the most depressing song: help me find it!

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

IMO, and i've said it before, you cannot beat Leonard Cohen for dreary and depressing. Famous Blue Raincoat puts me into the deepest despair when I really start thinking about it.

Spoiler:
Its four in the morning, the end of december
Im writing you now just to see if youre better
New york is cold, but I like where Im living
Theres music on clinton street all through the evening.

I hear that youre building your little house deep in the desert
Youre living for nothing now, I hope youre keeping some kind of record.

Yes, and jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?

Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
Youd been to the station to meet every train
And you came home without lili marlene

And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobodys wife.

Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth
One more thin gypsy thief
Well I see janes awake --

She sends her regards.
And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
Im glad you stood in my way.

If you ever come by here, for jane or for me
Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.

Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried.

And jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear

-- sincerely, l. cohen

Lyrics in spoiler. He's writing a letter to someone so close, he calls him brother, but this person slept with his girl and caused a rift that is never to be closed. The song is sad, and soft and slow and almost colloquial like "Well, this has all happened, and there is nothing I could do. I never thought there was anyway, so I'm going to quietly sit here and take it. You are not happy, Jane is not happy, I am not happy. Oh well. Also, how are you doing?" I think the resignation is mroe depressing than the implied actions.

my flat mate has a playlist he calls "music to kill yourself to". Here it is (artists and notes noted where known):

  • I Still Miss Someone - Johnny Cash
  • Graduation Day - Head Automatica
  • Run - lot of songs called Run, don't know which he meant
  • And All That Could've Been - Nine Inch Nails
  • 9 Crimes - Damien Rice
  • Between the Bars - Elliot Smith
  • How Soon Is Now - The Smiths
  • Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
  • Cannonball - Damien Rice
  • Mad World - Gary Jules version
  • Something I Can Never Have - Nine Inch Nails
  • The Crawl - Placebo
  • Streets of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen
  • Lovesong - The Cure (I think, but ya never know, could be the Sara Bareilles one)
  • Strange - Tori Amos
  • Kings Crossing - Elliot Smith
  • Leaving Hope - Nine Inch Nails (instrumental)
  • Who By Fire - Leonard Cohen
  • Angeles - Elliot Smith
  • I'm On Fire - Bruce Springsteen
  • Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing - Chris Isaak
  • Special Needs - Placebo
  • Things Behind the Sun - Nick Drake
  • The Recluse - Cursive
  • Mes
  • Somedays
  • Piano Concerto in A Major - Mozart
  • The River
  • Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley's version
  • Elegie in C Minor - Gabriel Faure
  • Cocoon - Assemblage 23
  • 30,000 Feet - Assemblage 23
  • Somewhere Over the Rainbow - any version, it's the lyrics in this one, not so much the delivery, that's important
  • Solitary Man - Johnny Cash

And now to append with my own:
  • Disappoint - Assemblage 23 (Tom Shearer asking his father why he commited suicide, his father really did commit suicide, the dedication of the album Disappoint appears on is to him)
  • Danny Boy
  • Hurt - JC or NIN
  • Angles - Scroobius Pip v Dan le Sac (very sad)
  • Alma Mater - Alice Cooper (yea, try listening to this the day you graduate high school if you haven't already)

damn, my flat mate's list is too exhaustive, i only get five to myself, haha.

I think its more

But good choice, I was listening to that today.

Everything is Free by Gillian Welch
Forsaken (Vocal Version) by VNV Nation
Wichita by Truckstop Honeymoon (not especially depressing, but it totally sums up my feelings about where I live these days)
Magnolia Tree by Truckstop Honeymoon (also not mega-depressing, but brings me to tears)
Georgia Lee by Tom Waits
Train Song by Tom Waits
People Ain't No Good by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Sapere Aude.
But it will void warranties.

I just listened to Frankie Teardrop. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YprQnzRfjg
Jesus Christ, that is spooky and depressing. I switched it off after 6 minutes or so, from what I read the end is even worse.

I'll name some of the most depressing songs in my opinion. However, most will be Elliott Smith songs, seeing as he is probably the most depressing artist to ever live.

Ranked in order:

1. The Biggest Lie by Elliott Smith
2. Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday
3. Not Half Right by Heatmiser
4. Between the Bars by Elliott Smith
5. Mad World by Gary Jules
6. Another Lonely Day by Ben Harper
7. Fast Car by Tracy Chapman
8. Brick by Ben Folds
9. Say Yes by Elliott Smith
10. Single File by Elliott Smith
11. Hurt by Nine Inch Nails or Johnny Cash
12. Things Behind the Sun by Nick Drake
13. King's Crossing by Elliott Smith
14. Cold Water by Damien Rice
15. Happiness by Elliott Smith
16. Gravity by John Mayer

thats most of them there are more i just cant think of though

If you like depressing music definitely check out elliott smith. His songs crush you

Edit: "I'm in love with the world through the eyes of a girl who's still around the morning after" - is that a depressing lyric? :?

I'll have to vote Elliott Smith as most depressing artist, possibly with 'True Love' and 'Between the Bars' as the most 'slash my wrists to these' songs. Then there's probably K's Choice - I'm not an Addict, What the Hell is Love and third place as band/artist from a very subjective point of view is Our Lady Peace - Thief because I relate it to a rather sad event.

What? No Pearl Jam or Pink Floyd?

To name just a few: Black, Nothingman, and Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam and Vera, Nobody Home, and (saddest song ever) The Gunner's Dream by Pink Floyd.

I would like to throw my lot in with Nothingman. It's my song.

I too joined for this post.

If you are looking for the ultimate depressing, look no further than Damien Jurado's And Now I'm In Your Shadow album. It's a study in depressing. The song I Had No Intentions is quite possibly the most tragic song ever recorded. Take a listen. You'll hurt.

I'd never heard of him before now, but you really think so? His voice wavers a bit, but he's on key, and I like the sound of the voice itself. At least, it's a lot better than some other artists on Secretly Canadian, though not quite up to par with their best.

Looking back at joe's post he actually says the album as a whole is what hes aiming to showcase for the 'depressed' vote here. Since I can't say I've listened to it I won't say as a whole it's a depressing album, which it very well may be, but we're actually looking for the most depressing individual song. If we were to look at albums as a whole thered be some changed minds.

I'm looking back at this song and the poor lyrical rhythm is also largely at fault.

Henryk Górecki's Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs).

It doesn't get worse than that. I really can't make it through it without some tearing. I'm not afraid to admit it.

Always by Saliva has later made me glad I don't own a gun (hyperbole, but still).
Nothingman by Springsteen is also really damn sad, as HiFiFoci mentioned (if it's the same song he's thinking of). The River makes me bitterly depressed and melancholic, as well.
One, and The Unforgiven, by Metallica.
Mercy Street by Peter Gabriel

edit: I hate to trot out a super-popular song, but Comfortably Numb is a profoundly depressing song, in my opinion because it doesn't really deal with outside problems, it just deals with emptiness inside.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

I was actually thinking of the Pearl Jam song, and while Springsteen has a penchant for working class depressing, Pearl Jam's (which is a completely different song, note) really hits something hard with me.

I'd just like to take a moment to recognize His Awesomeness. In depressing from Gabriel this contends rather heavily with 'Don't give Up' in my book.

Also the Saliva song just doesn't carry the same tug with me as these two.

If you've got a nostalgic side, this is pretty depressing. You have to actually think about the lyrics though - it's not inherent in the music.

I can only think of three off the top of my head
Mr. Kaizer, Hans Constanse Og Meg - Kaisers Orchestra
Soldier Side - System of a down
Hurt - Johnny Cash

Mr. Kaizer, Hans Constanse Og Meg - Kaisers Orchestra

I wouldn't really call Kaizers depressing with the possible exception of 170, (Unless you actually happen to understand the Norweigian lyrics in which case I wholeheartedly surrender this argument, either way it's fab to find another fan)

If any of you are fans of Ambience and that strain, Blamstrains Disfold release does the job pretty well. It's finely crafted music and even though I am akin to depressive music, I deleted it after downloa-, um, buying the album since - well - point in case.

With lyrics, I'd point to Mark Kozelek's band the Red House Painters - one example of such a song is http://www.imeem.com/people/rmGoh8/music/yqmECSLa/red_house_painters_24/ - 24

Okay, fair enough.

Anything is hilarious if looked at the proper way, though.

And in the case of most Queen songs, that proper way is really easy to find.

I agree with a lot of these, but I think we could do with the addition of Eels, most particularly The Stars Shine In The Sky Tonight.

Oh, and maybe Love Love Love by the Mountain Goats.

The song "Vessel" by Glue is really sad. About a robot that finds out he's a robot. It doesn't sound sad, but the way it's arranged is truly depressing. Also, props to any hip-hop that can be sad whatsoever.

Hmm...

Floods by Pantera.

That song will drag your face to the ground and then sit on it. With an anvil.

Nice solo though.
