i love that "realistic" C&H. my mom loved calvin and hobbes so i grew up reading the books. we had "something under the bed is drooling", "the days are just packed" and "homicidal psycho jungle cat". no matter how many times i read each one i never got tired of reading them again.

i also have to say that i HATE the stupid calvin rip-off decals that are all over cars now. they suck. a lot. >=( you know, the peeing ones.

What's really bad about them is Watterson hadn't/isn't making one thin penny off them. They're all bootlegged. He fought like hell to keep them from being licensed to the point where they could be merchandised. He felt if they had, he would have lost complete control over the strip. It would have been too mechanical in some ways.

One of the most popular strips that has been produced on various bootleg products (mostly T-shirts in some colleges) is the strip with C&H dancing to classical music being played at 78 RPM. Panels had been used on some shirts. I remember seeing one of those shirts at my middle school The kid who had it must have had an older sibling who got it for them, or else they bought it off one of those street vendors who usually sell knock-off merchandise.

I bought some illegal C&H merchandise from a street vendor before I knew it was illegal. It's a shirt that has one of the dancing Calvin pictures, and the caption says: "God put me on Earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I am so far behind I will never die." Since then, it's been a constant war: I don't want to wear it, because it disrespects Watterson's artistic integrity, but I do want to wear it, because it's Calvin and Hobbes! I haven't worn it for a good while, just because the quote has nothing to do whatsoever with Bill Watterson, and I don't think he would much have cared for it. I have plenty other funny t-shirts, and I can express my love for the strip in entirely non-shirt-dependent ways.

As regards the peeing Calvins, the reason they've proliferated so much is that they're made by little independent sleazeballs with basement sticker machines, and it would just be completely impractical to hunt every one of them down and stick them all with lawsuits. Sad, but unavoidably true.
The drawings for those things aren't even from a strip! I think most of them are hand-drawn by the makers, though some might be doctored from some strip.

Those altered images came from several scenes where Calvin is plotting against Susie with snowballs, I think. I'd have to look through the strips made in 1993 and 1994 to find the original expressions, but I am pretty certain that is from where they came. I have noticed there have been an increasing amount of less Calvin-like characters used. However, it still does irk me whenever I see them on idiot's trucks, but I fear nothing much can be amended at this point.

Calvin and Hobbes is the #1 best comic strip ever made, in my opinion. My 2 second favorites were Sinfest and Cat & Girl, which are basically both Calvin and Hobbes. But, Sinfest isn't that funny anymore, so Cat & Girl is second, and Wondermark and A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible are tied for third.

Bill Watterson is honestly one of my heroes. If you read the C&H 10th Anniversary collection (or Wikipedia), there's some interesting commentary from him about how he always went up against his publishers to syndicate his strip, and refused every time because he didn't care about the money and didn't want to cheapen the strip.

I also like him because he hates Jim Davis, who is a major sellout.

There was an comic (http://xkcd.com/13/) that made me happy when I saw it, because it reminds me of calvin and hobbes. Completely different, but the landscape reminded me of Calvin and hobbes. It's like I've found a substitute for calvin and hobbes ^_^

Somehow, the Minus webcomic brings back echoing memories of Calvin & Hobbes to me, although I don't know how. I also like xkcd and Far Side. I used to be a garfield fan, but then I noticed it was boring and formulaic.

I got two C&H collections last month for Christmas. I used to have Revenge of the Baby-Sat in paperback and had always wanted more but forgot and was reminded by this thread. Thanks, thread!

Calvin and Hobbes was the first comic I read, too. We had "Revenge of the Baby-Sat" which I think my mom bought at a garage sale, or something.
As everyone else has been saying--minus william (Bakey--have knives; will help)--it is incredible. Awesome. Fantastic. The Essence of Life.

My second favourite comic strip is Bloom County. Before Breathed went Outlandish.

I think that it's not very funny and that Bill Watterson wouldn't know what childhood was actually like if it bit his penis. That one strip put up there had some nice political commentary but nothing I hadn't seen before (both chronologically with respect to creation and chronologically with respect to when I saw it) and nothing particularly special, but because he does it in a way that reminds people of the horribly distorted memories of their childhood they eat it up.

Well, when I was that age it seemed relevant to me.

If you want a more longer-lasting collection of the strips, then yes, it's worth it. I have several of the paperback collections, but a lot of them are a bit beaten up. I don't have all of the strips in book form, but I do have most. I intend to either save the paperback books for whenever I get married and have kids, or else just sell them used on eBay, Craigslist, or give them away on Freecycle.

I love Calvin and Hobbes. For a newspaper strip its very funny and feature suprisingly deep concepts every now and then. Especially the Sunday strips where Watterson had the ability to do more impressive scenes and show his skills at doing detailed landscapes, dinosaurs and stuff.

Have been seriously out of touch with C&H for more years than is permit-able, but love them none the less, and am very glad 2 c a site for them. I deliriously love the winter snowman saga that writhes with the suitable amount of blood and carnage.., so Bravo...Bravo...till then, I look for more "seasonably friendly death and destruction that is "calvin & Hobbes" (Hobbes CLEARLY being the more dominant personality [No offense to any calvanists, just my inner Hobbes speaking] as he is obviously the more charasmatic of the 2) and so to you both I bow respectably). I wish I could more suitably express my C&Hsm's *sigh* but, as I am a mere mortal, I watch in awe at all that is to come...

I don't know if this is off-topic but my friend is finally sending me his books of Calbin and Hobbes (minus the Tenth Anniversary and special ones). I believe I am getting about 10 books in the mail. :mrgreen:

So C&H is definitely my most favorite comic, I remember going over to my best friend's house (who had all the books) and reading them. I have almost all of them, but I'm missing one or two. Not sure what they are. Others I like, not in any order, are Peanuts, xkcd (of course), Far Side, Dilbert. This thread must continue to live
