1190: "Time for Cuegan to get some sun protection"

Postby thunk » Tue Jul 19, 2016 6:55 am UTC

The UV must be strong up in the mountains!

My time machine is another hour behind taixzo's, but I fear that even here, the deadline has passed. When considering (present or former) OTTers by time zone, there's a big gap between JFOM at UTC+3 and Ace at UTC+9:30. And a few smaller ones.

Opiboble is furthest back at UTC-9; ggh and bachaddict share UTC+12.

And a tyme machine in Cheeselen is a means for withdrawing currency.

Pope decree: I would mention the irc bot Bucket, who is known for containing various items, offering funny quips out of xir database, and inedible meals.

(RELATEDly, there is some nice worldbuilding on this site, mixed with a bunch of furry stuff. But we're OTTers--we're even weirder, right?)

One of my favourite bots is RoboRosewater. https://mobile.twitter.com/roborosewater It's like Hallucinations of a Time Accessor (actually, it is the progenitor), but magical.

Thanks!

Still not big, but 1062x758 is probably as big as I want to go with the image I used.

Man, I hate colour management. The pic I made looks golden to me in Chrome, but it becomes this coldish pink when I view it through Preview on this leopard (not to be confused with the forum's preview). Anyways, I hope you're seeing something with light golden light.

Mozilla Firefox allows to put custom CSS in the file
~/.mozilla/firefox/<unique stuff>.default/chrome/userContent.css.

I used this

Code: Select all

@-moz-document domain(forums.xkcd.com)
{
  div
  {
    display: block ! important;
  }
}
to open all spoilers for me.

After the migration I had to change it to:

Code: Select all

@-moz-document domain(forums.xkcd.com)
{
  div.quotecontent > div
  {
    display: block ! important;
  }
}
And now it works again. :)

Treeish! But, my only option on my MFFSTA is IE, and this code doesn't work. Or maybe somehow custom CSS is also disabled, even though it allows me to select a custom CSS file. Is there something I can change to make it work?

Me too. But... it is better than having no option at all. And I consider myself lucky that forums.xkcd.com isn't blocked by their sieves, it seems that there are very few molpish things I can access.

Oh no, T** **d of t-1 :(

I hope the poor Beanies are ok...

Also, for some reason, I stopped being able to see new images hosted on 1190.botm.info after t-1_782, would it be possible for someone to make a .gif of that whole ENHANCEd scene and any others after it, and upload as an attachment? It would be treeish to see that last bit in animated form.

Me too. Actually, I usually just have to type "for" and it knows where I want to go and fills in the rest. :)

I don't want to add bookmarks on my MFFSTA that aren't related to my MFFS, but all I have to do to get into the forum is type "ctrl"+"T", "F", and "Enter", and it takes me to forums.xkcd.com. From there it's 3 mouse clicks and typing the NP# that I'm currently on, and then I start Blitzing for the dip.

I hope you are doing well with your treatments, ED! It sounds like you caught it early, and you're still young which also helps a lot. I wish you a speedy and molpish recovery!

RELATED life-mustard (spoilered for **dishness):
Spoiler:
Part of the life-mustard that kept me in the basement for about 20 mips was my mom's cancer. She had it first about 15 yips ago and made a full recovery, but then about 30 mips ago they found it again. She fought that one off, and thought she was in the clear, but it had snuck around the treatment and entered her liver. She fought it off for a long time, but **ded her treatments this past JanuaryH since it was doing nothing but making her miserable, after which she still hung on for another 4 mips.

It was a Topsy-Turvy Time.
I wonder how many of us have expressed our gratitude?
I like the new format, too.

My favorite improvement may or may not have been a part of The Migration.
My favorite part is Not loosing posts, if I loose the internet connection.

The internet connection, for me, is intermediate.
In the Bad Old Days, if the connection was weak, my posts disappeared into The Ether.

Now; In The Future, some thing, some where, remembers my posts, sometimes.
And; The Future gives the post back to me, to post, again.

This feature, sometimes, results in a double post from me. (shrug)
It is nice that Time does not ban Posters for double post gaffs.

Oh, Dear;
I hope you are doing well with your treatments, ED! It sounds like you caught it early, and you're still young which also helps a lot. I wish you a speedy and molpish recovery!

I'm so sorry.
I don't know what to say.

Yet; I want to say, something.
This is a Private/Public conversation.

Spoiler:
I am not receiving any treatment.
But; I keep not dying, anyway.

If you recently went through the Dying Process with your Mother.
Then, you must know what I am dealing with.

I hope she was comfortable and comforted by her friends and family.
There is not One Thing we can to to stop death. It is inevitable.

But; There is a great deal of suffering both physical and psychological we Can put an end to.
Back On/Off Topic:
Time is a Light Hearted Thread,

I heard a FairyTale.
I think it was about Religion.

The Story says:

When we pass from this World, leaving our physical bodies behind,
We go to Stations. (Like TSA Security, only run by Gods or Angels.)

At one of the stations we find an Angel.
The Angel holds a measuring scale.

We hand our heart to the Angel.
The Angel weighs our heart.

If our heart is heavier than a feather,
We must return, to learn to be Light.
Why Can Angels Fly?

Spoiler:
Because; They take themselves lightly.
Life is, just, an exchange of electrons; It is up to us to give it meaning.

We are all in The Gutter.

Some of us see The Stars.

That's cute! Strangely, I don't think I've ever seen that before. I've heard the quote heaps, and have even passed it along, but the original? That may have been the first time.

ggh wrote:Maybe someone with Wikipedia-editing experience could add Time to the "In fictional works" section of the Château d'If page....

[Citation needed]

To make something like that stick, we first need to get the Château d'If on the Time (xkcd) page. To support the notion that the castle in the OTC is at least somehow related to the Château d'If (an implication of actual identity seems even more doubtful, some eleven thousand years into the future), a citation where the link to the Château has been made would help. Ideally in one of the blog posts by the OTA himself, but anything from an independent source would help, even the first note of the similarity here in the OTT itself. The best I have found so far is this.
Apart from Forum Games, mostly active on the One True Thread.
If you need help understanding what's going on there, the xkcd Time Wiki may be useful.

Addams thanks all of us who helped. Her life is much better now.

Here's the first mention by our map-master edfel. Or if you cite the whole page, you get the newpic with the predicted shoreline too, which allows for the beautiful lineup. But... what about using this as the citation? It's the most thorough answer and would get us a new blitzer if anyone wanted to check up on it. Also, there are dodgier citations in that article already.

Or... what if we skip the whole Time page and simply add to the Chateau page that in the distant future, the scholar tribe of 1190: Time is rebuilding the ruins of a fortress visually similar to the Chateau d'If at a location described to be where the Chateau d'If now stands. That would get us off the hook for having to prove actual identity, no? None of the other entries in the Chateau d'If "In fictional works" section carries a citation, so maybe self-evident is good enough for cultural references....

But really, it's no big deal. If you think this is too dodgy to go in Wikipedia, that's good enough for me.

CH*RP! IT'S LIFE-MUSTARD… AGAIN.

Postby mrob27 » Thu Jul 21, 2016 2:26 pm UTC

I haven't posted for quite a while… somewhere on NP2501. There was a little Outside stuff going on, but then I got concerned for my mother, and learned that she had passed away.
  There are proper places on the xkcd fora for grieving, and discussing death in general, most notably the Dear SB area within Serious Business. It's a bit awkward for me to discuss such things online, rather I've been using phone conversations with friends, including Mom's friends.
  But it's also hard not to mention it here. I don't have much to say at the moment about Time, or about all the things we've been doing that are inspired by it. My bOTTeriada story is trickling ever-more-slowly as the next chapter (The Dragons of OTTifiability) continues to be stalled by my other activities. I guess that will go on for a while.

My deepest condolances to you Rob - everyone has a voldeframe, and I hope your mom enjoyed her life to the fullest in the Time allotted to her. Katie and I are (ironically enough) just leaving for the cemetery to mull over our own final resting places, or I'd say more, but that will have to come in the future.
