Obviously we all read the comics with different speeds/timings, but I found that flowed hilariously well. The punchline was great.

Yeah, I thought it was delivered quite well.
I hear Merlin's favourite song was All Along the Watchtower.

Someone once told me that although they loved Memento when they saw it the first time they watched it the "Merlin" way around and then decided it was a rubbish film because the story didn't go anywhere and it was only a noteworthy film because playing it backwards added a novelty value. They were offended when I told them they were an idiot.

This strip was so great!
Having read the once and future king as well as memento this strip totally made my day
it only affirms that in this messed up world, our fabulous creator here represents at least once person I can relate to

if merlin went backwards in time, then over the years wouldn't merlin's friends forget him one by one, rather than merlin forgetting his friends, as it says in panel 3?

From Merlin's perspective his friends would forget him. From their perspective, he would forget them. If we are talking about going forwards in time, past the point of Merlin's last exposure to a friend, he would no longer remember them at that point.
Though him forgetting his friends in this manner probably wasn't the reason he was lonely. It was probably more them forgetting him.
I read the The Once and Future King because of this comic.

Or, of course, an antichrist.
