Mafia, also known as Werewolf (to infidels, we shall not speak of them), is a game originating in real life, but adapted for a forum setting. Basically, you have a small village of innocent people, but hidden among them is a group of nasty mafiosos, whose sole goal is to have at least 50% of the population belong to their organization so that they can control the lynch-votes. Since they cannot recruit people, the only way to achieve this is bloody murder, but not more than one per night. The rest of the town uses their deductive abilities, along with some special roles, to find these infiltrators and lynch them.

no lynching! Instead there is one person (on the town's side), called the Kingmaker, who chooses one person each day to be the king. In our version, at least, the king may not be the Kingmaker, nor may the same person be chosen twice to be king on two consecutive days. The king has the sole power to execute people during the day, hopefully with the advice and consent of the town, and he doesn't take kindly to lynch mobs. Naturally, this creates an entirely different dynamic in how the game is played.
As for the thread title, the theme of this game is the Spanish Inquisition (you probably expected that). Some of the citizens of Castle xkcd do not follow the One True Catholic Faith, and these heretics have rebelled against the kindly Inquisitors in a series of dastardly crimes, culminating with the murder of the castle's lord and the head Inquisitor! In response to this, the Pope Himself has traveled to Castle xkcd to put an end to this menace; however, His wise and prudent Holiness has not seen fit to reveal himself, in order to avoid meeting the same fate, so he has come in secret and has chosen to nominate one citizen every day to be Head Inquisitor. This Head Inquisitor can burn one citizen as a heretic per day, and this choice is his alone, but he should seek the council of the town before he acts too hastily. However, the Head Inquisitor is not guaranteed to be town-aligned, so a heretic may be accidentally chosen for the position. All other rules and procedures are the same as in the first game, unless otherwise noted.
The Roles:
The Pope- analogous to the Kingmaker; aligned with the town, chooses one person to be Head Inquisitor every day, and this person picks a citizen to be executed instead of having lynches; may choose to write a will giving his powers to a citizen upon his death; if a will is not written or the person chosen is anti-town, someone without a role will be chosen randomly to receive his position.
Heretics- analogous to the mafia; opposed to the town, this group of people may confer at night, and they choose one person per night to kill, hoping to eventually rid the town of Catholics; they have formed an uneasy alliance with the Jews, but they do not know who they are.
Drunkard Monk- secretly a heretic, but the Inquisitor (not to be confused with the Head Inquisitor), will not be able to find this out.
Peasants- analogous to the townies; have no powers but their deductive abilities.
Jews- analogous to anti-town Masons; secret cabal that meets at night to discuss their plans for castle domination (parody alert: do not take literally); they win with the heretics, but cannot kill and do not know who the heretics are; if all the heretics are killed, they give up and convert to Catholicism.
Inquisitor- analogous to cop; may interrogate one person per night to find out whether he is a heretic or a Jew; not to be confused with the Head Inquisitor.
Apothecary- analogous to doctor; may choose one person per night to protect from heretic attacks.
Hero- the hero of the people; if the Head Inquisitor tries to kill him, the people will rise up and kill the Head Inquisitor instead.
Fanatic- analogous to day-vigilante; may use one-shot power during the day to kill someone suspected of being anti-town; however, it will be up to the current Head Inquisitor to decide whether he should be executed for this act of murder (this is in addition to the regular burning and, obviously, will give away the Head Inquisitor as anti-town, but they might find it to their advantage to get rid of an extra Catholic).

9. You may not post verbatim or quote from your role PM. Paraphrasing is fine. True story: one game I read was won for the town because the bad guy had a typo in his quoted PM.
10. You may not edit your posts. This is to preempt the possibility of cheating by sending messages to other people and then editing them out.
