Thanks. Speaking of these (recently) I haven't invested any time into my own version. But that's okay for now, I believe most of mine is covered in mrob's version. (Speaking of his, I really should add those what-ifs, since that's OTToMeme's theme...)

And then to continue the aside, I've sorta been down due to lapleopard mustard and baby fingers. You know, how babies sometimes love to pull on the tails of lapleopards? Hah. But now I'm working from a tablet. No...tablets aren't meant for coding are they? I'm still determined to make it work. It's got a leopard, so I can work with it. (Touchleopard? Any better suggestions for a tablet+leopard? Oh, maybe 'petleopard', because you pet it...i.e. touch it. ^_^)

Future plans for OTToMeme may be obvious if you know where to look, but yeah, lofty future plans....

Plus, I'm actually working on Time Drags On (link in sig...no, the other link). It's more programmatic, but I'm tinkering slowly, sorry.

NP 1116/2202 I have reached Beacon Beta, and therefore shall report my blitz progress.

Time-related projects are becoming clearer. Yappobiscuits wants to create a soundtrack for Time, with different musical themes for different periods, which can be played in parallel to the frames. This sounds like a very ambitious project and I'm curious to see what will have become of it. (Honestly I'm not sure what verb tense to use here, when I'm in the present past and talking about the future past and future present.) Taixzo is also talking about creating a soundtrack for Time, but of a different type, which would just play in conjunction with the video.

I haven't advanced very far since my last message, so there isn't much to add. In the OTC, Cuegan and the Beanies have reached the Beanie leader, but in the OTT she hasn't been yet recognised as such; indeed she's been referred to as "Beardo's secretary". I suspect that in the next fewpix it'll become clear that she's more than that.

I've added a decree. Oops.
So yesterdip I recieved notification that my leopad is being shipped :D And its OTTerBox. :D :D
I might look into getting it a physical leopard with blue teeth, but I'll see how usable it is without.
My mobile organised sand is definitely too small for coding (I tried writing some SB code on it back when SB was new, and it was very steambottle) but the leopad is a fair amount more seaish so writing on it should be treeish.

That's a pretty good (and relevant question). An army of wolpies would probably carry doggybags for their meals. They might use ughbags when visiting the little puppy's room. And they might bag some bitches while on deploy. *cough* It was appropriate language. Unless someone can OTTify that....word....

Long ago, my grandfather had some stock in a company that went bankrupt. He didn't notice though, that another company took it over. Yips and yips passed. One dip, I was bored at my wffs, and this being the time before Time, I went to other places on the internet. In this case, I went here. I started entering the names of relatives, and put in my grandfather's name. Money appeared! A pleasing amount of it, for only a little paperwork. 'Twas a good dip.

Thanks for the charts and statistics, Earthling! :)

Over the last dozen newpages or so the average ppnp* rate has been hovering at an even 1.00 according to mrob's OTT rate page. (Seems sort of odd to have so many 1.00, does it round up?) Anyway, we've reached the point where it takes nearly two dips to fill up a newpage. If the rate holds (it probably won't), and if my rough calculations are correct (they probably aren't) we'll reach 2300 newpages about 167 dips from now, June 26 in heretical Time.

(Do we have a tool for converting any given date to the OTTish calendar? I know azule's Todip can get the current date, and ucim's calendar runs through March 2015H, but what about future dips or past dips?)

Link wrote: [my automome is] a black-box reimplementation and OTTification of AUTOMEME, which sadly appears to have died

You can still gitclone it from https://github.com/inky/automeme.git, and on my machine at least the basic test works: after doing the git clone command, cd into the src directory and type "./raw.cgi", which should spit out ten memes in HTML-ready ASCII, (meaning that they include things like "’" and "…"). I think it'd be pretty easy to recreate the HTML and CSS provided your server provider allows you to run Python server-side (which mine did not, thus the Perl).

I'm still behind on updating my own memes file, I just finished adding @Link's version 3.4. I added "adjec-noun" in a ton of places (these are things like ENDISHNESS, called "noun ... property" in Python). There are also seven new memes from @Link, and I successfully identified (and documented) the origins of most of them. In the Legend of Zelda Tingle meme I used syllables from @ED's random title generator, because why not?

CUEBALL, CUEBALL! MEGRY-KITBUN! ...THESE ARE THE MAGIC WORDS
THAT CUEBALL CREATED XIMSELF. DON'T BLITZNAP THEM!

There is also this mysterious, apparently Spanish in origin, meme:

¡THIS TREBUCHAT IS SUSTAINABILIZING ME!
¡THIS BEARAPTOR IS BLITZNAPPING ME!
¡THIS FLUTTERBEE IS DEMUSTARDING ME!
¡THIS WHISTLE OF TEMPORAL HARMONY IS NINJAING ME!
¡THIS OINTMENT IS KETCHUPPING ME!

With only "This NOUN is VERBing me" to go on I've had trouble figuring out what the ch*rp this is supposed to be a reference to. Is this another Firefly or Dr. Who thing? Whatever it is, I hope it's not obscene or offensive.

azule wrote:([...] I really should add those what-ifs, since that's OTToMeme's theme...)

There are a lot more I haven't OTTified yet. I didn't finish with the book, and I never even started with the What-If titles from the website (most of which are not in the book). So more to come, eventually, I guess... Image

BlitzGirl wrote:Over the last dozen newpages or so the average ppnp* rate has been hovering at an even 1.00 according to mrob's OTT rate page. (Seems sort of odd to have so many 1.00, does it round up?)

The posts per nopix column (heretically labeled "posts /hr") is rounded to the nearest 0.01. There is only one place the number gets changed, and it's a typical decaying-average formula: $g_dcy_posts_24 = (34 * $g_dcy_posts_24 + $g_bucket_posts) / 35;. The rounding-off is done by a "%6.2f" format string, which means print a floating-point value with two digits after the decimal point and 6 digits total.
But there was a more subtle problem: it was only checking and updating the averages once per new post, meaning that it was ignoring postless hours almost as if they're too sad to think about.
To highlight the problem, I changed the format string to "%8.4f" to get 4 digits after the decimal point and gave my bot the old three-finger salute. Here is the result:

Code: Select all

NP2188 20141219.08:00:00 15344.59 1.1074
NP2189 20141221.14:31:00 15400.16 1.0337
NP2190 20141223.01:25:00 15434.01 1.0106
NP2191 20141224.12:01:00 15469.74 1.0033
NP2192 20141226.01:44:00 15506.77 1.0010
NP2193 20141227.20:33:00 15550.34 1.0003
NP2194 20141229.16:00:00 15593.96 1.0001
NP2195 20141231.06:00:00 15631.98 1.0000
NP2196 20150101.14:23:00 15664.19 1.0509
NP2197 20150103.04:00:00 15697.36 1.1395

See those numbers getting 3x close to 1.0 on each step? and then suddenly jumping back up? Each of those is a time when the average would have rightly been pulled down towards a lower goal but was artificially inflated instead. Here is what it looks like now:

Code: Select all

NP2188 20141219.08:00:00 15344.59 1.23
NP2189 20141221.14:31:00 15400.16 0.81
NP2190 20141223.01:25:00 15434.01 1.00
NP2191 20141224.12:01:00 15469.74 1.05
NP2192 20141226.01:44:00 15506.77 1.08
NP2193 20141227.20:33:00 15550.34 1.04
NP2194 20141229.16:00:00 15593.96 0.97
NP2195 20141231.06:00:00 15631.98 0.96
NP2196 20150101.14:23:00 15664.19 1.14
NP2197 20150103.04:00:00 15697.36 1.03

Much more believable. It's fixed now; in case you're using your leopard looking for the update, keep in mind that mrob.com sends a 10-minute cache timeout value with every response so it'll take that long (or maybe a bit more) for you to see it.
The curious OTTers out there may wish to to verify the calculations, so I'll explain the datestamps on the Newpages. Each Newpage is marked with a (heretical, sorry) date and time that the Goat of that page appeared, in Randall's timezone. So for example, NP2191 is marked "20141224.12:01:00" because the Goat of Newpage 2191 posted at Wed Dec 24, 2014 5:01 pm UTC which is 12:01 PM in Randall's time or newpix 15470.02. However the newpix stamp shown next to it is the pengoatimate post, i.e. post 38 (if we start counting at Pope=0) for reasons that are a little more clear if you knew how hard it is to parse the HTML to figure out when we're in the start of a new post.
So the algorithm is, roughly: At the end of every nopix (whether postless or not) perform the decaying-average calculation "new_average = (34*old_average + posts_during_this_hour) / 35" and at the completion of every Newpage (defined as the moment a Goat appears) spit out a line of statistics including the current average.

[...] ucim's calendar runs through March 2015H

That's only because you didn't bother to change the little number in the Yip input box. Change it to 2 and "Go ahead, click submit". You'll get the calendar for Yip 2. (Or be really bold and change it to 3...)

Treeish. I've cloned it, because it would be sad if it really died. I may or may not end up doing anything with it.

My calendar program for the Ecclesiastical Calendar does not do a direct translation; it starts with the Dawn of Time (mip 1, dix 1) of the chosen yip, converts it to a heretical date (month 3, day 25), and loops from there keeping day and dix in sync, taking care of month, mip, year, and yip rollovers in the loop. (Doing this lets me take advantage of heretical php date functions.)

It is valid for heretical years starting at 1AD (extending the present heretical calendar back that far, which is heretical heresy to begin with), and remains valid until the heretical calendar changes (again) or your computers integers overflow. You can set the starting yip in the form, the program then displays the calendar for that yip. I can post the code if you like, but were I to write a standalone date converter I'd do it differently (because there's no loopiness involved).

Oh yes, Madness filters. Here we go. It seems that lol was originally "¡This boiling hot lava is burning me!" and that the cheese one is an inside joke referring to the earlier... but it is also mentioned in this thread from late 2008 from which it seems the phrase appeared in wordfilters earlier (which also explains the "(yeah, old school)" comment in the 2011 mapping). Most recently it appeared in @ED's CueMegAll from which I probably should have recognized it.

Yes, that's the one. Related?

For decree - two stories.

First one: I once went on a concert tour to Hawaii. We had a concert on Maui and were free that day until the concert, but were supposed to meet at the Banyan Tree. So when the time I was walking along the street and saw a big sign saying "Banyan Tree Restaurant", and a number of us heading in that direction. I followed them, but while we were waiting a number of us went to the park across the way, where we had some fun playing like monkeys in the (low) trees. We warmed up (there, I think) and then went into wherever the concert was, and did the concert. That evening we flew back to Oahu, the next day we flew back to the States, and I came home to my apartment with a pineapple in my hand. My landlady was entertaining a guest who saw my pineapple and asked about it; I said I had just come from Hawaii.

"Oh, did you see the banyan tree?", he asked. Well, I wasn't sure what he meant; I'd seen the restaurant and even sung there. What was special about the restaurant?

"No, the banyan tree. It's the largest banyan tree in this hemisphere", he replied.

Turns out it was in the park we were waiting at, and I'd been swinging from the branches of that very tree without knowing what it was.

I might even have pictures of it, but they (and a zillion others) were taken with a 16mm minox spy camera, on film that I'd hand loaded from a movie film reel and stapled back together for processing at a movie processing machine the college had. I didn't have equipment to print them, so that reel of negatives is in one of my drawers somewhere, unviewed for over thirty years. Maybe when I get an adequate scanner I can do something with them.

I actually still have the camera, but the gaskets have deteriorated, and better tiny digital cameras abound.

Second one: I'm a bit absent-minded and unobservant. In college, if you wanted to ensure that I got a message, the best thing to do would be to tape it across the doorway. This was proven both necessary and sufficient when I needed to remind myself of something, put tape across the doorway and put my reminder message smack dab in the middle of it at eye level. Some time later, when I needed reminding, I was heading for my room, ducked under this little obstacle, got whatever it is I was retrieving, and walked out the doorway without looking, whereupon the tape snapped and wrapped itself (and the message) around me.

I got the message.

It's not totally random. It's a reference.

So far, only one person outside of my house has gotten it.
I googled a bit, and I've found a video that contains that phrase. I think it's the correct one, but I'm not entirely sure. Never saw it before.

LINK USED EMERGENCY KITTEN! IT'S A SUPER KITTEN!

ucim wrote: I always wondered if that had anything to do with... now I can't remember it but I can picture the icon (looks like a line drawing of a mushroom with a face)... something like: "Nobody is taking cheese's place".

The original quote was "No-one. Will. Be. Taking. Cheese's. Spot." (but in a vibrant red), seen in Cheese's signature. The quote is of this post from the thread Enigmas and Diversions > Forum Games > Second-Last Poster Wins!. The date on that post is 2008 Jun 5, and the thread is, of course, devoted to the molpishness of the pengoatimate post (though in those ancient times they spoke of it in an odd language that is strange to our ears).
It's all RELATED. I kid you not. Read the thread (It won't take long, I can Wait).

BlitzGirl wrote:Perhaps the forum user named Cheese? Xe's been active since 2007.

Indeed, and the owner of the mushroom-like avatar @ucim recalls.

I wouldn't rule anything out completely, but I have traced "This cheese is burning me!" back to the "Roybertito's" episode of the "Dr. Tran" series (YouTube playlist here) a video that was uploaded to their channel in 2008 May (and which is NSFW and TV-MA despite its claimed TV-Y rating). It explains the Spanish origin evident in its ¡punctuation! That was prior to the xkcd fora references, and was most probably @M.qrius's "video that contains that phrase".
TvTropes also has an xkcd fora summary (warning: link points to TvTropes) mentioning the cheese sieve as part of their discussion of the broader phenomenon of which Our Beloved Furious Doodling is but a small example.
So the sequence was Dr. Tran → coincidental Cheese quote → first "lol" to "burning me!" filter → Madness 2009 → later Madnessen → CueMegAll → Link's AUTOMEME.
Glad we got that sorted out!

I didn't have equipment to print them, so that reel of negatives is in one of my drawers somewhere, unviewed for over thirty years. Maybe when I get an adequate scanner I can do something with them.

Some years ago, a colleague and I bought a Reflecta DigitDia 5000 (the link leads to the newer model at about the same price). Each of us had about 9.000 slides and/or negatives. So any other non-automated scanning process was pretty much out of question, as was using a commercial scanning service at the rates they charged back then. So we bought the scanner together, effectively cutting the cost in half. I've digitized all of my images over the course of about three weeks (primarily setting the thing to work once I left home in the morning and again when I came back in the evening or let it run when I comaed. The quality was really good and I am able to use the digital files a lot easier than the slides before (for which I did not even have a projector anymore.

So I can recommend it but only if you can pool resources to lower the price per scan, which, at my arrangement amounted to about 0.07 €, or about half of it if you take into account the price of the scanner when sold again (which would not be very likely as my colleague seems to be still working on his collection...).

Apparently, it's even fabulouserer if you're it. In some circles at least, the second-to-last post wins... meaning @Sciscitor wins the penultigoat for this newpage!

Well, apparently there's the IGN-dotting that didn't show up in @ED's analytics or @Sciscitor's data. Congratulations!
