0442: "xkcd Loves the Discovery Channel"

Postby VHBT » Fri Jun 27, 2008 4:04 am UTC

Image
alt-text (technically title text): I love the title-text!

Nice collection of xkcd references there.

Edit:
For the record, here is the video this is parodying.

I think my favorite panel is the classhole delivering a gift. I don't even want to know what that kid's in for.

He is actually taking the gift away from him. And I brought up the vid for "I love the World" and it syncs up very nicely. Awesome comic!

*edit* Oh right bobcat....that makes more sense.

If this actually has anything to do with the Discovery Channel, I missed it completely, but I do love the references to past xkcd comics. :D

Beh, the one that was posted last seems to be getting all the responses. I guess its human nature to go with what's on top.

Also, it's the only one whose title was formatted correctly from the beginning. Yay for nitpicking!

This discussion topic should survive because it was posted earlier.

This thread wins because it's older by like several seconds.

Anyway, I have only one response to this comic, because I apparently missed it when it happened in the first place: BJTs suck. MOSFETs forever!

:(.

First, the comic didn't load (and all I got was the title text repeated in non-bold text.

Then my friend had to tell me the reference.

Oh well, good comic.

You'd think someone would have posted a link to the ad in question by now.

All it shows is the title where the comic should be, and I thought that everyone was msessin around when they were talking about some box and a bobcat or whatever. (this thread or the other one; I don't know). Anyways, I can't see the comic. Can someone post an image of it i can see please?

Yes, it is.

I see that it's already been posted. Never mind.
Meteorswarm wrote:I hope this isn't like the end of the strips or something!

People have been worrying about this for a while, but I don't think it's likely. Randall is making a living off of something he enjoys. Plus, he has thousands of people responding to everything he puts online and is thoroughly enjoying geohashing.

Somehow, I doubt he'll give all of that up.

Refresh and bypass your cache (ctrl+f5 on most browsers I know). That should do it.

Edit (again):
Minchandre wrote:This thread wins because it's older by like several seconds.

It's only older by one second, and there used to be another posted later in the same second (the only way I could tell is that when both had zero replies, the other was listed as more recent.

Wow, I can't believe I just followed the two surviving threads, refreshing like crazy.

Up until the score was VHBT 13, missingglassmarbles 8, with VHBT having more views as well.

Then again, I'm an electoral politics junkie. Way too much.

I hadnt seen the discovery channel ad until i youtube-d it just now. Quite amusing. 8)

So my first inference was that something grand mustve happened to make him love everything so much. Like he fell in love. Personaly, I like that interpertation better. So I'm gonna stick with it.

I do like the referencing so many past comics though........ awesome. :D

I always thought the commercial went "HOOM de yada." But either way, it has a feel-good Kum-bi-yah vibe to it. Good stuff.

The ad, in turn, is based on an old campfire song:
old campfire song wrote:I love the mountains.
I love the rolling hills.
I love the fountains.
I love the daffodils.
I love the fireside
When all the lights are low.
Boom-dee-a-da, Boom-dee-a-da.
Boom-dee-a-da, Boom-dee-a-da.
Boom-dee-a-da, Boom-dee-a-da.
Boom-dee-a-da, Boom-dee-a-da.

Some versions on Google have more verses, but I don't think I've heard them before.

I would say "rules one and two, toddler" but /b/ has been overrun by underage kids for over a year and it is therefore a moot point (irony?). Ah well.

Not having seen the video before this comic kinda made it less funny, also it was pretty gimmicky since it was mostly references instead of original humor...

but I love song parodies! And overall its a sweet compilation!

A beginning of a reference list (add links at your desire):

Panel 1: "Angular Momentum" http://xkcd.com/162/
Panel 2: The robot in a hamster ball http://xkcd.com/413/
Panel 3: ??
Panel 4: Cory Doctorow http://xkcd.com/345/ and http://xkcd.com/239/
Panel 5: Any of the hamster ball references http://xkcd.com/152/ and http://xkcd.com/211/
Panel 6: 4chan!
Panel 7 and 8: The ball pit (and the sign adorning said pit)

That's enough for now...
Hey baby, I'm proving love at nth sight by induction and you're my base case.
