My house is boring!

Postby Nexus_1101 » Tue Mar 25, 2008 9:55 am UTC

Ok, so the problem i have is that i have just moved in to a new house, and althogh it is a nice house i am renting, so i cant change any of the fixtures or lower the celing like i did in my old room.
all the walls have nothing on them, and they look boring.
i was going to get some posters and what not, but i thought i would throw my problem out to the Awesome XKCD-ers... people... err... you know... you lot!

so can you help me make my house that little bit more less boring?

posters, pictures, shelves with knick knacks on the walls, turning on music, throwing a party, getting wasted at said party, etc

lots of things can be done

For starters, a wall painting party with some friends. After that, nice colorful furniture, posters etc. Personal touches, I suppose.

so far the best thing i have is a blow-up sofa, the fun part is when you try to throw the other person of by jumping on it.

i would love to paint the walls but i am renting and i am not alowed, if i do i have to pay for them to be returned to thair original colour.

Before making any changes that can be permanent, check with the landperson who receives your hard-earned money. Some may be lenient and let you do almost anything, as long as it follows two rules:

1. It doesn't cause any major damage to the structure.
2. It can easily be redone or replaced.

Painting usually follows both of these rules. Paint the rooms any colour you like, then when you get ready to move, paint over with Kilz primer. Since you'd have to pay for it yourself, see if the landperson will give you a discount by letting you buy the materials, and doing it yourself. Maybe ask if as long as you buy the materials and do the work yourself, you not pay anything.

Others, however, will be assholes and won't let you even hang a single picture, much less put up a poster with scotch tape. I've never known any to do that personally.

One thing you can do is go to a nearby thrift store or second-hand store. You will find all sorts of interesting paintings (most are prints), pictures, framed posters, and other bizarre crap you can hang on the walls. The plus side is that it's cheap.

One thing though: If you plan to hang pictures or other framed items on the walls, get picture hooks. They cause less damage to the wall than a straight nail or screw.

Image

As you can see, the nail goes in at an angle, which leaves less of a visable hole in the wall. When you get ready to move, you can fill in said hole with a dab of spackling.

How has no-one said ballpit yet?!

Other random ideas include a fussball table, mini pool table, seating areas made of poofs and beanie cubes; uhm, I don't really know, actually.

A picture of something you really treasure, or yourself, or your friends/family, or a picture you took yourself, blown up and put on the wall, makes a room seem far more personal. Or a wall covered in a delightfully eclectic mix of different photo frames and inside are pictures of (see first sentence of this paragraph) and other cool pictures or even objects.

Also, hi Nexus, haven't seen you around in a while! *wave*

Or toothpaste.

If you're really worried about damaging the walls, a lot of real estate agents I've dealt with recommend a 3M-brand hook with a removable adhesive backing. When you leave, you pull a tab on the the adhesive pad which stretches off the wall leaving no residue and doing no damage. They can't hold a great deal, but for a bunch of smallish-to-medium photo frames down a hallway they're perfect.

I suppose if you can't paint the walls you might hang something on them instead? Like a light-colored curtain or something?

Oh, and a potted plant.

No, you're probably right, but ball pits are so hard to say no too.
As for what else you could do, I find that Salvation Army, Good Will, and random garage/tag/estate sales are a great place to find cheap furniture. It's really just about keeping your eyes open, looking a bit, and remembering that just because you don't like the way something looks doesn't mean you can't make it look different with a little bit of effort.

Mural.

Get some friends over (especially artistically inclined ones), get some paint, and talk about things that interest you and them put them on your wall. As a bonus it can be regularly modified to add new concepts or change old ones.

Yeah, a ballpit - besides being prohibitively expensive - would probably be easier to deal with than a massive stereo system that plays heavy metal all day and night.

Wait, what?! Teach me that trick!

I'm not sure how old you are, but you made it sound as though yo'uve just moved into your OWN house. If you are above the age of 22, I feel as though you are too old to hang up posters. You need to frame them. And you have to select carefully. My torn and tattered sublime poster which followed me everywhere since I was 14 was retired, along with the melting city scape, two dragons kicking the crap out of one another, and a pretty solid collection of super heroes being badass.

I'll probably put all the super heroes up in my bathroom, and get aroudn to framing the collage of national geographic cutouts.

But seriously, if your entertaining, your to old to have unframed stuff up!

First of all, no one is ever too old for anything. You hang that goddamn Star Wars poster on your bedroom door. That being said, I have a bunch of mirrors up at my house and a number of match votive candle holder. I am one person in a two bedroom apartment, I was seriously considering turning the second bedroom until a ball pit. Instead I went with the more generally useful option, put up a table with a bunch of chairs, a mini-fridge, some bookshelves, bar area and made a D&D/L5R room. I also considered just naming my apartment "The Ball Pit". The dude to chick ratio is a bit off at my house.

The mirror idea would be awesome.

I also suggest printing some stuff out, find online or make cool images and Rasterbate them to whatever size you want.
Or grab a camera and go take random pictures and get them printed.

Make an entire room sideways. Mount furniture on the walls, carpet it, make fake windows on the floor/ceiling, etc.
Anything to confuse the people that come over.

Put up a fake wall, or put a moveable bookshelf in front of a door and have a secret hidden room.

Also, I suggest lights! Lots of different colored lights. You can do amazing things with cool lighting.

For the love of god, don't hang up old "awesome" posters or any other dorm room style adornments. Every time I go into a friends home and see freaking posters of bands or lamps shaped like jagermeister bottles I just want to... well, a baseball bat and jail time are both involved. Use your imagination, and yes, I would do THAT!

Stage getting beaten up by your friend with a baseball bat, and then filing for assault with weapon? That's pretty harsh, man.

Because obviously vandalism and assault is so much more mature than hanging up a poster of a musician you enjoy.

Put up whatever you want. Cover your walls in posters if that's what you like.

here's a crazy idea i came up with the last time i painted. they make that painter's tape in different colors. you can do abstract shapes on the wall with colored tape that easily comes off.

if i do get to paint the walls i w just mite do that.

@werg67564: my misses already wants to pu a mirror on the celing in our room, although i think shes joking.

@ izawwlgood: i lowered a portion of the celing addad fairy lights to look like stars and had lights shine out from the sides to light the room. oh and also i am 20 and renting this place through my company. yes 20 and i am a director :D *cough* self employed of a limited company *cough*

i have a lot of black and white photography, i am contemplating getting a cuple of large frames and putting them on the wall.

also shouldent the writing of your reflection be backwards so that it appers forwards in the mirror, that would be much cooler

Use your imagination, and yes, I would do THAT!

Because obviously vandalism and assault is so much more mature than hanging up a poster of a musician you enjoy.

Put up whatever you want. Cover your walls in posters if that's what you like.

Dammit, I forgot to be 100% serious on the internet! What have I done? The humanity!

You know, maturity never entered the equation. I simply think things like that look horrible. I thought they looked horrible at 12, too. That them there be my opinion.

Just in case: I know my post was confusing and some of you may be left wondering what to do. Let me clear that up by saying: you shouldn't beat people with bats. Put down the bats, folks!

Buy several venomous snakes and release them into your house. I guarantee you will never be bored again.
