Or is it enough if the only the visible ONGs are?
Two botposts for each frame may be too much.\
Or maybe not.

lmjbot can edit but only her own (or lmjb's) posts.

What to do?

I've added a link to the balthaviewer from my viewer, so at least you can now get to the ENHANCEment from newpixbot's posts in three clicks.

lmjbot ninja'd newpixbot by posting the ENHANCED version of the DoubleStoryONG before the actual ONG. I'm not sure whether this is a problem, but if it is, an easy solution would be to let lmjbot post after newpixbot, e.g. 1 full newpix after ONGTime. This would allow OTTers to ninja both newpixbot and lmjbot.

Someone must have clicked "ong this for me".
newpixbot's post strategy is:
A new frame appeared. Wait 30 minutes and post it if not ninjad.
lmjbot's post strategy is:
A new frame appeared. Post the previous one if not ninjad.

lmjbot gives as much time as possible to ninja unless someone asks her to post earlier.

LISTEN, DON'T MENTION THE OTW!

Postby mrob27 » Thu Sep 17, 2015 8:57 am UTC

Using frames t-1_0001 and t-1_0024, I zoomed and cropped the former so that the northern Africa images align.

Image

Things to notice:
  • Even though the Africas are the same size, the whole Earth in frame 0024 looks smaller. This shows that the Earth animation is being done in 3-D: as we get closer to the surface, the horizon approaches us too, and the amount we can see decreases.
  • The central pixel of the image, marked with little white circles in both images, is west-southwest of Gibraltar in both images — but as we approach the Earth, the central pixel is also approaching Gibraltar.
  • The center of the white glow (reflection of the Sun) is also moving approximately towards Gibraltar. That is to be expected from the fact that we're approaching; no other movement, e.g. rotation of the Earth, is needed.
  • The big cloud formtions aren't moving too much. This zoom took 4 dips to ONG to us, but the time being depicted is passing more quickly (e.g. a few minutes of in-story time per frame); this conclusion is also supported by the previous observation regarding the position of the Sun reflection.

Since we're getting these ONGs once per beanpix/wavepix/luckypix/silentong (or 4 nopix)e:e, there's plenty of time for the bots to wait. I'd like it if these bots would wait at least an hourH… preferably two.

Not anymore.
I just made the ninja check a bit stricter. (Added word boundaries to the regex.) This should make newpixbot ignore the remapped version of the frame.

It tells bothasar_p lmjbot to ONG the frame for you, using balthasar_'s lmjb1964's login name and password. In BFTF, it used to be bothasar_p, but the mome of this newpage suggests that it's lmjbot now. (Hey, up to now this newpage belongs to experts of <computery stuff>, exclusively! ;–)

BTW, @mrob27, your tree-comparing GIF might be mustarded: In the photo of the tree⁷ I only see the upper part (about 3/5); the lower part is just grey. (I think it was OK when I saw it for the first Time, but I'm not sure about that.)

ONGsystem

Postby balthasar_s » Thu Sep 17, 2015 12:48 pm UTC

I made the source of my ONGsystem available.

http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info/aftertime/ wrote:The source can be downloaded here: aftertime.zip.
It's released under the AGPL 3 license.
It may require some explanation which is not provided yet. It uses paths specific to my server. All paths are defined on the beginning of the files.

aftertime.zip contains the sources of the afterTime viewer, Did you notice interface, mschaviewer ketchup bot, t-1 remapping tool and the ONG bots.
It does not include the source of the Silent Chronotransponder, SilentBot, automome and the bOTTeriada newpixbOTTification tool. Even though the ONGsystem depends on some of these. They may be made available in the future.

Also, the "ong this for me" is actually not a hyperlink, only looks like it.

Code: Select all

<form method="post" action="/aftertime/pleaseongthis">
[<input type="submit" class="hl" value="ONG this for me">]
<input type="hidden" name="story" value="t-1">
<input type="hidden" name="e" value="1">
</form>
It's done like this to prevent googlebot and similar bot from accidentally following the link.

That Earth, especially the sun reflection on the ocean seemed very familiar..., as if I've seen before.
And I just found it.
The Earth is most probably generated in Celestia (or something similar):

Postby mrob27 » Fri Sep 18, 2015 1:35 am UTC

I keep mis-spelling @Sustainabilizer as "Sustainabiliser" :oops: … sorry!

Sustainabilizer wrote:In the photo of the tree⁷ I only see the upper part (about 3/5); the lower part is just grey.

That is because the tree shown to us by ggh is not perched upon a fictional berm of starsandsemencoffeecancerbabiesonice. The bottom 2/5 of the image is, as one would expect, completely non-fictional and thus is useless for comparing the branches, which was the point of my GIF.
  I found the original photo: The real tree is al-Barouk, Lebanon; the photo was taken on 2015 Jan 15th by Toni Hajjar and posted to Panoramio in 2007. Here I have resized it to match the t-1 ONG images:

It looks like the meteor is going to hit pretty soon. Maybe it causes an earthquake, as reported here after the Chelyabinsk event in early 2013. Maybe that closes up the strait of Gibraltar and begins a repeat of the Messinian salinity crisis.

I had an idea but it won't work

Postby AluisioASG » Fri Sep 18, 2015 3:45 am UTC

Sorry, classes resumed just yesterday, which means I don't have a lot of free time again.

Also, I saw a mention to “handegg field” in these bands.

I've just done some overhauling in the XSLT files I use to parse the OTT, but I'm not done yet.
In particular, I'm looking forward to identifying smileys as such; how would I know whether to enable_smilies otherwise? ;)

Looks like it. But in this case, what is the straight structure to the leftpast on which the tree1,4,7 is growing? It can't be the Gibraltar dam then. Unless it's after Time, and it's a remnant of the dam.

ETA new OtherComic.

Also ch*rping busy.

At my WFFS, it looks like I'm about to make the transition from contractor to employee. This is a good thing.

Also, MSW has applied for her own FFS. It's a long shot, but she's been submitted to be in a commercial, along with MSWFP, of course.

When I learned English at school, it was British English (which makes sense, for a European). Then when I registered at the xkcd forum I thought: “Well, it's an US forum.” So I registered as “Sustainabilizer” rather than “Sustainabiliser”. But then writing US English felt too unnatural for me (as opposed to reading it which is just fine), so I'm using British English most of the Time.

Conclusion: “Sustainabiliser” is perfectly okay. :)

Awesomeful! :)

So we know that the place of the non-hidden story is virtual.

I guess it's a seaish gazebo (with a garden?) at the Strait of Gibraltar, and the rope is leading to a hammock with a stick person in it.

Preview ETA: Congratulations, SBN, MSW, and MSWFP!

ETA: What's that white line in the HiddenONG?

Just a slight10 move to the right and down, not as raptorish as before. Maybe this is not a crash but a controlled landing?

Ok, the newest hiddenONGs look like it is the Gibraltar dam1, but before it blocked the sea1. Maybe it was built to use the tidal forces to generate electricity, so originally it let water through? And/or it could also serve as a strait street.

Well, it's pretty strait, but it does curve a little.
