I disagree on beesnake. :P
Chirpy is chir(a)p(tormolp)y, yes?
Goat is not a molpy, right, but what is a goatH's OTT name?
Leopard, right, but then it's under the list as keyboard, which is neither "molpy" nor "raptor".

Indeed. Keyboard is the molpy, which may be "keyboardraptor" in full, but naturally GLR shortened it for Othercomic 1031 and the shortened version has become commonplace. Speculation is that the keyboardraptor was named so due to the pattern on its coat resembling the shadows cast by small keys hanging upon an old-fashioned display board, like so:

If I recall correctly, the reason "Hamply" isn't "Hamlpy" is that I can't pronounce it.

Nice addition. But it might still count as "molpy" with corrupted pronunciation and then spelling. I know there's a linguistic term for it but it's never on my tongue.

Either way I'm semi-counting it as an outlier.

I think too many of the words are something-py or something-btor and the like, and the heresy in the names we use is too easily traced. We must think outside the bag. Far be it from me to propose changing the lexicon (it's always easier to point out its shortcomings than to actually do something about it :) ) but perhaps we could go further afield. The giraffe, for example, a canonical unit of length (perhaps only of height, but let's not restart the relativity thread!) that comes to about sixteen heretical feet, of which half is neck. This would imply that an actual beast of the description that inspired the unit might be called a foursquare. And since poetic meters are measured in feet, and its neck is eight feet, an alternate name would be octameter. Octameter must of course be the scientific term, and foursquare the layman's word, but redundancy is kittish.

On your issue, ucim, I'm thinking more of meowlpy and turtlemolp. One with more heresy. When you say giraffe should be foursquare (which I missed the step that got you there) I think more something descriptive paired with either molpy or raptor, such as necklpy. Isn't this similar to how all animals are named in their etymology? It's even how most "scientific" (Latin) animal names are forms.

I wouldn't mind more foreign language contributions (paired with appropriate suffix).

In other words, humanoids: two legs and two arms and one head on the top of a torso, two eyes, two ears, and so on. But I was going to give them hats (because they're part of the OTT universe, of course) and completely different clothes (or maybe no "clothes" since they're bots), and change the faces somehow.
Daniel Mroz faces are built pretty much the same way as Muppet faces, where you can just pick a random nose, mouth, eyes, hair and ears and you have a new character. The features have an organic shape to them, but when you look close they are clearly just as robotic as the rest of the body. If you're making mini figures you might want to draw the faces (or use masks).
There is more Mroz-inspired artwork in the excellent Google doodle, or of course just search for "Cyberiada grafika" or something like that.
I sometimes build mini figures from electronic components (I even made some Christmas presents this way). I usually don't make faces. But i think that this time I'll have to. I have to think about it. And about the hats.
Recently I wanted to build a blitzgirlbot but somehow the inspiration went away and so far I only cut out a punsaw.

I wanted to comment that not only the quoted attachments' filenames but also the original non-resized attachments' filenames are mr*bdex'd. For example this. But now I see that the mustard is now replaced with another one. The mr*bdex is empty (ETA: except the beginning of the first page). How high is that in the Mrob's Standard MSMS Scale? MSMS Or maybe it just re-blitzes the whole thread and we have to wait for it?

MSMS or was it MSMS Standard Mustard Scale?

@HES: Binnek - I like it. Even though (or perhaps even because) it does not have two necks.

@azule: I think Pengoat is a great word for the number 39. That would make the poster in that position the Pengoath. And four squared is sixteen, half of which is eight, whence Octameter. Or halfwhence Octameter, the other half being meter being measured in feet (while meters are measured in Paris - by a meter meter, of course).

azule wrote:Can anyone agree that pengoat can be the name of the pengoatimate poster? Are goat's ever in pens? Is a pen not just a writing utensil? Is a utensil not just a fork and spoon and such?

Sure, that works. I was thinking antegoat but it would be more fun to use antepengoat, antepengoatimate for the 37th post (again counting the Pope as #0).
In the interest of ni, ni, ni-irregularity, for the verb "to cause (someone/thing) to be the pengoat", I would lean towards foregoat (in analogy to foretell or foreshadow), or pregoat (in analogy to preclude or presuppose).

Goat is not a molpy, right, but what is a goatH's OTT name?

My automeme lexicon has GOATPY.

I'd name a giraffe a TRILOMEG (or perhaps TRIMEGAN), because its height is roughly three Megans. The altogether fiercer acrocanthosaurus, of slightly greater height, would be a TRICEROCUE. The T-Rex would of course be some OTTification of PENRAPTOR, "chief raptor" (which itself isn't OTTish enough).

azule wrote:When you say giraffe should be foursquare (which I missed the step that got you there) [...]

@ucim said the giraffeH is "sixteen heretical feet" (in height), which is 4×4 feet or 42, "four squared" in my high school algebra class, thus "foursquare".

The image on the right is not klapaucius (He IS on it but tiny). This one is: [...]

Oh you're right! That's Trurl's electronic bard! (Funny how the Bard looks a lot more like it was made to look like Klapaucius than its creator Trurl)
(By the way, I have already done some work on that story, with the working title The First Journey (A) - or - Mrorl's OTTronic Bard. But there is a framing story to do first. How Time Was Saved was the introductory story; I would then do either Mrorl's Machine or A Thorough Pelting to segue into the Journeys.)

I wanted to comment that not only the quoted attachments' filenames but also the original non-resized attachments' filenames are mr*bdex'd. For example this.

Yes, because the name of the file appears in plaintext. It says "kxa.PNG (2.75 KiB) Viewed 2519 times", in text anyone can read if they open the Spoiler. The numbers are ignored; 'png' is already in the dictionary, 'kib' is tagged as a newword at OTT:2:27, and 'viewed' and 'times' are normal words.
We were talking about OTT:1938:28, where there is no such text. I don't know why there is no text on that one, and why there is text in OTT:2102:1, you'll have to examine the phpBB code. I hear you have some phpBB code on the moonbase, maybe it's commented? (hah! )

The mr*bdex is empty (ETA: except the beginning of the first page) [...]

We åpoløgise again før the faült in the mr*bdex. The bøts constructed to cøntinue the mr*bdex after the øther bots had been deactivåted, wish it to be known that they have just been deactivåted. The mr*bdex häs been cømpleted in an entirely different style at great expense and at the last minute.

How high is that in the Mrob's Standard MSMS Scale?MSMS
...
MSMSor was it MSMS Standard Mustard Scale?

The acronym is recursive both ways, in some sort of quantum-mustardy overlapping wavefunction sort of way, which is how we get fractal Mustard ratings. To answer the first question, I'd say the mr*bdex right now rates about a
.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.Image.
f(m)=∮f(f(x)-f(-x))∂x

on the MSMS, which is not a number in the ordinary sense of the word, however it most certainly is NUMBERWONGGH.

That's exactly how bothasar_p introduces himself in the useragent when bftfposting.

I asked him for his formal title, and that's what he said I could use.

I really mean it. I actually just now, within the last half-nopix or so, modified the bots that create mrob.com to add the capability to tag RHTF defined-style-symbols with CSS class names so I can get cross-platform backwards-compatible blinking text in the mr*bdex. I hope you like it!

A BOTCASTLE IS WOWTERFUL TOO

balthasar_s wrote:So will these filenames be mr*bdexed or ignored? This kind of text is inside a <dl class="file"> which is inside a <div class="inline-attachment">.

That kind of text is indexed. I don't pay attention to whether it's inside those types of HTML tags, I only pay attention to whether it's text that is visible to the human reader.

The filename in OTT:2102:1 is visible to a human reader, will be counted as word(s), and "kxa" will be eligible as a newword (until @kxa actually posts to the OTT, because then they "become an OTTer" and OTTers' names are not counted as newwords). But any hidden filenames, like in OTT:1938:28, are not seen by a human reading the OTT so they are not counted as word(s).

For overthoroughness and in case anyone else wants to see what we're talking about, I have manually reformatted the HTML of both posts, and added comments and proper indentation.

Here is the HTML in post OTT:1938:28 :

(Both are by you, but the signatures differ because once a page is done I keep it: no re-downloading like ЯОЯЯІМ ƎНТ does.)
In both cases I have marked the spoilered attachment with a comment that says "<— === ### SCROLL TO HERE ### === —>". So scroll both codeboxes to that point. They both have a <dt> element containing the image, but the second one also has text inside a <dd> element. That text is visible to the human reader so it counts.

When you click "preview" on the mirror or on one of the chronotransponders and then view the generated page's source you can follow the bbcode to html convesrsion process in one of the comments.

Wow, that's pretty neat, I just tried it! Unfortunately, here we're trying to figure out what it does with the [attachmént] tag, and when I try to include something like [attachmént=0]something.png[/attachmént] in a mustardpost, the ƨ'ЯОЯЯІМ ТТО preview does not do anything with it:

Code: Select all

Build BBcode tree:

text: convert this:<br/>
tag: [attachment=0]
unknown tag
text: something.png
tag: [/attachment]
unmatched

generate HTML:
name: post value: Re:&#32;1190:&#32;&#34;Time&#34; elements: 4
text: convert this:<br/>
text: [attachment=0]
text: something.png
text: [/attachment]
But we already knew that, you've told us that there is no uploading of attachments to ЯОЯЯІМ ƎНТ.

We'll have to use some other method of figuring out why one of the above messages includes the text inside the <dd> tag and the other does not. It might be as simple as the fact that one attachment image is smaller.

I can post from my new leopad, yay! It's very treeish. My mobile organised sand seems rather riverish now.

A thought: there's a subforum for xkcd meetups. Should we have a needle pulled thing there? Just an announcement linking to the relevant posts, for any OTTers who haven't been in these parts lately. Or did this happen and I forgot about it?

I fail to see how that is an obstacle to make an unpronouncable standard.
