The tradeoff is that POV-Ray is much slower to produce images. Gmax has bad lighting and texturing because it was created to produce game models which have much more stringent rendering time requirements. I'm pretty sure that not even on the fastest game computers can POV-Ray render any but the simplest images in realtime, although with dual-core we're getting closer.

Yeah, i guess. I dont suppose you know anything about the gmax texturing stuff? :/ it's really pissing me off, and i cant find anything about it.

twm! Finally someone with an older-looking desktop than me :P !

(I like twm, actually... if it weren't for its lack of multiple desktops and the fact that it's practically more difficult to customize than fvwm (because so many people on the web have customization tips for fvwm) I might well be using it myself. It seems to me to have the sanest defaults of any window manager I've tried.)

(Furthermore, I don't know why it never occurred to me to use convert to convert my xwds... I always used xv for some dumb reason)

(That background pattern reminds me how much my monitor sucks at high res... aliasing artifacts like crazy!)

EDIT: What does the command "open" do? I'm sure it's real obvious... like it opens stuff, right :D ?

EDIT2: I just did an "emerge --search open". That's going to return a lot of unrelated results... d'oh!

EDIT3: The -frame argument to xwd is totally unnecessary for taking screencaps (dumps of the root window) because the root window has no frame... on my system, actually, the -screen argument does nothing, but your fancy Mac might be different. What you really want is -root argument; that way you don't have to click or anything, your screen can be totally covered in terminals and you'll still get a cap.

I was talking to my shrink and he said that my feelings for this thread weren't love, but rather an unhealthy obsession. So I capped him.

Then I capped my screen.

This is an xwd of a drawterm window; I'm drawtermed into my Plan 9 box. In this session I'm playing some sudoku, editing the source code of the web browser abaco, browsing this thread with abaco, reading a paper by Rob Pike and P.J. Weinberger, and, in the interest of having at least a little bit of eye-candy on the screen, checking out beinsane's OS X screencap

EDIT: I'm also manning emacs, because it's funny. Manning vi is also funny in Plan 9, but for a different reason: vi is not an editor (neither is it a viitor).

does anyone have a good picture just looking straight down at the clean top of a desk? (i.e. not a shot where they've got papers scattered everywhere and an old soda bottle and some gum wrappers, but one with a neat desk, maybe a computer and a printer on it?)

No, but a friend of a friend apparently had a desktop where he moved the computer back and took a picture of the wall and wires and everything behind the monitor and set that as his desktop picture. I never saw it, but it sounded awesome.

For the sake of everyone else whose computer has a heart attack upon opening this thread (like my poor laptop which only has 256MB of RAM), I'll give you a thumbnail of my desktop:

I hide my desktop icons and put in a desktop folder in my taskbar instead, which I have set to auto-hide, so when the desktop is visible, that's basically what it looks like.
