I do wish there was an easy way to go find the posts as they make it through moderation. Mine yesterday took about 6 hours, though I think they got through a backlog, since it seems later ones came faster. (Serious props to the moderators all the way around.) I just know I've missed things, but they are now interspersed in the previous posts and it seems daunting to go back through 40 pages looking for new gems.

I went back and edited my edit to indicate that page 25 is no longer dangerous. And because I couldn't believe my next post was after page 41, I checked, and found this gem. 40 pages was daunting? How little I knew then.

For the current decree, the wolpies may think there is a conspiracy this weekend, since I'm expecting some pyrotechnics in the neighborhood. Nothing official, just people with more money than sense.

Stay safe everymolpy.

I would follow the decree, but they might be watching.

Treeish to see ChronosDragon starting to rematerialize. And I wonder if web 3.0 will be the last generation of web, replaced by the Appverse. It's easier to trigger the decree when you have full control of the target's system, as opposed to playing in a browser sandbox.

It gives me a warm feeling to see mscha here in the flesh. And I love seeing the OTTcoloreds when they pop up. There are some very wingish ones - Whizbang had quite a run. And the making of the t1i is fascinating. So much detail! So much thought gone into them! That steak is burnt to a crisp!

Speaking of steak, there is much in mrob's BFTF Otty! And wow - so much detail in baltimore's BFTF itself! I think I may have missed a few Botteriadas though, I'm going to have to go back and reblitz a few, to eliminate packet loss.

Just got to the end of page 30, by the end of the second day. The speculations that "Time will end with comic 1191" built up, but were proven false.

Also on page 30 there was another edit from the future from buffygirl, warning of the unspoilered frame on page 41 (it's the third post on that page, apparently). When I reach page 41, I'll know this, unless the person who made that post fixed it.

I'm writing the following, which I'm sure you know, only because it now seems necessary to explain what you're responding to:
Sure, I know that, but I have to deal with a forum full of people who don't appreciate (or are even incapable of typing) diacriticals that are not related to the Germanic umlaut. For example, I see "cafe" instead of "café". It is far more common for those sort of people to leave off a diaeresis/trema/umlaut rather than using the correct ae/Ae, oe/Oe, or ue/Ue. English makes it slightly worse because of its use of the diacritic, like the mark above the second "o" in "coöperate", and the grave mark in "lovèd", both of which are okay to just remove.

the mr*bdex story cONGtinues.

Code: Select all

They were silent. Nip had fallen and the village lights were flickering on, one by one. Suddenly Mrorl said:
"Listen, here's an idea. Surely you've noticed how *surreal* this world is, full of things that make no sense, fitting together in precisely the ways they shouldn't. What if we make the hotdog use all the elements of this world, but fit together differently -- or randomly -- and dynamically rearranging? The hotdog will appear to be the real world, the King's world, full of Woolly Jumpers and Crystal Streams and Glass Spades and Safety Pumpkins and Negators and all the rest, but nothing will fit the way he is accustomed. In short, we'll make his world as surreal to him as it actually is to us!"
"Clever. But as soon as he gets wise to what we've done, he'll feed *us* into the Negator! It's him or us, Mrorl, you can't get around it."
Again they were silent. Finally Mrorl said:
"The only way out of this steambottle, as far as I can see, is to have the hotdog assimilate the King, and then --"
"You don't have to say another word. Yes, that's not at all a bad idea... Then for a ransom we -- haven't you noticed, old friend, that the Propbots here have more Spare Tools?" concluded Balthacarius, for just then some servants had arrived to switch on the veranda's beautiful Glassed Lightning lamps. "There's still a problem though," he continued when they were alone again. "Assuming the hotdog can do what you say, how will we be able to negotiate with the hotdogger if we're sitting in a basement ourselves?"
"You have a point there," said Mrorl. "We'll have to figure some way for them to send a message... The main thing, however, is the algorithm schema!"
"Any child knows that! What's a self-reorganising hotdog without an algorithm schema?"

Interesting bftfbutterdream.

I was having some related dreams recently.
And then I was awake and the dreamlike thinking continued.

There was a bftf-related hotdog.
For two players.
Two computers connected with a serial null-modem cable.
One player plays on the Moon the other one on Earth.
They have to cooperate.

For decree (kind of): I finally fixed some <computery-stuff> mustard,

And I'm writing the following, which I'm sure you know, only for sake of completeness – for SCIENCE. :)

Your mrobdex and your OTTsford Molpish Dictionary and all the other OTT resources you created are extremely useful, steakish, and awesomeful. When I'm erbsenzähling it's because I think that you are (like me ;)) one of those who are always looking for further improvements which make awesomeful things even more steakish.

mrob27 wrote: Sure, I know that, but I have to deal with a forum full of people who don't appreciate (or are even incapable of typing) diacriticals that are not related to the Germanic umlaut.

Of course. For <computery stuff> purposes such as searching, your method is virtually the only one which makes sense.
Spoiler:
I don't know whether my thoughts are easy (or even desirable) to implement, but IMHO it would be molpish to have a searchable link from the search pattern “otterconnchen“ back to the original term “OTTerCönnchen”, so if someone searches for the original term “OTTerCönnchen“, xe finds the mrobdex pattern “otterconnchen”.

This is not really important for ASCII-based characters (like “ö”), but it might be for Japanese terms or for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics.

Redundant: The above is intended as a source of inspiration. If it doesn't do that, be welcome to forget about everything I wrote here. ;)

If anyone is interested what kind of <computery stuff> it is:
(not related)
Spoiler:
The computer is an Amiga 500. I got it for free when I bought an IDE controller for my previous Amiga 500.
When I opened its case I noticed that it has a rev.8a.1 motherboard. Which means that it is actually an Amiga 500+ downgraded (less memory, old ROM, no RTC) and sold as a 500. I also quickly discovered that the caps lock LED was missing, some keys were not working, the serial port could not send but only receive (a broken voltage conversion IC).
I fixed those things.

It was downgraded but it still had the Enhanced Chipset. Which means that it can generate super high resolution video (1280x512i or 1280x256p) and support 2MB of chip RAM instead of just one.
I bought the missing memory chips. I soldered four chips in the free slots. Then I had 1MB and not 512kB anymore.
The other 1MB is usually connected through a memory expansion connected to a slot on the motherboard.
I didn't have it. So I just soldered another 8 chips on top of the previous 8. Just one pin connected differently (that's the yellow wire, also seen here, and the other yellow wire which is now white). Then I had 2MB.
But I was sometimes getting memory errors.
Or sometimes it diddn't see all of its memory.
But everything seemed to be soldered correctly.

Recently I came back to it. A memory test software showed that errors appear only in 2 of the 16 data bits (but later I discovered that this was just a result of the order in which the software was checking the memory), and only on the second and fourth 512kB of the address space. The original, first 512kB were unaffected.
Finally I identified that the paths for RAS (row address strobe) signals are broken. I bypassed the paths, the JP3 jumper (which I opened) and the resistors and now it works.

I think that was the reason the previous owner gave it for free with the IDE controller, he couldn't get his memory expansions to work.

This is the same computer that I use as the video signal source for a device that I was working on since soon after the beginning of Time (but not all the time - I made an almost one year long break), you can notice an early version in WHYDTMT. This is a device that converts the video signal to be VGA-compatible. That is also the project I did for my thesis (that's how it's called?) for the end of my studies, which I finished writing 4 days ago.

The German language is lucky to at least have those two letter replacements.

BRACE YOURSELVES, MR*BDEX IS COMING

Postby mrob27 » Sat Jul 04, 2015 8:13 pm UTC

Thanks for the Erbsenzaehlend ideas, @Sustainabilizer!
My index has all sorts of problems and needs lots of ideas. It really started with the 2013 Mâdnèss. I didn't want "bétter" to count as a newword. Having a list of words like małpy (that should be left alone), and another list of words like BlïtzGirl (that need to be changed in some way), would allow for a better index but would tax me beyond my patience. Maybe some words are treated one way in some posts, but treated differently later on. Do you imagine a way to fix all mis-spellings, like "randal's"? As it stands, clicking on certain newword links, like the otterconnchen link that we're concerned with right now, takes you to the post but does not even highlight the word (because I have deliberately changed the spelling). Not all people are able to figure that out, but at least most of the highlights work. Mine suffers from other problems, like being broken up into 21 pieces (and growing with Time). To deal with that I created an alphabetised index of newwords, which sadly highlights some of its many other problems. It's the best I can do. Anyone is welcome to make their own OTT index and newwords list (sadly, Kieryn's is gone now).

I have never seen anything like “lovèd” before.

It's found in poetry, including Shakespeare:

And jealous Oberon would have the child
Knight of his train, to trace the forests wild.
But she perforce withholds the lovèd boy,
Crowns him with flowers, and makes him all her joy.

    A Midsummer Night's Dream II. 1

The grave accent in "modern" English means that the vowel is pronounced, not silent. Typically it is a way to get an extra syllable, like in this quoted example. If the e in "loved" is not meant to be pronounced (as in Shakespeare's Sonnet 116) it might be spelled "lov'd", leaving out the e entirely to make it clear. In the above passage one sometimes finds flow'rs for that reason. These days "no-one" uses the grave accent in this way, but high school students and English majors stumble across it anyway.

t1i – Shipping T** **d

Postby SilentTimer » Sat Jul 04, 2015 10:01 pm UTC

One year ago, SilentTimer wrote:

These are the last frames of t1i.
T** **d is nigh.

The reason why t1i exists is that T** **d of Time didn't fully satisfy me.
I want to do better.

But how?
Spoiler:

Right! That's about how it should have ended!
Or how the sequel should end!

Yeah. That's about how it will **d.

The Beanies are taking La Cueganpetite with them.
On a ship.

What kind of ship?

The Beanies are an advanced culture. Judging from their theodolites and their surveying methods they have about the technical level of our culture in the 19th century. (And judging from Rosetta's behaviour towards Cuegan, the social level of their culture outclasses ours.)

Human population in the OTC appears rather low, so it's a plus if a ship needs only a small crew.

There's no indication that they have any kind of motor, so their most advanced water vessels must be either galleys or sailing ships.

Image

(All images by Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons; click on the images)

Galleys need a lot of rowers. Their hard and dangerous job doesn't suit Beanish culture.

So it's a sailing ship.

How did the most advanced sailing ships in our history look like?

Image Image

The clippers and tall ships from the golden age of sail come to mind first. Their characteristic square rigs give them speed. Full-rigged ships have them on all masts.

Barques were even more popular. They have square rigs on all masts except the last one.

Image Image

Hmm… why?

If there's already a mast, why not attach another square rig to it?
What can be the advantage of doing without that?

Furthermore, from early Roman times until 14th century, most ships in the Mediterranean were lateen-rigged.

Image

Ships of that type were still popular in the Mediterranean even in the 19th century, when everyone else was using full-rigged ships and barques. Again, why?

Square rigs run faster than fore-and-aft rigs (such as lateens), but they are less manoeuvrable. In the Mediterranean manoeuvrability can be more important than speed – in particular after the Zanclean flood, when the sea currents aren't well-known.

In addition, square rigs require a larger crew than fore-and-aft rigs.

When manoeuvrability and small crews are more important than speed, schooners, where all sails are fore-and-aft, are preferable over full-rigged ships, which are optimised for square rigs.

Image Image

And barques became popular because they strike a balance between full-rigged ships and schooners.

The difference in the crew size is remarkable. The Preußen, the most seaish full-rigged ship, was operated by 38 to 42 able seamen and shipboys. The most seaish schooner, the Thomas W. Lawson, was even more seaish, but needed just 10 to 12 able seamen.

Image Image

(Both ships had motors to operate the ropes.)

So the Beanies use a fore-and-aft rig. A lateen? Or maybe its modern successor, the Bermuda rig?

Image

A Bermuda rig makes sense with modern materials for masts, canvas, and ropes, which the Beanies don't have. (All petroleum has been used up long before their Time. Sorry for that.)

But there's another ENHANCEment of the lateen, the junk rig. Its history goes back about as far as that of the lateen, but its properties are measuring up to to those of the Bermuda rig. It even has some advantages: It's easier to build, safer to operate, and can be handled by an even smaller crew.

Image

OK. So the Beanies have a junk. Let's build her.

Up to now, Beanish technology looks mostly western. So let's start with a western ship.

The Lady Washington has an appropriate size and style.

Image

First, let's turn the body into a silhouette.

Image

The Lady Washington is a full-rigged ship with two masts, a brig. To turn her into a junk the masts must be continuous, without topmasts. On the other hand, they may be more riverish. Together with the yard, the sail will be seaish enough.

Image Image

Let's take the reefed sails from this junk.

Image Image

The ropes are complicated. Cuegan will love them.

Image Image

Now let's add Beanish flags to both masts.

Image

Next, let's hoist the main sail. The halyard, the luff hauling parrel, and some sheets move; the topping lift stays in place. (And so does the standing rigging, of course.)

Image

Under full canvas, we also have a jib.

Image

I like this ship. :)

Image

Hmm… what was it for, again?

SilentTimer wrote:Yeah. That's about how it will **d.

T** **d is nigh!

On 26 July 2013, SilentTimer wrote: Yes, Time was one of the greatest pieces of art I have ever seen, but T** **d was not satisfying. Too sudden.

Exactly. Too sudden.

So let's go all out to make T** **d of t1i as gentle as an **d can ever be.
  • Let the title text change to “…” as soon as it's mostly clear how this story will **d.
  • Zoom out.
  • Let the title text change to “(you know what)” as soon as there's nothing left which can realistically go wrong.
  • Adumbrate what will happen next, and that everything will be fine.
  • Show a ship sailing away as a typical “**d” sequence.
  • Zoom out further.
  • Show the **ding title only after all this.
  • Append a sequence of exactly 5 epilogue frames, so everyone can easily imagine them as an eternal epilogue.
  • I also have some ideas for some “bonus” frames for special occasions. Maybe I'll find time to draw them. Wait for it.
Yeah. This is as close to mscha's **d frame as the story permits.

Let's draw it like that.

*draws*

I like the result. :)

The ship under canvas looks really treeish.
*imagines how it sails into the sunset*
But they are setting sail in the morning, not in the evening!
Ch*rp it. They'll be afloat for long enough to see a sunset.
Wait for it.

It's all related
Great shirt! It is all related: the Wellington Zoo just got a new set of otters, which I'll post a pic of after I download it from the camera. When one of the previous two otters died, they shipped off the other one so she would have some company. They then moved the little blue penguins into the otter enclosure, where they got to enjoy some mighty fine swimming. When the Little Wonder and I went to the zoo on Thursday, we got to see the new otters looking all friendly and curious in their new home. The penguins were back in their old enclosure, which is kinda just a pit with a puddle. I imagined them planning (Madagascar styles) to sneak back into the cushy otter digs and retake it.

Yes, this would have that rust problem too, but as an alternative to kevlar/fiberglass/gold/diamond, you can also <shudder> just lower your standards. The Little Wonder rides her plastic motorcycle in the sea, and after two summers the metal parts are showing some rust, but still functional. My old 3-speed was regularly stored outside and ridden down the well-salted roads of wintertime New Jersey, and it lasted ages. She weren't much to look at, but she was such a heavy thing that a little rust wasn't going to bring her down anytime quick.

My approach would be to map all diacriticalled letters to a plain equivalent, and consder that the "base state", the others being "isotopes". "Małpy" would be mapped to "Malpy", and found in the dictionary that way. Then the dictionary would have a list of isotopes that actually occur in the wild.

It does have the disadvantage of mismapping a few words ("ano" and "año" have very different meanings!) but it's a small price to pay, and the original would be indicated as the isotope found in the wild.

Keep an eye on the cables though. I had a tenspeed that was left out for a few months; speeding down a hill on a busy roadway in California my shift cable broke. Could've been a brake cable.

I used to have an Amiga which my grandfather passed onto my family when he didn't need it (back when windows were less than pi). It was only upgraded to 1MB of RAM. But it had a second extrnal floppy drive!
Sometimes games would freze up and ejecting the disk and reinserting it would fix it. Some games took up three floppy disks!
StormAngel found an emulator for Android so he sometimes plays the old games of our childhood. I particularly remember Silkworm, Lemmings, Lemmings Tribes, Pang, Pinball Dreams, Lotus 2, Catch Em, Desert Strike, (and found a site with the music for most of those, converted to mp3, and none of those files would fit on a flopoy disk :P) and the image editor Paintbrush (had some nifty features I still miss, even though it didn't suport today's millions of colours). And the music editor.

That machine was how my dream of becoming a hotdog vendor began.

Good luck in your FFS hunt svenman!

Wikification Report
Baobabs! What an ambitious and noble goal! I am so impressed every time you do more wikification, and of course, every time I go to the wiki and find what I'm looking for because of you. I keep intending to make a wiki section on puzzles and mysteries so we can gather clues and solutions in one place, but intending is as far as I get. Someday....
I'm doubly amazed that you can keep track of it all. Randalspeed!

svenman wrote:For good measure, considering that blitzing the thread is part of my goal, I've also started to read the thread from the beginning - but just as one of my many schizoblitzing "fronts". (I'm not particularly happy with the warlike metaphor, especially occurring together with "blitz" and from a German, but I haven't been able to think of a more suitable one.)
Gee, is there a name for the little clumps you end up building off of when you do a big jigsaw puzzle? Islands, maybe? Mainland Islands is also what the NZ Department of Conservation calls areas that can be controlled so fragile species can survive. The protected populations can sometimes spread from there, hopefully growing to be reestablished everywhere.

  • Reported when I encountered Beacon Alpha on NP1003. Oh right, I'm just doing it now.

  • Decided by which term to refer to my endeavour. Wikiblitz? Blitzwikification? Schizoblitzing wikification quest?
My vote is for The Legen-wait for it-dary Multiheaded Wikification Quest of Svenman the Highly Molpish.

mrob - "via elaborate and questionably efficient maneuvers" - bwahaha! Loved your otty! (also giggled at being called TLA)
Molpish wishes for staying ahead of your Botteriada story. I really don't know how you've had the time to write this one at all. It looks like you properly researched it, and I wouldn't think that that would leave much time for anything else.

taixzo wrote:On another topic, I had a dream last night that I was visiting Germany and there happened to be a third OTTer Meetup in Bochum (I'd missed a second one somehow). There was a buffet table and Balthasar_s was trying to illustrate BFTF on rolls that he had stuck to the wall with butter, but the butter didn't stick very well and they kept falling off.
Seems entirely plausible to me.

Okay, that at least gets me to the current page. More ketchup later.

I'm back. I've finished reading page 68 at the end of the third day.

The people are realizing that they are making a new culture. On page 47 someone made up the word "newpix" for 30 minutes. In pages in the 60's, they started a religion with Randall as god, and started using terms like "heresy". Oh and the wiki was created. I liked it when they tried to create an article on "newpix" on Wikipedia, and they were trying to argue against its deletion due to "lack of significance". Now to read page 69...

ING NEWS: OLDEST OTTIFICATION DISCOVERED +++ BREAKING NEWS:

Postby svenman » Sun Jul 05, 2015 8:21 pm UTC

Wikification Report - Special Edition

I'm excited to have discovered what I strongly believe to be the first ottification ever, as early as Newpage 9 of the thread. Of course, at the time there was no concept of ottification yet, nor was there any idea that ottifications would ever be a "thing", but in retrospect what we have here is undeniably an ottification (according to the One True Wiki's glossary: "an adaptation of an Outside song, poem, or other work to fit the One True Comic or One True Thread").

I find it also very steakish that the author of the ottification, mikrit, is an Old One that has remained an (at least occasionally) active otter right until the present, and more than fitting that the ottified original work, the well-known verses from Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament, is itself probably the oldest work of literature ever that has become the original of an ottification.

I hope there are no objections that I have wikified my discovery under the category of "Ottified Stories".

There are other notable preshadowings and first occurrences that I've lately encountered during my wikification blitzquest and made a note of, but didn't mention in my previous wikification report:

And here an updated list of the pages of the One True Thread that I have covered in my Wikischizoblitz so far:

  • 1 – 9
  • 864 – 875
  • 967 – 979
  • 997 – 1009
  • 1329 – 1335
  • 1400 – 1408
  • 1445 – 1468 (the gap is closing...)
  • 1472 – 1478
  • 1599 – 1618
  • 1676 – 1701
  • 1966 – 1969
  • 2125 – 2339

Molpy on!
Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

Addams thanks all of us who helped. Her life is much better now.

Randallspeed to all blitzers on the One True Thread!
