Docking cable?

Postby enk » Tue Jan 29, 2008 4:20 pm UTC

When I go to bed with my laptop, having cables connected to several sides of it is kinda annoying. I need power, 'net and possibly external storage. While more and better batteries could alleviate the need for the first and wifi the two others, I was wondering if there was another solution.

A docking station would be clumsy, but has anyone seen a docking cable that only needs to connected at one place?

most laptops have docking connections on the bottom so I don't see how that would work. What's wrong with a docking station?

I just guess it would be clumsy, maybe uncomfortable at have on the lap. And if the docking station has the rear plugs placed inconveniently, it's no better than before.

I found this, which takes care of most of it, but still not the power, though.

uh, it's a usb hub with some internal usb to PS2 adapters built in (they only cost like 50 cents anyway) along with a serial and parallel port? You really have anything that uses that stuff anymore? I know you don't actually have a RS232 device...

Yeah, don't need all of it, but it was USB and ethernet I was interested in.

that is kind of nifty but I don't know how well it would work. I've had bad luck with USB-for-networking attempts. Course, I also seem incapable of setting my router right (it's fucking brain surgery) so that could have something to do with it...

Have all the cables come from the same direction (one that's out of the way for your day to day activities), and wrap them all up with electrical or duct tape.

Use velcro cable ties. They come off a lot easier :P.

Hey man I use my serial connection for work. Not at home in the bed though unless I'm getting kinky.

To say we know the reason why?
Some are born; some men die
Beneath one infinite sky.
There'll be war, there'll be peace.
But everything one day will cease.
All the iron turned to rust;
All the proud men turned to dust.

Not the worst idea, but then I'll need another power supply when I go somewhere. And it doesn't solve the problem of having a cable plugged in to each side of the back and one in the side. I still have to be careful not breaking the connectors. If there was only one and the connector was recessed, it'd be much better :)

Oh my god, classic. I couldn't imagine the nasty things that could be done with serial in bed... like... laying there... and bending the pins.... el oh el
