I'm so used to our naming conventions that I initially though the comic title was referring to the girl's name. A stupid assumption, as that's clearly Ponytail.

It's also a good thing that otherthreads are immune to the punsaw.

Oops.

An interesting note about the relation of Othercomics to each other, which is different from OTC RELATEDness and so a bit off-topic:
Spoiler:
The interactive "Garden" othercomic, which came out over a mip ago as #1663, lists each of its objects with a particular name. One of the objects that can grow in a garden is a hopmolpy called important-bun, which a couple of OTTers mentioned in the otherthread (and why I bring it up here, because it seems like trivia OTTers would be interested in). We didn't have a reason why the hopmolpy should be called important-bun until now with the release of #1682. Perhaps GLR was working on these comics at about the same Time (supposedly he was working on #1663 right up until it came out), and therefore has an Othercomic buffer of at least a mip stocked up before release. That's pure speculation, of course, but treeish to think about.

Ha! :D
I was thinking the same when I saw the comic title in the otherthreads list. Is this a comic about one of the Forty...?

HES wrote:If you were an unknown character in Time, what would your hair-derived name be?

Well, my hair looks pretty much like it does in my avatar (I'm brunette but of course Time is grayscale). It's not distinctly short or long (particularly not compared to Rosetta or Minim). Darkhair, perhaps. Or maybe Side-Part since I part my hair on the side, not to be confused with the Cueganite who is already named Part.

I initially identified the Forty using this set of five newpix: 3066-3070. On first count I only got 38 Cueganites. Then jeffallen55 pointed out that I had forgotten to list Baldo, so the count rose to 39 Cueganites pictured in this scene on the two connected rafts.

Yin-Yang, the 40th Cueganite to be identified, does not appear in this particular set of five newpix. I didn't find her (or him, it's never clarified) until three dips later, when working on newpix 3024-3036 which concern the scene where LaPetite returns. (Here's the detailed post charting the Cueganites in that scene.)

Yin-Yang is the first small child standing up on the left side of the Cueganites in this newpix:

Image

I still haven't tracked the individual movements of members of the Forty with precision throughout the OTC, so I'm not sure yet if Yin-Yang appears in a later newpix after all of the Cueganites have boarded the raft or not. That's why thunk asked about a wip ago:

I did a quick skim of the newpix in which we have clear views of the Cueganites and as far as I can tell, Yin-Yang never appears again after the departure-from-camp scene. Poor Yin-Yang. Potential fates:

1. (At risk of heresy) GLR forgot that she was one of the characters, totally understandable when having to draw dozens of people per newpix.
2. Yin-Yang became a victim of the sea's sudden seaishness, like the first molpy at the neattree, which probably drowned.
3. Yin-Yang was there all along but hiding behind one of the 2.5D obstructions on the raftcastle. She made the voyage safely.

1190: Time: TAKE THIS JAVASCRIPT AND CH**RP IT

Postby mrob27 » Fri May 20, 2016 4:37 am UTC

Recently I discovered that I was treating Spoiler: blocks as "quotes" for purposes of word statistics. I just fixed it; as a result, the number of "newwords" in the mr*bdex has increased from 3874 to 4134. I can't provide any details like which words got added, but I suspect Acts of the Clerics benefitted somewhat.
  Word counts were also affected:

Code: Select all

 Before:
weighted by powers of 1: 10313327 words, 45867275 chars; 4.447 avg wordlen
weighted by powers of 2: 6779650 words, 30001591 chars; 4.425 avg wordlen
weighted by powers of 4: 5647340 words, 24884169 chars; 4.406 avg wordlen
weighted by powers of 8: 5181276 words, 22769276 chars; 4.395 avg wordlen

 After:
weighted by powers of 1: 10313327 words, 45867275 chars; 4.447 avg wordlen
weighted by powers of 2: 7381347 words, 32839582 chars; 4.449 avg wordlen
weighted by powers of 4: 6347008 words, 28247594 chars; 4.451 avg wordlen
weighted by powers of 8: 5897275 words, 26251388 chars; 4.451 avg wordlen

The full word count is unaffected, but the "weighted" ones (in which quoted words count less) have increased.

NoMouse wrote:I just noticed that the text field automatically stretches out when the post is too long to fit in it

I don't think anyone posted an answer to this yet. (Did you?) I've figured out a bit of it. The box you enter text into is a <textarea> element:

Code: Select all

 <textarea name="message" id="message" rows="15" cols="76"
tabindex="4" onselect="storeCaret(this);" onclick="storeCaret(this);"
onkeyup="storeCaret(this);" onfocus="initInsertions();"
class="inputbox"></textarea>

Normally the way one would achieve this type of behaviour is to do something like "molpy.style.height = molpy.scrollHeight+'px';" in Javascript. There is Javascript of course. fora.xkcd.com/assets/javascript/editor.js contains definitions of functions storeCaret and initInsertions, but I don't see them setting the height of any element.
Regarding the manual resize thingy in the corner, fora.xkcd.com/styles/prosilver-foobar/tmeme/forms.css defines "resize: vertical" which gives it that manual resize box. My browser allows disabling JavaScript for individual websites, and I did that before starting to compose, edit, and preview this post. The text box now does not resize itself, but the manual resizer works. I'll edit to add a note about whether this post was successful. Of course, the Javascript does perform useful functions, like opening spoilers, uploading attachments, and any userscripts, and in this post editing process I can't use any of the buttons that insert BBcode text (which is most of what that editor.js is doing).

Oh hey, another thing I just noticed: forums.xkcd.com keeps track of which posts I've seen, so I can look at the forum index or topics list and see which threads have new posts since the last time I visited that particular thread. fora.xkcd.com also keeps track of that, but it does so separately. So if I read the whole thread on forums.xkcd.com, it still appears unread on fora.xkcd.com. There are other domains too, including echøchamber.me and one other I think. That might be useful to people who actually use that feature.

I'd glad everyone liked my hypnotic images. Nerd-sniping wasn't exactly the intent, but I suppose it's been nerd-sniping me since 1994.

mrob27 Image

Edit: Indeed, posting was successful with Javascript disabled. So it's just a matter of working out how to disable the specific bit of Javascript responsible for the auto-resizing.

forums.xkcd.com, fora.xkcd.com and echo chamber .me are the three I'm aware of.

Edit: Interestingly, there seems to be a text replacement filter on the echochamber site. I suspect one of the times mrob27 said "forums.xkcd.com" it may have been that, with the text filter "helping".

Really? I use different domains on different devices (as an attempt to avoid the logout bug) and my unread posts are consistent across them all. Relatedly, my fora bookmark goes straight to unreadposts these days.

Postby mrob27 » Fri May 20, 2016 10:50 am UTC

@HES is right. My observation of the phenomenon, or @HES's observation of my statement changed what it's doing, and now it doesn't work for me either. Perhaps it was a side-effect of my disabling Javascript for a while, or not being logged in on both domains. I also sometimes delete the "sid=2fd14136…6a8c0" from URLs because I don't trust it. Anyway, totally useless, sorry about that.

In an attempt to be useful, I found the 4th domain, forums3.xkcd.com.

A big ol' list of xkcd domain names was posted by our own @azule, OTT:2139:14. At the moment (for me at least) echοchamber.me is the only one being wordfiltered into something else. Here is a thread in the Help Desk area where that wordfilter is not being applied.

I apologize in advance because this post is like 95% not OTC-RELATED. I got sucked into the intertubes looking for xkcd stuff and just started noting all the pages I browsed through. So here's an UNG to keep this somewhat OTCish, and the rest is fairly irrelevant.

xkcd stuff:

Neat, the echochamber link is another for the filter list. We're up to 15 known yip-round sieves and there are supposed to be more out there.

Another alternate domain for the fora is http://forums3.xkcd.com/
In my search, the oldest topic on differing domain names I could find is from 2007H:

I would recommend just using forums.xkcd, as fora.xkcd was not intended to be a replacement or alternate site, simply a musing.

This is the point in my post where I fell down the hopmolpy hole entirely and spent multiple newpix looking at miscellaneous xkcd pages and such.
The most RELATED piece comes from the page http://xkcd.com/election/ which has a possibly heretical saying at the top...

Perhaps: it's
Time: to
Go: outside

The rest of the pages I looked through are basically unRELATED but are in the spoilers for the curious.
Spoiler:
Various Pages

And then I did a thing where I tried to find as many Othercomics as possible from outside xkcd.
I know I didn't get them all (some links were just too old and broken, reminiscent of the current Othercomic), but I did find a bunch.
Spoiler:
Scattered Othercomics

It's a sad, sad state of affairs. Though I would argue for outsanity being a cromulent newword: craziness brought on from being Outside the OTT too long. That said, I do accept any scrumptious donutting I may deserve.

Rabat na rowery! 50% off while supplies last...

1530/2485 pages read (61.57%)
24.8 dips taken

Spoiler:
Randammit, everyone keeps interrupting me during the blitz. Admittedly, those interruptions are either necessary or pretty molpish.

But there's still enough time to signpost.

The dominant theme of the last 40 pages was Sandcastle Builder. Admittedly, that is a fun game. But I keep getting roped back into playing it--and waiting for Swedish Furniture tends to interrupt one's reading. I just got Fractal Sandcastles...but everymolpy's so far ahead!

ED developed it pretty fast back then--even after getting his head injured at least once.

Mrob's chronograms come fast and furious during this period. They're pretty detailed and molpish! Impressive blitz he had going there, which inspired my own. Of course, I will have to fashion a thwapstick at some point. A long one, for more thwapping speed.

There's song OTTididitys going on, as well as the occasional poem/comic production, so how about a double-iamb?
(well not quite)

Begin with sand,
add water next,
so Cuegan build
neat castles.

Now, reach the sky,
molberrify
their life, meet Beans
--Rose vassals.

There was also Balthasar's seminal film, which was pretty baobabish in its own right. It was also one of the few OTT-related productions I watched/experienced during my long break from Time. Obelisk also sounds cool--even though I didn't have any spare nopix left to experience that.

ChronosDragon, among others, suggest less-heretical mip names for the calendar. Naming them for the seasons is a good idea--in fact so good, both the Slavs and French Revolutionaries managed to do it. Today, just as it is the first dip of Awe, it is also the first dip of Prairial-- and a Belarusian's calendar might display "Травень"...that is to say, Grassmip.

Finally, I appreciated the sustenance BlitzGirl left for Rakhal and the others who follow in her path. The blueberry smoothie was delicious---it's unhealthy to eat a lot of food late in the nip.

To all: If I didn't mention you above, don't think I forgot! There's so much seaish stuff to read, I can't discuss it all. Some of the choice stuff gets left on the cutting room floor.

ET fix grammar mustard.

1190: Time: COULD BLITZGIRL__S *BE* ANY MORE ZANCLEAN?

Postby mrob27 » Sat May 21, 2016 1:58 am UTC

BlitzGirl wrote:Oh, and this must have been noted at some point, but http://xkcd.com/time redirects to the OTC at http://xkcd.com/1190/

Oh, thanks for the reminder! xkcd.com/time was pointed out by @Jafloi, OTT:305:9, and a few more times e.g. @Neil_Boekend, OTT:916:39. After the early days, @StormAngel, OTT:1561:17 reminded us, but then not again until just now.

I plead temporary outsanity, your honor!

That all makes sense, since "outsanity" is the typical mental state of Outsiders, i.e. it is what outsiders call sanity. OTTsanity is what OTTers call sanity, and what outsiders call insanity.

Contemplate what we'd do if Randall Munroe came around some
day and said we could get any question about Time answered,
but only one, and no wishing for more wishes. Discuss!

But can we ask for more Randalls? An OTTer Randall to molp around and answer our questions, a Blitzer Randall to find all the awesomeful things we've missed or forgotten about, a Basement Randall to draw us OTTifications...
And the Original can go back to drawing XKCD - everybody's happy (except maybe Basement Randall)

We just passed a sequence of three newpix (1485-7) that were identical but delivered on three consecutive ONGs, with different hashes.
They all look like this and include a tiny speck of white mustard just down and to the right of the riverish tree:

So I do this thing where I click the subject of a post to mark where in the page I'm up to, if interrupted while reading. And I was interrupted when I was nearly done with this page. So I tried clicking, by muscle memory, and couldn't figure out where to click. So I gave up, wondering what was wrong, and read a little further down and...
Well Jose, that didn't take long to cause mischief.
