Hello,

Just popping my head out of the basement to say that I somehow ended up buying an Apple watch, and in order to rationalise my purchase I'm going to write apps for it, and since there's no hope of making a billion dollars with a fart app, I'll start by getting it to tell Time, even though apparently there isn't a way to add a watch face for the lowercase-t time app yet. I never used the existing Time apps (for… Android and pebble?) so I don't know quite what they do, but I figured there should be a Glance where you can see the current timeframe/newpix/oh ch*rp my otterish is musty, where 'current' is either 'whichever np would be on now if the first one were at midnight and the whole story went by in a day, probably pretending that longpix and regular newpix were the same just for the sake of simplicity in the first version' or 'whichever newpix would be showing if the story had repeated in real-Time after the E**' and then if you tap on that you can swipe to later/earlier newpix or something.

So I'm just wondering, has anyone already written an iOS app to do something like that (in which case the watch app should use that, because there needs to be an iOS app to go with it anyway) and does anyone have any specific ideas (perhaps copied from the Time apps on other devices which I haven't seen) about what the watch app should do?

It might take Time since despite doing Cocoa development since 2001 I've never even got around to writing an iOS app yet (I blame having day jobs! But I don't have one now, so anything is possible.) What better thing is there to learn with? I'm also a bit out-of-touch with the OTT as well as being out of Cocoa Touch, so if there's anything I don't know about which would be particularly awesomeful on a wrist-mounted computer, let me know.

WHITE BUNNY USED OTTIFY! IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!

Postby mrob27 » Thu Apr 30, 2015 1:52 am UTC

@Angelastic: There was an Android app by @drewhannay, see discussions at OTT:147:11, OTT:177:17, and OTT:216:13 (were xey announced that the source code was on github, and it's still there.)
There was also the "OTC live wallpaper" for Android by @Wildhound: OTT:992:10, OTT:998:26, OTT:1027:11, OTT:1052:8. It wasn't simply displaying the current frame because xe says xe was using @mscha's site to discover the frame hash.
Regarding Apple's custom watch face restriction: Perhaps choosing a Time frame based on the time of day might be too close for comfort. However, you could easily provide an iOS app that chooses a Time frame in many different ways, including random, various different speeds in forward or reverse, real time (like my replay viewer), or based on the phase of Jupiter's moon Europa as seen from Ganymede, or whatever. Apple can't prevent you from making the iOS app choose the Time frame based on the time of day. To differentiate it from "just another repackaging of web content" you could style the app as a presentation of the Hugo-award winning graphic story by Randall Munroe, which of course has a license allowing this use. Then you just make a Watch app (which would essentially just be a single Glance) that is a mirror of the current Time frame displayed by the iOS app.

a response. Balthacarius promised to fulfill the request; his plan, he assured the Mod, represented a radical departure from the accepted principles of online combat. What kind of assault -- he asked first -- always emerged victorious? The one that had the loudest and most redolent language, whilst leaving as much as possible up to the whims of the reader's subconscious mind; full of sensational but barely-understandable words expressing ideas that are vague at least, and $REDUNDANT$ at best; in short, precision-engineered nonsense. @@Simidirkar and his deputies had long known this, of course; but Balthacarius continued: By cross-indexing every thread to every other, and using a coördinated army of bots to cross-index every bit of flaming with every bit of trolling, analysing the effectiveness of each response, and tracing the likelihood of a counter-response to each possible option, he proposed to perfect online tactics to a science. But the enemy is fiendishly clever and infinitely adaptable, so merely recombining past offenses into new campaigns is not enough; leading to the brilliant insight of the famous *Gontalmannas*, who was faced with a similar challenge in a war-beseiged kingdom of an Aforewhen long forgotten. Gontalmannas proposed to innovate by combining and adapting every word, phrase, and image with every other, making everything $RELATED$, by a process Balthacarius proudly and reverently called -- after an extended dramatic pause -- %*bOTTification*%.
Balthacarius' name for his proposal was cleverly chosen to be at once tantalising and absolutely inscrutable; @@Simidirkar immediately asked seven more questions without taking a breath, proving that even the great Mod himself had been trolled by the suggestion. I WENT TO A SPAAACE AND A LAPLEOPARD ALMOST BROKE OUT.

Postby lmjb1964 » Thu Apr 30, 2015 10:07 pm UTC

I’d like to thank G. F. Handel for writing music that has timpani in it, but only in a few places. It means I can spend a lot of time at rehearsal OTTing. (The piece is Israel in Egypt, btw.) Still have this page (NP 2302) to read. And all those other pages I skipped.

Loved the new installment from Caprice!

I see that svenman
Has wikified the haiku.
He is awesomeful!

I like zooming in and out on the NotAnOTTer map. It’s kinda trippy watching the icons splitting up and then coalescing. And one of these days I’ll have to listen to the songs in Lu’s Odetity list.

I’m enjoying ED’s dictionary entries.

Wow, thanks for identifying the bftf characters, Sustainabilizer!

And also for the data, EOM.

Wow, I had no idea I was the “it” everyone was waiting for! Although I might have guessed it, since, I’m sorry to say, people who meet up with me often have to do some waiting. I’m sorry azule and his wonderful young’un had to wait so long for me. :( And it’s not exactly like I said, “Oh, you have a small child? Let’s go to a winery! No? How about a casino?” Here’s what happened:
Spoiler:
I was going up north with my BF to do some wine tasting with a friend who lives up there. Through PMs with azule, I found out he was near-ish to where I was going to be. But since I was traveling with three other people (there was supposed to be someone else, but they bailed) and I didn’t know when I was going to be where, it was hard to make plans. So I figured we would plan to meet up somewhere in the late afternoon. He called me and told me he was in this town that I knew nothing about. He said pizza was a good option, and my friend said, “Hey, there’s a pizza place in the casino there!” Turns out it was the loudest, more expensive pizza place I’d ever been to. So poor azule and little azule were waiting in this noisy place for us to arrive. (Although little azule created some lovely artwork.) Now that I read azule’s account, I feel kind of like a jerk. We should have let azule pick the place, instead of three people who don’t have kids, and also not have made hime Wait so long for It (me.)
I didn’t take lmjbot. Why didn’t I? Little azule would have liked to see her.
Anyway, it was very treeish to meet azule, and I think it’s awesomeful that I have so many OTTers in my phone’s contact list.
azule, I don’t think you did :azule:. Well, maybe you did. It was more of a :little azule:.

Hi, pelrigg! My a cappella group did a version of “One After 909.” Good luck with the move. I should take SBN’s advice and “Get rid of stuff,” but I’m so bad about that.

A random hello to Febrion. I’m pretty much always confused.

What does it mean when a thread is necroed?

More ketchup later. Hm, when I saw the pagepopepost, I could have sworn one of the decrees was “Embaggening.” Did I really misread that? I better get bag to the optometrist and have my eyes checked.

Believe it or not, it's in the OTTsford Molpish Dictionary! :)

I could have sworn one of the decrees was “Embaggening.” Did I really misread that?

In case anyone was wondering, I said "Entaggening", both as a pun on "Embaggening", and also referring to my recent confusion about @Caprice's video "tags", which turned out to actually be "Keywords", which turned out to actually be invisible, unless you look in the HTML or something.

DISREGARD THAT, I RETRONINJASPOILER CHUPAMOLPIES

Postby lmjb1964 » Thu Apr 30, 2015 10:45 pm UTC

Oops. sorry about the doublepost.

Is this the first bftfColored? :)

Hm, what WILL happen to lmjbot? Maybe she'll take a well-deserved vacation, and take up some of the hobbies she's been wanting to explore. I wonder what a bot's hobbies would be. I should ask her.

Or maybe she'll find some other things to post!

You helped Addams stay in her home, and gave her a better life. She thanks you, and so do I.

Now, when I had to stop my blitz, bothasar_s had to stop generating reports for me.
So he went back to his hobby.
Which is ridind his bike in circles and pretending he's teleporting (to the same place where he already is, that's why you don't notice anything.)

Good luck, my blitzing friends!

I think probably Lucy Liu is at fault for that.

It's in reference to a relevant othercomic: https://xkcd.com/979/
Assuming that's the post you mean.

Wowterfalls! this OMD is awesomeful! Is this new, or did I miss it's initial release? I just got lost in it, reminiscing on the origins of so many words, and control-effing to find out which ones I had a part in. RELATED to misunderstandings (on my part) and Aluisio are the origins of 'Lu' and 'Lucy' :

I made my avatar, Buffygirl hatted it, Yappo smileyed it and ggh taroted it!
I've changed, witnessing this thing so beautiful

Good luck on blitzing, katakissa, username5243, musthavebeenmykarma, iskinner, thunk, GnomeAnne, and quantized ! Keep the signposts coming, we love em in the now!

Nope, Rosetta is not the narrator. (And yes, Rosetta will most likely have a strong foreign accent. Not sure what kind, but probably Spanish.) And as for the other theories, you'll just have to...

Well then here's the flipside of my ancient notebook page:
Catamaran: what the cat did when the dog chased it
Pencil: a ledge to keep pens on
Apricot: where baby gorillas sleep
Wallet: an undersized wall
Carper: a domestic animal for your automobile
Tractor: the road ripped
Substance: how a submarine is standing

That is a non-OTT but rest-of-XKCD-forums word. It means that a thread is brought back to life after a long time of being dead (for example half a yip, as with the "Randall Munroe facts" thread).
