Ohhhh! That makes a lot of sense!

And then bsta was started when Wait was clicked on the ng frame.
So the only button that needed to be pressed was the one that triggered ng - unless that was pause, in which case, two buttons maybe needed to be pressed.

ETA: decree - continue with GnomeAnne's decree of the last NP, which was a bit raptorish to allow for much nostalgia, and check out bsta! We get to Wait for it! :)

Have you ever seen the movie Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole? Probably not. It's an animated film about owls - perhaps a bit more geared to the Little Wonder than to you. Anyways, in that movie, the naughty Third-Reichish owls sometimes "moon-blink" young owls they've captured. Moon-blinking involves encouraging the tired little owls to fall asleep looking up into the full moon. In the morning, the owls are like docile little zombies - as though there was a group rate on lobotomies.

Maybe that's what happened to me. I love falling asleep looking up into the moon. I'll line myself up so that my head is in that little puddle of moonlight coming through the window. If I don't fall asleep right away, I'll scootch over to keep in it as the moon moves, like a horizontal sunflower - sometimes traveling beyond where it's comfortable to sleep.

Um, I feel like there should be one more sentence to this post - the message or something to make this meaningful or at least less random, but I'm afraid I don't have one. I just thought you'd relate. :)
What fun you are!
Thank you for telling us a Story.

You are correct, if you did not tell us;
I would never know about Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Oh! Oh! I do know about The Secret of NIMH !

I thought, that way of thinking was lost to Time.
But, No....It was with us as recently as 2012

On December 5, 2012 the US House of Representatives passed legislation approved earlier by the US Senate removing the word "lunatic" from all federal laws in the United States.[1] President Obama signed this legislation into law on December 28, 2012.[6]

Walking and talking on Moonlit Nights was a special intimate pleasure.
Playing with our MoonShadows was high-class entertainment,
before the screens were invited into our homes.

We had no idea what dominating and untrustworthy guests they would be.
To be fair, we were warned and put regulations in place to protect us.
Those regulations were dismantled. Who's to 'Blame' is for another Thread.

I was sitting alone, washing my feet and sobbing.

It's a good thing I don't have neighbors that can see me.
Because I am fairly sure they would label me, "Lunatic".

Oh, yes - I should put that on the wiki then?

I thought, when I first clicked "Before" on Coincidence, that the Before link wasn't there once I got back to 1. (It is now, so maybe I was hallucinating.) I knew I had written more, but since that part of the chat was just me being clueless, I thought maybe it wasn't canon.

When FTH suggested I check the config file, I tried to go to http://1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info/bsta/coin/.config and that took me to page 0 of before, which I had thought was gone forever. By then, however, I was already thinking of it as "not part of the story", so I didn't include it.

That would be a snazzy Avatar.

My favorite Story from The Time Thread was a story about someone in Real Life proposing a dam across The Strait of Gibraltar.
I don't remember clearly. Were the pros and cons explained? Does anyone else remember the page of that conversation?

It is in our human nature to want to mess around with our Earth.
It is common knowledge a bridge has been proposed at the Strait.

That would be a very high maintenance bridge.

This last wip has been full of molpish posts from the past, but discovering bsta was certainly the most fun I have had so far.

Before ggh made the NewPage, I was about to submit a post that began: "Ohhh...That makes a lot more sense now!" But the page reloaded and my post was lost. I had to attend to outside business so I got ninja'd.
Quick list of replies and questions:
Spoiler:
balthasar_s wrote:The values of ?s= in the button interface:
It's the state in which the tape interface will be after pressing the button.
It's a 6-bit number. One bit for each button. Leftmost button is 32, next is 16, then 8, 4, 2 and 1.
So s=17 means that > and || are pressed.
Numbers that don't make sense physically are interpreted as 0 or 1.
The button image file names match their state values but they are hexadecimal.

Ohhh...That makes a lot more sense now!
I had the value and name fields backwards.
I think that the link I have listed for the stop button is wrong.

GnomeAnne wrote:Excellent.
And is the B for balthesar, the b side of the tape, or is it the enhancement level?
the pause button:

ggh wrote:Any idea what ENHANCED DETAIL LEVEL might mean?

I reckon It's referring to MSCHA's enhancement software that revealed otherwise invisible raptors and trebuchets, but I could be wrong.
Also, I did not do the yes hopefully.

First of all, that's the "record" button, you idiot. But I'm curious what plans, if any, Balthazar had for it. Did you include the depressed button image just for completeness? Or would it have become a button under different conditions? Did adding the underscore just remove the top half of the image regardless of which button it was? What triggered the different types of interference?

I love the on my own song, it reminds me of this one, by Julia Ecklar.

http://xkcd-time.wikia.com/wiki/OTC_Man ... rfall2.gif
Wow. That would make a wonderful avatar, but I think the small size would obfuscate the coolness of it. Perhaps just a portion of the falls itself, instead of the whole image?

I must have been very tired to have posted those images with my real name in them. This thread is very detrimental to my sleep habbits.

In the URL, the text after /coin/ is interpreted as a number. Anything what's not a number becomes 0.
GnomeAnne wrote:I think that the link I have listed for the stop button is wrong.
The stop button link is s=0.
In most such interfaces pressing the stop button releases any other buttons (except pause which is usually independent - but not here) but the button does not stay pressed.
Or would it have become a button under different conditions?
No. the tape is write-protected.
I would not allow you to overwrite bsta with some 2words.
Did adding the underscore just remove the top half of the image regardless of which button it was?
No, it's not as simple as removing the top half. These are independent files.
Today evening I will show you an xcf file.
What triggered the different types of interference?
After clicking a button link, the new state was written to a file on the server. Then, based on that state, the new version of the bsta page was generated.
In the future I will make the source code of bsta-related things available.

ETA: Congratulations, ggh, GnomeAnne, and everyone else who contributed to the discovery and activation of bsta.
And also thunk who wrote one post which triggered the chain reaction that finally resulted in creating a bsta.
During the time of discovery some things went totally different than I expected. (which is unavoidable when doing things like this) I had to quickly adapt and also improvise a little. Also I made one mistake and had to make it look like it should have been like that.

Looking at the timer you will notice that the wait times are longer than they were last times.
This thing requires more effort per frame than the previous one.
The ong time is recauculated after each ong based on the number of uploaded frames waiting in the ongqueue.
So if my upload rate gets faster the ongrate will increase as well. Otherwise, it will decrease (Just like the bOTTeriada)

ETA2: where do the names of the gif files on the pre-activation bsta pages (and the recreation page names) come from:
nd - because it pretends to be a regular iNDex page.
kw - the stop button is a square ("KWadrat")
pp - the fforward button has 2 triangles pointing right ("Prawo")
ll - the rbackward button has 2 triangles pointing left ("Lewo")
tr - the play button is a triangle ("TRójkąt")
ng - the page has an actual oNG.

I don't know... I kinda enjoy it, but I have low standards. It's not as good as anything Pixar... maybe on par with Happy Feet? If you watched the same trailer I just did, it's better than that, and funnier, but not fantastic. Sure, watch it with the friend's kids, but maybe have a beer or two as well. The Little Wonder is watching A Troll in Central Park right now... I'm going to need something stronger.

There was a path that led to the bstart. You did experience something. I don't want to destroy this by telling about other version which is not what happened. I don't want you to regret not seeing something from the original plan. You saw something that was not in the plan because your actions caused it to be a better option.
The timeline that actually happened is the correct one because that's the one we are in.

Changing some of the plans according to the situation was unavoidable, because it was interactive.

You could be right.
I am so very curious, but I am curious believing that if I knew, I would get to appreciate the experience from even another dimension, and I am a glutton for this experience. But if the opposite were true, that would be a shame. I am still curious. But you are the one who knows.

Maybe it's time for me to follow the decree:

GnomeAnne wrote:Decree: Describe your fondest memories or favorite events from the OTT.
I'm going to stick with some bits I've mentioned before, like actual recorded OTT songs - that first one i heard by jovialbard really grabbed me, and there was just something about Blitz like the Wind, that really captured that moment. BlitzGirl's first present present, the NP1000 party... but let me also get a little closer to the present.

Eight mips ago. I knew that taixzo had authored t-1, and it needed to be revealed, but I had no idea how to do that revelation justice. I couldn't think of where to begin. And I really needed to figure out something soon, because taixzo knew I knew. On NP2466, appears Scene 50 of AotC. I love love love AotC, so I read it right away, and there is a part about:
Spoiler:
someone who they hope can help find who's behind something, and it finishes
ucim wrote:They come upon a door, and The Pope knocks. As the door opens, tinkling music is heard as a striking woman in a long shimmering blue and yellow dress answers. The Pope kneels.
The Pope wrote:ggh? Smopu hvala nuvi dict amuah!
and the world just stopped. I am stunned. I can't stop drinking in those words.
Rapture.
So apart from the obvious reasons to be in heaven, this is going to take care of the reveal... I think. Maybe?
But Jose doesn't actually tip his hand at all, and instead leaves me to do the hardest waiting I have ever done here for the next ten days as a test of my faith. When Act 3, scene 22 hit the thread, oh, the relief! So much to delight in, but first, just a wall of relief. Amazing.

And even more recently:
Two nights ago. I'm in a chatroom that I don't understand. This has been engineered by balthasar. There are bits of conversation between folks whose names I recognize from balthasar's world - and those conversations seem authentic to me. At first I think I'm there to get information for the puzzle, but, laugh at me if you like: it's becoming less and less apparent to me that where I am isn't real. It's entirely possible to me that I'm in a legit chat area used by balthasar's co-workers/associates - the ones who the characters in bftf are based upon. Maybe balthasar has hacked together a web interface to this chat so that he can mix together his people IRL with his people on the OTT. I don't know. All I see is that I am somewhere. They're not writing in Polish, but maybe they have to use English because of one or more English-speaking associates or clients.

For a while I'm writing silly stuff to them because I'm thinking of kosmiczne bzdety along with the mysteries I want to solve, but then I begin to feel like I shouldn't be "messing with them." Then - uh-oh - FTH starts asking me questions, and I start backtracking on things. He seems like he's genuinely trying to help me out with the tech, and then, as I tell him more about what's going on at my end of Coincidence, I start to worry that I'm telling him too much. What if I'm ruining everything, or if balthasar gets in trouble for this? He's asking questions; what am I going to do? It's like that moment when a cop is asking you a question and you're going to have to decide if you should lie before that next word comes out of your mouth. My heart is quickening and I'm flushed, and calling out on the thread for help.

So... there is balthasar, holding my hand on the thread, so that I can give up enough information in the chat to move the whole thing along to where I'll find out those guys are in 2010. And that my fears were ridiculous.
And there is balthasar, entering the chat as bicyclesonthemoonFromTwothousandFifteen (BFTF), to twist the whole thing into a Tom Stoppard play, before setting up the final plot point and delivering the payoff clue to the next stage of launching bsta. I'm left with my jaw hanging open. This is tight. This is brilliant.

So the there was a tape interface involved in the bstarting the ongs.
But do you know that this is not the first time I used something like it?

On my old (before Time) website which I originally made in late 2007 or early 2008 the interface used for some of the navigation was also a tape player.
The other part of the interface were sheets of paper. I wanted the web pages to be actual pages.

On the botcastle I made an archive of that website (not English). It is available here:
http://baltixy.bicyclesonthemoon.info

The tape inerface will reappear somewhere in the future.

My issue wasn't a big deal. I was just surprised that the page told me that I needed to prove my humanity without offering me a way to do that. If the error message even just suggested that I refresh the page, I wouldn't have thought anything odd.

Yeah it shouldn't be a major fix when I get around to it, but it's definitely the kind of usability issue I want and need to know about it.

On the main page, the Other Site Features.
I think the colour of the hyperlinks is a little bit to similar to the colour of the background rectangles they are in, at least for me. Anything else should be ok.

ETA: I can repeat the GrapeChannel problem:
1. go to timelessriver.net
2. follow the HyperWaitForce link
3. Go back to the main page by using the browser's back button.
4. follow the GrapeChannel link
5. enter the human-proove text
6. "There was an error retrieving your user session information."

This happened in two different browsers today.

current bftfreplay is 546 - what a coincidence.

Tech Support

Postby GnomeAnne » Fri Dec 16, 2016 12:17 am UTC

I have never used iphoto, but if you have it on your desktop or stuck to the task bar thing at the bottom of the screen you can try dragging the picture onto the iphoto icon. You can also try opening iphoto, and dragging the picture to the iphoto window, or see if there is an import command somewhere, perhaps in the file menu. If you want to download a picture you should click on it or follow the link for the picture so you get the full resolution rather than the thumbnail that is shown in the thread.

1190: Time - BSTA 3

So... what do you think about BSTA OTT ONG style? I've been posting screenshots like this, and from now on I'll try to remember to link back to the BSTA viewer. Inside this spoiler are two different versions: a slightly larger screengrab, and one that is just the image with the title and caption over and underneath in quote boxes.
Spoiler:

Also, this format is just perfect for this story-shaped-thing.
Let's explore it and see what happens.

I'd kinda like to continue to use that top (unspoilered) style, because I think it's the prettiest, but could change if y'all'd prefer something else. It is true that posting the image and quote boxes would be more convenient if someone wants to quote either just the image or the text alone, but I hesitate, because it's just so unattractive.

Ok, let's start with the analysis:

The calendar in the background says "June" in Polish. According to Google, lines in a Polish calendar start with MondayH and end with SundayH. Assuming the calendar shows the correct month at the time that this scene in BSTA takes place, it is set in June 2016 (or any other year in which June 1 was a WednesdayH, e.g. 2011, 2005, 1994, ...).

That one is a png file. It should be the right size, but if not I can upload a different one tomorrow evening.

ggh wrote: Oh GnomeAnne! What an amazing fall-let! How you do that?

I broke the gif down into individual images and spliced together the ones I needed. I am new to the software I was using and couldn't figure out how to get it to fade between images, so it looks a little choppy.

I really like the blue frame, we could use attachments instead of links so that quoting gives the title text.

As alluded to in BSTA, this scene mirrors the first fewpix (frames?) of the OtherOthercomic which it is inspired by. That OtherOthercomic started on the same day in-universe as outside of it, so one might conclude that BSTA starts in 2016 as well.

One might also conclude that as in all of Balthasar's works, the bicycle will be a major arc motif.

EDIT: In earlier frames in that OtherOtherComic, the command-box (which follows the > below the picture) was open to user submission. Perhaps somemolpy wants to try that?

thunk wrote:As alluded to in BSTA, this scene mirrors the first fewpix (frames?) of the OtherOthercomic which it is inspired by.

Ohhh! That thing! Yeah, the date reference did seem a tiny bit familiar, but I thought I was just seeing things. I never went through Homestuck - it looked treeish, but like a bigger time suck than I could afford.

So, I don't see a way to type into the frame, but we've got Coincidence and Two Words....

I don't have time to make a gif, but he looks like he's wondering where the narrator's voice is coming from, doesn't he? Or, that might just be me projecting Stranger than Fiction.

ZoomanSP wrote:Ok, let's start with the analysis:

The calendar in the background says "June" in Polish. According to Google, lines in a Polish calendar start with MondayH and end with SundayH. Assuming the calendar shows the correct month at the time that this scene in BSTA takes place, it is set in June 2016 (or any other year in which June 1 was a WednesdayH, e.g. 2011, 2005, 1994, ...).
Sounds good to me. :)
I wondered what that other thing was by the door. It seems like the right location for a lightswitch, so I foolishly googled "Polish lightswitch" which showed me this:

It looks perfect, but of course, it's the synonym: "1 Gang 2 Way Light Switch, Flat Polish Gold" Okay, whatever - if there's light switches out there that look like that, that's probably serendipitously it.

ETA3: Now there's a BB button on bsta to make the bbcode for easy ONGing!

ETA4: What happened? Did I kill the thread?
Requested a magnet? I'm sorry I'm so super-slow, but you will get it

Did you flip that switch you found? Maybe you should flip it back?
