Oh, It still shows my time from yesterdip - I had 78:21, interesting. (Wait, did I really spend almost an hour and half on that? Now thinking of that, I was probably AFK some of that time. Does it stop automatically our does it keep counting?)

Maybe it belongs to a head-up display or some other kind of augmented ENHANCEd reality?
Maybe all this is a video game the Beanie is playing?
But it did move:
Spoiler:

Now looking at the last three frames, it seems to me, that it does indeed stay in fixed point in 3D space relative to the city. Maybe it's a holographic or transparent display of a sign at the road - either a billboard or some kind of road sign (name of the city, directions, warning that the bridge is closed or something).

(The conference is already over and they announced that they have found evidence of liquid water on the surface of the Mars. And guess what - the water is salty. Very, very salty. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?)
Time. The final frontier. These are the voyages of Cueball and Megan. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Yeah, it keeps counting. I was rather dismayed to find over 24 hours on one that I left and came back to.

The new hiddenONGs are wowwowwowterful. That does look like a printed version of Beanish, to my non-linguist eyes.

I'd say that looks suspiciously like our bridge.

That's Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Tampa Bay, Florida though. (here's the page with that picture)

Well, I wasn't saying it was the actual Bridge over Troubled Water the Strait of GIbraltarespecially. I was just saying that it might have been the inspiration for the hiddenONGs bridge.

So you're suggesting we should develop a punsaw that will detect if someone is about to pun, and go after them pre-emptively?

Hi, micdi!! Good to see you! There's exciting stuff happening.

It looks like a shear distortion (what turns a rectangle into a paralellogram). I believe it would line up a lot better if you compensate for perspective angle and foreshortening. You might need control of all three degrees of freedom of the camera angle (Google Earth only gives you control of two, I think). Changing the position and yaw of the camera can produce shear distortion, but roll and tilt might also be involved.
Translation: Your overlay comes from two views, one by you and one by the mystery ONG artist. Both of you have your camera pointed at the city/Tarifa, and both of you are looking down on it from an altitude of 20 km or so, hovering above northern Morocco. But your camera is hovering over a point that is too far to the east. Maintain your altitude but fly west about 10km, re-point the camera so Tarifa is once again in the top-center, and the coastlines will line up a little better. I also think the mystery artist used a wider shot; if so then you need to be closer to Tarifa and use a wider-angle lens (no idea how to make Google Earth change the camera's field of view); and you might also have to employ a Dutch angle.

Hm, I guess so. I'll try to get my aerial camera over Gibraltar at a different angle. Not sure about the Dutch angle, but I could maybe come up with a Dutch apple pie.

especiallySince there is no bridge over the Strait of Gibraltar. Yet.

Assuming that the sign is highway related, saying something like "Gibraltar bridge, 0.8 kilocue," I decided to look on the Mediterranean map ONGs for the Beanish label for the Strait of Gibraltar. Turns out it looks something like "933," which doesn't seem to match anything on it.

Good sleuthing.

The sign is transparent, which seems to support the text-on-a-screen theory. I like the virtual-reality-gaming theory, myself.

Hm, Mars-Time-related questions for the pope. Did a piece of Mars fly of and crash into the strait of Gibraltar, causing the Zanclean flood? Or perhaps an Martian spaceship? Or a Marsh'n spaceship? Where is Marsh'n these dips?

Is it just a stylistic choice that there are no people moving around in a city that big or is the area being deserted part of the story? Have they all evacuated to somewhere safe from the impending disaster that blocks the straight? Or is this the apocalypse after the recovery following the first apocalypse and everyone has died off? Or is this the beanie's dream of what happened millennia ago to block the straight and create the original timeline of Time?

So many questions. So few answers. So awesomefully put together.

The buildings sort of remind me of a lighter version of Shamus Young's Procedural City.
for example:

Maybe the resemblance is just due to the minimalistic style, but it could have been an inspiration.

And yes, the colours do seem to point towards ChronosDragon.

For now, the pattern looks too random to be a fractal. To me it looks more like artefacts of photoshopping the background out of a photograph.

Maybe once we stop panning, we'll zoom in. Thus continue the hiddenONGs.

balthasar_s wrote:Thew buildings' textures on both sides of a corner are mirror images of each other.

Wow, I didn't notice that at all. Good catch.

The details of this image definitely seem to correspond to the points in the article you posted, karhell. Maybe once we zoom in, we'll stary seeing people and other details on a smaller scale.

I'm so curious to see the connection between these images and the Beanie in the hammock. The world in the hiddenOngs seems such a far cry from the world that Meg and Cue and the Beanies live in.

And it still seems like magic to me that the one set of images is hidden in the other. The talent in this group never ceases to amaze.

lmjb1964 wrote:And it still seems like magic to me that the one set of images is hidden in the other. The talent in this group never ceases to amaze.

I'll try to explain this magic...

The frames are indexed PNGs

What does "indexed" mean?
In "normal" RGB images each pixel has a color value.
In indexed PNGs, there is a list of colors. It can have between 1 and 256 colors.

The pixels don't have color values but numbers.
If the value is, for example, 3 it means that the pixel should have the color number 3 from the list.
And so on.

The ONGs all have a list of 255 colors.
But the first 85 have the same value of gray, 8a8a8a.
The next 85 have the same value of black.
And the next 85 have the same value of white.

If one pixel has the value of 100 and the other 101
they are both black because on the list of colors both 100 and 101 are black.

But if now we only change the list, suddenly all the pixels will have different colors.

In the "original filename" there are values of 85 colors encoded in base64.
We can replace the 85 identical grays with the decoded colors.
And do the same with the 85 balcks and 85 whites.

And then we will see the enhanced frame.

ETA: If that's still magic just ask lmjbot.

I can't help but notice that there is neither a skycircle nor stars in the ONGs. Maybe the beanie is not capable of dreaming about such complex settings... or something very, very zanclean has happened.

Or, it's sunset on an overcast evening. There is a definite orange glow on the horizon, and the sky is grey, not black.

Of course, that orange glow could also be from being on the balthaskycircle during its recent trip to the basement, or from being on that other planet where the beginnings (or *ndings) of Zanclea have been found.

Oooh, shiny! Things are happening? Someone is making a new graphic story? I just sneaked up from the basement and read the last NewPage. Megan has been sleeping very long, hasn't she? In fact, I don't see that the images change at all. Is there a javascript I should notice?

Actually, I was missing y'all, for reasons that I may reveal later. Very nice to see that you are still ottering away.
And today's my name day, hooray! I nearly forgot, but my wife and daughters gave me what my heart always craves. Chocolate, I mean. And I know from Game of Thrones that it is bad luck to execute someone on one's name day, so I have refrained from that today.

Cheerio. I shall return, some day soon.

Hi, mikrit! Welcome back! Yes, there are exciting things happening.

I have a new theory. The hiddenONGS are the POV of a Beanie terminator who is traveling from the past across the Bridge of Gibraltar to hunt down the Beanie version of Sarah Connor. The test says something like "Target Not Acquired." Xe will find the Sarah Connor Beanie and will succeed in destroying her. Thus end the Beanies.

No, no, you did a fine job! I pretty much understand some of it, but it's just hard for me to visualize it. Maybe if there were pictures. :)

Even so, it's still pretty amazing that someone did it, and that someone (you) found it, so it's still kind of magical.

That is a really long rope on that hammock.

I had some advantage because it's hidden in a very similar way to how I hid some frames in bftf. So I knew what to look for.
But the now obvious idea to check for this didn't come until ggh said something about hidden pixels.

It's a coloring book: color-by-number. If you pick lots of good colors, you get a pretty picture. Those are the hidden ONGs.

But if you pick only two colors, you can pass it off as an ordinary Time(afterTime)Frame. That's what the new mystery author did.

A clever OTTer was able to see the color-by numbers "under" the black (and white) regions, and saw that there were more than two different numbers. "What if we used more colors?"

The real trick to getting two good pictures is to use even more numbers. In this particular case (one image with (say) 80 colors, coexisting with another image with 2 colors, is to use 160 numbers. The first 80 numbers would be the regions where the b&w image was black, and the second 80 numbers would be where the b&w image was white. So, in the b&w image, 80 of the numbers would be black, and the other 80 would be white. But in the color image, there would be two different numbers that mean the same color (one with the secret black overlap, the other with the secret white overlap).

Try it with a real (paper) coloring book (or just a quick drawing). Draw two color-by-number images, one in B&W and the other in (four for simplicity) colors. Then put them one on top of the other and draw the resulting mishmash. Now, there will be regions where in one image it's black and in the other it's red. Call that "color #1". But where it' white in the first image and red in the second, call that "color #2". Etc:

red - black: 1
red - white: 2
blue - black: 3
blue - white: 4
green - black: 5
green - white: 6
yellow - black: 7
yellow - white: 8

Now, if you color the mishmash using the first column, you'll get your color image.
But if you color it using the second column, you'll get the B&W image.

DISREGARD THAT, I FAXT MOLPIES

Postby mrob27 » Wed Sep 30, 2015 1:55 am UTC

I haven't had too many ideas lately. I looked at the new writing, thought of checking the map like @moody7277 and came to about the same conclusion.

Before reading @ucim's response I tried to find an existing colour-by-numbers sheet that has two different pictures depending on how you assign the colours to numbers. It seems no-one has made one yet! :D Good explanation, though.
