Is that like saying "My water broke"? I'm glad that broken weather is working out for you, but I'm not sure we shouldn't have a repairman on call. If clouds are bursting, maybe it's even a design defect. Of course, maybe weather isn't broken, but just needs an upgrade. We can download weather 2.0 (for Windows), weather 2.11 (for Linux), or weather 1.9 bugfix (for Mac) (yeah, Mac always gets it later). I hear it brings rainbows and ponies. (Rainbows are pretty, but I'm not sure ponies falling from the sky is an improvement.)

Glad you are enjoying your new friend Suck, and hope you have a long and fruitful relationship. Back in the old days, when men were men and giants ruled the earth, the weather sometimes brought its own suck. Alas, it sucked more than just octopods; rumors of entire houses going up the shaft led to movies about Aunty Em and Toto. Maybe it's better to have a personal Suck rather than the Great Universal suck that sometimes comes around.

Oh, don't do that! (Unless you are afraid of ponies falling from the sky!) We like you around! Thank you addams for being you!

ETA: Seems I'm Pope of NP 2524. Decree - thank somebody for something, especially off the thread.

ETAA: Coming back from a trip to California, the sun was setting behind us, and I saw this view of the clouds out to the horizon. Note the wedge-shaped dark area - that is the shadow of the earth. Above that area, you can see sunlight scattering off the moisture, dust and crud in the air. But within that area, the sun had already set and the air-crud is not illuminated. Not shown, (I have another pic, but it's not as striking), the sun is illuminating the clouds behind more deeply than the clouds in front, which are only lit on top; evidence that the earth (or at least the cloud layer) is curving down away from the sun.

Tomorrow is my last official day at my old job, so I'm frantically trying to finish up things. This wipend I'll be traveling to the Renaissance, where the internet is not so good. But next week, I'm hoping.

Miss y'all!

Molpy out.
Oh hey, we're going to a Renaissance too! Though something tells me it may not be the same Renaissance

No, but GHW and his FP will be at the same one as June Bug, I think.

Odd question of the day, anyone here near Disneyland, and able to spend a day there in the next couple weeks?
Our Renaissance was cancelled due to "severe weather" in the northeast, but we ended up hanging out at the house and watching a few exciting handegg matches instead. And sadly, we are in the exact opposite corner of the contiguous 48 to hang out at Disneyland, though it sounds like tons of fun!

ucim wrote:Yay Febrion! Been wondering where you've been to. Seems lately lots of people have taken to long pints. :) I suppose I've been guilty too. I've actually made some beer, but they've been short pints. I don't have pint bottles.
My wife just put her next beer in the fermenter a few xips ago, it'll be a mip or two before we bottle it though. She usually makes "short pints", but also makes a few "bombers" (22 oz, I think), so I guess those would be "long pints".
There's a beer I drink, Tui, that sells a dozen 745ml bottles in swappa crates. The bottle caps have little trivia questions and answers in them, often about cricket, but one I remember was about how many millilitres there are in a pint. It bothered me because the answer was obviously too high, and that's when I learned that there are different pints. The strange thing though, is the answer I remember them giving was 745ml, the same as the bottle, and I thought that I had found online that that wasn't wrong. Now, however, I'm not seeing any evidence of a pint that large. So am I misremembering their answer, or did I just fail to realize that they were making a funny about their beer size?
My money is on it being a funny about the beer size, since neither the US pint nor the Imperial pint is anywhere near 745ml.

Quoted so that hopefully I remember to follow the links later tonip:

I've been sleeping and waiting and listening to the sound of the pouring rain.
Here is a very old catchy song from the rainy side of the Cascade Mountains.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC2Fu20X_KY

Many things I was waiting for are here in my real world.
My new best friend, Suck, has arrived to stay with me forever!

Suck's Story:

You and you and you helped Laura Mae help me.
She helped me by sending Suck to live with me.

Suck is a Vacuum. Suck is Soo Great!
I live in a small clearing in a large forest.
This forest has large Spiders that make large webs in clearings.

Before Suck, I wiped the webs away each day.
The Spiders watched and waited, then rebuilt.

Now with Suck by my side, I remove both web and makers of webs.
Don't worry. The Spider group is not endangered and Suck works fast.

They never know what sucked them.
They 'pop' into another dimension.

I used to worry about killing Spiders and Flies.
Ellen told me not to worry. They don't die.

Ellen said, "He is dead in my kitchen.
He is not dead to him. He is still flying.

A shadow passed over him.
He is still flying or waiting or ..."

I don't know that Ellen was right.
I think of her each Time I impose my will on another creature.

Why? Because I read Tomas Paine.
He wrote, (paraphrased)
"The whole of my religious duty is to Love Mercy, Do Justice and Endeavor to make my fellow creatures Happy."

I love Suck!
He makes me Happy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-diB65scQU
How could I not worry? I had loads of Big Spiders.

I actually had someone take my bed, one day.
(in the lyrics) It was so strange, I laughed.

AHH!! The largest and most common spider Suck and I tackle is NOT a native!!
Like the aggressive BlackBerry this Spider came here from Europe!! (Dang It!)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araneus_diadematus
http://www.wou.edu/~baumgare/European_Garden_Spider
Though intimidating to look at, the European garden spider has a mild bite that is harmless to humans.

Suck and I also face Black Widow, Funnel Web, Johnson Jumper and some unidentified arachnids.
The Johnson Jumpers rarely come indoors. I'm glad, because I like them. They are cute and friendly.

Photo of Johnson Jumper

Oh. Oh. The weather 'Broke'.
It has been a long dry summer.

We in the West of the US, had a quiet fire year, for us.
well...Considering how dry it has been.

The weather 'Broke' with a little more than two days of rain.
We had 'Cloud Bursts', Lightening and Thunder. Impressive!

I went into Town.
As I drove past a transformer, it blew.
Sparks rained down onto the pavement like fireworks.

In the past, thunderstorms were rare on the north pacific coast.
We rarely had enough difference in temperature and humidity to form proper storms.

I loved our weather.
'cause, It was boring.

It was cool like Spring until it changed to be cool like Fall.
Two weeks of Cold to keep us grateful. No Summer; Ever!
...Repeat.

Trigger Warning:
Spoilered for Extreme Weather.

U-Tube has something to say about everything.
Weather has changed, because climate has changed.

I was wondering about how the weather was 'Breaking' for others.

Fall in the North.
Spring in the South.

This clip shows two weeks of 'Bad Weather'.
September 16 to September 30.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8wE_mxFUHY

There was a lot of Good Weather during that two weeks.
It was nice, nice, nice here during that Time.

Thank you, Time for being you.
I'll go back under my rock, now.

Postby balthasar_s » Mon Oct 03, 2016 6:05 pm UTC

When I'm in the moonbase I have to use the internal IP address of the bicyclesonthemoon.info server. When I'm outside I have to use the external one.
I have a simple script which I use to change between the two (it replaces the /etc/hosts file):

Code: Select all

#! /bin/bash

if [ -z $1 ]; then
   echo `cat /etc/moonbase`
   else

   if [ $1 == "in" ]; then
      echo `cp /etc/hosts-in /etc/hosts`
      echo "in" > /etc/moonbase
   else
      if [ $1 == "out" ]; then
      echo `cp /etc/hosts-out /etc/hosts`
      echo "out" > /etc/moonbase
      else
         echo "???"
      fi
   fi
fi
Example usage:

Code: Select all

2.b:~> moonbase
in
2.b:~> sudo moonbase out
[sudo] password for b:

2.b:~> moonbase
out
2.b:~>

Got some more Torgos shenannigans to write about soon. There hasn't been a lot happening; a few minor things that of themselves wouldn't make very big journal updates, except for the most recent, where Torgos nearly dies (AGAIN).

Today the OTT escaped into my dream.

This morning, my alarm went off. I woke up somewhat, still half-dreaming. I came to the conclusion that my object generator was set to generate alarm clocks, and that therefore there would be twenty or thirty of them going off in the next few minutes. So I turned that one off and went back to sleep.

I then woke an hour later, running late and reminding myself that I did not, in fact, possess an alarm clock generator.

Nope. While it is expected to get quite breezy here, all indications are that we are safe from storm surge in both of our current locations. We're sheltering in places.

This is what we are encouraged to do, so those in riskier circumstances do not have quite as much traffic to worry about.

It is likely we'll lose power in one or both places.

Briefly Basemented, but thinking of and hoping for SBN and anyone else who may find themselves in Matthew's line of sight.

The worst is supposed to be past me now. The rain will continue for awhile though. New WDOP lost power, rental did not, other than a couple blinks.

So far, it seems the trees in both places know what they are doing. Other People's Trees have not all fared as well.

There seems to be some possibility that Matthew will come back for a second try, possibly teaming up with Nicole.

You Are OK!! Happy Dance!
Do you have debris in the pool?

Yes. I also read, Matthew may come back.
He will be reduced to squalls by that time.

All good here (for me, not everyone is as fortunate.) Lots of leaves in the pool, and couple small branches. Quite a few bigger branches down or broken in both places, but none bigger than I can carry. Our fence had some damage, which unfortunately MSW discovered first, and took a tour of the drainage ditches (thankfully empty at that point.) I caught up with her when she went into a neighbor's yard through some similar damage. Interesting way to meet the neighbors. The wolpies are microchipped, and have my cell number on their tag, but still, scary few minutes.

Word now is Matthew is done causing damage, he did keep making a mess as he went up the coast, but finally seems to be done.

Which is really good news, another storm right now, even a small one, would cause a lot of damage, because the seawalls have been breached.

That said, while it was a bad storm, for my town, and for other US towns, the folks in Haiti, have it so much worse, and need so much more help. If you are inclined to help them, be sure to send your money to an organization that will use the money wisely. I know personally the people in one such, if you'd like to know more let me know.

And with that, I stumble out of the past and into the present! I have read it all, and my mind is full of Time

It's been a long and fun journey. It all started with othercomic 1608 'Hoverboard'
I was spending far too much time at the MFFS playing this and I couldn't find that last coin, so I turned to google and started hunting. After a while I found the XKCD forums and the thread for 1608.

I found my coin and blitzed the (riverish) 1608 thread. And then I was done, and had a few minutes to kill while a compilation finished, so I had a look at the ICT threads list. Hmm, what's that seaish thread there titled 1190: Time..... <click>

And the rest, as they say, is xistory

I have experienced all of Time now and a wonderful experience it was. I hope I can contribute in some small way in the future, although I do not have the amazing talents most here seem to have.

Thanks for the welcome!. I bear the title with pride! I shall have to get used to being in the present, I'm used to being a spectator, but unable to take part :)

Spotted that I was in an episode of AotC! I feel honored!

Been having fun reading the tales of Torgos recently. Reminds me of my own time playing in a D&D group and writing up the campaigns for our club magazine 'Illusionary Scripts.'

Next thing to master is BBCode I guess. I've only posted in text so far
(Rakhal is a simple C/C++ coder and doesn't have much experience of webby stuff)

azule wrote:I was reading an article about redheads (who usually should be called "orangeheads"), and I figured out some thoughts related to Time (OTC). I made the following wiki page: Colors.

Basically we can know that Megan and Cueball's people have words for black, white, red, green, blue, and brown. Black and white are givens as all cultures start with those. The rest are mentioned in the OTC, except for blue, but it should be likely that blue is there too!

This also tracks, maybe, how advanced their culture is. We always say they're less advanced than the Beanies. Probably still true. If they don't have a word for orange... ;)
Great idea making that page - cheers! I'll echo what thunk said though: don't be too sure about blue - lotsa cultures group blue with green, or sometimes with black, although you are clearly helping with that:
In Through the Language Glass, Guy Deutscher wrote:Bastian also argued that Tagalog speakers in the Philippines had not even distinguished green and blue until the arrival of the Spanish colonizers, because the Tagalog words for "green" and "blue" were clearly recent borrowings from Spanish verde and azul.
Another relevant direct quote from that book:
People in simple cultures might spend a lifetime without seeing objects which are truly blue.

Yeah, I learned more about how like the Chinese don't distinguish between blue and green, and how the Russians distinguish between light blue and dark blue. Also, people think cyan is blue....it's not. LOL. I had never even heard of cyan until I learned about printers using CMYK. So, yes, that part is complicated, not even to consider colorblind and partially colorblind societies. I'm not going to say that I'm colorblind but I do have problems distinguishing blue and green (the ones close to the others), but that's often linguistical, in my mind. Thinking about it for a moment I can better determine which color category it falls in.

I've just been playing a little Fallout:New Vegas and I've just been told by Dr Mobius that science involves getting mustard in your custard (or maybe custard in your mustard).

It's all related!

(Wonder if there was maybe a nuclear war in the past of Time and that's why the world has regressed...)
