Someone asked if I were a scientist while I were perusing at the book store yesterday. I am not one yet (professionally), but it made my day anyway. :)

I wish I could ride my bike to work, but I'd have to cross two highways and other major roads. I can't believe we had a freeze last night!

*sigh*
You realized you've just reminded me that no matter how bad politically the US may become, Canada can't be my refuge exactly for that reason?

Seriously, how do you live like that?! Anything below 75 and I need a sweater.

I've done nothing but complain about this town since I got here for such a reason, I hate the cold, I miss Toronto where you only have to worry about people splashy yucky slush on you as they drive half on the sidewalk like a freaking maniac *sigh* the good old days.

I shall soon remedy this by moving to Australia.. if I ever get enough of my pennies together in the same place at the same time to afford it.

So that'll be my good thing for today, I made my budget for the next 9 months.. or at least I plan to. At the very least I'll open excel and add the title "Budget" at the top.

I'm gonna go play civ.

Dude, it's going down to like -25C with the wind chill tonight. Supposed to be the last of the cold snap though.

I love Toronto like I love a cold beer in one hand and Jessica Alba in the other, but I'll never get used to the unpredictable bitter cold, followed by the weird spurts of balmy summer like temps.

Ya actually I heard you guys were getting it worse this winter than we are (the cold avoids me cause I'm tough like that), we've only had a handul of really bad days. I'm gonna be back south side in May at some point, I promised my father I'd be in town for his birthday , we'll have to arrange some form of bubble tea expedition. Belial is welcome if you can make the trip lol.

@ Damien: Ya I'm coming in November (providing I don't incure any major expenses between now and then, if I do then Feb'08) .. trying to plan to come for a month. Hence the budgeting crap. It actually makes me sick to look at all the money that should be in my bank account right now according to how much I *have* to pay out vs. how much I made.

So I live in the Boston area, where it has been warm during the day and cold at night (read: ice everywhere).

Today, as I was walking up the main hill in my campus, this one kid was about to try to walk down the hill across a patch of grass (the main path is closed for construction) instead of walking [farther] around the alternate path. His friends wisely suggested "dude, you're going to fall...it's icy!"

"I got it yo."

Can anyone guess what happened about 3 seconds later? I'll give you a hint, I burst out laughing.

I will agree the most. :P

Also that is why I hate budgeting so much! Looking down and realising just how much you spent on crap. Happens to me all the time. Even today I went into work in order to buy some shoes to make myself feel better about having to buy textbooks. (Luckily the shoes I liked did not fit, so I remain $25 towards the good end of things.)

@ Gordon

Where do you live? I'm from Saskatoon, but in Edmonton now.

I miss proper cold. My parents gave me a Canadian Military extreme cold weather parka for Christmas about eight years ago. I wore it that Winter in Saskatoon, and never since. Anything above about -35, and there's no point wearing it - you're just as well off in a wool overcoat with room for bulky sweaters and scarves. But at -40 or -45, then that parka really shines.

Here in Edmonton, everyone bitches endlessly if they have to walk 20 metres from a warm car to a heated building at -20. For the most part, they don't seem to own proper winter clothes - apparently they haven't noticed they live on the Canadian prairies, or something.

Your post and fortune (6) reminded me to look for good things!

Also I kicked some ass in my track workout!

Also, to you people talking about pansies that can't handle the cold, in California you occasionally see people out in fur-lined winter jackets on sunny 60-degree days. Tonight it was probably 60 degrees and there were guys at the track running and playing soccer in hoodies. Hilarious.

EDIT: I guessed that fortune was documented in section 1 of the manual. I was wrong!

@dragonfrog

Mostly in Southern Ontario
-grew up in Cambridge, spent most of my teen years hanging around downtown Toronto
-Windsor for 2 years, spent most of my time avoiding all things Detroit related
-Toronto (ok, Oakville specifically) for a few months
-Thunder Bay (14-16 hour drive North-west! in the summer anyway probably take twice that in the winter) been here since September

*wonders why the thread title isn't present anywhere in posting.php*

The Australia trip looks to be happening in February'08 instead now :( 2 more months to wait but that means more moneys and more time to spend with people

I ran a relay race last August in Colorado with a bunch of sciencey-types; our team name was, "Back off, man, I'm a scientist!" and we made team shirts with that written on the back. Not long after the relay I was doing a speed workout at the local HS track, which is apparently the venue for lots of pickup soccer games and a hangout for moms that push strollers around the inside lane of the track while they talk on their cell phones and their children, and a little girl came up to me and asked if I was actually a scientist. Then she asked me if I was doing an experiment.

Ouch! My current ride is eight miles each way, mostly uphill to work. In a few months the office will be moving so it is only six miles, and a bit flatter. I looked around for a while to be able to find the back roads that are nice for a ride.

It was a bit more chilly in the morning than I had dressed for (bike shorts and a wool longsleeve t-shirt), but not too bad. It really looks like spring has hit, or at least that winter is over. Of course, I still expect one more big cold snap before it is really spring.

It's one of those things in newspapers or whatnot where, if you saw an intriguing stranger, you can say "You in the red shirt at this place and this time, our eyes met, I felt there was a connection! Call me!"

In my case, it was a bit more direct since he knew my name and we'd interacted in class. It was actually a really sweet message. I'm debating as to whether I want to let him know that I have a boyfriend.

If the alternative to "telling him you have a boyfriend" is "never speaking of it again", I'd go with the former.

its specific enough to get a good message out of it. its general enough to apply that message to just about every aspect of your life. I'm reading it for a business class project but it helped me realize i dont have ot be afraid of moving a few states north...

from the place i've lived my entire life, away from my friends, away from my family, to a place where i dont know anyone, where i dont know the streets, where they have real winters, with snow, and summers that wont try to kill me, where there is a good school and an infinte number of possibilities...

i'd say its a good book. and you can read it in about half an hour.

The fashion police are focusing their efforts on places that are much less fashionable than southern California. They're currently conducting mullet stings in the southeast.

(Actually there's a dude at work here with a mullet. It is extremely out-of-place in the bay area, that's for sure.)

Not necessarily true. Jeans and a nice, close fitting shirt has pretty much been the fashion for the past 50 years, and will continue to be the trend until a more comfortable and durable material comes into the market. Fashion also has a lot to do with practicality; no one wears leather pants or plastic shirts because it's horribly unpractical.

Choosing colors that don't beg for attention and being comfortable in your clothing is a fashion in of itself. It's the Abercrombie twats who walk around with their perfectly formed bodies that put a bad image on all us regular people who wear nice clothes.
