weepends and gnashing of teeth." - FTFY

Other thought -- If we have longpix and shortpix, can we also have longposts and shortposts? I'm not sure how spoilering affects a posting being long or not.

Sciscitor "However, if there is sufficient consens in the OTT to compose a message for her, I am willing to send it." - I say, just do it on one of those lovey-dovey holidays (Cueganmas) and wish her well and maybe hope for a reply.

sheeple You never know. Maybe it really happened.

NP 972/2129

At this point timewaiters have, using the information in the starry sky, pinpointed the date where the OTC takes place to be April 10th or 14th, 13291. However, there is a lot of conflicting information in the thread, with some people saying that this corresponds to fall in the northern hemisphere, while others say that it is spring. I don't know enough about astronomy to decide who is right. There is also a suggestion that the sky corresponds around these dates to a band between 37 and 158 degrees west in longitude, which would mean North America. However, other timewaiters say that the accumulated uncertainty in Earth's rotation rate this far in the future makes determining the longitude an impossibility.

Many timewaiters do not believe that Randall would actually have the OTC take place at such an arbitrary far date, especially with a sky, flora and fauna that seem to give conflicting information about the time and place, and so have converted to Randallversism, that is, the belief that the OTC actually takes place in an Earth-like location of Randall's fancy that is not actually identifiable as our Earth. Madagascarism and Africanism are dwindling in numbers.

Meanwhile, a shooting star appeared in the OTC -- after several people wished for exactly this to happen -- and newpixbot managed to catch one of the intercalary frames, with other timewaiters finding the four other ones. There might be some missing, especially between 2440b and 2440c, but we have no way to know. There might be more discussion in the next few pages about the significance of this unique event.

Now back to the trip.
