Aaargh! I just realized that when someone quotes someone else, the forum displays it starting with a large unmatched double-quote character. And it's not even the symmetric kind. And it's in the wrong place: surely it should be after the word "wrote".
The entire forum must have gazillions of unmatched, misplaced double-quotes. Oh, the humanity typography!

(And I just added one more, sorry. On the bright side, my battery is up to 44 percent now.)

HES wrote:Or I can just go "meh,I trust OTTers" *click ignore*.

The problem is that you're not only trusting OTTers to not intentionally try to harm you, but also, to trust everyone else the OTTer trusted, and trust everyone else redundantly. Somewhere along the line, somebody may have accidentally done something <computery> stupid somewhere that lets somebody else harm you.

Change the hostname in the URL to its IP address. In this case, "www.cvh-server.de" is 46.4.31.137, so the link becomes http://46.4.31.137/umfragen/conference-community-2015/ After doing that I was able to click a bunch of checkmarks and hit the Submit button, which frankly gives away nothing personal about anyone so I don't know why we even need an authentication certificate. I also submitted a comment and my name and "mrob27", all of which can be much more easily discovered by looking at this thread. Since the OTT is public and requires no X.509 certificates, I think it would take a pretty ridiculous knot of twisted logic to convince me I've degraded my security by using an unverified IP address.

In case you're curious, bypassing DNS isn't just a good way to deal with over-paranoid HTTPS links, it's also a good way to deal with *dish things like that time some government tried to block social networking sites from their citizens (well actually it's happened a few times with different governments). In one case the DNS record intended to disable some site within just one country (I think it was Pakistan blocking YouTube) propagated to the entire world. Oops. In another case the government simply blocked all the DNS servers. I have a bot that does DNS lookups and caches the results locally. It's Halloween, so if this kind of thing scares you, have at it.

I'll also note that this IP lookup trick, regardless of whether you're bypassing X.509 or an evil government, does not work on websites where more than one website shares the same IP address. For example, if you try it with mrob.com right now you get 208.83.210.19, but if you go to http://208.83.210.19 it gives you an error with explanation that is largely relevant. If you try a more specific URL, like 208.83.210.19/time/index.html, you get a 404. There are many sites using the same hosting provider, and they don't need much actual server power, so the hosting provider has set up a bunch of virtual machines within one real machine. To see all the hosts that share my IP, you can use a reverse-IP listing site, like sameid.net: http://sameid.net/ip/208.83.210.19/ and note that not all of those listed are still active websites. If my website provided some kind of life-saving service, I'd probably rent a real server and full ownership of a single IP address.

Happy Halloween, everymolpy! It's cold and rainy here. I'm trying to decide if the fact that I'm not sure I feel like dressing up and going out means I'm getting old.

Just come as a lightbulb. Of course, people might confuse you with your bot, but if nobody throws bicycles, that'd be ok.

Good news, the wolpy-food-funding-source has been secured. Of course, that means the wolpies themselves will have to get by with a single human at their every beck and call all day. And also that we'll be leaving the town with a big black raptorcat as the mascot for their hand-egg team, and moving to the one with a big black raptorcat as the mascot for their hand-egg team.

The two largest wolpies made the trip with us, and got to experience what they clearly considered raptor-water for the first time today.

ETA3: Redundancy Is Molpish!
Or: How To Hold a Speech at the Sustainability Conference

Dear fellow OTTers,

for some of us (“sciency staff”) it might be quite normal to hold a speech at a scientific conference named “Towards a Sustainable Online Community”.

For some others this might be quite intimidating.

Since I want that everymolpy can feel at home at the conference, I'm herewith giving some hints and ideas what to speak about and how to prepare. (Sciency staff: Please help the others, and please point out if you find something in my hints below which should be improved.)
Spoiler:
You don't need to surprise anyone.

Science can be entertaining, but it is not the same as entertainment. This is not a detective story where suspense is an essential element to make it interesting. It's perfectly okay if the audience knows in advance what you will speak about (which will be the case anyway since we're all Time travellers ;)).

In other words: Feel free to discuss even details of your speech in the OTT. It's RELATED, so it belongs here. You can use spoilers to avoid spoiling the suspense for those who want it.

Redundancy is molpish.

It is not necessary that all speeches are entirely different. If you want to address the same topic as someOTTer else, just do it. Although we're all GLR, we're all different, so the speeches will be different enough. (And again, you don't need to surprise anyone.)

This is an interdisciplinary conference.

You are an expert for <something>. Since the others are experts for other <somethings>, you are probably the best expert at the conference for your specific <something>. (There might be more than one expert for <computery stuff>, but we'll be able to deal with that.)

This means that there is no need at all to feel intimidated by the expertise of the audience – just the opposite: You are doing the audience a favour if you explain even those things which are “way too basic” for yourself.

This is what the first part of understanding everything looks like.

For the same reason there is no need to be afraid that your scientific contribution might be too riverish. This conference is about bringing together many small grains of semencoffee… sand, to form the seaish and flutterbeewingish sandcastle of understanding how everything a sustainable communitiy (read: the OTT) works. Just bring your grain of sand, and let your sustainable community build the castle.

Questions are polite.

If the audience poses questions about your speech, maybe even interrupting you, that's a sign of politeness: Your speech is interesting, and they want to understand it even better.

There are no stupid questions.

If you barely understand anything, just ask Rosetta the speaker. Remember this is an interdisciplinary conference where noone expects that you are an expert for the <something> the speaker is speaking about.

Everything will be molpish.

Since we're a friendly bunch, I'm sure that everything will turn out molpish.

In fact I already used the chronotransponder to ask someone in the future whether the conference will have been turning out molpish, and I got a positive answer.

Conclusion:
Don't worry, feed squirpies. Image

It was, and it also was much more interactive than they knew how to deal with. They're used to water that just stays where it is, not water that does what it wants.

I, of course, now have a whole new flock of web-footed raptors to start aligning. At least I seem to have conquered the micromolps.

The trick is getting the kind of steambottles that can be dealt with. That's actually quite molpish. But yes, congratulations all around. Some advice for the youngster, it may not stay the right place always, be prepared for that, and willing to take action if it changes. (And yes, that's advice I'd have been better off taking myself, a year ago, but never mind that.)

"I want to go to Donaueschingen myself by train; from Donaueschingen I am going to walk to Geisengen; from Geisengen I am going to take the train to Engen, and from Engen I am going to bicycle to Constance."
I don't think that's particularly sustainable (though it could be somewhat more so if one takes the bicycle on the train, as balthesar_s seems to intend to do).

On the subject of me possibly going to the conference, my comment would be "wildly unlikely, but I'll try to do something if it turns out to be possible". I think that's somewhere between 0.01 and 0.10 (only not straight 0 because there's been a vague plan of going to Austria at some point within the next yip anyway).
There are two films that I particularly like.
One of them is a science-fiction dramatic comedy involving a boy who accidentally travelled in time. Extremely popular when it originally came out in 1985, it retains a major cult following to this day.
The other one, of course, is Back to the Future.

t1i – The First ONGs

Postby SilentTimer » Sat Nov 01, 2014 7:53 pm UTC

One year ago, SilentTimer wrote:

*** STARTING THOUGHT TRANSMISSION FROM THE PAST ***

November 2013.

Phew, the story outline is ready – more or less, at least. I'll probably change some details when the story goes ONG. (Is it really necessary to kill all the Beanies?) But it's ready enough that I can start drawing.

But how?

First decision: In Time, the figures don't have names (except Amtoo, perhaps), so they won't have any in t1i. I'll refer to them as “Megan” or “Cueball” in file names and such, but not in the story.

Next decision: Shall I draw the images in a high resolution and scale them down (as GLR did), or shall I draw them in their original resolution?

Since I'm planning to copy many stick figures from Time, the only thing which makes sense is to draw everything in the original resolution.

The prologue begins slightly below sea¹ level. So let's compile a background image by combining the background of some Time frames at about the same altitude.

*draws*
Spoiler:
*The GIMP, running full-screen, with a graphics tablet*
*many layers, showing snippets from Time frames, forming a slope*

Okay, this slope looks compelling. Maybe the tree is somewhat too easy to recognize as a mirrored version of m2777. But I don't think that's a problem. After all, t1i is derived from Time.

Hey, the shell script which turns the slope into a pan with a secret message in it worked out of the box. :) It even adds my personalised black frame: In Time, the corners of the frame are coloured b7b7b7/212121, in t1i, it's b8b8b8/222222. (Let's see whether anyone notices. :))

Now comes the real drawing. Let's start with the scene before the pan.

*re-opens the slope in The GIMP*
*many layers, showing snippets from Time frames, forming a slope*
*creates a new layer*
*draws one black frame with corners b8b8b8/222222*

The pan starts here.
*positions the frame at a specific pixel slightly left from the middle*

*makes a copy of the frame*
So the scene before the pan can start here.
*moves the new frame to the left*

Now how to draw a molpy?

Let's take the rabtor from m2763.

*cuts it out*
*paste*
*switches layer mode to “darken only”*

Hmm… looks okay, but a molpy of my own and of a different kind would be better.

*does a web search for molpish photos*
*turns a photo into a silhouette*
*scales the silhouette*

Yeah, that fits better.
Now let's draw the frames before it hops away …

*draws several separate layers with something which looks like a stone*

Okay, that molvement is subtle enough that it won't disappoint The Great Molpy Hunter.

Next, let's draw the Beanies.

They are returning from an expedition. Maybe they just made a break to do some final measurements, so they have to pick up their luggage, including a water can and a tripod. Let's draw that.

Hmm… how do my Beanies look like? Amtoo's group is at the castle, so I need new Beanies. Since I can only take them from Time, I have to modify them.

Phew, it's not easy to create new characters from GLR's drawings in a consistent way.
*note to self: The Beanie who is most complicated to draw must die first.*

Do they say something? Of course they do. I want them to speak real Beanish, not gibberish. Since tresoldi and others did an excellent job to decode Beanish, I can indeed construct a sentence they can reasonably say in this situation. (And later, there will be only one Beanie left, so this problem will vanish.)

*draws*

Done. :) Looks compelling⁴.
Now let's save everything as separate frames.

*cuts out the area with the frame*
*activates the layers for t1i-0000.png*
*exports t1i-0000.png*
*activates the layers for t1i-0001.png*
*exports t1i-0001.png*
[…]
*activates the layers for t1i-0014.png*
*exports t1i-0014.png*
*remembers not to save the image*
*does a lot of undo instead*
*deactivates the layer with the frame and activates the layer with the other one*
*cuts out the area with the frame*
*activates the layers for t1i-0015.png*
*exports t1i-0015.png*
[…]

Heck, this is complicated.
But it's okay since I have to do all this only once.

Oh no – mustard!

*draws, fixing the mustard*
*deactivates the layer with the second frame and activates the layer with the first one*
*cuts out the area with the frame*
*activates the layers for t1i-0000.png*
*exports t1i-0000.png*
*activates the layers for t1i-0001.png*
*and so on …*

Oh no – more mustard!

*draws, fixing the mustard*
[…]

Okay, it's ready now.
But I'll have to find a more efficient way to do this when the story goes on.

Next there will be the molpies during the pan.
Fortunately, this is easy. It's not even worth to keep the xcf files for this.

Oh no – mustard! And no xcf files. So let's restart from the png file.

Oh no – more mustard!

*draws*

*note to self: always keep the xcf file*

Phew – done. Now there's a lot to detect in the pan – hopefully not too easy; I don't want to bore the OTTers. Time t1i will tell.

Oh no – more mustard! This is before the flood, so there must have been some vegetation. Back to drawing …

*draws*
*fixes more mustard*
*continues drawing*
*draws even more*

Done.

Now comes the easy part: The landing of The Fourty. I can even take some frames unchanged from Time. :)

But how to proceed from here?

I need a scenery in the forest. That means: trees. How to draw trees?

If I take a photo from a tree in that region and turn it into a silhouette, it should do. Unfortunately, the tree does not share my idea. Hmm…

*draws*

After a lot of photo-manipulating and drawing I now have some more or less compelling trees. They are in a resolution between that of the landing scene and that of the bulk of Time. Hopefully this will make it easy to scale The Fourty up and down to match it.

I also have learned that it causes a lot of extra work if the exported frames are only a part of the total image. From now on, each camera view will correspond to one xcf file.

*draws*

Hmm… it is not easy to scale The Fourty, including Cuegan, to match the resolution of the forest. I need to get out of the forest as soon as possible!

*draws*

Help! I'm lost in the forest!

*draws*

New method to export individual frames: Each figure, molpy or item is a layer of its own, with the frame number in its name. So if I want to re-export a frame, I just need to check all frames which have the correct number.

*draws*
*exports*

Uaaah! Mustard!

*draws*
*exports*

Re-exporting t1i-0237 takes an eternity.
Hopefully this was the last mustard in it.

*draws*
*exports*

UAAAAAAAAAH! Image Image Image Image Image

*draws*
*exports*

[…]

*some weeks have passed*

Phew! Now everything is ready until Cuegan get their bags (t1i-0266).

That's just the beginning of my story (Will it reach 1000 frames?), but enough to fill two months. With the correct timing, the actual sequel to Time will begin on 25 Dec and be my holiday present to the OTT. :) Let's add “To be continued” to the last frame and publish it.

But how?

*overwhelming social anxiety*

I don't want to delurk in the OTT. Maybe later, but not now. But this means that I cannot ONG the story myself.

There is only one OTTer who can reliably ONG this story: newpixbot. So I'll have to contact newpixbot's slave master: mscha.

But how?

The most OTTish way besides posting to the OTT is a PM.
So I need an account.
But who am I?

I'm an OTTer, albeit a silent one.
SilentOTTer? SilentMolpy?

Hmm… my story is not in the OTT tradition, but in Time tradition. As molpish as the OTT is, what has brought me here is Time. Yes, I feel as an OTTer, but even before that I'm a Timer. A silent one. Hmm… “SilentTimer”? Sounds good …

Hey, there was BlitzGirl's molpish OTTification of OtherComic #313. With just a few changes, this can be my avatar.

*draws*

Works.
Neat⁴.

*creates an account*
*sends a PM to mscha*
*waits for it*

Boom de yada!
mscha himself is going to help me.
newpixbot itself will ONG my story.
Boom de yada, boom de yada,
boom de yada, boom de yada, …

Now it's Time for me to wait for it.

*waits for it*

Hmm… I have an idea how Cuegan's way up he mountain shall look like …

*waits for it*
*draws*

*draws, waiting for it*

Awesomeful background info SilentTimer. Dies this mean you're going to give us an equally molpish Christmas present this year? Also congrats to SBN and anybody else to whom it is appropriate.

I think you can make me a 0.3 on the likelihood to attend conference scale. That number will vary significantly based on the day of the week it is held as well.

And it looks like something else is not going to space today. I'm slightly concerned I've ruined the hopes of humanity ever reaching space again with my talk of explosions :( I wonder if there's a way to undo my accidental curse?

Edit to actually say SBN when intended.
