Quite nice here today. It was "wintry" here earlier this week, but just on the day I had to be outside

Of course, "wintry" here is relative, it was sunny and 55, and later dark and 45. But the days on either side were 75.

In other news, MSWFP is preparing for an upgrade. He'll be getting a new knee for Christmas. (Not on Christmas, but right after)

It has snowed here. The roads basically shut down yesterday, because apparently nobody has ever seen snow before, despite this (the first snowfall) happening every year.

Today it was perfectly clear and not too cold, but it was terribly windy. Because we've had so little rain, the higher elevations in our area are on high alert for fire. Hopefully no one is careless with a cigarette, or tries to burn some trash.

They are predictin that we may be entering another drought, so there may be a lot more of this. I hope Pfhorrest is still safe. And I wonder how macraw87 is settling in out here.

It turns out I don't even have to switch apps anymore to find out the weather. (Who remembers the days when one had to look outside, much less go outside… but we digress…) Pokémolp RUN says:

These Pokémolp types are molpier, appear more redundantly, and give bonus Coffeestarssemenlava when OTTified.

For decree: Cold. Too cold. Not as cold as it was, but still staying below the freezing point of water at standard temperature and pressure. This week we had our first (and second) snow. Not too big a deal; a few inches. But my wife left a piece of pottery out (a plate that holds a potted plant) and it's now frozen to the deck. Hopefully it won't crack.

Today we hear the Messiah. It's heretical though; I don't think it's about Randall. :)

Well, if they're just doing the first part (the "Christmas" section) he won't have to worry about that. I think that's in part 2. Or maybe part 3. Either way, it is silly, and I was just singing it the morning, in fact. (I don't actually know how it goes, so I just sing "All we like sheep, we all like sheep." Pretty sure that's not how it goes.). Played the Messiah last night, and again this morning at a church service. Just part 1, plus a few extras (Hallelujah, of course, and Worthy is the Lamb/Amen.) Very poor planning on Randall's Handel's part not to put the Hallelujah chorus in Part 1, if you ask me.
I play it one more time on Tuesday. Pretty easy gig for me. I just sit there for 20 minutes, play for two or three, sit for another 20 minutes...

Glad you pointed to the ketchup in Lu's post, mrob. Silly dragon, hiding his ketchup in the past.

Glad to hear that the fire tornadoes have stopped, Pfhorrest. Hope you're not having issues from poor air quality. :(

The high winds have stopped around here, thank goodness. It was sunny today, but a little cool. Right now the temperature in my house is 65 deg F. The temperature in my body is 100 deg F. Ch*rping micromolps!

Random outside, quasi-related question. What is the Messiah? I mean, I've heard it, but we were at a performance that played the Hallelujah chorus part amongst other songs, and we all stood up, as you do, and GHWFP asked why, and I just said it's what you do, and I explained it was part of a larger work, but I couldn't think of the word for what that work is.

Update on the local weather: Snowfall in the night and morning, about 5 cm (2 inches) of snow to clear here at my mom's place which is at a significantly higher elevation than mine.

Regarding a recent othercomic:
Spoiler:
Of course, virtual hugs to Randall and his wife, and all other cancer survivors. And some real ones to my mom, it's a regular habit anyway.
The subject is hitting rather close to home. I'm not dealing and haven't dealt with cancer in my own body, just to make that clear, but prefer not to comment any further.
Edit: Clarification expanded.

From Wikipedia:

The custom of standing for the "Hallelujah" chorus originates from a belief that, at the London premiere, King George II did so, which would have obliged all to stand. There is no convincing evidence that the king was present, or that he attended any subsequent performance of Messiah; the first reference to the practice of standing appears in a letter dated 1756, three years prior to Handel's death.

This kind of larger choral work is called an oratorio, which means it's intended for a concert setting rather than as musical theater or opera: no characters, costumes, or props.

Basically, Händel's Messiah is a long series of Bible quotes, set to music. These quotations are taken from the King James Bible, and all relate to the Messiah in some way. (For example, the text of the famous Hallelujah chorus is taken from Revelation 19:6 and Revelation 11:15.)

Sing-along Messiahs are a fun holiday activity. Generally only the first of the three parts (the Christmas section) is presented, plus a few very famous choruses from other sections, with the audience sitting quietly for the solos and standing to join in on the choruses. On the final "Amen" chorus, in which the same word is sung a mind-numbing number of times, I get a kick out of helping the people around me who don't read music figure out what page of the score the rest of us are on. Often the same person will turn to me for help several times, laughing.

Dance-along Nutcrackers are not as popular as sing-along Messiahs, for some reason.

Oh, and welcome to the One True Thread ObsessoMom!
SBN wrote:Random outside, quasi-related question. What is the Messiah? I mean, I've heard it, but...
It's an oratorio (a large choral and orchestral work with many movements, that (typically) tells an epic story of some sort). In this case, the theme is Christian story of Jesus coming as the Son of God to save mankind from itself. As to the Hallelujah chorus, story is that when the Messiah was performed for the {king|queen} of {England?}, xe stood up, perhaps because xe was stiff from sitting down so long, perhaps for emphasis (did xe know what was coming?) or perhaps just to give the future internet something to talk about. Anyway, if the {king|queen} does it, everyone does it, and the entire audience stood, and it has become a tradition.

Oratorios are awesomeful. Just sayin'.

And yes, this performance had the sheep thing. Alas, I found the performance a bit rushed; there are places (like Pifa) in which time should stand still.

Temperature's rising... we may get that plate after all! (This may be the most followed decree of all Time!)

Yes, it's "All we like sheep," not "For we like sheep." Sorry. I have gone astray-AY-ay-AY-ay-AY-ay-AY-ay-AY-ay.

Here's a link for anyone who, like me, could use a refresher.

I have failed to mention the weather, but I live in San Diego, and no one wants to hear about another flawless blue sky, with high temps in the low seventies F. Ho-hum.

I guess my choir was a bit more ... accepting: "We like four sheep". I never understood what that meant, because there are no sheep in Time. Although if you fall asleep, you lose time. Losing Time would be quite an iniquity though; there's got to be anotter way. Imagine if otters were like sheep.

And why is it that "sheeple" refers to people who, like sheep, all go the same way, whereas "...like sheep [...] have turnéd every one to his own way"?

A Holy Contradiction!

Oh... and we got the plate... it's in the garage now, slowly warming up.

Welcome home Pfhorrest! Hopefully breathing gets easier by and by.

 Those would be dangerous, I think. People running into each other vocally generally doesn't do as much damage.

ObsessoMom and ucim provided excellent information about the Messiah. The only thing I would add is that oratorios are usually written using sacred texts. But otherwise, yes, they are written like operas, with arias, choruses, and recitatives (recits--minimally accompanied sections that are almost more spoken then sung, and move the action along--"and then Joe went to the market, and bought tomatoes. But his debit card work-ed not, and the cashier scolded him, saying..."), but not staged like operas.

I love the singalong that I play for, because everybody sings everything--solos, choruses, and recits. (They don't sing the instrumental sections.) They have ringers that lead the sections, and you can sit near them if you need some help. It's the most egalitarian singalong Messiah. It's great, because I don't play on any of the solos or recits, so I get to sing those while waiting for the choruses to come along. And then there's a party afterwards. What's not to love?

King James had clearly not spent much time around sheep.

Glad you got your plate free!

If they're prodigals, should we be killing a fatted calf or something for them? If they're vegetarian, would we kill some fatted tofu?

Hugs to svenman. And Pfhorrest, I have a respirator I borrowed from my boyfriend that I can loan you. :( I hope the air quality gets better soon, thought the fires are still burning. Damn.

Thanks, all. Oratorio was the word I needed. Unfortunately, I think I've missed my chance for a sing-along Messiah this season, maybe another time.

Hope everyone stays safe from smoke, and fires, and micromolps, and earthquakes. (There's a known uptick in seismic activity following fires, so I'm predicting there will be one. Of course, predicting an earthquake on the west coast isn't exactly a long shot.)

Thanks everyone for their well-wishes. The air quality seems to be improving here; I think somehow it was worse inside my house than outside, so letting it air out today seems to have helped.

Now if only my car will be not-dead, everything will be back to normal again.

Ah, well, you got significantly more than the one word you needed. :) Redundancy is molpish; maybe verbosity is too?

Thanks for the silent monks, MistyCat. I'll have to share that on the singalong Messiah Facebug page. An alternative for those who are insecure about their singing voices.

I hope your car is not-dead, Pfhorrest.

The places nearest me, everywhere I've looked since coming home again, all seem pretty undamaged. Much less damaged than I even expected; earlier today my girlfriend and I drove through a neighborhood that, on the fire perimeter map, looks like it should be scorched earth, but in person it doesn't even look like the fire touched it. The whole Ojai valley floor seems perfectly fine, and though the hills are covered in ash, that's all scrubland and it will spring back in the spring. Plants grow back and rocks don't care, and the people and buildings seem to be fine. Even in upper Ojai, which was completely inside the fire perimeter, all the places I've looked into seem to have survived: the Ojai Foundation lost a few outbuildings but is largely intact, Happy Valley school only lost one building I think, same with Meditation Mount, and Beato's house apparently came through unscathed somehow.

What's it like for you?

Now that I've aired my house out (seems somehow the air inside the closed-up house managed to get worse than the air outside, which is now mostly good), I'm doing pretty well. It's really just the broken-down car that's keeping everything from being normal again now.

Well summer sure is happening. It's a fair bit into the evening but it's still in the high 20s outside and there's no wind, so it's not very comfortable indoors, apart from the middle of the house which is air-conditioned. We've given up on an evening cool change and have opened up the rest of the house (bedrooms are at either end) but the AC isn't gonna do much for the extremities very quickly, even with the air ducts blowing.
