Pi Day

Postby reevey » Fri Mar 14, 2008 3:32 pm UTC

This looked fun, especially the bit about Contact...

"The late physicist Carl Sagan, in his novel Contact, imagined a time when Earth scientists were sufficiently able to unravel enough of pi to find encoded messages from our creators..."

- you mean like this one? http://www.xkcd.com/10/

Well shit. I'm a day late (and a dollar short?). Oh well, next year, I suppose.
Totally not a hypothetical...

It's kinda ironic: the admin at my school put the math/science midterms on that day. All the math/science department almost died from laughing when they heard it announced on the loudspeakers. The admin still doesn't get it.

So, you can't actually search for "pi" on these forums. I had to google "pi day xkcd forum" to find this venerable thread...

But anyway, I was looking for something fun to do to celebrate Pi day, which is this Saturday. Does anyone have any suggestions? Some thoughts of my own:

The local meet up. ( Unfortunately for me, the closest meet up is about a hundred miles away, and that gets tricky on public transport.)

The local sculpture garden in my home town has a giant, shiny Pi symbol. Not sure what I would do there, though.

Watch the film "Pi"

Bake some pies for the homeless.

Edit: there's a website dedicated to this .http://www.piday.org

Roleplay as a Private Investigator?

A dame came in, walking on a stunning set of grayscale legs.

"Name's mohini," I said, "you must be here for PI day."

You just the post above? The whole thing?

On topic, the Mathematics Faculty at the University of Waterloo is giving out free pi today for Pi day. They figure the turn out will be better on a Friday than a Saturday. However a bunch of my Mathie friends will be watching Pi and making pies tomorrow. Should be a good couple of pie filled days.

Last year I went to a party with many homemade pies. One of my roommates made a grape pie. It was a pie day + St. Patty's day party. Pie and beer is very nice. On the way home I found a cat that I thought was lost, but when I called the number on the tag they said it was just very affectionate and liked to wander around. I took a picture of the cat. It was very friendly. I may have drunk-dialed Sarah.

High school normally gets out at 3:15, but today the principal came on the loudspeaker and explained that, because of the holiday tomorrow, we were all getting out a minute early.

Today is a day to gather with our friends and family, play video games through the night, and stuff our faces with Key Lime at 1:59.

I tried to get people excited about e day, but it doesn't have such an appealing food.

Happy Chinese Pi day!

Although actually they write the date: Yr/Mo/Dy So it's rarely actually Pi day in china. April 21st 2031?

In Europe do they write it Dy/Mo/Yr? Then Pi day would be Jan 3rd 2042? I can see why American Pi day is more popular.
