Is it just me, or has the lists of Top Images and New Images not updated in months? I'm sure davean will have some complicated explanation about load-balancing or something coming up.

The first 3 sites are picture rating sites. The last is a site to rate the best thing.

They've been that way for more than a year, IIRC. I remember talk about a future redesign of the ranking algorithm.

There's a bash.org style thing going using the same algorithm, but it's not run by Randall.

Of course the top list doesn't change much, you have to submit better images for it to change often.

And I assume that the algorithm has something to do with number of votes/views/clicks/links/etc.? making it nearly impossible to knock out a picture, etc. that has been there for a really long time?

They use an algorithm that is not dependant upon the age of the contestant, only upon it's win/loss record relative to other contestant's win/loss record, as opposed to wins overall. I think it's on the about pages.

But... but... Condorcet voting has all *kinds* of problems!

Granted, with hundreds of contestants, the likelihood of cycling is vanishingly small compared with the 25% limit when there are only 3. But still, the mere possibility of a "ranking" like A>B>C>...>Z>A makes me dislike it.

I don't believe so; I was under the impression xkcd wrote much of the ranking algorithm himself. If it was ever based on it, it would by now be somewhat removed.

Both algs involved are standard ones well know from Mathematics. I did implement them myself but plenty of other people could have also.

thefunniest.info appears to be no longer extant; I get a GoDaddy parking page. thecutest.info and thefairest.info, oddly, seem OK.

TheFunniest and BestThing are two of my favourite timewasters and that they are still broken pains me.
