I looked around, but I couldn't seem to find a thread for any upper midwest meetups. I know there are a few people from the area, and I was just curious if anyone lived very close to me. I apologize if this is redundant, but I did at least look.

Anyway, I live pretty much at the border of MN and WI, in a town called Cottage Grove. Its slightly south and east of the twin cities.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting this much response this fast.

Chicago seems a decent idea. Its only about 7 hours from here, and I'm more than willing to drive that far.

I'd rather vote for Madison, because I've driven in Chicago, and was displeased by the experience.

Yeah, I wouldn't reccomend driving in downtown Chicago but there are a lot of good places out in the suburbs that are easy to get to by car.

Or, if we really wanted to get downtown without driving, we could find a nice place on the outskirts of town/suburbs and catch a train/bus/other into town.

I think Milwaukee would be a good city for a midwest meetup. I'm pretty sure there's a ferry that runs from Michigan. Plus for ND, SD, MN People, it's not much further.

Madison or Milwaukee is a good idea. Chicago sounds like a good idea, but it's still so crazy down there. And I'm closer to Milwaukee...

Actually Milwaukee isn't really that bad for driving. Even downtown.

I think we need to start picking specific locations that we should meet. If a bunch of xkcd readers all show up in Milwaukee, odds are pretty good that they won't meet if that's as far as the plan goes.

I would like to state for the record that I believe this thread was started by someone from the east coast. This conspiracy theory relies on the fact that people from the midwest generally know that ND and IL are 11 hours apart, closest edge to edge. That is a huge area. I don't even want to drive from St Paul to Madison for a beer, screw Milwaukee and Chicago.

I was contemplating throwing an Nog N' Pie party the weekend between Christmas and New Year's, anyone want to be invited? As a second, and even lazier route for me, I live a few houses down from a bar, we could meet there pretty much any time. Third option, go to the MN Rollergirls bout this weekend, I'll be there, I'm at most of them.

Since there seems to be much disagreement as to where xkcd fans in the midwest would like to meet, it sounds like there needs to be some sort of special reason one might be willing to go the extra mile, or 60 miles, or 200 miles..
In spite of http://xkcd.com/250/ I might suggest seeing mythbusters Grant Imahara, an Electrical Engineer from University of Southern California and Kari Bryon at UWPlatteville (an hour west of Madison) on April 21. I realize this is out of most people's way, and that it is a Monday evening, but I am throwing an invite out to xkcd-ers one and all nonetheless. Anyone who's interested let me know, and I will keep you informed.

So, I'm a bit late to this thread, but I support Chicago.

Guys, I know driving in Chicago sucks, but go to one of the 'burbs and catch a train in. Then you can ride around the L all day, for cheap! And there is less hassle of finding parking space and stuff. Come on Chicago is awesome!

I wouldn't object to Madison, except that there's really no reason for me to be there. I couldn't be like "OK, family, I'm going to Madison for the day. To, uh, meet people from the internet," whereas I could be all "I'm going to Chicago to see some friends!"

Re: Driving in Milwaukee -- Oh. My. God. I hate Milwaukee. I have gotten lost in that damned city far too many times for my comfort. Ugh.

I believe zingmaster is implying that the Dakotas count as part of the Midwest as well, and that catering to their needs would put the gathering either in Minnesota (perhaps at the Mall of America) or at least in western Wisconsin, Eau Claire, or thereabouts. Actually, that's not a bad idea. Who's up for crashing No Brand Con?

Exactly, except I haven't heard of anyone from the Dakotas so far. It's all WI, MN, and IL. Meh. Meanwhile, I go to school in Madison, so anyplace around there would be awesome. Keep in mind I have no car, so I can't drive anywhere during the school year. <_<

I'd love to meet up with Midwest XKCD fans. I live in Kenosha, WI. Chicago is baaaaaad idea. Traffic there is like trying to fight Stallman with only a rapier. I vote Madison.
