 No, but the article was fun to read.

Hi @Kieryn, nice to hear from you!

News from Mrorl

Mrorl has discovered an unusual transmission coming from the Earth. After some analysis, and meta-analysis on his newly-constructed meta-meta-analyzer, Mrorl came to the conclusion that this transmission was not in fact from Earth, but was a reflection of a signal originating on the Moon. The transmission contains text, and is not encoded so is clearly meant to be for the entire Universe as audience. Recent bits of the message include:

Code: Select all

 ...

 20150128.2224 UTC 0010                               ʷʬʬʬʷ    |
 20150129.0314 UTC 0011                               /___\    c
 20150129.0617 UTC 0012                               ȣ    Ƥoº
 20150129.1111 UTC 0013                              oº

Mrorl identified this as the very 'mrobongs' my bots have been sending. So he sent one of his smaller and more faithful messenger-bots to deliver this news to me.
The little perky bot gave me an idea. I have now installed a modification to my bots that modulate and encode the mr*bdex message. It takes about 4 nopix for a new line of text to be sent. During this time, the bots will look at this page and collect all lines into a file (also maintaining a history of all previously-seen lines). They try multiple times, so even if 1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info is temporarily inaccessible it will still notice a new line of text as long as it's available at least once during the 4 or 5 attempts that are made during the 4-hour period.
If, at the beginning of the next 4-nopix period the latest mrobong line has still not been seen in mrobdexmessage.txt, then I will not send a new text string but will instead let the current text string go on for another 4 hours.
That means that mrobdexmessage.txt is now more reliable: you can count on it to contain all information sent via the mr*bdex message, because I won't add a new line to the mr*bdex message until I have seen all previous lines (on at least one prior attempt) at 1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info.
So I can now change my answer to the question:
balthasar_s wrote: will it ONG if the last message was not received and decoded yet?

Previously I said "No", but was incorrect. I changed reality to agree with my answer. The correct answer is now "No". :)

welp, just spent about an hour reminiscing about drawception games. thanks BG.

I keep wanting to get back into it, but every time I play I get frustrated with drawing with a mouse, or with prompts I don't know what to draw for.

I haven't played for like a year! I was intending to get myself a graphics tablet ASAP so I could do it better, and that coupled with the fact my touchpad has gone m*stardy (it's sort of risen out of its hole and now it won't physically click so I have to set it to touch click which is annoying) put me on a hiatus for a while. I still haven't got round to buying that tablet. XD

Yeah, Drawception's one of those things where you can get really into it for a while, and then fall out of it for mips. I had about a six-mip hiatus last yip, until a PM by Klear (who's active both here on the fora and on Drawception) got me to check it out again.

Yes, but a WaterOtterMolpy Friend Funding Supplier just doesn't sound right.

I mean, it makes some sense if interpreted as said WOM supplying funds to a friend, but the other interpretation is just plain wrong. No WOM (or OTTer of any variety) I know of would need funds to acquire friends.

This is probably a bad idea. I have taken a lot of math classes, and I'm not a mathephobe or anything, but it has been about a million year since I've done math-y stuff. Plus my math is all singular. :D

Thanks for the molpish words, yappo, ED mrob and ucim. @ED, it had been 7 or 8 yips for me as well. This caught me completely off-guard. @ucim, Are you sure you didn''t get that story from a romantic comedy you saw. :) Seriously, that's a great story.

Lu wrote:Was the crypticness cleared out for you?

Mostly. I have to remember you're probably quoting song lyrics.

Making a change is something that I'm thinking a lot about doing. Just not sure how to do it.

PuzzleMaster wrote:The thing I want to point out is that the stroked l character (a lowercase Ł, which sounds like a "w" in English) is UTF-8 encoded, so it is turned into a string of two bytes C5 82. The rot13 does nothing to these two bytes because they are not regular ASCII letters a-z or A-Z. The binary encoding turns them into 8 bits each (with the high bits set because they're UTF-8), or 16 bits total for the "ł" which is Unicode character U+0142.
There will be more non-ASCII characters in the message so I just want to make sure this is noticed. I don't think there's any mustard to fix.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I won't be any help in solving this puzzle. I basically understand all the words in that paragraph, but when I read it as a whole, my brain goes, "Huh?"

No such thing.

Is that a joke? I don't get it.

Oh, silly square-glasses guy. So naive. And you should listen to kxa and post. Don't fear the OTTers!

Thanks for linking to that Kickstarter page, Sciscitor. I agree about the comments section. It's pretty molpish. And I love their video. I was a little disturbed about the exploding kittens aspect, but they addressed that steakishly. (which I guess means well-donely, but whatevs.)

BG, that was a great Drawception game.

Here is California we are having what people are calling "Juneuary." Warm sunny days. It's beautiful, but we'll be ch*rped if we don't get some rain soon.

In Bochum-related news, and for decree, Bochum has a Starlight Express Theater showing Starlight Express. (It's an early Andrew Lloyd Webber musical). This is funny/amazing/wonderful to me. Nobody ever performs that musical because of the roller skating. This may be the only chance I have to see a fully-staged production, so I'm pretty sure I have to go. Anyone want to join me?

edited to make it degree-related.

There in São Paulo (capital) they're already considering a 2 days with water/5 without policy as an extreme measure. And in the rest of the country we had to activate the thermal power plants meaning our energy bills are a lot higher now.

Quoting style has changed again. Can you guess why?

Yikes. We haven't been anywhere near that here, although some communities not too far away had no tap water. What happens next summer will depend on rainfall in the next couple of months.

Also also Lu wrote:Quoting style has changed again. Can you guess why?

Well, when I quote things the way you were quoting them, it's usually because of problems with my organized sand. With you, however, I imagine it's something much more interesting.

Here's a brief ottification of the Dylan tune "Blowin' in the Wind" (video is *ndish, btw), based on recent (and past) experience. (And why my last post didn't get posted yesterdip):

That sounds like a good idea. I need to travel from wherever the Eurostar dumps me to the sustainable university, to any weepend activities, to a hamply in Hamburg, and from there back to a Eurostar port. Can a German advise if a rail pass is the best option to do this?

Late reply, hope it is still useful. To begin with, please be aware that the German Rail Pass which ED linked to is not available to UK residents.

Do you already have a ticket for the Eurostar? If yes, to where - Brussels? Or Cologne? If not, it may be the easiest way to book through tickets London to Bochum for the outward journey and Hamburg to London for the return journey from Deutsche Bahn. (Special offers by Eurostar or Deutsche Bahn, like this one, are usually subject to limited availability, and the contingents for travel dates in mid-February seem to be already sold out by now.)

After that, you might want to reconsider whether it is worthwhile to buy a rail pass for the remainder of your travels in Germany or just go with regular tickets. Of course, the flexibility of a rail pass is also worth a lot. For UK and other European foreign residents, Interrail passes are available; if in one form or another you have your journeys from England to some place in Germany and vice versa already covered otherwise, the Interrail One Country Pass for Germany could be interesting for you which offers you flexible travel on 3, 4, 6 or 8 days within 1 month.

[Edit: For completeness, rail passes available to non-European residents:
  • German Rail Pass
  • Eurail Pass if you need to cover more than just Germany (Eurail One Country Pass not available for Germany, but see above)
]

Depending on your choice of wipend activities, local ticket offers, e. g. regional day passes, may be more cost-efficient than using one day of travel of an Interrail pass. On Saturdays and Sundays, the "Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket" offers you unlimited travel on all local and regional trains operated by DB, and certain other operators, throughout all of Germany for the whole day for 40 EUR per day and person.

Some other links, all in English:
Hope this helps, and see you in Bochum!

(question for me is mostly whether it is feasible to travel the same day or if i need to do it on Wednesday.)

It will probably start around 10:00 local time on Thursday 12th.

There is no definite schedule yet. We are still busy trying to get the travelling organised for all speakers. (It's getting more difficult over Time. *sob*)

Wait for it.

Your work is highly appreciated!

I am going to attend the conference and hopefully will join whatever OTTer-meetup-related activities there will be surrounding the conference. FYI (and anyone else's who is interested), I am not going to hold a speech and have already made my own plans and arrangements regarding travel and accomodation. I'll arrive on the late afternoon or the evening of the 11th and will depart again on the 14th.

Considering it...

In other news, I am now ketched up all the way from NP 2184! Finally a mini-Blitz that I have completed, it's been a while...

Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

Addams thanks all of us who helped. Her life is much better now.
